Spring Renewal

This season, we explore how thoughtful home design can do more than please the eye. It can support well-being, enhance confidence, and better the lives of those there. In the spirit of seasonal renewal, our annual bathroom showcase features local projects designed and built to restore and rejuvenate, from spa-worthy retreats to bold, personalitypacked powder rooms (p. 178).

On the cover, author, style icon, and brand curator Julianne “JuJu” Taylor shares her colorfully collected home and reflects on her role as a leader in business and design (p. 152). We also visit with Woodhouse Spa owner Kimmy Powell and learn how she’s designed her business and home around wellness (p. 164). Both women offer their home insights and prove how greatly a color scheme can influence mood.

Lastly, we explore the latest innovations in exterior materials, specifically those that replace the oldschool versions of pressure-treated lumber. Learn what’s changed, what’s new, and where to purchase the recommended products from local lumber yards (p. 172).

For me, home design is more than a style statement; it’s an act of self-care. Our homes are our safe places, large or small, newly constructed or remodeled. As you explore this issue, I hope it inspires you to consider how your home can become a place of renewal and self-expression, all by your own definition. After all, great design isn’t just about how a space looks; it’s about how it makes you feel.

Your Plumbing, No Problem

We discuss common plumbing issues, upgrades, and solutions with Danielle and Warren DeHaven of Charles Towne Plumbing, Charleston’s only full-service plumbing company.

Danielle Said: Warren Said:

Tankless water heaters are far superior to standard electric models. They don’t require a gas tank, so you’ll never run out of hot water.

Touchless kitchen faucets enhance the style and efficiency of your kitchen. I appreciate the touchless option, especially when my hands are dirty from food prep.

Point-of-use water filtration offers clean drinking water from one location in the home, often the kitchen. Because drinking water contains many chemicals, it filters out contaminants while improving the smell and taste by reducing toxins and metals.

Don’t wait to call a professional if you notice issues such as gurgling, running, or slow drains, water spots, or dripping faucets. These are often symptoms of a more significant issue.

Tanked or Tankless Water Heater? Kitchen or Bath Fixture

Replacement?

Because tanked water heaters are high-pressure vessels, this method increases the potential for catastrophic damage from leaks. Contact us to begin your transition to a tankless system.

Whole-Home Filtration vs Point-of-Use?

Best Advice for Homeowners?

Body sprayers and additional shower heads create a spa-like shower experience in your bathroom. Whatever your upgrade, we’re here to help you integrate this modern technology into your home.

Whole-home systems filter and purify water throughout the home. This is especially beneficial for showers, as it reduces exposure to toxins and calcium deposits. The overall quality of the water extends the life of appliances and is also better for hair and skin health.

Homeowners can prevent future issues through our free whole-home plumbing inspections through our annual membership program.

1.

Wet Bar

Upon entering the crash pad, guests are welcomed by its moody allure. The dark marsh-inspired wallcovering prepares the eye for the rest of the design, which unfolds through shade and texture. The custom cabinetry painted Benjamin Moore’s Gentleman’s Gray with unlacquered brass lattice hutches creates a contemporary feel paired with its weathered brick accent walls. Chunky quatrefoil and wood inlay hardware introduced here carry through the rest of the home for connection.

3.

Living Room

The living room is a true reflection of personalized living. Custom upholstery in performance-grade fabrics makes it a safe place for a toast with red wine. The carefully selected combination of fabric and color emphasizes the client’s original artwork, whereas the paint shades complement the tones from the entry. The custom-built entertainment center was designed to house a large TV in a way that didn’t become the focus of the room.

2.

With tons of natural light, guests get a luxury hotel vibe in a beautifully laid-out secondary bathroom. A custom marble stone countertop sits upon an unlacquered brass open-leg vanity built into the shower aside it. This vanity is finished with an urban-inspired bronze sconce by Visual Comfort & Co. and a rattan & brass-edge mirror for traditional Charleston elegance. The statement of this space is the stunning floral mural done with tile to tie into the botanicals that carry throughout the textiles used in the rest of the home.

4.

Guest Bathroom Kitchen

Vacation homes require less storage than primary residences, which provides a unique opportunity to scale back the cabinets. In place of uppers, Emily Pope Harris’s custom plasterwork creates a wall texture that emphasizes the quartzite stone. After all, this is a chic place to crash after a night on the town. To keep the party going, the range and sink were repositioned to enhance the view. In place of a traditional island sits a rich counter-height wood table for working, entertaining, or dining.

3. 4. 2. 1.

The Magic of Millwork

This talented husband-and-wife team are making a name for themselves in the custom cabinetry industry of the Lowcountry, delivering creative tailored solutions for a broad range of client desires.

The

Craftsman & Craftswoman

Due to Charleston’s current economic growth, what started as a preservation and development business expanded into Mulberry Millworks, a custom cabinetry design studio. Will Easterlin, with a background in architecture and Jillian with her keen sense of design direction, manage a portfolio of roughly thirty ongoing cabinetry projects. Together with two other key team members, Elizabeth Howard and Wes Hamby, Mulberry Millworks partners with homeowners, contractors and designers throughout their cabinetry projects with open communication, thoughtful design and tight execution.

The Process

At Mulberry Millworks, Jill and Will encourage potential clients to visit their showroom where initial conversation includes design ideas, inspiration images and project budget to gather as much information as early as possible. Whether the customer is considering custom or semi-custom cabinetry, the Mulberry team’s goal is to realize the best possible outcome based on the customer’s needs. The design process begins

with a site measurement for renovations or a review of plans for new construction. From there, the selection process of door styles, color, and accessories begins. Within two weeks, homeowners receive a custom design proposal, followed by a consultation for refinement. Cabinetry installation is a critical phase in the timeline of a project so Mulberry Millworks has representation on site throughout this phase to ensure the complete implementation of the cabinetry design.

The Product

With more than fifteen years of industry experience, Mulberry Millworks has cultivated partnerships with top-tier local artisans and national manufacturers and offers an extensive range of cabinetry options with a focus on delivering personalized solutions and tailored design to each client. They provide custom and semi-custom options as well as bespoke items if needed to fulfill specific project parameters. The cabinetry showcased in this kitchen features more than just a few of these touches from Walnut drawer boxes and coffee nook pocket-doors to flush-installed pantries and

paneled appliances. Mulberry

Millworks’ cabinetry is not only for kitchens, they design vanities, laundries, sculleries, playrooms and mudrooms as well. Their cabinetry doesn’t just solve storage problems; it enhances the overall aesthetic of a space, blending practicality with beautiful design.

ARCHITECT + DESIGNER:

JOY ARCHITECTURE + INTERIOR DESIGN

What is your design philosophy?

I’m a firm believer in reinvesting in existing spaces. I believe breathing new life into old homes is a rewarding way to personalize a space for your family’s needs. When I bought this home, which was originally purchased by my grandparents in 1949, I saw it as an opportunity to preserve its history while making it our own. Seeing this house on the market made my decision to move back to Charleston easier, knowing I’d be raising my family in the same home my mother grew up in.

Favorite space to design?

I shifted a few doorways in the layout and transformed the hallway into a dark and moody guest bath. I used Sherwin-Williams’ Notre Dame, a rich charcoal, for a bold look and added black shower tile from Tile Bar. The space came together with gold brass fixtures, and a rattan vanity to complete the vibe.

What changes were made to the kitchen?

The kitchen and cabinetry were fully reoriented, and we built a 12.5foot island to maximize storage and space for gathering. The kitchen features Farrow & Ball’s paint color Calamine and beautiful, natural Carrara marble, inspired by my time in Italy during undergraduate studies at Clemson University.

Biggest Challenge?

The most challenging part was knowing where to limit the renovation work which is something we help our clients with during their residential projects. I decided to only redesign the first floor, which includes my home office, guest bathroom, primary suite with dressing room, kitchen, dining area, formal living room, and family room.

How did your professional experience influence your own home?

I couldn’t do what I do without my team. I had the help of my wonderful staff who assisted with the drafting and key design decisions: Laura Cayere-King, Allison Landers, Ella Drew Dodd and Claire Mishoe.

For more information call Joy Architecture + Interior Design at (612) 616-9472 or visit joyarchitecture.com.

BUILDERS:

COPEGRAND HOMES

How did your early involvement impact this project?

From initial sketches to formal designs, building plans, and approvals, we resurrected this once-dilapidated beach house into a contemporary coastal chateau. We face every challenge and rename it as an opportunity. This project had its unique complexities in poor condition, termites, and all. Our team is well versed in building codes, so we were able to create unique solutions that conform to all current standards of approval to ensure a smooth process from start to finish.

What were the homeowner’s goals?

They wanted this renovation to demonstrate quality and creativity. We also had to consider what materials would make this a legacy home for generations. Materials and products that resist corrosion and environmental pressures like heat and humidity are as much of a priority as choosing low-maintenance products.

How do you manage your projects for success?

