SITE ANALYSIS

//Anchor stores are traditionally defined as the large department stores that we see as the primary draw to the shopping malls. However, the advent of e-commerce has changed how people usually shop for goods and also altered the role of these anchor stores. Weco.Hub promotes a new commonly shared spaces and social interactions between its residents. It will be experiential, practical, and closely

aligned with what today’s consumers want, to attract them for reasons other than simply buying a typical retail item. It will give access to what you need on daily basis and holding events and activities such as communal dinners, daycare, urban gardening, groceries, shops as well as workshops or classes, to make Weco.Hub a supportive everyday community for people of all ages, positions and backgrounds. //

3X3X3 Modular Unit System //The COVID-19 pandemic has made us reconsider how we live and our traditional models of life and work are changing. This project aims to widen the possibility of a vatety of flexible living arrangements for visitors to explore. The modular unit system is introduced for this proposal, taking on thoughts of a society where the individual is equally important to form a broader community.

The 3 by 3 by 3 module unit will be housing different program elements that can be combined to create a variety of flexible living arrangements and a village-like typology for visitors to explore. The unit can be attached and extended flexibly to react to different requirements and programs. Through duplicating the individual unit, the larger spaces got shaped.//

//All parts of the modular unit will be standardized and can be prefabricated in a factory and assembled on site. It allows a certain extent of flexibility when constructing on site to alter the program or add different functions on short notice, and even to transform into another program area in the future. It makes the construction and refurbishment process more efficient and cost-effective. To achieve living a sustainable life the modular unit system is intended to be disassembled and replace, reused and recycled over the lifespan of the building.//

Modular Design //In order to create the village-like typology, we took the areas of the program and divided it into different zones, which enables us to divide and stream visitors into separated public areas. A single module is a cell with one functionality, and by the combination of multiple ones, it can adapt to various space and functional requirements. Through duplicating the small unit, the larger spaces get shaped. This process takes on thoughts of a society, where the individual is equally important to form a broader community.//

Modular Structure //The modular units wrap the central atrium courtyard in 3 levels with every functional area facing the central common area. The entire Weco. Hub contains communal circulation, shared working and living spaces, retail and food spaces, daycare and playground, workshops, community garden as well as a central courtyard.

To connect each zoning certain functional spaces are designed within the module to become a bridge for both circulation and activity encounters, as well as provide each access for visitors, for example, vertical circulations, vertical gardens and lookout platforms.//

A workshop is an excellent approach to having the one-stop service demonstrating their craftsmanship. It is a medium where people from different fields obtain more exposure to the society, understanding the importance of craftsmanship and human relations. The more interaction between the craftsman and customers holding, the more attentive the one-stop service will be in this anchor shop.//

//Within the comtemporary shopping mall, Westfield Doncaster, hybrid spaces aim to draw out some key ideas and concepts and test these through design propositions, to look for opportunities in design strategies and techniques that can be built. In this case the retail shops that our group will investigate are Mr.minit, Mama Pho and Gorman. This design proposal intend to draw in consumers based on nostalgic

emotions and feelings through the sequence of shopping experiences as a series of scenes. It is aiming to design a community hub that provide flexible and sequential in-store experiences and interactions. The space allows groups to educate, gather input, share community experiences, launch events and interact with residents that will be adapting to the ever-changing needs of those who use it.//

Interaction (Human & Space) //As the three stores share the spirit of craftsmanship, the interior style of the entire space is to bring a workshop feeling. The timber trellis wall system runs the space’s length at varying heights connecting the three shops and extending at certain intersections to form display units, tabletops, or benches. The wall system splits the area horizontally with voids above, hints the imaginary for people in others and feels connected. While the voids below are adapted to create chairs and shelves. The box-like ceiling above the community hub is to create a more intimate surrounding environment.//

SITE ANALYSIS - RINGWOOD

// Transformability - Insertion - Social Distancing

//In an established neighbourhood with a large family and homeowner demographic, a brief escape can be highly appealing to Space and Co. members in this area. A resource such as a coworking site where the user can find a location to do some private work and take meetings and phone calls without distraction. The Eastland site offers users the ability to come to a place that can attend to their needs and is closely

related to resources such as grocery stores and food outlets that enable the users to undertake errands after completing their work in short hours. The relationship between tasks and the company’s ability to become a helpful resource in the lifestyles of its users, gaining customer awareness and knowledge to attain further members as the possibility of normality returns.//

