“Third force with criminal elements” is behind protest Allegations has been made that a third force with criminal elements is behind Monday’s violence at SkyHill. A supposedly peaceful march transformed into anarchical chaos on Monday as disgruntled youth threw stones at the police and security guards, set fire to the grass along the road between Secunda and Evander and broke off traffic signs. The mob of about 300 people arrived per bus at the assemble point next to the Secunda graveyard in the morning and then marched to SkyHill and its training centre, Mshiniwami, only to find no one at home. The marchers were visibly upset that no-one from the Hydra-Arc Group was there to receive their memorandum. Instead, they were met by a line of security guards armed with paintball guns, four German Shepherds and their handlers and members of the police’s public order unit. The man who appeared to be the spokesman of the protestors told the police that “this is unfair”. The protesters barricaded both lanes of the double road with people, stones and any other form of debris they could find. Signs with slogans such as Corruption must fall were wielded around. One man seemed a bit out of sorts as he was waving a makeshift cardboard poster

with the words “tar surfacing”. He later added this poster to the pile of torn up signs the marchers had ripped off the fence at the SkyHill facility. After about an hour in the morning heat, emotions were boiling over. Some protestors began hurling insults at the guards. Others clobbered cars of motorists who wanted to drive pass. The thick smell of dagga hung in the air. Suddenly the mob began to scatter in several directions, all the while flinging stones at the guards and police. The police used rubber bullets and tear gas as they chased down the rioters who, at that point, were setting fire to fields and vandalising traffic signs. The group apparently represented the Itemba Labasha Youth Forum. Dimitri van der Westhuizen, CEO of the Hydra Arc Group said the march was orchestrated and planned by a third force with a strong criminal element. “This youth group is funded, but has no affiliation to any political party, has no support from the community and one of its leaders appears to be an ex-convict who is allegedly out on parole. None of them are students at Mshiniwami.” Dimitri said Hydra Arc had long ago planned to close all its facilities on

Monday to give their employees a long weekend off. “The date of this so-called peaceful march has been rescheduled several times. We were part and parcel of their stakeholder meetings. At the first meeting, the group retracted their intention to march. At a second meeting, they could not get their logistics in place as to where they would assemble, and so on. We were ejected from their third meeting. Had

they allowed us to stay, they would have known that we were closed on Monday.” Dimitri also refuted the demand of employment percentages 60% local intake. “Actually, we already have an intake of more than 85% in locals.” He said the company has evidence of a third force’s involvement and will not rest until those responsible are brought to book.” - Arisja Misselhorn

Angry residents took to the streets and protested on the R29 road between Kinross and Leandra on Wednesday, 22 March. They blocked the road by throwing stones and burning tyres. This came after Govan Mbeki Municipality has gone out in full swing to disconnect electricity and water supply. According to Bheki Kubheka, Acting Head of Marketing and Communications at Govan Mbeki Municipality, the municipality has embarked on a debt collection operation called Koleka di Koloto (Kodiko) and started disconnecting supply to businesses that are not paying their municipal accounts. “The operation is an ongoing process and the next phase will involve cutting electricity and restricting water on households owing municipal services,” said Bheki. “Consumers are encouraged to approach the municipality and pay their outstanding accounts to avoid cut-offs. “The non-payment of municipal

services has a direct adverse impact on service delivery.”

Municipal employees embark on Project Kodiko and disconnected the water supply to businesses in Leandra last week.

Sasol declares War on Leaks Sasol and its collaborative partners, Cobra Watertech (Pty) Ltd, Rand Water, Gert Sibande TVET College and Govan Mbeki Municipality launched the War on Leaks Project Plumbing Learnership for unemployed youth in the Govan Mbeki municipal area on Wednesday, 15 March. A total of 60 youngsters will be trained as learner plumbers through a 18 month programme. They will be trained at the Gert Sibande TVET College Skills Academy in Standerton. At the end of their training, the participants will receive accredited NQF level 4

qualifications in plumbing and will be awarded a chance to undergo on the job training where they will work at selected Govan Mbeki municipal schools and municipal facilities. Sasol supported the Department of Water and Sanitation’s call to save water with its War on Leaks campaign last year and the first phase of the campaign identified six schools within the Govan Mbeki municipal area with high water consumption as a result of water leaks. Water consumption at all six schools averaged 1 000 m³/ week, which was reduced to 275 m³/week. Sasol helped the municipality to save 60% of water at these schools. The campaign won a Responsible Care Award