From the preconstruction phases of the build down to our project managers, our professionalism separates our operation. Every member of the CopeGrand team is passionate about doing their best work, and we bring that energy to every job from start to finish. With clear communication, plans, execution, and willingness to pivot as necessary, we’re always ready for unique requests. We are proud of our responsiveness and willingness to coordinate the outcome of any revision.

What customizations are you most proud of?

In the main living space, the diamond pattern coffered ceiling was designed and built to integrate the open floorplan with the detail of the custom walnut cabinetry in the kitchen. Polished, high-gloss finishes refract natural light throughout the day and the tuck (the space below the stairs) creates a fun moment for hosting and makes excellent use of otherwise unused space.

INTERIOR DESIGNER:

ONE COAST DESIGN

What is your design philosophy?

Coastal is a concept that varies from person to person. Our clients come from all over, and at One Coast Design, my team and I love taking the time to help each one discover their unique version of coastal living.

What makes this project unique?

This client contacted us before breaking ground to ensure we could influence the finish selections early on. This allowed us to guide the color palette and overall design aesthetic. Wallpaper in nearly every room added a fun touch, and she was eager for us to create spaces that truly reflected this new chapter in her life. We even brought historical Charleston vibes in the form of a floor-to-ceiling wallpaper mural with custom millwork that evokes that old-world, coastal aesthetic.

Were there any challenges faced?

We wanted to give several pieces of her heirloom furniture a new lease on life, and we love the challenge of updating pieces our clients already cherish for their next chapter.

How did you incorporate the client’s personal style?

Originally from the Northeast, this well traveled client sought a home that would reflect her personal taste and incorporate elements from the many wonderful places she’s visited. We envisioned and designed a space that blended comfort and sophistication, where each room would tell a beautiful story of her adventures and cherished memories.

For more information call One Coast Design at (843) 879-2152 or visit onecoastdesign.com.

(above right) Michelle and her team brought historical Charleston vibes in the form of a floor-to-ceiling wallpaper mural with custom millwork.

(below) The color palette of the Lowcountry was our Iodestar when searching for inspiration on this project. A full range of wood tones in the furniture selection are a nod to the vast array of species indigenous to the area.

Streamlined Kitchen Design

These homeowners were eager to eliminate clutter and create a chic, sophisticated space for their new build.

The Setting:

When LuAnn McCants and Holy City Construction, LLC embarked on this new build, they knew exactly who to turn to for the cabinetry: Stewart Culler Hendrix of Classic Kitchens of Charleston. Having built a strong partnership with this construction company over the years, Stewart was the goto expert for bringing the homeowners vision to life for this new build. From the moment the project kicked off, they knew they could rely on Classic Kitchens for high-quality, custom cabinetry that would perfectly complement the home’s design.

The Problem:

These Lowcountry homeowners have a passion for entertaining, and their kitchen is the heart of their gatherings. They didn’t want guests to be greeted by a cluttered, chaotic space filled with pots, pans, and everyday kitchen essentials. While they needed practical storage to accommodate their love for cooking and everything that entails, they also craved a sleek, clean aesthetic that wouldn’t distract from the inviting atmosphere. That’s where Classic Kitchens of Charleston came in and installed a hutch with inset cabinets and cabinetry with a frameless full overlay providing the perfect balance between functionality and style.

The Solution:

The frameless full overlay cabinetry with its elegant gold hardware offers a refined, seamless look that effortlessly conceals clutter, all while providing the generous storage space the homeowners requested. The interior of the pocket door cabinet is finished in white oak, complementing the other white oak elements throughout the space. This kitchen posed a unique set of challenges that required the utmost precision and skill, but for Stewart Culler Hendrix and the team at Classic Kitchens of Charleston, it was just another opportunity to showcase their craftsmanship. One standout feature is the cabinetry’s pocket doors, which reveal an unexpected pop of color on the interior. The appliances are cleverly hidden, maintaining the sleek, streamlined appearance, while a thoughtful detail like the integrated paper towel rack within the cabinetry makes quick clean-ups simple. With each cabinet customized in various shapes and sizes, no space was left unused. This kitchen boasts a chic, functional storage system that blends within the overall design of the newly built home.

Designed Inch by Inch

This interior designer offers insight and practical tips to help homeowners transform their bathrooms into spaces that truly reflect their lifestyle.

How can you assist homeowners with their bathroom remodel?

Inch Projects offers full-service interior design and construction management to assist homeowners with their bathroom remodels. We have a skilled team to help bring each client’s vision to life. For example, we might transform a large bathroom and unused adjacent space into two separate bathrooms for growing teenagers, or redesign the layout of a main bathroom to create a more modern and refreshed space. Our expertise covers all aspects of the process, including layout planning, construction, design, and styling.

PRO TIP:

Hiring an interior designer during your bathroom remodel helps to optimize both the functionality and aesthetic of the space. With a designer’s expertise, you can make smart use of your budget, space, and materials to create a bathroom that is not only beautiful but highly functional.

Most important part about bathroom design?

When designing a bathroom, the most important aspect is understanding the client’s unique needs and preferences. By speaking with the client and learning about their lifestyle, we can tailor the design to suit their daily routines and priorities. A thoughtful layout is key, especially in a main bathroom, where it can significantly influence how the day begins and ends. Some clients may prefer a long shared vanity, while others might want individual spaces.

PRO TIP:

A well-planned layout can make a daily routine smoother. A good interior designer will take the time to listen to their client’s desires and observe how they interact with their home.

Go-to material combinations?

I love layering neutrals and textures in the bathroom, using materials like leathered stone for added depth. Natural woods and live

plants help bring the outdoors in, while mixing ceramic, concrete, and marble tiles adds visual interest. I complete the space with luxury touches, such as unique Turkish or Moroccan rugs, Turkish towels, antique stools, and meaningful art.

PRO TIP:

Mixing luxurious and natural materials in a bathroom adds dimension and sophistication. Layering contrasting textures, like soft towels with sleek tiles, creates a dynamic and inviting space.

Why should homeowners invest in a landscape design plan?

“Investing in a landscape design plan is crucial because it saves homeowners time, money, and frustration. Without a well-thought-out design, many mistakes can occur, such as incorrect dimensions or placement of features like walkways, pools, and patios. These errors often lead to costly fixes later. A landscape design ensures everything is mapped out properly, allowing homeowners to avoid mistakes, plan for future additions, and achieve a functional, beautiful outdoor space. It also provides a methodical approach to managing practical concerns while making the process smoother and more cost-effective in the long run.

The Making of Blackwater Acres

Thanks to an experienced local house plan designer, this rustic farmhouse and “barndominium” on Johns Island unfolded with a layout made for life on an alpaca farm.

Project by Crosby Creations Home Designs

by Micaela Arnett | Photography by Tripp Smith

When Danelle and Robby Routhier stumbled upon an open gate for this property, they saw a vision for their artistry, craftsmanship, and family legacy.

More than just a place to live, this oak-filled lot would be a place where their home, hobby, and business ventures align. Jodi Crosby of Crosby Creations Home Designs carefully planned the position and layout of their new rustic structures to complement the land with customizations that fit the farmhouse life. Built by Wally Reddington of Canebrake Construction, each structure is rooted in the landscape, blending with the surroundings.

The color palette played a significant role in that vision. The moss-green exterior with black trim and natural wood accents ties the buildings together, while thoughtful details like oversized barn doors add warmth and authenticity. “It was important to us that the house felt like it had always been here,” says Danelle. “We wanted it to become part of the property, not stand apart from it,” her husband Robby adds.

The design embraces a blend of farmhouse, coastal, and bohemian influences. Its organic textures, repurposed materials, and handcrafted details tell a story of artistry and sustainability. The couple incorporated oak, hickory, cherry, and spalted white pine wood into the design, crafting countertops, furniture, and even ceiling planks. As a skilled woodworker, Robby explains, “We just let the natural characteristics of the wood shine,” Robby says, “Each piece has its unique grain, knots, and history.”

Strategically placed entry points allow easy access from the barn to the home, and a mudroom serves as the heart of the daily routine. Complete with a dog wash station, built-in storage, and space for farm gear; it keeps the mess of farm life from ever reaching the main living areas. The kitchen, positioned to face the east, is flooded with natural light, intentionally designed as a perfect space for Danelle’s thriving collection of plants. A large dormer window in the center of the home was another carefully planned element, bringing in even more sunlight to balance the plunging front and back porches that provide shade and shelter.

Grain Expectations

The interior scheme reads as natural as the land, accented by the homeowner’s custom millwork crafted from a combination of wood species.

(above left) The main house’s mudroom, situated just off the back porch, functions as a drop zone with a custom dog wash station and semi-custom cabinets to keep the mess of the farm outdoors. (above right) The homeowner’s custom millwork adds personality to the build, especially the raw-edge countertop in the powder room.

