Tie-less EFF gets the boot Members of the EFF was once again kicked out of the Govan Mbeki Municipality’s council chambers on Tuesday morning. This was the second time the EFF members were forcefully removed from council for not adhering to the dress code. Men are supposed to wear ties when the council is in session as it is befitting an “honourable” councillor. As security personnel scuffed in to land a few kicks and punches, the resisting EFF members retaliated by throwing water at the municipality’s hired muscle. Tables and chairs were wet and laptops and cell phones were also showered. Before the commotion, an hour was used discussing the matter of EFF members not wearing ties. Encee van Huyssteen, DA councillor, said: “The ANC have once again chosen to enforce the standing orders at Govan Mbeki municipal council meetings. “While the standing orders is quite clear regarding the notice times for convening of council meetings and submitting documentation to councillors in preparation for council, the Speaker of the ANC have chosen to ignore this and continue in transgressing of these standing orders. “The EFF were forcefully and violently removed from council due to the

interpretation of standing orders regarding the dress code. “This is while the speaker specifically chose to allow his ANC cadres to transgress the dress code, simultaneously choosing to evict the EFF. “We witnessed on Tuesday, the full extend that the ANC is willing to go to protect their own transgressions. “Security were called to remove EFF members and the security consisted of two people who could not be identified as security, dressed in overalls. “We call on the Speaker to account for this gross misuse of power and to adhere to his own standing orders.” Jana Oosthuizen

The executive mayor, Flora MaboaBoltman, admitted on Tuesday (28 February) during a council meeting that Eskom will cut Secunda’s power if the municipality cannot pay them. The municipality owes Eskom R400 million. She said at a previous council meeting that a company called Mzilampi 2 (Pty) Ltd will pay

off Eskom’s debt, but the municipality failed to provide any further information about Mzilampi and the mayor admitted on Tuesday that there is no plan B for the Eskom debt. The mayor said the municipality is still running Project Kodiko where they try to collect money from defaulting consumers in order to pay Eskom.

Man shot dead in eMbalenhle A 47 year -old man was shot and killed at about 13:00 in eMbalenhle on Wednesday. According to the police, the victim was attacked by two suspects who are believed to be between the ages of 20 and 30 years old. The victim was shot several times when he was walking out of his kitchen door to his office where he runs his cash loan business. When the victim was shot, his wife,

daughter and assistant were in the office. It is further alleged that the suspects made off with undisclosed amount of cash, as well as the victim’s firearm. Immediately after the shooting, the victim was transported to the clinic where he was certified dead on arrival. The suspects are still at large. The Police request anyone who can assist with information to contact their nearest police station.

Two sentenced for murder Two people were sentenced in the Evander Regional Court last Thursday for kidnapping, torturing and murdering Tauraye Mithize five years ago. Siphiwe Mcube (35 at the time), Zola Sithole (25 at the time) an 24 year old Armando Mambiro (at the time) kidnapped, tortured and killed Mithize and buried the body in a shallow grave in Rodebank road in February 2012. After intensive investigation the trio were arrested and pointed out where Mithize was buried. His partially decomposed body was unearthed from where the accused

pointed out. Investigation revealed that the victim was accused of stealing R9 000 from Mncube. Mncube thereafter requested Sithole and Mambiro to assist him to torture Mithize. The torture included assaulting the victim and burning his feet on a hotplate. Mncube was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment and Mambiro nine years imprisonment. They were both declared unfit to possess the firearms by Evander regional court last Thursday Capt Magonseni Nkosi said. Sithole died in prison in 2015

They also parked their trucks in the entrances of the parking area and blocked access. Councillors arrived at the scene and went into a meeting with the mayor and other government officials to resolve the matter. Eventually, Theuns Koekemoer of the local traffic department spoke to the people and asked them to remove the rubbish and open the entrances to the parking area. André du Preez, owner of the road leading to the dumping site, closed the road on Friday (24 February) because the road was inaccessible due to the rain and also because Interwaste stopped their services as they were not paid by Govan Mbeki Municipality for three months. Interwaste is a company responsible for maintenance and security at the dumping site. It is alleged that the municipality did make payments on Friday and Interwaste resumed their services on Wednesday morning (1 March). Several residents started dumping their waste next to the road near the dumping site during this time. André experienced similar problems three years ago and then also closed the road leading to the dumping site.

