Last month we published an articled called "Be Bold, Be Brave, Be You". When we blogged about the article, we received a pretty big response. We heard things like: "I could write a book about all the things that I?ve stopped myself from doing because of fear, of being afraid I wouldn?t get it right, afraid of rejection, etc." "God has been calling me to be bold and brave in different areas of my life." "Thanks for this wonderful encouragement to do something that I would normally shy away from. " "I?m going to try to take your words to heart as I face this coming week! I recently moved to a new city, and have been having a lot of anxiety about establishing new communities and routines. Gotta try to get out of my comfort zone!" Thanks for the encouragement ladies. I feel completely cherished you took the time to write us to let us know we were helping somebody. You are cherished! 4 | October 2015

?There?s no wa y to b e a perfect mother a nd a million wa ys to b e a g ood one.? ? Jill Churchill I?ll never forget the first time I read the quote above. It jumped out from a page of Real Simple magazine years ago and grabbed my heart. I was in one of the busiest seasons of my life?working full-time, going to grad school, completing a book.
I f elt exhaust ed a lot of t ime. 6 | October 2015
And even beyond the physical fatigue, I felt like I was falling short in every area of my life. As a wife. As a friend. As a Christian. As a student. As a writer. I had convinced myself there was a right way to fulfill each of those roles. CherishedMagazine.com
And no matter how hard I tried, I couldn?t make that ?right way? work in that season of my life. H ave y ou ever f elt t hat w ay ? When I read the quote
?There?s no wa y to b e a perfect mother a nd a million wa ys to b e a g ood one.? ? Jill Churchill
It opened the door to solutions. I hired a maid. I sent my friends emails when we couldn?t get together face-to-face. I prayed on my commute to work.

it gave me permission to adapt. To figure things out. To let good enough really be good enough sometimes.
My husband and I were not eaten by dust bunnies. The grammar police did not lock me away for my rough drafts. No lightning bolts struck when I occasionally missed church because I needed sleep more than a sermon. I ?m not an advocat e of being crazy-busy as a lif est yle.
There?s no way to be a perfect wife, friend, Christian, student, writer but there are a million ways to be a good one.

The pace I was going at wasn?t sustainable long-term. But sometimes God calls us to seasons of busyness, difficulties, or challenges and we?ve got to figure out a new normal for that CherishedMagazine.com | 7
This season will pass for you. And then you?ll need new solutions for the next one. time. If we refuse to adjust and instead firmly cling to our ?right way? for everything then we?re asking for burnout and broken relationships. How do you need t o f ill in t hat blank t oday?
There?s no wa y to b e a perfect ________ b ut there a re a million wa ys to b e a g ood one.
All of our lives we?ll be changing, adapting, growing, speeding up, slowing down. That simply means we?re human and we?re alive. Want to stay the same in every season? Consider becoming a rock. Otherwise embrace the freedom that ?s yours and relax a bit. As I look back on that crazy time in my life, my only regret is that I didn?t extend even more grace to myself.
Give yourself permission to figure out those million ways {or at least a dozen}. It ?s okay.
You?re doing better today than you realize, friend. Really.

Ev er h a d ?o n e o f t h o s e d a y s ?? Felt like there was too much to do, not enough of you and no end in site of the things to get done? When we are under stress, we automatically hold our breath or begin to breathe in a shallow manner. It is part of our body?s way of getting ready to handle the ?threat?. That is how God made us to handle fight or flight when we run into a bear or lion. That shallow breathing can cause our bodies to stay in ?stress? mode 24/ 7, which impacts all of our stress hormones (including cortisol which impacts weight), exhausts our brain (it runs out of fuel) and sets the stage for inflammation which as at the root of all chronic disease. October 2015
It?s easy to see that we do that under stress, but did you know it is also happens every time we text or use our computer? The position of our neck, (looking down) stimulates that same response. Our lack of awareness doesn?t keep it from happening, nor does it keep us from the consequences. Good News to this Not-so-Good News: It is truly easy to change this situation with 3 Simple Steps!
St ep # 1 Ju s t ?4- 2 - 4?It !
That is a simple code for breathing in for a count of 4, hold for a count of 2 and exhale for a count of 4. That is a mere 10 seconds and when done six times (60 seconds), you can actually feel CherishedMagazine.com | 17
your body relax and shift into calm, out of stress! Deep, relaxed breathing has been shown scientifically and clinically to help reduce stress and shift your nervous system (and thus your brain) out of fight/ flight into calm. This is a great technique to use before texting, emailing or being on the computer. It is great to do when driving or when you feel yourself in ?high react?times.
of four hours of sleep! Go to http:/ / cheryltownsley.com/ index.cfm for more details on this simple and restorative pose.
Do your 4-2-4 breathing and you double the benefits!