(category A) from the Allied and Chemical Industries Association. “Sasol remains committed to the success of communities and municipalities around our operations,” said Maureen Mboshane, Vice President for Corporate Affairs, Sasol Secunda Operations. “I hope the learnership recipients will take the opportunity with both hands and complete the training with flying colours in order to set the standard for the others that will follow.” Andy Camphausen, Cobra Inland Specifications Manager said: “Cobra has a proud history with our plumbing fraternity and in light of this history, we believe in continued skills development. “Cobra is proud to be associated with the War on Leaks Project Plumbing learnership for unemployed youth. “We are committed to uplifting communities by providing people with skills that will help them better their lives and provide skills that communities will benefit from.” Youngsters who take part in the learnership and sponsors at the launch of the project last week.

Bethal Prison outreach

Royal Family Kids need volunteers and support to help abused children create new, happy memories.

Royal Kids needs volunteers The Royal Family Kids organisation will be hosting a camp from 2 to 7 April during the school holiday for physically, sexually and emotionally abused children. The organisers of the camp still need volunteers to work at the camp. This year’s camp will take place at OpiPlaas outside Bethal. About 24 children will be attending this camp. God First/God Eerste Church is involved with Royal Family Kids. Sonja Beukes, organiser, said they plan to make it a fun week for the children to create new, happy memories. The children will cycle, shoot with a bow and arrow, do art,

eat in a coffee shop at the camp and they will also attend a formal function where they can dress up. “Some of these children have never been to a coffee shop,” said Sonja. There will be a jumping castle and the organisers are planning a big birthday party to celebrate all the children at the camp’s birthdays. Sonja said Royal Family Kids has been hosting these camps in South Africa for 15 years now. It is a concept that came from America. “I see the change in the children when they come back for the camps the following years,” said Sonja.

They try to make the children feel part of a family. One specific adult will do everything at the camp with his small group of children. “Each little group will be like a family for the week,” said Sonja. There will also be a doctor, nurse and counsellor at the camp should the children need it. Sonja still needs people to do arts and crafts, as well as other activities with the children. “Even if you can only help out for a few hours a day or one day that would help,” said Sonja. To get involved or to make a donation, contact Sonja at 082 874 5812.

LIGHTS OUT...

The urban man’s guide to surviving power outages

Preparing for a Power Outage Power outages are a major inconvenience. However they do happen from time to time. Under normal circumstances, many criminals avoid homes with a security system. When the power goes out, some burglars see it as an opportunity to scout for homes that may be vulnerable. Here’s what you can do to deter criminals from targeting your home. First, prepare some simple supplies to keep you out of the dark if a power outage were to occur. For example, consider keeping flashlights with extra batteries in a designated area if the power goes out. Flashlights will help you get around the house safely. Some homeowners choose to use kerosene

lamps used for camping in order to provide light. Try to avoid using candles. Just remember that these can be a fire hazard. Keeping some type of light visible in a power outage can deter criminals immensely. If a burglar can see that your house is occupied, they will be far less likely to target your home. Having a built-in safe can be a good way to protect your valuable possessions, especially if you plan to leave you home. Some homeowners decide to have a generator hardwired to the electrical panel. If you choose to opt for a generator, or already have one, be sure the home security system is on one of the circuits that the generator powers.

LIGHTS OUT...

