MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

Reasons why our beaches are in disarray FEVER REPORTER

L

OOKING back at the floods and the heaps of rubbish left on our beaches, Councillor André Beetge said the recent unexpected rainfall and subsequent devastation couldn’t have come at a worse time - amid a municipal election marred by political infighting and intervention into administrative processes in an attempt to enhance the profile of the city’s newly elected leadership. He said while departments remain stretched to the limits to address washed-away roads and embankments, burst water and sewage lines, due to soil movement and blocked drains, eThekwini’s 98km of beaches, stretching across four municipal districts from north of Scottburgh to south of Ballito only have one serviceable 4x4 vehicle available for beach-cleaning operations among them. “Granted the rain, and the extent

Update on railway restoration TANIA SANDBERG FOLLOWING the disintegration of the railway line and its support structure in Bernadotte Street, train services between Umbogintwini and Winklespruit remain suspended. Metrorail has put measures in place to assist passengers, while repair operations are under way. Zama Nomnganga, KZN Metrorail HOD, marketing and communications said Amanzimtoti station and environs were badly affected by the overflowing stream adjacent to the railway line that feeds into Toti Lagoon. The line between Pahla (opposite the high school) and Toti was severely damaged and will require extensive repairs. The damage is such that trains, goods and passengers cannot traverse the section. “Our engineers are looking at the damages and how to go about fixing the situation,” he added. As part of a temporary measure, a bus service now runs from Umbogintwini to Winklespruit. “Commuters will use their train tickets to travel on the buses, which are provided for the exclusive use of Metrorail passengers. No one will be permitted onto the bus unless they are in possession of a Metrorail ticket,” Nomnganga explained. “Metrorail staff are positioned at the affected areas and will assist passengers as to which bus services to use. Passengers congregate in the parking lot on the seaside of the station and

again, station staff and Metrorail inspectors will be on site to assist commuters. It must be noted that transfers from rail to road are known by most commuters,” he added. He said while all efforts are made to run these services as per the current schedule, it is difficult to avoid delays as a result of the multiple transfers from rail to road and road to rail. Nomganga said it will take about three months to restore the service to Pahla station. He said their normal security component is present at all stations. Referring to the connecting trains between Reunion, Rossburgh and Durban for people who live in Toti, but work in Bluff and Pinetown, Nomganga said the train service on all other corridors has not changed and connecting trains are still operational. The public can call the toll-free line 0800 33 6868 with queries.

Beetge said they had also previously revealed that various capital expenditures and projects had been put on hold until after the elections, thus affording the newly elected leadership to expend the budget in accordance with their decisions as opposed to implementing decisions from the previous council. “While the beach cleaning teams, with the wonderful and much appreciated assistance of the community, continue to clean the beaches manually, we still await response from the city manager regarding the hiring of 4x4 vehicles as those allocated to, but also used by Aquatic Safety to cargo bags and debris that continue to arrive on a southern current off the beaches, are during the mini-holiday period rather prioritised towards life saving activities,” he added. HE ANC was left bruised nationally and the DA energised, while the EFF emerged as kingmakers following one of the most hotlycontested elections in post-democratic South Africa. Support for the ruling party fell to below 60% of the votes for the first time since 1994, who only won outright majorities in Buffalo City, Mangaung, and eThekwini. Despite many of its members breaking away and standing as independent candidates, the ANC managed to fend off competition from the opposition and hold on to eThekwini and Msunduzi. Provisional results show the party managed to retain the only metro in the province, eThekwini, by 56,01%. Just over 26% of the votes went to the DA, the blue party giving the ANC a run for its money in other metros across the country.

Toti remains DA constituency The IFP took 4,2%, EFF 3,4% and AIC 1,37%, whereas the other small parties got less than a percent. As many as 57 independent candidates, believed to be aggrieved by the ANC nomination process, had registered as independent candidates. Fault lines within the ruling party in eThekwini grew prior to and post the ANC eThekwini regional conference where mayor elect Zandile Gumede defeated outgoing mayor James Nxumalo to the position of regional chairperson. The failure of any single party to break the 50% mark meant coalitions would be the order of the day for the next five years. Locally the DA remained the party

of choice. Speaking about the changes nationally DA councillor Andre Beetge said: “There remains a minute minority who still believe politics, religion and business should not be discussed in the same conversation. “The reality remains that children at primary-school level are already prepared to pin their colours to the mast - and then not necessarily in agreement with their parents - which in turn speaks volumes for their observance and the angle of awareness created by the different political entities.” He said as the political playing fields seem leveled in various parts of the country that includes a power shift

