The Kosmos 3-in-1 is here!

The 25th PwC Kosmos 3 in 1 race is taking place this weekend with Lake Umuzi as the start and finish points. This concept to lure staunch road runners to the Eastern Highveld for an endurance race they had never experienced, was the brain child of local running enthusiasts and business people Ria van Schalkwyk, Jan Pieterse and Louis Hilligan, joined by a few stalwarts from the Sasol Marathon Club and the Secunda Marathon Club. The first race started at a sports store in Trichardt 26 years ago, with the only option of completing all the races in one day. This rule was later changed to accommodate those runners who wished to run only individual races and the not the entire 73,3km broken up into 42km in the early morning, 21km at lunch time and 10km late in the afternoon. Although the main sponsors of this unique race have changed throughout the years, and despite it almost being “highjacked”, the race just continued to grow, drawing top South African runners such as Sipho Ngomane, Bruce Fordyce, Nick Bester and Lindsay van Aswegen. It was under the guidance of one such running legend that the Kosmos 3 in 1 was held in Pretoria one year. Local marathon clubs stuck to their guns to

have this race unique to this area back in Secunda. This lead to skipping a year, but organisers prevailed. The Secunda Marathon Club has since been the organising force behind the PwC Kosmos 3 in 1. The event was sponsored and hosted by Lake Umuzi for several years before PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) took over sponsorship in 2015. Lake Umuzi continues to host the event. Secunda fire station gets facelift Wie is ons / who are we: 017 631 1903 / 017 631 1845

The front view of the Secunda Fire Station has recently had a facelift thanks to the generosity of local businessmen.

Roos & Rosslee built a platform on which an olden day 50kg DCP Fire extinguisher is mounted. The company also erected a memorial wall behind this display, as well as repaired and recovered the thatch roof of the station’s lapa. Modern Collision Repair resprayed the extinguisher to its former glory. Douw Botha, Senior Station Officer, said 50kg dry chemical powder extinguishers such as the one in front of the fire station, are still in operation within some industrial plants. Two men

must operate it at a time. “This one brings back memories of the time I was initiated as fireman some 25 years ago. Those days rookies were tarred and feathered and then made to haul this huge fire extinguisher around the town centre.” Johan Rosslee of Roos & Rosslee said the work done was with the aim to beautify the town. Other things at the station in dire need of repair, include the roof of the men’s quarters, an updated road map and the pond in the station’s courtyard.

Bring out the gas Residents can expect to be without electricity supply for several hours per day. With no means to pay their outstanding Eskom bill of about R400 million and no plan B in place, the Govan Mbeki Municipality will feel the wrath of Eskom as from 13 March. Thus far, Eskom is determined to cut off the electricity supply to all the towns in the municipality, save Leandra, at the following times: Monday to Friday: 06:00 to 08:00 and again from 17:00 to 19:30

Saturday and Sunday: 08:30 – 11:00 and again from 15:00 to 17:30. Eskom also indicated that notwithstanding these proposed times, it may upon 15 days’ notice, disconnect electricity entirely and indefinitely should the electricity debt situation not improve. DA councillor Encee van Huyssteen said on 7 March the councillors are not aware of any agreement to prevent the cut offs. He advised residents to stock up and prepare for the power outages.

30 injured in bus crash 30 Sasol employees were injured when a Sasol bus veered off the R50 road near Leandra on Wednesday morning. It appears that, due to heavy mist, the bus ran over a T-junction and ended up in the middle of a field about 60

metres away from the road. Langamed South transported 12 people to the Sasol medical centre, ER24 and the provincial ambulance services each transported 8 patients and a private company took another five patients to the centre. The Highveld Ridge SPCA had a fund raising event at John Dory’s in Secunda Mall on Thursday, 23 February. Here are SPCA chairman, Madder Steyn, and Jenneth Geel (Senior Inspector at the Highveld Ridge SPCA).

Alison shares her story at Prayer day Alison Botha, the woman who was stabbed and left for dead in 1994 outside Port Elizabeth, gave her testimony at the NG Church East on Friday, 3 March when this church celebrated World Prayer Day for Women. Pupils from Hoërskool Oosterland also attended the day and the church was packed. Alison wrote a book called ‘I have Life’ and a movie about her life was also just released. She said the evening when she was raped and left for dead was full of miracles that saved her life. She was 27 when it happened. Alison pulled up in the driveway of her house and was looking for something in her car when a man appeared next to her window with a knife and ordered her to move over to the passenger seat. He started driving and picked up his friend. They took her to a bush at the outskirts of Port Elizabeth. One of the men, Frans du Toit, was 26 at that time and out on parole for raping a pregnant girl and a 19-yearold student. “When they stopped in the bush I knew something was going to happen. “I asked them what now and they said they want to have sex and asked me if I am going to fight. “I have never done a self-defence course so I decided not to fight. “I think all the schools should give selfdefence courses. “I tried to remove my mind from my body while they both raped me. “I remember thinking don’t worry Alison and I believe that was God speaking to me.” She said people should stop allowing others who do not deserve it to have power over you. “Forgiveness is important. “I realised I was letting these men in on my future life if I do not forgive them.” After raping her, Frans started strangling her and she passed out. “There were many miracles that night. “The fact that I passed out and was unconscious during most part was a miracle.” Frans started stabbing Alison in her abdomen and doctors afterwards said they guess she was stabbed about 35 times. “His friend, Theuns then saw my leg twitched and realised I was still alive and took the knife from Frans and cut my throat about 16 times.” Alison heard most of what happened only in court from the two men as she was unconscious while it happened. She described it as a miracle when Theuns cut her throat. “Because I was strangled, I could not breathe, but when Theuns cut my throat, he cut it open and I was able to breathe again. “God used the very evil that was supposed to kill me, to save my life. “Let it be a reminder in your own life, sometimes God uses the horrible things for good and it is not always what we pray for.” After the men left Alison for dead, she saw car lights through the bushes and told herself not to give up. She wrote the names of the men in the sand for in case she died, so that police could know who did this to her. She realised then she was stabbed in her abdomen and took a shirt the men left behind and tied it around her abdomen and started crawling to the road. “My love for myself saved my life

because I knew I was worth getting up for and that I was worth to fight for me. “I remember every time I fell while I was crawling to the road, it was a miracle that I made it to the road.” A car came and a student who was studying to become a vet helped Alison and called the ambulance that took nearly two hours to get there. “Satan really tried to steal my life,” she said. A throat specialist operated on Alison that night and eventually she fully recovered. She now travels all over South Africa and shares her story of hope. - Jana Oosthuizen
