IN DEPTH
Mistress of all I survey Darren Bevin talks about a new virtual library website which recreates the library at Godmersham Park that Jane Austen spent many hours in.
“I am now alone, in the Library, Mistress of all I survey.” – Jane Austen, in a letter to her sister Cassandra, 1813. IN October 2018, a freely-available website was launched showcasing the library that existed at Godmersham Park, the estate of Jane Austen’s brother Edward Austen Knight. EdwardfirstmetThomasKnight,a rich distant relative in 1779, when ThomasvisitedtheAustenhomewith his new wife during their honeymoon. Edward made a good impression and wasofficiallyadoptedbytheKnights. On the death of his adoptive father in 1794, Edward became heir to all of the Knights’ estates including Chawton House in Hampshire and Godmersham Park in Kent where he lived.
A library to live in
When Edward moved to Godmersham, he inherited a collection of some 1,250 books (many of these in multi-volume sets), to which he and his descendants continued to add. It contained standard works of English, French, and ancient Greek and Roman literature, as well as books in Italian, Spanish, and German. Jane Austen visited Godmersham Park on six occasions over a 15-year period, from 1798 to 1813, staying there for a total of around 10 months. During her final stay in the autumn of 1813, she writes to her sister Cassandra that “we live in the Library except at Meals & have a fire every Even.”

INFORMATION PROFESSIONAL
Darren Bevin (darren.bevin@chawtonhouse.org) is Librarian, Chawton House (@chawtonhouse).
Compiled and edited by Darren with a few additions, this article sources an interview with Peter Sabor, McGill University, Canada, and material written by him for the Reading with Austen website.
From catalogue to virtual library
Despite a significant number of these books being sold in the 20th century when the Knight family fell upon hard times, Chawton House still holds about 500 titles, on loan to Chawton House from their owner Richard Knight, the great-greatgreat-grandson of Jane Austen’s brother, Edward. Chawton House also houses the handwritten 1818 Godmersham Park library catalogue that not only lists the books held at Godmersham Park but also their exact location within three large bookcases, thus allowing the possibility to recreate the library. The project to create a virtual library began in August 2015, when Professor Peter January-February 2019