In the primary suite, a cozy barn-door-enclosed office tucks into the corner of the bedroom, while the curved walk-in shower, a feature even the builders had never encountered before, creates a striking focal point. Jodi was sure to design space to showcase Robby’s custom woodwork as seen throughout the home, from the wood installed on the ceilings of the living rooms and porches to the floating shelves and powder room pedestal sink.

Through intentional design and a deep respect for craftsmanship, Crosby Creations Home Designs paved the way for a personalized homefront that supports the farm and invites others to experience its magic. “We wanted a natural home that worked with the land rather than against it. Jodi helped us take all these ideas and make them a reality. Every day, we wake up and see it all come to life just as we imagined,” Danelle and Robby boast. Enduring Luxury

These local homeowners began their dream kitchen by sourcing the perfect stone.

Proper stone selection can transform a high-end kitchen from functional to extraordinary. For the owners of this stunning Charleston home, elegance and durability were equally important in their kitchen remodel. They turned to local stone supplier Charleston Cosmos Granite & Marble at their new flagship showroom in Ladson. Offering a vast inventory of natural and engineered stone varieties, these homeowners could touch and feel the different surface materials to find the right slab for their design.

After browsing the expansive stone warehouse, they found the perfect match: Taj Mahal quartzite. Known for its soft, neutral hues and refined veining, this natural stone is the foundation of a space designed for beauty and performance. Unlike man-made quartz, quartzite is a natural stone developed and designed by Mother Nature. It is more durable than granite and is known for its wispy vein pattern, which is similar to marble.

This particular slab of Taj Mahal quartzite is revered for its warm ivory base, delicate gold undertones, and subtle movement that mimics the luxurious look of marble. Unlike marble, quartzite is highly durable and scratch-resistant, making it a perfect choice for homeowners who want elevated aesthetics without the worry of staining or etching. For this reason, this material is especially popular in kitchens and bathrooms.

In this project, Charleston Cosmos Granite & Marble expertly supplied Taj Mahal quartzite for the kitchen countertops, backsplash, and striking waterfall-edge island. The stone’s natural tones blend seamlessly with the kitchen’s custom cabinetry and brushed brass fixtures, creating an inviting and timeless atmosphere that is as hard-working as stylish.

Beyond the material itself, precise fabrication and installation by Granite Depot ensured perfect vein matching across

slabs, creating a continuous flow that enhances the kitchen’s sophistication. The various applications in this project offer a bold yet refined focal point that showcases the stone’s organic movement while adding a sculptural element to the space. The result is a kitchen that feels effortlessly elegant yet incredibly durable. Thanks to their durable selections, homeowners now have a space that exudes warmth, luxury, and function, whether preparing a meal, hosting a gathering, or simply enjoying a morning coffee.

For those seeking to enhance their homes with natural stone, Charleston Cosmos Granite & Marble offers an exceptional selection of quartzite, marble, and granite. Their expertise in material selection, fabrication, and installation ensures a seamless experience, whether you’re remodeling a kitchen, bathroom, or custom feature. Visit their showroom to explore their curated stone collection and discover how Charleston Cosmos Granite & Marble can help bring luxury and craftsmanship into your home. ✴

A Monochromatic Moment

This locally owned surface company creates custom designs that reflect personal style. For this home on the Ashley River, they crafted a monochromatic surface that perfectly matched the owner’s vision.

This couple had recently purchased their dream home in Wagner Terrace with stunning views of the Ashley River. They purchased it from the original owner, who bought it back in the ‘50s. The moment they stepped inside, they knew they wanted to completely renovate the interior and start fresh, especially in the kitchen.

After researching a company that could bring the homeowners’ desired kitchen countertop vision to life, the homeowner discovered GlassEco Surfaces. Inspired by a stunning design she had seen in a magazine, she brought the magazine clipping to Elizabeth Fisher at GlassEco Surfaces. Their handcrafted countertops, made from locally

sourced recycled glass in North Charleston, SC, perfectly matched the aesthetic she hoped for and fit within their budget.

During the design process, the couple met with Elizabeth many times to discuss the options available when creating their countertop ‘recipe,’ a term coined by Elizabeth to describe the formula of products like shells and glass made into a resin-based surface. They wanted a modern surface to match the rest of the kitchen vibe, so they used mostly rock aggregate in the countertops.

the right materials for their surfaces. While the homeowners had shared their paint and floor choices, the cabinetry color was still a mystery. Drawing inspiration from these accents, they ultimately chose various white stones for their countertop to achieve a sleek, neutral appearance. After these meetings, Emerson Hyatt, the installer for the project, visited the home to take measurements for the template. Once the measurements were finalized and the design approved, the surface was handcrafted at GlassEco Surface’s North Charleston shop. The manufacturing process, plus dry time, takes about fifteen days.

GlassEco Surfaces collaborated with the countertop installers at Emerson Hyatt, the general contractors of Solid Renovations, and the custom cabinet installers at The Cabinet Store, to craft a kitchen that perfectly suits the homeowner’s needs. The design

is playful and inventive, much like the homeowners themselves. “Their home is filled with collected art, and I feel like this custom countertop adds to their collection,” Elizabeth says. The oak cabinetry juxtaposes the unique countertops.

“It turned out better than they expected. They like the monochromatic look, and they have a real mid-century modern kind of river house,” Elizabeth explains proudly, noting how GlassEco Surfaces has made the ability to customize countertops more accessible to homeowners. ✴

Practicality Meets Modernity

What once screamed “2007” now echoes a transitional modern sensibility, thanks to an interior designer who has an affinity for designs where old meets new.

The homeowners appointed Claudia Leonard Interiors for a fresh take that reflected their family lifestyle with a more transitional rather than traditional design aesthetic. Constructed in 2007 with exaggerated trims, dark granite countertops, and traditional woodwork, the house felt outdated and lacked personality. Claudia Leonard Smith’s solution for the proposed brief? Open up the space, introduce airiness, and infuse a sense of fun into the design. “It was a big house, but it didn’t feel as open and bright as it could,” she explains, “I wanted to make it feel fresh while still keeping its Southern charm.”

As a central gathering place for the family, the kitchen was the most

significant transformation. Claudia maintained the existing base cabinets but made key modifications to enhance functionality. She expanded the island by 12 inches, providing storage and a more prominent prep space. To create a seamless blend of old and new, she replaced the upper cabinets entirely and installed new doors on the lower ones with the help and talent of their contractor Chris Simmons of CDS Restoration. One of the standout features is the off-gray Farrow & Ball “Blackened” cabinetry, which subtly shifts in tone depending on the lighting, often appearing as a soft blue. The backsplash, chosen by the homeowner, became the foundation for the kitchen’s color scheme, lending a hint of French bistro charm while maintaining a timeless

appeal. To top it off, the kitchen island now features a striking waterfalledge marble dolomite countertop sourced from AGM Imports. Claudia reconfigured the eat-in area to optimize aesthetics and function. Previously, a freestanding table created congestion near the back door, disrupting the room’s flow. To remedy this, she designed a custom-built banquette, transforming the space into an intimate, practical dining nook. She shares, “Banquettes are a great way to make a space feel cozy and inviting. It’s now a favorite spot for morning coffee, family meals, and even emails.”

wished to preserve. The challenge was in refreshing the space without overwhelming its classic elements. Initially painted in multiple colors that created a Venetian-inspired look, the ceiling was simplified using Portola Paints’ signature limewash, adding subtle texture without competing with the room’s grandeur. Claudia incorporated Scalamandre fabric drapes to complement the existing furniture.

She strategically modified moldings throughout the home to create a more streamlined and cohesive look. In some areas, she reduced the ornate trim; in others, she added paneling to unify the rooms. This approach helped establish a sense of continuity, ensuring that each space felt connected yet distinct. A hidden gem behind the kitchen, the butler’s pantry incorporates a rich green pattern from Thibaut that appears in

select textiles of wallpaper and fabric throughout the home, reinforcing the narrative. While the homeowners leaned traditional in their design preferences, they needed to work with a designer who encouraged them to embrace a more versatile and livable aesthetic.

“Overly traditional spaces can sometimes feel stuffy,” she explains. “I wanted this home to be classic but also adaptable, something they could love now and still see as stylish in ten years.” From adjusting moldings to rethinking kitchen functionality, Claudia Leonard Interiors transformed this Charleston home into a bright, welcoming, and beautifully balanced family retreat. ✴

A Marble-ous Experience

With the help of a full-service material supplier and installer, this outdated primary bathroom was transformed into a luxurious retreat.

This early 2000s home’s cramped shower and outdated tub left little room for comfort. Flooring Factory, a trusted local source for surface materials, guided the homeowners through the renovation process with its in-house design and installation team. Specializing in kitchen and bathroom remodels, the company offers two extensive Charleston showrooms, providing a hands-on selection experience for any budget. From inspiration to execution, Flooring Factory ensures homeowners receive expert guidance on material choices and design strategies.

