Matric dance fairy tales come true

Give blood this winter

>> Some teens can’t attend their dance due to financial constraints TANIA SANDBERG Tania.Sandberg@media24.com

ANY girls live for their matric dance, that one night when they can live their dreams of being a princess, a night when Cinderella finally gets her way. We all love the story, but in reality many girls in our community never get to live their fantasy. The current economic situation means some parents simply cannot afford it and that's where My Fairy Godmother comes in. My Fairy Godmother (ZA) Toti came into being after a conversation between two girls, who were discussing the upcoming dance, was overheard. One of the teens said she wouldn't be able to go to her matric dance because of financial constraints. Caroline Gaffney Bowker and Amanda Le Roux put their heads together and decided to start My Fairy Godmother (ZA) Toti to help these teens realise their Cinderella dreams, and it's not just for girls, young princes can also apply. No sooner was the Facebook page up and running when offers for assistance started pouring in. “There are so many people in Toti always willing to help, but who are not always sure how. This is your chance, there are so many ways in which you can contribute. “We need donations of dresses, people to do make-up, nail and hair, seamstresses willing to help with adjustments, shoes, clutch bags and jewellery, among other things. We also

need hangers and garment bags," said Gaffney Bowker. She said they plan to extend My Fairy Godmother project and do it every year. “Jeanne Barnard of The Wardrobe Exchange has offered to collect dresses for the project and she is at Venus Gym in Southgate Mall. People can drop items off there for collection by myself or Amanda,” said Gaffney Bowker. “Thus far quite a few awesome

HE Better Together Network hosted its second monthly meeting on 18 May at Khanya Hospice in Umkomaas. The network consists of nonprofit organisations in the surrounding areas of Amanzimtoti, the aim for each NGO is to talk about the work they do, thus creating an awareness of what resources are available and working together for the greater good of the community. Khanya Hospice CEO, Neil McDonald opened the meeting with a word of encouragement from the Bible asking members to be warriors instead of “worriers”. Quoting Matthew 6:27 - Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? Of course not.” McDonald said: “Worry may damage your health, disrupt your productivity, negatively affect the way you treat others and reduce your ability to trust in God. He noted that there is a difference between worry and genuine concern – worry immobilises, but concern moves you to action.” Hospice focuses on providing support and medical assistance to the terminally ill and their families, with health care workers visiting patients at their homes. The organisation is in the throes of starting a health care facility and needs donations in the form of goods-in-kind (anything a