Police find baby on dumping site Police are still waiting for the post mortem report of the body of a baby boy, estimated to be six months old. His body was found on Secunda rubbish dump on Monday morning. The police suspect the infant’s naked body was dumped there last week. The little corpse has already begun to decompose. The scavengers who found the body called a security guard at the dumping site. The police suspect the dark-headed child might be a white baby. Looking past the decomposition, the boy appears light in complextion with a mop of hair. If you know the parents or family of the baby, contact the police at 017 624 2020. Famsa says: Marcelle Bester, provincial director at Famsa (Families South Africa) and other social workers gave some advice to people considering starting a family: New parents must have a support network and not hesitate to reach out for help. “They must also be aware of their own emotional state so that they can give the best for their new baby. New parents cannot trust anybody with their baby and must be especially careful of family and friends who do not have pure intentions. In most cases, child abuse is committed by a person known to the victim, it is thus a wrong impression that strangers will do more harm to children.”

The body of a baby boy was found at Secunda rubbish dump on Monday morning. Her advice to prospective parents is to determine the stability of their own relationship before deciding to have a baby. “Couples must not think a baby will fix their problems or make a life partner more committed. If abuse is part of a relationship, the parents must consider the safety of the child at all times even if it is at the cost of the relationship.” Nurses must act in advance in terms of post-natal depression and they must also identify warning signs such as a mother with little or no support, a mother with an unplanned pregnancy and an abused mother will be more desperate to let her baby disappear or neglect him. “Prevention of unplanned pregnancies and family planning is important and there are several options for mothers with unplanned babies, such as adoption and guidance and support from the parents. - Jana Oosthuizen

Mall pays school fees For the past 3 years of its existence, Secunda Mall has aimed to be a loyal community player in the area. Secunda Mall constantly endeavours to support valued shoppers and to sincerely make a difference where possible. In this light a Back-to-School promotion with a difference was launched - a Back-to-School project that would really touch lives for the better. In January Secunda Mall launched a competition where relevant pupils could win their school fees paid in full for an entire year. “Our hearts were touched by the many amazing stories we received – stories of survival, passion and dedication,” says Jani Zaayman, Marketing Manager. The Mall management decided to assist three school kids -two from Marietjie School and one from Hoërskool Oosterland. “We commend these pupils for their will to succeed and truly hope that this contribution towards their education will bless and encourage all to reach even more heights in future.”

Ngwenya (eMba Wrestling Club) and Neill Duvenage (Central Gauteng) are locked in a grip in their wrestling match at the SA trials for cadet, junior and senior wrestlers held at Secunda Sasol Club the past Saturday. The aim of the trials is to select South Africa’s best wrestlers to compete in the Africa Champions in Morocco in April. Photo: Encee van Huyssteen.

Number 25 for Collin Thomas Collin Thomas, an avid road runner from Secunda on 11 March will be running his 25th Kosmos 3-in-1 race. He has run every one of the Kosmos races since its beginning. The PWC Kosmos 3 in 1 consists of a 42km race starting at 06:00, at 21km race at 13:00 and ending with a 10km race at 17:00. Although runners have an option to compete in only one race or in all three, Collin has always done all three races in one. Collin has a special love for this race. “The Kosmos 3 in 1 came about through the collective interests of Trichardt Triathlon Club, Secunda Marathon Club and Sasol Marathon Club sharing a vision to hold this unique race of which I was part thereof, and assisted, marketed and strove to make it an event that runners wanted to participate in. The aim was to give runners the chance to see how well they were prepared for the coming Comrades. The race originally started in Trichardt, then moved to Evander, then Sasol Club and now has its home at Lake Umuzi,” explains Collin. His advice to novice runners on how to approach this kind of race, is simple: The more kilometres you run in preparation, the

better. “One needs well more than 200 km to run a comfortable Kosmos. Each race should not be raced, but be well-paced, as it is a day of running, and to miss a 21.1 or 10 km because one pushed too hard on the marathon is not a wise decision. “With sufficient hydration on the day and light snacks between the runs, one will not be too heavy and uncomfortable starting the next run. Clean kit, dry shoes and socks for each race will help to make it easier to focus on the run,” says Collin. His own best running achievement was undoubtedly last year’s PWC Kosmos 3 in 1 (Collin’s 24th race). “Considering that I had my prostrate removed on 12 January and with only park runs that I walked after 6 weeks, I managed the cut-offs with the Good Lord’s help.” Collin began running in 1983 to reduce the number of cigarettes he smoked per day. He quit smoking completely when, in 1987, he prayed for release from this habit. “My first race was the Sakekamer 25 km on 27 August 1988 which started in Evander to Secunda at the newly built stadium. My time was 2:29:27. I ran in North Stars and had extremely sore feet thereafter.” Collin can boast with a long list of marathons completed. These include the Comrades (22 runs), City to City (16 runs), Karoo Ultra Marathon (12 runs), Two Oceans Marathon (10 runs) and the 1 000Km Challenge (21 challenges).