“It only takes one material, one piece of tile, or one swatch to help our team steer a homeowner’s design process in ways that feel uniquely their own yet well-informed,” says

Livia Sousa, Flooring Factory’s co-founder. “A bathroom or kitchen renovation is an investment, and we have the staff to fit any homeowner’s timeline,” she adds.

For this primary bathroom remodel, the homeowners visited Flooring Factory’s Mount Pleasant showroom with a plan to expand their space. Their vision centered around an etched marble tile they fell in love with at the start of the project. From there, the rest of the design was built to complement this stunning accent. The shower tiles were carefully chosen to enhance, rather than compete with, the intricate marble placed on the shower bench and niche.

To further modernize the space, the outdated vanity was replaced with a semi-custom dual vanity featuring

cabinetry by Waypoint and hardware by Jeffrey Alexander. Silestone Calacatta Gold countertops, installed by Flooring Factory’s trusted partners at Mike USA, provided a durable yet elegant surface for everyday use.

“Using material in both spaces creates subtle depth and catches the eye upon entering,” Livia explains. The polished Skorpion White Levigator porcelain tile on the shower walls blends seamlessly with the Arabesque Carrara flooring, creating a refined, cohesive look. The tile’s rectified edges allow for minimal grout lines, ensuring a sleek, uninterrupted finish. The shower niche and bench feature DW Tile & Stone EPM04, an engraved and honed marble tile that adds texture and visual interest.

With Flooring Factory’s expert guidance, what was once a confined and outdated bath became a spacious, spa-like retreat, complete with a walk-in frosted glass shower, upgraded cabinetry, luxurious surface materials, and elegant lighting and hardware. ✴

A Better Beach House

A full-service renovation team transformed this once-dated beach house into a thoughtfully designed retreat ready to host short-term rentals.

The late-’90s home received its first significant upgrade, focusing on the kitchen, hall bath, guest bedrooms, porches, and main living spaces. The new owners sought to enhance sleep, storage, and shower spaces, keeping flexibility in mind. Founded by designers Mary Gerard and Michael Pope, Better by Design has completed over 180 projects in the past 15 years. Its planning, budgeting, and construction management expertise ensures projects run smoothly. “If a homeowner has never done a major renovation, their expectations aren’t always realistic,” says Michael. Educating

clients early in the design phase helps them navigate construction fatigue and align budgets with desired outcomes.

The design team reworked the main living space to improve flow and efficiency while modernizing the interior to maintain a natural, open, and inviting feel. Leathered granite countertops and durable finishes ensured the home remained stylish yet renter-friendly. White oak flooring, a repositioned central island, leathered granite countertops, a blue subway tile backsplash, and custom cabinetry reinvented the space. Glass-front uppers,

a full-height pantry, and a beverage station provide ample kitchen storage.

Once cramped with twin beds, the first guest bedroom accommodates four adults and features built-in storage, charging ports, and reading lights. A once-narrow hallway bath was expanded into a glassenclosed shower clad in durable porcelain tile, complemented by upgraded plumbing and lighting fixtures.

Better by Design collaborated with GlassEco Surfaces to achieve a subdued coastal aesthetic, incorporating recycled glass and shell elements into the fireplace and a custom table for the second-floor porch, which was updated with new cable railings, screens, a poplar ceiling, and

concrete porcelain flooring. Additional exterior improvements included new front stairs, cable railings, and outdoor lighting for enhanced curb appeal and safety. At the ground level, a relocated HVAC system updated light fixtures, and an epoxy-coated floor improved functionality. Outside, a custom-built outdoor shower provides a practical touch for post-beach rinses.

Relocating HVAC and plumbing on the lower level created a functional entertainment area with a ping-pong table and storage for beach gear. Inside, Mary repurposed existing furniture where possible, incorporating new, durable pieces like a glass-covered dining table to balance style and practicality.

The entire first floor was repainted in Sherwin-Williams City Loft, replacing bright teal with a versatile neutral that shifts with the light. Outdated incandescent lighting was replaced with statement pendants and chandeliers, and white oak flooring was refinished seamlessly throughout. For Better by Design, blending existing elements with new materials ensures a cohesive look while keeping renovation timelines efficient. “Small details like outlet placement and tile installation make the difference between a good project and a great one,” Mary says. ✴

The Impact of Color

Paint shades used in this Stono Ferry renovation informed the rest of the design with nods to its natural surroundings.

Color is a defining element of Charleston’s architectural heritage, and SherwinWilliams honors this tradition with a curated collection of hues approved by the city’s Board of Architectural Review. In this Stono Ferry renovation, designer Samantha Jones used Sherwin-Williams paint selections to connect the home’s interiors, the surrounding landscape, and the homeowner’s art collection.

With complete creative freedom over color and material selections, Jones drew inspiration from the natural environment and the homeowner’s

curated artwork. “I pulled colors from the landscape, incorporating neutral greens with subtle pops of pink and warm tones throughout the house,” she explains. She integrated textured wallpaper, natural fabrics, and wood furniture to enhance the organic feel. Beyond aesthetics, Jones carefully considered how light would interact with color. “I leave swatches on the wall in different areas and observe them throughout the day,” she shares. This approach ensured that every shade contributed to comfort and harmony.

inviting ambiance. Aesthetic White SW 7035 creates a soft, neutral foundation that adapts beautifully to shifting natural light. Cabbage Rose SW 0003 is a warm and sophisticated pink, lends elegance to the bath, pairing seamlessly with patterned wallpaper. A custom Sherwin-Williams trim color highlights architectural details with subtle contrast. Charleston White DCR100 on the back porch reinforces the home’s timeless Lowcountry charm. Upward SW 6239 graces the porch ceiling, adding a soft blue hue rooted in Southern tradition.

In addition to selecting colors, Jones prioritized durability—an essential factor in well-designed homes. Sherwin-Williams’ advanced formulations provided both beauty and resilience. Sherwin-Williams Duration® in a matte finish ensures washability and long-term wear for the walls. Trim, builtins, and cabinetry feature Sherwin-Williams ProClassic® hybrid satin, which was applied by Seaside Home Services

and delivers a smooth, lasting finish. This carefully curated palette reflected the homeowner’s style and demonstrated the transformative power of Sherwin-Williams paints. “When colors complement each other and create a sense of visual harmony, the home naturally feels cohesive,” Jones says, adding, “The range of hues and finishes from Sherwin-Williams allowed me to balance contrast and consistency, ensuring a seamless flow from room to room.”

By thoughtfully pairing colors and finishes, Jones crafted an inviting, sophisticated home in which every shade enhances the space. The design achieves lasting beauty and functional elegance through Sherwin-Williams’ expert formulations. ✴

At Priester’s Custom Contracting, their greatest passion is transforming clients’ dreams into reality. With each project, whether turning a vision into a forever home or bringing a blueprint to life, they take pride in every step of the journey and are on the job site every day. For this custom build in downtown Summerville, Taylor Priester collaborated with Crosby Creations Home Designs on the house plan and By Design Consulting, LLC for the interior design. This new build adds value to the neighborhood and seamlessly blends into the vernacular.

“We received professional and personal referrals for Priester’s Custom Contracting. After meeting with

Taylor and discussing our project, we felt confident in our decision to move forward with him,” the client explains.

This couple anticipated their newly built home would be their forever residence. It quickly became clear that the project’s primary goal was to create spaces that seamlessly integrate the charm of Summerville’s historic district while incorporating aging-inplace features.

By prioritizing accessibility from the beginning, the design ensured that the homeowners would enjoy a beautiful, functional living space for years without future renovations. Another request was a home equipped with modern amenities. With aging in place in mind,

(above) Primary Bathroom: The spa-inspired bathroom is thoughtfully designed with ADA additions while maintaining a polished aesthetic with nickel fixtures. (below) Guest Bathroom: The space’s custom-built wood vanity and stacked shower wall tile add warmth and complement the homeowner’s modern aesthetic.

Priester’s Custom Contracting thoughtfully built a spa-like primary bathroom with ADA-compliant features. The bath has a wheelchair-accessible shower with a fold-up seat and a toilet paper holder grab bar. Polished nickel finishes were chosen to seamlessly complement the long-term accessibility features, ensuring that both function and aesthetics were considered.

A mudroom, conveniently situated off the kitchen and beside the elevator, was built as a practical drop zone for groceries from the drive-under garage. The service elevator, running from the ground floor to the third, provides access to every level of the home. The addition of an elevator will aid homeowners in maintaining independence and mobility, allowing them to navigate their living space with ease as they age.

The living room’s focal point is a striking vertical tiled fireplace, with a vent positioned above the television to disperse heat throughout the room efficiently. It beautifully complements the homeowner’s modern art collection. The client shares that their favorite aspect of the project was, “The quality of the construction. We have too many favorite parts inside the home to choose just one, but if I had to… I’d say the open living space, kitchen, and family room. The

countertops and colors of the kitchen with the family room’s horizontal gas fireplace wall, create a harmonious living space.”