CONCEPTUAL ACTIVITIES DIAGRAM

Design Concept //This idea of vertical social distancing potentially increases the usable space by building split level mezzanine platforms for users. Due to the limited and narrow space, leveling will be a suitable approach to maximize the space used and occupy more people than a single level. Jungle gym component will be used to create multilevel spaces. It could be a single room or a collection of rooms described as ‘a unity of separation and coherence’.

They are both removable and flexible to be removed or restructured based on business or user’s needs. This design will be ideal to occupy more users, especially in this narrow space, yet having their privacy. Well used space isnt a requirement for the design but a great consideration for business needs. Maximizing the input of people and providing a well-facilitated workspace for the neighbourhood’s users.//

SITE ANALYSIS - DOCKLANDS

//

//The Docklands site is a mixed-use environment with a combination of both casual and public coworking space which located close to the waterfront bay. The majority of users in the city are internationalised. Therefore a multi-working mode has more flexibility to meet different user’s needs and expectations. This site is aimed to have hospitality influence such as

cafe facilities for relaxing working and lifestyle. In the establishment of a new site, Space and Co. has decided to occupy one of the entry levels in the Digital Drive development by BatesSmart. This decision has been made to take advantage of visitors’ exposure to a new space, gaining traction to users who will begin to occupy this site.//

SITE ANALYSIS

//

//Pulau Pangkor Heritage centre is designing an institution to provide an education platform and research. It was also ideally designed to attract local and tourist to better understand the preservation and conservation of traditional Malay Timber House. The institution is also providing development funds for individuals, organisations and

businesses. The uniqueness of vernacular architecture at Pangkor Island is rich in natural resources, local cultures, and architecture. Vernacular architecture highly reflects on the local tradition, utilizing local materials and inspiration to restore the existing building with a sense of new dynamic character to it.//

Design Concept //The Heritage Centre is a non-profit organisation promoting awareness and appreciation of Pulau Pangkor’s properties. The programs engage with multiple communities related to historic preservation, including a Malay Village behind the site, which provides various activities to build relationships between visitors and between visitors

and Malay culture, an exciting and engaging area to activate the neighbourhood. The layout of interior space planning is in a scattered manner derived from the arrangements of the Malay House, to avoid blockage of wind path which is also a form of natural ventilation. //

AN EXTENSION OF “BACKYARD”

MOOD BOARD

//The pandemic has changed our routine way of life, introducing new and complicated rules that need to be followed. It has been the cause for many individuals to feel increasingly isolated and apprehensive about the changes that the pandemic may have caused. To encourage individuals to come back to the City of Melbourne, we must find ways to slowly ease individuals back into how things were before the pandemic. To allow for

a smoother transition back into “normal,” we need to bring the familiarity of our homes, which turned into safe havens during the lockdowns, into the urban context to mitigate anxiety and reduce stress for individuals. This will make people feel more at ease in urban environments and public settings, allowing them to take smaller and more manageable steps into COVID-19 normal.// 119

Wayfinding //DomestiCITY employs wayfinding strategies to promote ease of anchoring, familiarity and a sense of orientation across the city. Since the chosen sites function as ‘rooms’ within the urban environment, the connecting urban fabric such as streets and laneways become ‘corridors’ connecting these rooms to one another and allowing individuals to journey through the rooms. The anchor points are marked by unexpected domestic objects and elements in the form of installations or found object sculptures that evoke a domestic feeling within the urban context.//

// // AN EXTENSION OF HOME - DOMESTICITY -

WAY-FINDING MAP THROUGH 3 DIFFERENT SITES

//Following Suzie Attiwill’s provocation, the repurposed interior object, ‘invites other possibilities for thinking and designing interiors – and the practice of interior design– and brings the sensibility and techniques of interior design to the urban environment.’ In this context then, these design activations operate by introducing domestic material objects and artefacts into the urban field of perception in order to extend the private realm into the city and, ultimately to occupy space differently.//