Former Kingsburgh mayor remembered FEVER REPORTER ON Friday, 5 August, a memorial service was held for Rona Robinson at St Winifreds Methodist Church in Warner Beach. Robinson, a former mayor of Kingsburgh, is remembered for her valuable contribution to the community. “We are grateful for all the memories we have of you and we will hold it in esteem. Your place will be empty, but we submit ourselves to the Will of God and call out together with the faithful Job: ‘The Lord gave, the Lord took, praise the Name of the Lord.’ Rona will be sadly missed by her children, grandchildren, family and many friends,” stated the order of service. “It was with great sadness that we at Kingsburgh Child and Family Welfare learnt of the death of Rona. She was a staunch supporter of Kingsburgh Child and Family Welfare being a past committee member and vice-chairlady. “Rona was always precise in everything she did for our community, always so efficient and did her homework on any subject she tackled. As a past mayor of Kingsburgh she will be fondly remembered as someone who got the job done, even in adversity. Kingsburgh Child and Family welfare will fondly remember Rona as a lovely lady,” Jenny Smith, chairperson said.

AWYER Yolandi van der Watt is living a full life and appreciating her new lease on life as she recovers from the shooting on 15 February that shocked the community. Van der Watt is known for fighting for the rights of abused women and was handling the divorce case of Belinda Els. On that fateful day, Els’s enraged ex-husband shot his brother-inlaw, Richard Northmore, seriously wounding Yolandi, firing shots into her neck and skull at point-blank range and killed Yolandi’s father Butch, Belinda, and finally himself. “The Amanzimtoti community has been great to me and my family, there has been such an outreach to us. I want to take the opportunity to thank them for the kindness they have shown us. There has also been a lot of conflicting information released in media after the shooting and I want to clarify things and many people don’t know what happened after the incident,” Yolandi explained. “I have had an odd sense of calm since the incident. It was traumatic, my father was my best friend and I lost him. But I am so grateful to be alive and I get to see my children every day. “We would like to thank the whole community, my brother Lourens and his wife Fiona van der Watt, my daughter’s godparents, who took control and assisted, and our family from Newcastle. I had metal plates inserted and one plate caused an infection and had to be removed and closed with plastic.” David takes over: “Yolandi was shot on the Monday and I told her on Saturday morning that her dad had been killed in the shooting. She asked me what happened and I had decided when she asked the question that I would tell her. She started crying. “When I told her earlier that week she had been shot, she got very upset, so from then on I referred to the incident as an ‘accident’. “I am my father’s daughter,” Yolandi said. “Two days after being released from hospital, I had my first client meeting. I am still using a wheelchair. “The bullets are very close to my spinal cord and I still have loss of feeling in my legs. I have a stiff walk and suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder and get overwhelmed by noise - I use the wheelchair in crowded areas so that I don’t fall or have a panic attack,” Yolandi said. Yolandi believes she was spared for a reason. She does a lot of pro bono divorces and domestic violence cases and said that is not going to change, even given the circumstances. She aims to focus on creating new laws regarding the Protection Order process - changing the law so that the process cannot be abused - and to ensure the law is being enforced.

Snow hunting, and crab curry >> Chef shares his mom’s recipe

G

ROWING up in humid Durban, “winter” was always an unusual phenomenon. Our 15°C winters were nothing in comparison to our northern hemisphere counterparts, but just in case we were always prepared. Always prepared with warm soups and curries, but this winter, however, I have to admit, is slightly more than I expected for Durban. Snow on the berg and icy mornings signaled one thing … a hot Durban crab curry. A quick visit to the KZN Midlands to catch a glimpse of the snow and maybe build a snowman seemed like a good idea, but then so did everyone else in Grab curry Cleaning the crab Like all shellfish they must be cleaned well. Start with disjointing the legs – remove the centre shell and devein – wash thoroughly. I also crack the shell on the legs so that the juices cook into the meat.