The decorative iron railings on the staircase are a striking piece of art. They bring a clean, modern touch to the transitional furnishings throughout the home. These uniquely designed stair pickets add a distinctive architectural element, further enhancing the home’s character.

The exterior was thoughtfully designed to preserve the area’s historic charm while offering the curb appeal of a classic raised slab design despite being a drive-under residence. “We loved the challenge of building a new custom home in Summerville’s historic district, ensuring it blended seamlessly with the character of the established neighborhood,” explains Taylor Priester, a Priester’s Custom Contracting team member. “Our goal was to honor the area’s rich architectural heritage while creating a home that meets the modern needs of our clients. The result is a timeless home design that feels like it has always belonged in the neighborhood.” ✴

Textural Dreaming

These Awendaw homeowners wanted to move away from their farmhouse aesthetic. With the help of this local design team, they created a home that reflects their passion for travel and love of British Colonial style.

This home combines stunning Lowcountry charm with farmhouse touches, but the homeowners wanted to change the vibe by blending British Colonial style with bold colors and textures. Brittany Hanlon and Stephanie Gannon of Hayes + Nash Design Co. were brought in to transform the home’s features into something custom, incorporating elements inspired by the Caribbean and Mexico, places the homeowners love to visit.

Working alongside CK Contracting from the start of this remodel made selecting finishes much smoother. The real challenge, however, came from working with an existing structure and finishes that didn’t quite match the homeowners’ desired style. When

faced with elements that aren’t necessarily what these designers would have chosen for this design, it pushed them to find creative ways to achieve a result that both they and their clients were thrilled with. “Our goal is always to ensure happy clients, and as designers, our job is to bring their vision to life. We remind our clients that this process is about their wants and needs. We’re here to guide them and assist in creating a home they’ve always envisioned,” explains Brittany and Stephanie.

The dining area design draws inspiration from the homeowners’ travels and love for the Caribbean and Mexico. With a palette of whites, blacks, and natural wood tones, the space feels bright, airy, and welcoming.

Black-framed windows create a striking contrast with the tropical window treatments. The painted window frames seamlessly integrate with the rattan chairs surrounding the Truffle Round Dining Table from Shanty Shoppe. A bamboo-framed chandelier adds a distinctive flair, effortlessly unifying the design.

This design team has a knack for creating interiors that are as fun as they are expressive, bringing together vibrant wallpaper, carefully selected furniture, and standout accessories from The Shanty Shoppe, a boutique décor store owned by Hayes + Nash Design Co. Impactful Insulation

Insulation is key to your home’s energy efficiency, and these Lowcountry experts can guide the product selection for any build.

When purchasing a home, many people focus on décor, landscaping, and even plumbing, but insulation is often overlooked. Summers in Charleston can be hot and humid, while winters can bring bitter cold. Your home’s insulation is critical in regulating temperature and maintaining energy efficiency throughout the year.

IBP Charleston offers solutions to homeowners who need to keep their homes warm, dry, and energy-efficient. From foam and fiberglass insulation to FortiCel mold protection, they provide

a range of services to meet different needs. It’s not just about insulating your home; it’s about choosing the right service for your situation.

Fiberglass insulation is made from extremely fine-spun glass and helps keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Fiberglass is particularly effective in attics and is available in two forms: batt and blownin. In new construction projects, batts are typically installed between wall studs, floor joists, and ceiling rafters. On the other hand, blown-in fiberglass insulation is versatile, making it ideal for retrofit projects or hard-to-

reach areas. Thanks to its widespread availability, fiberglass insulation is also affordable and easy to install.

Spray foam insulation is an excellent choice for filling gaps, creating a strong barrier against temperature changes and moisture. It is applied as a wet substance that expands quickly into a thick foam, fitting snugly into wall crevices and making it the best option for insulating difficult areas. Unlike fiberglass insulation, spray foam has a higher R-value, meaning it’s more effective at resisting airflow. While it can be more expensive upfront, it provides long-term savings on energy bills, according to Preston Merriman of IBP Charleston.

Blown-in insulation is the installation method of blowing insulation into spaces using a special device. Fiberglass insulation is one type that can be installed this way. Blown-in insulation reduces utility bills, maximizes energy efficiency, minimizes outside noise, and helps improve the performance of your air conditioning system.

For the best results, consider combining fiberglass insulation for general areas, spray foam for gaps, and blown-in insulation

for fire resistance and soundproofing. Insulation can lower your electric bill, enhance indoor air quality, and create a more comfortable living space.

IBP Charleston also offers FortiCel, a mold prevention system that can be installed on new construction framing. For renovations with existing mold on the frame, their team treats the mold before applying FortiCel to prevent future growth. Preston explains, “FortiCel, backed by a twenty-five-year fully transferable warranty, provides an impenetrable surface on dimensional lumber, steel studs, concrete, and floor joists, preventing mold growth.” Once applied, FortiCel will not wash off or degrade, providing homeowners with peace of mind.

Newly Built and Brimming with History

This acutely custom home in Poplar Grove showcases a local Master Builder’s commitment to craftsmanship and dedication to detail for homeowners with a love of old-world charm.

Ahome is more than walls and a roof. A home reflects its owners’ past, present, and vision for their future. For Richmond natives, Larry and Linda Terry, their dream to build a new custom home in Charleston was about far more than relocation. Their goals centered around a forever home that blended seamlessly into the Lowcountry landscape while accommodating their treasured heirlooms, collections, and lifestyle both now and in the future as they grow older. Finding the right builder for such a personal project was paramount. After meeting with Kevin Kalman of Kalman Construction, their decision was solidified. “With his references, we met folks he had built for, and they had nothing but wonderful things to say about him,” they recall. Having built a

home before, they understood the challenges, especially from seven hours away. Kalman’s straightforward, problem-solving approach and constant communication made all the difference. “He never dismissed an idea. Instead, he would say, ‘That’s a great idea’ or ‘Let’s think about how we can make it work.’”

Richmond architect, Josh McCullar, drew the plans to fit the setting and Lowcountry aesthetic and Kalman adapted them to fit the budget. The couple aimed to ensure the home felt like it had always been there rather than appearing trendy or new. “The house was designed around our antiques and collections from our travels,” they explain, “We didn’t have to buy much new, but built around what we already had.” Their move consolidated three homes—one in Richmond, one at the Kevin

Steeped in Antiques

The informal sitting room houses a reclaimed mantle and heart pine flooring. Dozens of collected pieces of art and furniture represent an international lifetime that led them to settle into this forever home.

Outer Banks, and one from a previous marriage—into a single, thoughtfully curated space. Their new home needed to accommodate multi-generational friends and family gatherings, while allowing comfortable everyday living for two. Beyond the personal elements, Kalman’s construction process set a new standard in the neighborhood. Residents frequently noted how clean and orderly the site was. “This is how construction should be done,” one neighbor commented.

Unlike many builders relying solely on subcontractors, Kalman’s in-house team ensured quality and consistency. One of the most striking aspects of the home is its use of repurposed materials, lending an authentic sense of permanence. Most notably, the 200-year-old heart pine flooring sourced from an old textile mill in

New Hampshire, the custom 600-pound mahogany front door (inspired by a French cottage, was hand-built by a local artisan), chestnut window lentils, which are a rare, nearly extinct wood add warmth and depth, and cypress ceiling beams in the barrelvaulted hallway.

Even the furniture holds meaning, like the 1950s rocking chair from the homeowner’s mother, which is now reupholstered in the snug. It sits just beside the fireplace mantle, originally from an 1850s Richmond townhouse that was seamlessly integrated into the new design—a house with such a unique vision required overcoming technical challenges. One of the biggest hurdles was staying as close to the ground as possible, avoiding excessive elevation while meeting floodplain regulations. The home’s sprawling design made it challenging to

integrate ductwork without compromising the aesthetic, Kalman partnered with an HVAC engineer to meticulously design the system from scratch. What should have taken a week took nearly a month of backand-forth problem-solving. The solution? Chases and a hidden crawl space to hide the ductwork while maintaining efficiency.

Through thoughtful design, historical elements, and a deep sense of place, Kalman Construction turned a dream into a lasting reality. And for this couple, after years of maintaining multiple homes, they’re finally home for good. ✴

Constructed for the Coast

A nationally acclaimed architect explicitly selected this local material supplier to embark on an international escape.

In an exclusive Caribbean retreat designed by Boston-based architect John MacDonald, Charleston Design Center powered by Source Consulting, LLC, was vital in delivering high-quality, hurricanerated windows, doors, and custom millwork. Though MacDonald’s portfolio spans far and wide, his deep connection to Charleston’s architectural heritage made him the perfect fit for this coastal project. Tasked with sourcing and supplying materials that could withstand the island’s extreme climate, Charleston Design Center ensured beauty and resilience in every detail.