121

SITE ANALYSIS - PUNCH LANE

Site Analysis //Punch Lane is an irregular lane as it began as a pedestrian-only access route on an upward slope, opens into a cul-de-sac court, and finishes with both sidewalk and a sideway. Rear 53/57 Lonsdale street has been chosen as a ‘backyard’ site location. A tree located in the middle with public seating, the only greenery with listless colours and materials in the surrounding area, such as grey concrete or bluestone paving. Pedestrians are the primary user, especially restaurant workers in that area, and vehicles are not accessible besides residents returning vehicles to the garage.//

Design Proposal //The design proposal in Punch Lane area will bring the backyard feeling and atmosphere, elevating some greenery elements and implementing some bbq and playfort to attract more crowds since it is off the main road. It creates a platform where more social opportunities are given to the locals, children, and workers from the city keen to gather around. Having a backyard is the essence of familiarity and having

play and fun, which easily bonds both adults and children. Besides that, it allows residents who live in the city and around this space to own a temporary backyard, inviting families and friends over for some memories, usually in suburban areas where all the houses have a backyard. This project is pet friendly as the growing global trend to consider the pet as part of the family, a great bonding agent of creating a ‘home’.//

Design Concept //This design proposal isn’t aiming to bring a house back to the city, but bringing ‘home’ back to the city, a place people can feel the sense of family and friends. Therefore, choosing a combination of a few common materials and objects of the house such as cushion, wood, and gardens into the design to create the atmosphere of the backyard.

Creating a threshold for people to slowly immerse into the home atmosphere, having space for families and friends to gather, especially some private space for kids which is necessary for each individual family with newborn babies. This ‘Domesticity’ is to bring people back to the city, a sense of belonging which involves friends and families.//

Besides that, kids’ playfort and some public seats are added between the vertical garden and the pallet deckings to invite more kids to create their fondest memories and

where families enjoy quality time. The backyard is made up of local plants obtained from local nurseries, inviting residents or visitors to grow locally and conserve natural resources. It aims to encourage public interest in a sustainable and effective urban environment to bring attention to neglected environments in the city.//

//Decking is the typical design for the backyard. The proposed decking design is integrated within stair seating, playfort, and outdoor living, using the limited space to maximize usage. Visitors are encouraged to explore the space and interpret its purpose through their own experiences and needs. In addition, a small space to fit everyone can increase the interaction and socialisation between humans, which develops a different level of community sense.//

ROOFTOP - BBQ AREA

Local Culture //To melt the idea into “Domesticity,” we brought in the typical “Aussie Barbecue” at the rooftop area. Barbecue is not just a cooking style but representing a unique Australian culture and identifying broader and dynamic contexts. Furthermore, this rooftop barbecue and kitchen area that directly connects with vertical gardens may ignite the importance of supporting local produce, developing the idea of ‘farm to fork’ for gastronomy sustainability that creates a direct relationship with the quality and freshness of the product that is being cooked without going through the store or market.//

// PAVING THE WAY FOR SOUTHBANK PROMENADE CHANGE - Safeness - Urban Intervention - Mixed Use Space

//The user’s misbehaviour plays a huge part in affecting the user’s experience in this area. Cyclists often disobey the speed limit especially cyclists. They often ride in speed to make sure they send the food on time. Speed restrictions is useless without speedometer, cyclist can’t estimate their own cycling speed and that will be quite risky in crowded area. They also barely ring the bell to give pedestrians notice, that will potentially creates some accidents if people aren’t aware of .

// Interactive Screen locate at Sandridge Bridge. To display some information and graffiti concept messages from public by using real-time system.

//Humans usually walk in their own convenient or comfortable route way. However this will slowly turns into unstructured flow and complicated movement. This situation is inefficient and very time consuming. How do we increase the walking efficiency and reduce time spending? What if we move the crowd to the side where the middle area will create more spaces? The idea of installing a social billboard on the bridge which allows the public to share their messages through app, creates some public interaction with pedestrians and new attraction in that area. This social billboard is open to the public to share their words, their feelings to the people.//
