Music Director Kayoko Dan

KAYOKO DAN, MUSIC DIRECTOR Dear Friends of Chattanooga Symphony & Opera, I am thrilled to present to you the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera’s 2014/15 Season. As you will see, we have an exciting season planned for you. Some of the highlights of the Barnett & Company Masterworks Series include Beethoven’s 9th Symphony featuring our wonderful CSO Chorus, Tchaikovsky’s 6th Symphony, Rachmaninoff’s 2nd Symphony, Bernstein’s West Side Story, and Mendelssohn’s “Italian” Symphony. Also for Masterworks, we are featuring some dynamic guest artists with the CSO, including Qing Jiang with Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20, Andrew Sords with Sibelius’ Violin Concerto, Javier Oviedo with Rasquier’s Concerto for Saxophone, and our very own Concertmaster Holly Mulcahy with Higdon’s Violin Concerto. You don’t want to miss a single beat of this exciting season! In our Luken Holdings Pops Series, you’ll enjoy the annual traditions of Home for the Holidays and Big Band Fever, along with tributes to Boston Pops, Broadway, and Hollywood films. Our 2014/15 Chamber Series at the Sheraton Read House will present a variety of chamber music from Baroque (Handel’s Water Music Suite) to the more contemporary (Stravinsky’s Octet). It is a lovely way to spend your Sunday afternoon, and I hope you will join us for this special series where you get to learn more about the orchestra and our musicians in a more intimate setting. I am excited to present our third season at Volkswagen Chattanooga with Classical’s Top Hits, Opera Arias and a Family Concert. This series has become a friendly and relaxed way to enjoy symphonic music in a unique setting. I am beyond ecstatic about welcoming Yo-Yo Ma to Chattanooga next season. He is one of the most prominent soloists in the world, and it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness this collaboration. With so much great programming, subscribing is the best way to ensure you see all of your favorites. We are looking forward to sharing this thrilling season. Thank you for your support and for your love of the CSO.

BEETHOVEN’S 9th

Thursday, September 11, 2014 at 7:30pm Kayoko Dan, conductor Chattanooga Symphony & Opera Chorus, Darrin Hassevoort, director Lee University Chorale, William Green, director IVES The Unanswered Question GJEILO Across the Vast, Eternal Sky BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 9, “Choral”

MASTERWORKS 2

The CSO begins the 2014/15 season with one of the best-known works, and arguably one of the greatest pieces written, in classical music – Beethoven’s 9th, the “Choral” symphony. This transcendent program also features Charles Ives’ most famous work that he describes as a ‘cosmic drama,’ and a choral work by modern composer Ola Gjeilo that was inspired by the rebirth of a phoenix.

SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE

Thursday, October 9, 2014 at 7:30pm Kayoko Dan, conductor TCHAIKOVSKY MENDELSSOHN BERNSTEIN

Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture Midsummer Night’s Dream Suite Symphonic Dances from West Side Story

In celebration of the 450th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s birth, the CSO will pay homage to the bard’s theatrical works with classical and contemporary pieces he inspired by Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn, as well as the modern day Romeo and Juliet in Bernstein’s dances from West Side Story.

“As with the rest of the audience, I had to jump up to give the orchestra and performer a standing ovation. Fun time.” CSO Patron

SCHUBERT’S 4th

Thursday, November 6, 2014 at 7:30pm Kayoko Dan, conductor Andrew Sords, violin BEETHOVEN SCHUBERT SIBELIUS

Leonore Overture No. 3 Symphony No. 4, “Tragic” Violin Concerto

MASTERWORKS 4

The CSO visits another of Beethoven’s popular works, this time one of his greatest overtures in the dramatically expressive Leonore Overture No. 3. Following is Schubert’s most serious of his symphonies, the 4th, better known as the “Tragic” Symphony. Violinist Andrew Sords performs Sibelius’ virtuosic and darkly melodic concerto for violin.

Andrew Sords

MENDELSSOHN’S 4th

Thursday, January 29, 2015 at 7:30pm Kayoko Dan, conductor Javier Oviedo, saxophone BRAHMS RASQUIER MENDELSSOHN

Hungarian Dances Nos. 1, 3, and 10 Samsara: Concerto for saxophone and strings Symphony No. 4, “Italian”

MASTERWORKS 5

This concert of international fare begins with Brahms’ lively dance tunes based on Hungarian themes. Modern French composer Helene Rasquier’s colorful and joyful work for saxophone and strings features Javier Oviedo, for which the piece was written. Concluding the program is Mendelssohn’s “Italian” Symphony, written from his travels throughout Europe and inspired by the color and atmosphere of Italy.

Javier Oviedo

TCHAIKOVSKY’S 6th

Thursday, March 12, 2015 at 7:30pm Kayoko Dan, conductor Holly Mulcahy, violin HIGDON TCHAIKOVSKY

Violin Concerto Symphony No. 6, “Pathetique”

Jennifer Higdon’s 2010 Pulitzer-prize winning violin concerto will feature the CSO’s concertmaster, Holly Mulcahy. The work is lyrical and fast-paced and created to showcase the soloist’s great manual dexterity. Counter to that work is Tchaikovsky’s final completed symphony, a pathos-laden piece that deals Concertmaster with the power of fate in life and death. Holly Mulcahy

SCHUMANN’S 2nd

Thursday, April 9, 2015 at 7:30pm Kayoko Dan, conductor Qing Jiang, piano BRAHMS Tragic Overture MOZART Piano Concerto No. 20 SCHUMANN Symphony No. 2

MASTERWORKS 7

Brahms chose the title “Tragic” for his overture to emphasize the turbulent, tormented character of the piece, conveying and eliciting emotional impressions. Mozart’s Piano Concerto, performed by returning guest artist Qing Jiang, has a dark beauty and is one of the most celebrated pieces ever written. Schumann’s uplifting 2nd symphony, written while he was in ill health, has strong undertones and influence from Bach and Beethoven.

RACHMANINOFF’S 2nd

Thursday, April 30, 2015 at 7:30pm Kayoko Dan, conductor Chattanooga Symphony & Opera Chorus, Darrin Hassevoort, director GJEILO Sunrise Mass RACHMANINOFF Symphony No. 2 The final concert of the 2014/15 Masterworks season revisits modern composer Gjeilo, whose Sunrise Mass creates a beautiful journey that from beginning to end epitomizes the entire spectrum of human emotions. Rachmaninoff’s lush and romantic 2nd symphony caps off the season.

“I had never attended a classical music concert. But the entire performance was a very pleasant experience and I will gladly be attending future performances.” CSO patron 423.267.8583