“What sets us apart in projects like this is our access to unique and specialized products from around the globe,” says Chris Findlay, CEO and owner of Charleston Design Center. Working closely with the architect, his team ensured seamless execution, even remotely. What took one year to design took two years to build, but the result was worth the wait. The team selected Kolbe’s impact-rated models crafted with solid mahogany, a wood prized for its stability in humid climates for exterior windows and doors. “Mahogany moves the least compared to other wood species,” Chris explains, meaning Chris Findlay of Charleston Design Center

it won’t warp or deteriorate due to fluctuating humidity. Given the island’s exposure to salt air and hurricane winds, all windows and doors met Miami-Dade Certification, the highest level of storm resistance available.

Inside, the team provided custom solid mahogany interior doors, adding warmth and refinement to the home. Rocky Mountain Hardware was used throughout, with handles made of solid cast bronze. “Each piece is unique,” Chris notes, as the metal is poured into a mold, resulting in subtle variations in every handle while maintaining a cohesive design.

Beyond windows and doors, the Charleston Design Center’s millwork expertise tied the entire project

together. Every detail, from door casings to trim, was custom-made to match the home’s rich mahogany finishes, ensuring visual consistency. Prefinished to exact specifications, the millwork blends seamlessly with the chosen color scheme, enhancing the natural beauty of the wood grain. It is especially striking on the outdoor pavilion with mahogany louvers.

The home’s design draws on British Colonial influences, marrying traditional craftsmanship with modern engineering. Strategic size adjustments to windows and doors maximized light and airflow while maintaining the structure’s integrity against extreme weather conditions. Because Charleston’s climate is similar, products used at this location suit Charleston

homeowners with the same practical resilience.

With a portfolio spanning historic Charleston properties to new beachfront builds like this, Charleston Design Center, powered by Source Consulting, has a reputation for providing durable, high-end materials tailored to each project’s unique demands. This Caribbean estate exemplifies their expertise, proving that thoughtful design and precision craftsmanship can create a true architectural masterpiece even in the most challenging locations. ✴

Sullivan’s Island Retreat

With 41 years of expertise, these builders have transformed numerous homes on Sullivan’s Island into cherished masterpieces.

Originally brought on for a straightforward renovation on Sullivan’s Island, Daly & Sawyer Construction quickly discovered that the entire home would need to be gutted and redesigned. As they exposed the original structure, it became clear that strengthening the integrity of the home was crucial, prompting a shift in their approach. The challenge became finding a way to merge the home’s original features with a fresh design, ultimately allowing them to craft a modern home that still preserved the timeless feel of a classic beach house.

Having previously worked with partners Michael Daly and Neil Sawyer, the homeowners trusted them to handle

the build of a new structure with care. These builders played a vital role throughout the 18-month project, acting as both a liaison and executor between the homeowners and the architect, Beau Clowney Architects. They managed everything from transitioning the project from a renovation to a rebuild to incorporating unique materials like the reclaimed heart pine and original brick.

“When we dug up the old footers, we uncovered heart pine mud sills that had been used as the original foundation support for the house,” explains Michael. Heart pine is a highly durable wood commonly used in the construction of older homes; finding this to a builder was similar to a pirate discovering treasure. The homeowners

A small army of local contractors and suppliers made this project successful. The design of the space came to life with materials sourced from Buck Lumber & Building Supply, Inc., countertops fabricated by Palmetto Surfacing, and flooring by John Griffith Hardwood Flooring & Carolina Lumber Sourcing. Buckhannon Tile crafted the elegant tile work, while Ferguson Home supplied the high-end appliances. Plumbing fixtures were thoughtfully chosen from Bird & Foxworth in addition to faucets by Bird Hardware. The custom cabinetry built by Saunders Woodworks was finished with paint by Wray Fernandez Oleta Painting.

Daly & Sawyer are responsible for some of the most luxuriously crafted homes on Sullivan’s Island.

As Michael says, “We take great pride in the work we do. This project is no exception. It’s the culmination of years of experience, attention to detail, and a dedication to bringing the client’s vision to life. Knowing that the homeowners are happy with the end result makes all the hard work worth it.” ✴

A House to Home

The home of local business owner and interior designer blends timeless elegance with coastal warmth, showcasing artisan details, natural textures, and serene, family-friendly luxury.

Drawing inspiration from the natural beauty of Kiawah Island, Staci Lantz, owner of Imagine Home, designed a home that blends coastal hues and organic textures for an effortless indoor-outdoor flow. “From the start, I envisioned creating a warm, inviting, and effortlessly elegant space,” she shares. As Staci worked through the design, it evolved organically, with each new layer of personal touches and thoughtfully collected pieces contributing to the space she’s come to truly love. The result is a home that feels as timeless and inviting as the island itself.

As a designer, one of the most challenging aspects of designing her own home was curating a space that would feel both timeless and personal. Staci Lantz is constantly inspired by new ideas, so narrowing down what she wanted the vision of her personal home was challenging. Staci explains, “I overcame this by focusing on what truly resonates with my family—textures, tones, and pieces that feel collected over time rather than trend-driven.”

cabinetry and paneled appliances, all adorned with gold hardware by Mulberry Millworks, creating a striking contrast against the white herringbone backsplash. The backsplash extends up the wall, framing a minimalist white range hood beautifully accented by delicate white oyster plates, creating a cohesive monochromatic feel. Above the island, two large rattan light fixtures cast a warm glow, pairing beautifully with the rattan chairs around the island. The countertop showcases cutting boards, cookbooks, and carefully selected accessories from Imagine Home.

A cozy sitting area boasting a blue shiplap wall and open shelving to display trinkets and collected pieces is tucked off the kitchen. “One of the most meaningful design elements in my home is the curated collection of art and textiles, many from travels and special moments,” Staci shares proudly. Prioritizing both comfort and function, Staci designed this space with inviting chairs and plush pillows that add texture, while the kitchen light fixtures spill into the sitting area, creating a layered lighting effect. Two rugs add dimension on the floor, making this a perfect spot to unwind or enjoy company.

“My favorite room is our living room. It’s where our family gathers the most, filled with natural light, layered textures, and pieces that tell our story,” Staci shares. “The blend of cozy seating, curated art, and a connection to the outdoors creates a space that feels both welcoming and deeply personal.”

The primary bath boasts vibrant wallpaper and window treatments that highlight a color from the wall covering. The featured accessories add to the relaxation, while a colorful print on the wall brings in even more lively hues to the space. This bathroom reflects the playful spirit of the design.

Staci’s home embodies everything she holds dear: natural textures, soft neutrals, and carefully chosen details that create a tranquil atmosphere. Designed with connection in mind, each space is inviting and truly feels at home. ✴

COME HOME TO Good JuJu

How JuJu Taylor’s fearless style and entrepreneurial spirit have shaped a life and brand infused with vibrant energy and authenticity.

by Micaela Arnett
Photography by Callie Webster, Kelly Parrish, Ruta Smith, and Isabelle Lewis
“When people come to my home, they immediately know I live here. It’s such a JuJu house.”

ulianne “JuJu” Taylor is not just a designer; she is a Southern tastemaker and an influential businesswoman who has seamlessly woven creativity and business strategy into her life’s work. Julianne’s brand has further expanded her influence in the fashion and design industries, proving that style is not just about aesthetics but confidence, energy, and authenticity. JuJu shares her journey, the philosophy behind her businesses, and how she balances entrepreneurship with being a mother, mentor, and inspiration to many.

As a graduate of the University of Georgia with a BFA in interior design and the University of South Carolina with a master’s degree in human resources, JuJu’s early career path took an unexpected turn when she moved abroad with her husband, Chris. While living in Australia, Spain, China, and Korea for his career with General Motors, her creativity was never far behind. Inspired by global markets and artisans, she began sourcing manufacturers for home goods and custom upholstery, immersing herself in international design. “I taught myself survival Mandarin so I could shop off the beaten path and communicate directly with vendors,” she says. A serial entrepreneur, JuJu has reinvented herself numerous times over the years.

In 2012, she launched Taylor Burke Home as a furniture, art, and accessories export business in South Korea. Over the last thirteen years, this business has expanded into designing and manufacturing American-made custom upholstery and, more recently, a rebrand to High-Low Luxe, a curated home décor company.

A multi-passionate entrepreneur, JuJu’s keen eye for design and strong business acumen has allowed her to work on creative projects in various arenas. In 2016, she launched the Julianne Taylor Style brand, an umbrella company to encompass her multifaceted career of licensed product collaborations, fashion capsule collections, speaking engagements, and book deals. Her most notable lines include wallpaper, art prints, and tabletop accessories with brands like Mitchell Black and Oliver Gal, sold through retailers such as Anthropologie, Home Goods, and Wayfair.

COME HOME TO Good JuJu

Art is central to JuJu’s home, adding depth and personality to her bold design choices. A curated mix of modern and traditional pieces bridges the past and present, infusing every space with unique character.