The urban man’s guide to survivin

What to cook? There are a number of different options to cook, even if there is no electricity. A gas stove is a good option or if it is not to cold, a braai is also a good option. To stock up on ‘emergency food’ is essential for times when the electricity goes off. • Enough drinking water • Canned food • Dry cereal • Dry fruit • Fresh fruit

Entertain the kids How will you entertain your children if the electricity goes off? Keep a box of entertainment ready for them for in case. Candles are important for your box to make sure you have light. Pencils, pens, crayons, paper, colouring books, games, paint, clay, glue and scissors are other necessities to keep in your emergency toy box. Other ideas: • Shadow puppets • Put on a puppet show • Books • Play hide and seek • Tell stories • Card and board games • Toys that do not need batteries • Make your house an obstacle course • Colouring • Arts and crafts • Put on a play or play dress up • Play word games like Hangman • Build things out of clay

Gear up

Purchase light producing objects. Gather all the things that may provide light, such as a flashlight, candles, glowsticks, etc., and place them in an easily accessible area. Attach iridescent or glow in the dark stickers on flashlights so that they can be easily located in little or no light. Keep glowsticks in the freezer. The cool temperature in your freezer will slow the rate of reaction in the glowstick and make it last for 4-5 days instead of one or two. Stick candles in pots that are deeper than the candle is long. That way, the light will reflect off of the side of the pot, creating more light, and will lessen the likelihood of a fire. Keep a first aid kit handy. You never know what emergency might happen during a power outage, so it’s wise to stay prepared with a few days’ worth of medication. Your first aid kit should include bandages

p on essentials (various sizes), gauze, tape, scissors, antiseptic solution such as hydrogen peroxide, antibiotic ointment such as Neosporin, and pain medicine. You can buy first aid kits at various drugstores or assemble your own. Keep a stash of batteries. Make an inventory of the different kinds of batteries your electronics use instead of assuming they all run on double-A or triple-A. Buy batteries in bulk — more than you think you’ll need — so that you’ll have a good amount in case of a prolonged outage. Have your emergency numbers stored. If and when the power outage does occurs, inform the municipality (once will do) and they’ll give you an estimate of when you can expect to get electricity back. Knowledge is power. Purchase and use self-powered radios and self-powered flashlights. Self-powered radios

Gas cylinder If you switch over to using gas, keep these safety tips in mind when handling and refilling your gas cylinder: • All gas cylinders needs to be checked for leakages, rust, dents, illegally painted before cylinder can be refilled. • Always make sure there is sufficient ventilation of fresh air in the room where you use your gas cylinders. • Cylinders must be kept in an upright position at all times and when stored or used it should be standing on a flat and dry surface. • Cylinders must be kept upright when transporting it - cylinders are not allowed to lie down even when empty. - EPAG

and flashlights employ a hand crank to get the device going, so it’s a good alternative to have if you happen to run out of batteries. Radios will help you stay informed of what’s happening. Try to keep abreast of what’s happening in the case of severe storms, as the authorities might issue an evacuation notice or other pertinent information. Radios will also be a good distraction for when your other distractions aren’t up and running. When your TV and computer won’t turn on, you can always settle for an entertainment on the radio waves. Hey, Garrison Keillor beats twiddling your thumbs! Have car chargers for your cell phone. So the electricity won’t work, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use your car as one big battery. Be careful not to kill your car battery when you’re charging your phone. Not being able to start your car is probably more problematic than not being able to start your cell phone. Several local kids are currently receiving free golf lessons from a Mpumalanga golf champ and golf coach endorsed by the South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB). This Programme is developed and supported by the South Africa Golf Development Board. The SAGDB’s main aim is to make golf available to all South Africans throughout different communities. It believes that by making golf accessible and more appealing to youngsters, it will be able to teach the younger generation of South Africans a sport that has an integral set of rules and values,

which can be applied in all spheres of life. The main goal is to take the game of golf to the children in a community and provide them the chance to develop into elite players. The programme is free to all as well as providing the practice facilities and equipment for absolutely no cost at all. The coaching takes place on weekday afternoons at Graceland Country Club. Stephen Morrison (Bachelor of Sport Science and Recreational Management Hons / PGA Diploma obtained from the University of Pretoria) is providing the coaching on behalf of the SAGDB.

“We currently have 11 children in the programme and will be reaching out to more schools in the near future,” says Stephen. Sponsors to the SAGDB are Alfred Dunhill Links Foundation, The Sports Trust, Nedbank, The Richer foundation, The Ernie Els Invitational and the Mpumalanga Golf Union. “Without them nothing would be possible, for more information you can check out the SAGDB’s website at www.