T a k e a n R& R Va c a t i o n
When we are stressed our brains demand more air (breathing), water and good fats. You know how to breathe. We can carry our water bottle and get our water.
Sometimes ?life? doesn?t allow for a ?vacation?in the traditional sense. But we can give our body a break right where we are.
Instead of going to a carb or sugar (which doesn?t help our stress issue), consider a good-fat treat that will actually help you!
Fifteen minutes in the R&R position is equivalent to the rest
Good fats (grass-fed butter, avocadoes, coconut oil, nuts,

seeds, grass-fed meats, wild fish, etc.) are excellent fuel for every part of our body AND they can help with weight loss (a topic for another time). Chocolate Mousse is one of my favorite treats from my new cookbook Cooking for Life. It is
easy to make in your food processor and can be eaten cold, at room temperature or even frozen. Enjoy this treat, breathe, and put your feet up; know your outlook can change in just a minute!

Finding Your By Sher y l Ly n n Si l er I lead a small group bible study. Have for a few years now. We have had seasons of some very intense studies. Then there were seasons of coming together to just ?hang out?.
A sparkle is something good. In this exercise, a sparkle was not to mean what great things you did, bought or accomplished but what did God accomplish? What had He done?
This fall season, I have decided to do a combination of both -conversation over snacks and a devotion/ study time.
How did God show up
To kick off the season after our summer break, I was lead to ask the question "Tell us about your sparkles over the summer?"
like a ?Sparkle?? Take a moment to answer that same question. Where have you see God show up in a big way lately ... a "Sparkle"? When I asked the question that night I thought it would be an easy peasy ease into our group kind of question?
41 | October 2015
CherishedMagazine.com
I myself was having a tough time just choosing one or two of my many sparkles to share with the group. For some yes, it was easy peasy. They could list off the top of their head at least 5 or 6 sparklies. For others in my group the minute I asked the question I heard grumbles and groans--no sparkles in my summer. ?Really none?? I thought trying to decide what to do.
If I asked you the question right now about your last month, what about you? Are you? ..
Many sparkl es? or No sparkl es t o be f ound?
October 2015
I started with the ones in our group who could name off some of their ?sparkles? as I still tried to figure out in the back of my head what to do with the ?no sparkles group?. We had ladies who landed jobs. We had ladies who had visits from family. We heard stories of God?s provision and we heard answered prayers. And then a wonderful thing happened as others began to fill the room with their "sparklies". The ones in the group that grumbled and groaned ?No sparkles here?? all of a sudden could pick out a few sparklies of their own. No help from me. It seemed that for a moment they stopped looking at the bad things going on and started to intentionally look for God in all things ... the little things ... and all of sudden their life had a bit more shine.

Three Quick Ways to Find Your (The shiny gems God gave you.) 1. Look for them. Change your focus. Just like my friends who couldn?t see until they started to shift their focus. When you set your intention to find them? you will see them. I remain confident in this:
I wil l see t he goodness of t he LORD in t he l and of t he l iving. Psal m 27:13 NIV
2. Give thanks to God when you see his provision and presence. When we are seeking and being thankful in the moments of our life, it just leads to us learning to lean on and recognize that God is there.
43 | October 2015
CherishedMagazine.com
3. Write down the good things God has done on a regular basis. I wil l remember t he deeds of t he LORD; yes, I wil l remember your miracl es of l ong ago. Psal m 77:11 I like how the Message Bible put its Psal m 77:11-12The Message (MSG) 11-12 Once again I?l l go over what God has done, l ay out on t he t abl e t he ancient wonders; I?l l ponder al l t he t hings you?ve accompl ished, and give a l ong, l oving l ook at your act s. I can imagine laying out the pages of my journal and ?once again go over? what God has done.
So if you are having a rough time finding your sparkles, simply look for them, give thanks when you find them and write them down so you can remember them. You may just be surprised how bright and sparkl y each day is. October 2015