Her travels overseas inspired many of her designs, especially her wallpaper collections with Mitchell Black. The first collection of patterns, The Shanghai Collection, mimics traditional Chinese design motifs. Two fan favorites, “Wallflower” and “Don’t Be Koi” are featured on the ceilings of her morning room and dining room, respectively. The Lomé Collection was inspired by a missions trip to Togo, West Africa, and is reminiscent of traditional African wax print textiles. The best-selling “Riviere” pattern is featured on JuJu’s primary bathroom walls.

Shop JuJu Loves

Last fall, she launched JuJu Loves,

an online women’s apparel and accessories boutique, as a natural extension of her brand. “I launched the brand to offer special pieces to help women shine,” she explains. Each outfit pictured is part of the JuJu Loves collection, which is available online and at her pop-up shop at Maris DeHart, a clothing boutique downtown.

With a community of over 200,000 followers on Instagram and TikTok (@juliannetaylorstyle). JuJu also shares her curated collections online for those who don’t live locally.

“We are not just selling clothes. We are celebrating a lifestyle where fashion meets mindfulness. Show

up for yourself. Let your unique style speak.” JuJu Loves promotes a vibrant, unapologetic approach to style. Signature accessories like fabric-wrapped headbands, statement earrings, and sequined and embroidered jackets help women feel put together even on challenging days.

“My social responsibility is to help other women see the possibilities for themselves and live unapologetically. We get enough messaging from society that tells us not to be too loud, too bold, too opinionated, or too much. I’m not everyone’s cup of tea, and I’m okay with that. I’m not dimming my light to make other people feel more comfortable,” she says.

A significant part of JuJu’s message is empowering women to embrace individualism, including their personal taste in fashion. “Clothing carries energy,” she says, “And how I show up in the world affects how I feel and interact with others.” Her personal style reflects this philosophy of bold selfexpression. “I used to suppress my style because I worried about what people would think,” she admits, “Now, I wear a sequin turban to Publix and don’t care.” This confidence, she says, is something that came with time. She adds, “The older I get, the less I care about what people think. I like myself, and that’s what matters.”

She frequently reminds her followers to get up and get dressed and to be ready for more joy and living. “About ten years ago, I started dressing how I felt,” she says. She encourages women to stop saving the sparkles for a special occasion, adding, “Today is the occasion.” We learn from JuJu that dressing up is a self-care act that signals confidence and readiness for the day ahead.

Good JuJu: The Book

Born from a desire to lift and celebrate other female entrepreneurs, JuJu’s first book DesignHer follows the stories of inspiring women in the home decor industry. Critics call it a must-read for design enthusiasts and anyone

considering the path of entrepreneurship. This authenticity and commitment to women and the community is something her brand stands firmly on. Her ultimate goal? “I want to inspire women to step boldly and unapologetically into their most authentic selves,” she says. This encouragement caught wind and opened the doors for her various motivational speaking engagements and business coaching for creatives. She has a passion for supporting women in business and helping them talk the talk and walk the walk. Confidence, she teaches, is key.

Most recently, in her keynote address for an International Women’s Day conference, she spoke about the power and science behind how we talk to ourselves. This coincided with the launch of her second book, Good JuJu 90-Day Workbook & Journal: Quiet your Inner Critic and Start the Day with Positive Intention and Purpose. “It contains proven mindset strategies to transform self-doubt into selfassurance,” she says.

She also emphasizes relationship-building as a key to success. “You must put yourself in the right rooms,” she advises. “Nobody will knock on your door and beg to be your friend. If you want meaningful connections, you have to make the effort.” Despite her packed schedule, she

prioritizes rest and self-care. “I run hard for a short stretch, and then I rest. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to listen to my body,” she shares.

House of JuJu

The Taylor family’s Mount Pleasant home reflects the style maven’s fearless approach to design. “When people come to my home, they immediately know I live here. It’s such a JuJu house.” Bold colors, statement wallpapers, and meaningful artwork fill the space, creating a layered and personal aesthetic. “Decorate for the now instead of resale value in the future,” she advises, “Do not design your home for someone else.”

Known for her knack for entertaining, the dining room is one of the most striking spaces in the house. Having

designed several tabletop items, her recent tablescape was published in the Supper Club, a book by Hoffman Media. Beyond the artfully curated table setting itself, the ceiling features her signature “Don’t Be Koi” wallpaper, and Kilkenny Green by Sherwin-Williams covers the walls. A Vietnamese red tree painting and her mother’s mirror add personal significance among other collected works of art from her travels.

The kitchen is designed for entertaining with a navy range hood, a blue zellige tile backsplash, quartz countertops, and coral velvet upholstered dining chairs. The morning room, where she and Chris enjoy coffee, is filled with natural light. JuJu’s own wallpaper design, “Wallflower” is on the ceiling, and funky upholstery accents make the space lively and curated. Deep espresso

hardwood floors ground the vibrant energy throughout the home. Custom upholstery, geometric patterns, and rich textures define each space. “My house is a big box of crayons,” she says.

The Taylor’s bedroom is a derivation of the bold and colorful aesthetic you see in the rest of the house. One of her favorite pieces is the Megan Molten x Mitzi Collection chandelier from Cregger Showrooms. Another favorite space is the vibrant guest bedroom, where JuJu makes her guests feel comfortable and special. Having lived in their home for almost a decade, a bathroom renovation was on the horizon earlier this year. As an avid supporter of local business, JuJu tackled her primary bathroom project with a team of professionals she found within the pages of Charleston Home + Design Magazine.

Large-format porcelain tile shower walls complement the penny tile flooring by Melcer Tile. A textured tile surrounds the soaking tub from Cregger Showrooms, along with the rest of the updated Kohler plumbing and Hudson Valley light fixture selections. A glass enclosure installed by Malibu Shower Enclosures frames the bathroom corner like art. JuJu’s signature Julianne Taylor x Mitchell Black wallpaper design surrounds the vanity with new Cooper Classics mirrors and countertops installed by MVP Granite, provided by Charleston Cosmos Granite & Marble.

The coral living room is full of collectibles from their world travels. Instead of designing the space at once, what we see today is years of adding and editing. She styles what she loves, and she buys what speaks to her. This design sense reveals itself through the kaleidoscope of color and pattern sprinkled throughout the home. Her statement furnishings are custom upholstered from Taylor Burke Home (now rebranded to High-Low Luxe). With a vast curated selection of home and style products online, homeowners and renters can customize their interiors with help from the style icon herself.

“Everything in our home has a story, and it’s a story of us,” her husband Chris says, whose work assignments took their family worldwide, where they collected artwork,

antiques, and artifacts that now fill their home. Their curated collection includes ancestral paintings, Chinese silk screens, and celadon pottery, among other historical relics. Today, their home is a visual narrative of their travels. JuJu’s influence extends to her children, who admire her strong sense of self and entrepreneurial spirit. The breakfast table is their favorite place to laugh and have thoughtful, open conversations. Their children, Blake, Grant, and Kate, also have the family’s love for history, language, and exploration. JuJu encourages her children to pursue their passions without societal pressure. “The goal isn’t just to get married and have children. I want them to pursue their own passions and dreams and to live for themselves,” she shares.

Connection & Community

Despite her many ventures, JuJu

remains deeply committed to creating meaningful relationships. She surrounds herself with strong, like-minded women who inspire and challenge her. “I am a connector,” she says, “You have to insert yourself in the right rooms. Don’t sit and Netflix your life away.”

Her mastermind group, ‘The Think Tank’, comprises five local women who are industry leaders. They meet regularly to exchange advice, celebrate wins, and provide honest feedback. “It is as much a business venture as it is group therapy. We support, coach, and show up for each other,” says fellow member Andrea Serrano. JuJu’s belief in self-worth extends beyond business. She advocates for women to embrace their values both personally and professionally. “Don’t give from an empty cup,” she says. A part of this means investing in relationships with

other women. At the heart of everything she does is good JuJu, a philosophy rooted in cultivating positive energy and deliberate living brimming with self-confidence. “Think of your brain as a supercomputer, and your thoughts are the program it will run. How you talk to yourself in the morning sets the tone for the day,” she says.

Living with Good JuJu

For JuJu, home is more than just a house. It’s an environment filled with warmth, personality, and emotional safety. She explains, “We try hard to create a safe space. It is okay to be mad, but it is not okay to be mean. Build a Better Deck

If your porch or deck built in the early 2000s hasn’t held up, you’re not alone. We spoke with local lumber yards to identify the latest changes in pressure treatments along with their recommended warrantybacked alternatives for your outdoor renovation.

The history of Pressure-Treated Lumber

Until recently, pressure-treated (PT) lumber has been the preferred material for decks, porches, and outdoor structures. Unfortunately, in the past 15-20 years, some PT lumber has failed due to changes in preservatives and treatments. Historically, it was preserved with chromated copper arsenate (CCA), an extremely effective treatment for resisting rot, insects, and moisture damage. Due to environmental concerns, the industry moved to alternative preservatives. While these newer treatments were designed to be safer, some formulations did not offer the same longevity, leading to premature wood failure in some exterior applications. This has prompted the development of enhanced PT options and alternatives like composite decking and exotic hardwoods like Ipe. The following products are popular with local homeowners seeking more durable and longlasting solutions.

