“Self-preservation” they call it here in England; I call it “I never want to have my heart broken again.” And my heart did indeed break, the day I saw how things may never change within my own family. While my sister angrily vented about the same old story yet again, I suddenly had a glimpse of what the future may hold for us.

I saw how, 20 years on, we would still be having the same conversation, in the same manner, using the same heavy words. And in that moment, I was called to make a quick decision: would I choose me or them? There are choices in our life that will change the course of our journey and which may take us away from our pack, The reasons behind them are often so profound, words may not be able to express their depth. We may attempt to explain, and yet our folks may not be ready to hear. Whatever the motif is, do we choose ourselves or them? Can we walk away from what no longer nurtures our hearts? Can we stay, knowing that our heart will bleed to a slow death instead?