Ingredients • 3kg crab orange crab bought from my supermarket • half a cup vegetable oil – ghee and/or clarified butter works if you have some • 8 large tomatoes, diced with skin on (canned tomatoes will suffice) • 2 large onions, thinly sliced

• 2 tablespoons crushed ginger and gar lic • 4 large tablespoons masala and chilli powder to taste • 1 teaspoon: turmeric, black pepper, co riander powder and cumin • 5 curry leaves, 2 bay leaves and hand ful of fresh coriander

• 1 aniseed and clove • salt Method Add oil and onions to hot large pot. Cook onions until brown. Add dry spi ces, curry and bay leaves. Stir for 34 minutes until the heat releases the fla vours. Add aniseed, clove and toma

KZN. I was cold and tired, not so much because of snow hunting or snowman building, rather because of the slow moving traffic. So without too much fuss we turned around and headed back home and the one thing I was able to do was get home without traffic and cook a crab curry perfectly suited for the weather. Cooking a crab curry is easier than one would expect and yields a delicious winter treat and it’s quick and hearty my two favourite ingredients. This is my mom’s recipe we have making for many years and its usually paired with rice, but I find it much better to pair with crusty buns. toes. Add a cup of water and put the lid on. Cook for about 20 minutes until the tomatoes have melted into a rich gravy. Add your crab – cover with an other cup of water and cook for an ad ditional 30 minutes on high heat. Add fresh coriander and salt and serve pip ing hot with your crusty buns. Enjoy.

HEALTH and fitness expert, Aileen Swanepoel, launched her new fitness programme “Transform your mind, transform your body” this month. It is a series of exercises based on Combat Coaching’s “Warrior Fitness Programme” and involves functional fitness training. “Transformation starts in the mind. There are three concepts we work on - join the resistance, revolution and evolution. The first concept refers to resisting against things that lead to an unhealthy lifestyle, like resisting diabetes and heart disease. “Revolution is a dramatic or drastic change that leads to your personal revolution, such as starting in your kitchen and throwing out all the junk food and replacing it with healthy food. “Lastly, evolution and no, I don’t believe my granddad was a monkey, growth and evolution is a gradual change from the old lifestyle to the new, the old body, to the new,” Swanepoel said. She added it is necessary to take measurements because you can’t manage what you don’t measure. “Although the Banting diet has proven to show results, it is still not a sustainable diet and one can’t make a lifestyle change. Everybody is unique and who you are counts and what your body can handle.” Each participant is given a nutritional booklet, with their nutritional needs. “It does not matter how fat or thin or tall or short you are, it is what is needed to bring you to your optimal health. From there we build on your individual goal,” she said. “The booklet includes 20 Warrior super foods, which forms the basis from what you should always have in your kitchen. What you have in your fridge is what you will eat when you feel peckish,” she added. “You should treat your body like a super car. If you have a super car, you will take care what kind of fuel you use and where and how you service it. I am not against any diet, all food is good for you. “God did not create any bad vegetables and fruits, etc. For instance do not cut out potatoes in favour of sweet potatoes. Potatoes have a certain hormone and nutritional values that a sweet potato does not have. You do need carbohydrates, but in the right quantities, prepared in the right way,” Swanepoel explained. The programme consists of six fitness classes a week - Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 5am to 6am, and on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6.30pm to 7.30pm and on Saturdays from 9.30am to 10.30am. “We have had a great response, so far 36 people have signed up and those willing to join this week can still do so. Later on it will be a bit difficult,” Swanepoel said.

PREPARING for your matric exams requires some foreplanning and practice. Of all the things you can do to get ready for your final exam, practising matric past papers is the best way to get good results. There are matric papers dating back to 2008 providing enough scenarios for you to go through to prepare. This method will increase your confidence and if repeated often is a surefire way of guaranteeing success. How to prepare for matric finals using past papers • Visit any Rosebank College campus li brary in South Africa from June 24 until Sep tember 30. All you need to do is inform the reception desk on campus and request the subject papers you would like to refer to. Pu pils who make use of this service are also able

to study in our libraries. We have all the sub ject papers available. • Set aside three hours to do one paper over the weekend, time yourself and mark your script to see how much you know. • Compare your answers closely to the memo. If you can clearly see where you have gone wrong, well done, but if not you need to go through it until you understand. • Repeat this process until you write your final matric paper. Using past matric papers to prepare can not be overstated. Doing this allows you to establish which parts of your work you al ready know and which parts you need to fo cus on for more understanding. Past matric papers also help you organise your time bet ter to determine how much time to allocate

to sections. Using past papers to study keeps revision focused on important themes while at the same time practising examstyle questions. These are some of the most helpful tools available to prepare for both internal and ex ternal examinations as they provide pupils with practical insight into how the forthcom ing exam paper is likely to look and the key themes or subject areas most likely to be cov ered. The benefits of studying past exam papers • Helps you gauge likely exam length. • Establishes number of choices provided. • Shows typical number of questions. • Assists with practice of exam tech niques. — Supplied.