Building Materials Supplied by Buck Lumber & Building Supply, Inc.

Today’s Pressure-Treated Lumber

BOSS (Buck Outdoor Super Select) Wood Pressure Treated, Custom Milled Lumber that is available in various profiles to meet diverse project requirements. It offers the same pressure-treated protection as YellaWood® brand PT pine and is kiln-dried prior to custom millwork, then oil base primed locally by Carolina Machine Finishing (CMF) after treatment for superior stability.

Available exclusively at Buck Lumber & Building Supply, Inc.

Southern Lumber & Millwork Corp.’s exclusive Elite Treated products are manufactured from C grade and better Southern Yellow Pine, pressure treated ground contact material and dried after treatment to ensure a uniform moisture content. It is milled for uniform dimensions. Each piece is then encapsulated locally by Carolina Machine Finishing (CMF) on all sides with a high-grade Sherwin-Williams oil-based primer, enhancing the durability and stability of the substrate by creating a vapor barrier. There is a Sherwin-Williams primer/paint warranty of 15 years and 25 years if a second coat is factory applied. Elite Treated products are manufactured locally to withstand the Lowcountry elements.  With dimensional and moulding profiles available, it’s the superior protection for your home.

Available exclusively at Southern Lumber & Millwork Corp.

Stabilized Weather-Resistant Wood is an advanced pressure-treated lumber designed for exterior applications such as decking, railing, and above-ground framing. Its key feature is the integration of a non-metallic preservative with a built-in stabilizer.

Available at 84 Lumber.

Ecolife®
Ipe Hardwood, also known as Brazilian Walnut

Alternative Materials

When considering the longevity of decking materials, composite decking is one of the most durable options, with a 25 to 50-year lifespan. Its extended durability is attributed to advanced engineering, including a protective shell that resists fading, staining, and mold. This ensures a long-lasting, low-maintenance outdoor surface in a variety of applications.

A LIFE DESIGNED FORwellness

Woodhouse Spa offers a sanctuary where guests can pause, recharge, and reconnect with themselves. In an age when we often rush from one task to the next, owner Kimmy Powell’s vision reminds us that true wellness isn’t just a luxury but an essential, transformative part of everyday life, whether at home or at work.

A LIFE DESIGNED FOR

After living downtown for ten years and expecting their second grandchild, Kimmy Powell and her husband embarked on finding their perfect next home, though there were a few nonnegotiables. Their new home needed to be on the water, elevated, with an elevator for their aging parents, a boat dock, and a pool. One could imagine her surprise when

they found this home checked all their boxes in a private development on Daniel Island. Kimmy shares, “I love quiet; I love solitude. This is the first home here where I feel like this is who I am.” Having lived in Ohio until her forties, Kimmy Powell offers us sage advice; “Get out more and do it sooner rather than later. Work backward. Ask yourself, ‘Where do I want to end up?’ And then list what you need to do to get there.”

“Natural light is key. I keep the doors open and the fireplace lit. It’s all about creating vacation-like spaces at home.”

A New Chapter

Kimmy Powell’s Charleston home is an extension of her identity. It has been thoughtfully designed, vibrating with color and layered with texture, and it’s constantly being improved. Though she has only been settled in this location for one year, everything feels specific to her vibe, from the soft glow of candlelight and the constant melody of a piano to the sculptural lighting, botanical patterns, and natural motifs punctuating each space. Her favorite space is the screened porch, a seamless blend of indoor-outdoor living, both comfortable and elegant.

She is drawn to layered, textural interiors bursting with pattern and personality. Some of her favorite brands, like Schumacher and Thibaut find their way into upholstery, wallcoverings, and window treatment trims in every room. Designer and chinoiserie expert, Aldous Bertram lent his

talents and helped Kimmy with bespoke furniture pieces, grasscloth selections, and custom drapery. His approach is meticulous, celebrating small details that create impact. Take the range of shades in the grasscloth ceiling and wall accents throughout the home, for example; they opted to blend two shades of blue between the living and dining rooms. Wellness is a guiding principle woven into both her home and daily routine. Piano music fills the space. Television is absent. “I realized in 2016 I needed to escape that,” she says. In terms of designing a space for wellness, Kimmy says, “Natural light is key. I keep the doors open and the fireplace lit. It’s all about creating vacation-like spaces at home.”

A House Called Home

In the kitchen, a velvet upholstered window seat with custom pillows boasting colors from the natural world

provides a pop of color upon entry. Custom trim on the window treatments adds another personality layer to this design. A scalloped table from Steven Shell Living makes this the perfect place for Kimmy and her husband to have breakfast before jetting off to their busy businesses. Chunky hardware and sculptural lighting take center stage among paneled appliances, lending a furniture-style appeal to this utility space, which is full of character, bursting with color, pattern, and texture. In the scullery, the unique wallcovering mirrors a natural wood grain and she added thick trim painted powder blue to contrast the existing navy cabinetry. For total function and improved entertainment, Kimmy upgraded the space with new plumbing fixtures, lighting, and a glass display shelf covered in the same print as the custom window treatments.

Because this is an open floor plan, Kimmy wanted the dining room to feel separate. She installed grasscloth wallpaper on the ceiling and further defined the delineation through the decorative wood beams. Kimmy’s living room is a delightful example of filling a home with what brings you joy. From the striking lime green upholstered table that houses dozens of designs and travel books to her Hungarian collectibles, the retro light fixture from Anthropologie is the cherry on top of this room.

“That was a significant change, but it’s what I needed to do to grow the business.”
Kimmy Powell’s Daniel Island home reflects her coastal style with pops of color and ambient lighting. To her, this house feels like a permanent vacation.

A LIFE DESIGNED FOR wellness

Designing Your Life

Beyond interiors, she has applied a design mindset to life itself. Her book, The Passion Purpose Project, explores the idea that life is a project you create with intention. Kimmy shares, “We all love design. We love decorating and styling outfits. But when I was mentoring, the questions always came back to the same thing: Where am I going in life? How do I get there?” Her advice? Do not compare. The opposite of comparison is authenticity. Nobody can take that away from you if you can be original.” In the book, she urges people to think critically about how they spend their time.

Simply put, Kimmy believes the things you invest time in are what ultimately cost you the life you want. With her trademarked Future Funnel Strategy, readers can work through the steps they need to live their lives in reverse, working towards the realized end goal. For her, the next chapter began when she moved to Charleston. “That was a significant change, but it’s what I needed to do to grow the business,” she tells us. I looked at my life differently and knew I wanted to live near the water and work remotely in this next chapter.”

Set against a backdrop of waterfront development, she opened her newest location in Savannah, GA, with a fresh

perspective on relaxation and wellness in a city brimming with charm and artistic energy. “I choose cities that inspire me,” Kimmy says. “Savannah is vibrant, creative, and multigenerational. Locals had been asking for an experience like Woodhouse Spa for a long time.” The Savannah Spa showcases Woodhouse’s newest design concepts and a variety of innovative services. Beyond classic massages and facials, guests can try advanced non-touch therapies such as vibroacoustic anti-gravity chairs, a hydromassage table, and an infrared sauna with salt therapy. For those looking to amplify relaxation, these high-tech, frequencybased experiences allow for deep wellness without direct therapist interaction. Even better for Charlestonians, these features are coming to Mount Pleasant this year.

The Necessity of Self-Care

Kimmy is the first to admit she used to see spa visits as a simple luxury. Over time, however, she recognized how critical rest and relaxation are for overall wellbeing. Woodhouse Spa’s core focus, she says, is to deliver “Transformative experiences of well-being,” tailoring each visit to the client’s unique needs. “If you’re drained, you can’t pour from an empty vessel,” she explains. “We want you to leave feeling recharged, whether you’ve had a hectic week or celebrating your 40th birthday with friends.” It’s

why Woodhouse offers everything from indulgent facials to hydromassage tables to quiet lounge spaces, so every guest can find the reprieve and rejuvenation they need. A self-professed fan of classic Swedish massages, Kimmy recently discovered a new favorite: an 80-minute HydraFacial with a J-Lo booster and lymphatic drainage. This treatment helps reduce puffiness, revitalize tired skin, and leave Kimmy feeling refreshed and camera-ready. In keeping with her spirit of innovation, she’s also excited to roll out brand-new options like the Waterfall Scalp Experience and expanded touchless services, ensuring each Woodhouse Spa location remains on the cutting edge of wellness trends.

Kimmy has built a business that champions transformation and selfcare through her many Woodhouse Spa locations and commitment to personal growth. Whether you’re a longtime spa enthusiast or new to self-care, her journey is an inspiring testament to the power of curiosity, courage, and everpresent change. We look forward to her second book, which will launch this year and chronicle her four-day power work-week. ✴
