For the third assignment for the semester AVI-D we have to create a motion graphic. The motion graphic is base on a poem or a voiceover from a company. I choose a poem written by my classmate Melody Abreu. The idea is to turn the poem into a motion graphic so people can easily understand the feelings about the poem. In this document I’ll be writing about my design proces on the motion graphic that I’m going to create.

2. Subject: Melody Abreu In this case the subject will be Melody Abreu, she is my classmate. She usually writes poems as a hobby. She is very creative in writing poems. Most of her poems are about the feelings when she explores or visits a new country. Melody Abreu travels around the world just to has inspiration to write new poem. For each place she visits, she gets new feelings for the country or city and that inspires her to write down a poem of her feelings. The poem that I’m going to make a motion graphic is called “Amsterdam”. In this poem Melody expresses her feelings when she arrived in Amsterdam. Furthermore Melody doesn’t only want to give the feelings by words, but also by look and feel. Her goal is to express her feelings visually through a motion graphic so people can really understand her poems.

4. Visual material based on design For the designing or the way I want to make my motion graphic I went to research on other motiongraphics. I find one that have inspered me how how I would like made my motion graphic. The following are the designs that has inspired me.

5. Concept (the poem) Amsterdam So I guess this is what it feels like Elevated like the days in Amsterdam But, yet so deep like the Adriatic Sea Though I know that the trees may not always grow green I also know for a fact, that when you’re down below, Blue isn’t all you feel It’s like climbing the highest mountain... Not caring about the fear of heights... Putting the broken pieces together, after a long wild night... So yeah... I guess this is what it feels like... Like the world is in your hand, though it isn’t yours to hold Speechless, because sometimes words are worth more than gold A rollercoaster ride, frightining and somehow fun I mean what would you do, if you were ever pointed with this gun...
6. Look and feel For the look and feel I choose to go with some bright color. Bright colors means happy or different moods (feelings). I choose bright colors, because the poem is about telling feelings. When you tell someone what your feelings are, don’t yoou feel colorful? Well, that is the look and feel I am aiming for. I will tuned down the brightness a bit, just to have the crisp of it. Otherwise it will be to colorful, like it’s something for children. Not to mention that I have choose these color, because it’s also refere to the target audience. The target audiences aren’t children, they are young adults. Here down below there are two images just to give a peek how the motion graphic will be at the end.
When the adrenaline kicks in, and the colors are so bright Would you run, would you put on a fight... Or would you just stand there like an obedient child? Me,, I just stood there... I just stand here... And its doesn’t mean that I’m obedient, nor a child... I meann it’s a frightening thing that’s for sure... But isn’t that the beauty of it...right? So yeah this is the feeling, many of us tend to feel... Fickle, but yet secure... Ordinary days in Amsterdam... An elevation so deep and pure...

8. Color use
9. Typography
The colors I have used I’ve already mentioned in the Look and Feel section. The colors some tuned down bright colors. I’ve chosen these colors because bright colors, as I mentioned before, is color to indicate human’s feelings. We as human has alot of different feelings for different moods and situation. These feelings or moods you could decribe them by colors. For example, red indicates angry, green indicates sick and much more to describe. Color using for my motion graphic is practically colorful, but still I willhave a basic color that I will use mostly in the motion graphic. The color that I will use basic is the orange color. I don’t have a specific color palette yet, so here down below I have some colors palette that I will combine them for my motion graphic.
Below you see I have done some researching on typography and I’ve came across with some typography that I’ve really liked and below are some images of the typography. Here I have choose some typography that inspired me.

First of all I came across with the font “Cinzel” which I really like to use it for the title and text in the motion graphic. The “Cinzel” font is more girly, elegant and modern. So that’s how I choose to use that typography for the title. Besides of that I also like the last typography on the last image below “Latin Modern Roman”. I find it so elegant and
nice typogrphy, so I decide to combine both typography together and see how it would look like. I’m also using “Latin Modern Roman” to write this document. It’s so clear and readable. The “Cinzel” is also good, but a disvantage of it is all the letters are in capslock and that is not that nice to read on a document.

10. Commentary/ audio/ audio-effects/ music
11. Budgetting
For my motion graphic there is a voice-over of the poem and I’m gonna use one music to make the motion graphic feels better, rather than just a voice. This time I’m gonna use sound effects for the logical objects, for example water (ocean) is coming up, ghost sound (music), ringing bell to fight and a magic sound effect when the heart pops out. These are the sound effects that I’m going to use. To put more sound effects in it, would makes it too chaotic.
I’ve probably have worked about more than 8 hours per day for a week or even less. I’ve used several plug-ins for the motion graphic, these plug- ins would cost around €150,-. Enery drinks that I ‘ve drank would probably cost around €10, to keep up the work. I think per hour it would cost me about €80,- to €90,- per hour.
With some sound effect will change alot of things, it will be different. For example a ghost sound effect when a ghost appear, that sound effect gives the tension of what’s going on.
12. Arguing designproces and technical proces.
The music that I will be using is an instrumental music “Heaven’s lullaby” by Big Rice. I’m using this music, because it fits to the theme that I’m aiming for. It sounds happy/relaxing, it fits just right with the feelings of the poem. This piano music sounds more like when you are dreaming, softly music inside your head.
The design proces has been fairly easy compared to the first assignment, the title sequence. If you have the right amount of inspirations and know the poem or voice-over you’re making, the motion graphic of the designing would go pretty quickly. The technical proces was pretty easy this time, because I’ve practiced alot during the first assignment. There is still some effects and technique that I need to firgure out how they did it. I’m still lack of skills in After Effect CS6, because I can’t find or make the effect that I really want. To make the motion graphic it took me not so long, but I still needed to spend time on some tutorials.

13. Reflection on designproces, realisationproces & results. As design proces I think that I’ve done pretty good. The design that I’ve chosen is simple and easy. I’ve done my research on the subject of the poem, typography, style and moodboard, so it might come out as a decent classy modern motion graphic. Designing or thinking for the animations or moves that I wanted to do was a bit difficult, it took me some time to think what I actually really want and what could fit the most with. The simple effect that I used mostly was the fade in and outs, because it gives a better feeling on certain things.

For the realisation proces it was better then I thought like the first assignment. This time I increase my knowledge in After Effect by practicing and play around with the settings and tools. For the motion graphic I was quite late with it, because I had exams of my previous semester. I only had less than a week to work on my motion graphic. I thought I’m not going to have enough time to finish it, but I did it. For the end result I’m quite happy, because atleast it looks like what I was going for. But still there are some points that are not what I was planning for. I imagine my motion graphic smoother, but some how I don’t think it runs that smooth. On my research I have come across with a motion graphic based on hand painted pictures, that look very nice but since there isn’t that much time to paint I stay with vectors. Every objects are made in vectors. It took me some time, but the result is more important and I’m happy with it.