veloping new technologies and products that enhance driving safety,” says Neil Langner, marketing manager for Continen tal Tyre South Africa. “This is driven by Continental’s Vision Zero strategy, which aims to reduce and ulti mately eliminate road traffic collisions, in juries and fatalities.” Vision Zero is a comprehensive ap proach towards road safety, combining Continental’s classleading tyres, the ad vanced automotive systems produced by the company such as latestgeneration ABS brakes and electronic stability control (ESC), and the development of networked

communication systems that allow vehi cles to interact with the surrounding traffic. Continental has officially commenced series production of its MK C1 Integrated Braking System (IBS) for the allnew Alfa Romeo Giulia. The electronic brake system is more dynamic, lighter and more compact than conventional brake systems. It also re duces pedal vibrations and delivers the same force characteristics through the ped al at all times, thereby giving the driver greater control and comfort. With the MK C1, the brake actuation fea ture, the brake booster and the control sys tems (ABS and ESC) are combined into a compact, weightsaving module that is up to 4 kg lighter than a conventional system. The electrohydraulic MK C1 is able to build up brake pressure significantly faster than a standard hydraulic system, thereby fulfilling the increased pressure dynamics requirements for new advanced driver as sistance systems in order to prevent acci dents and protect pedestrians. In addition, the system can fulfil the re quirements of an energysaving recupera tive braking system without any additional measures. It thus makes a major contribu tion to safe and dynamic driving, as well as energy efficiency. On the tyre front, Continental has just launched the new gold standard for ultra high performance tyres in South Africa in the form of the SportContact 6. The SportContact 6 relies on Continen tal’s latest generation Black Chili tread compound that provides unprecedented levels of micro flexibility to mesh with the structure of the road surface, while fleeting atomic bonds in the contact patch act like nanoscopic suction pads to ensure high lev els of adhesion. This guarantees optimal grip in all directions when braking, cornering and accelerating on both wet and dry roads. Force Vectoring technology is employed in the tread design to deliver maximum transmission of lateral forces. An innova tive, asymmetrical rib edge design makes for greater tyre stability and enables higher cornering forces. Interlinked tread blocks on the outer shoulder and the second row pro vide mutual support during fast cornering to achieve significantly higher lateral forces and greater steering control. Further gains in highspeed stability are made possible with the use of the new Aral on 350 synthetic textile fibre embedded in the tyre beneath the tread. It incorporates two yarns of highstrength aramid twisted together with a yarn of flexible nylon. This endless cap ply acts like an additional steel belt, providing extra stabilisation to help deal with the enormous centrifugal forces that act on the tyre at very high speeds. Supplied

Olympic dream for Durban man >> Mundell aims to bring home the gold for race walking

Mark Mundell aims to bring home the gold from the 2016 Olympics.

FEVER REPORTER

T

HE 2016 Olympics began on Friday - the first Olympic Games held in South America. Marc Mundell (33) has qualified to take part in this most prestigious of sporting events in race walking. Mundell matriculated at Hillcrest High in 2001 as deputy head prefect, and included among his school sporting achievements: representing KZN in cross-country, badminton, softball, hockey, KZN Mynahs Cricket and SA schools in athletics. Although fully involved in other sports whilst at school, Mundell was inspired to enter the world of race-walking, by his father (Ollie Mundell - a teacher at Hillcrest High), an international race walker. At the age of 12 Mundell first represented KZN in race-walking at the U17 SA champs, and has taken part in them for the past 21 years. Although race walking never held the same veneration as playing 1st rugby did at high school (where he was also 1st XV vice captain), he persisted,

realising that with race walking, he could make it all the way to the top. Mundell selected the 50km event to specialise in (like his dad) and felt that a lack of pure talent, could be compensated for by really hard training and persistence. And he certainly is a young man of hard-work and persistence. Training consists of walks 12 times per week, with a morning session (starting predawn at 4.30am) of some 10-15kms, and speed sessions in the evening, all adding up to a whopping 140-150km a week. In addition, he does four gym sessions per week. Most of this is done alone, the heart rate monitor and stopwatch being his only company. It is this kind of focus that has helped this incredible young man to get all the way to the top. Mundell realised he could set his sights on the Olympics during the SA Schools meeting in 2000 in Sydney (where they hosted the Olympics that year). This then became his dream goal. After much hard work and persist-

ence, it finally paid off and he was selected to participate in the 2012 Olympics. However, a few days before the London Olympics, Mundell aggravated a previously badly injured knee and was instructed by the team doctor not to race. Not to be stripped of his dream, he raced anyway, and set a new Africa record for the 50km. After London, Mundell had to have his knee operated on and it took a full year to get back to full strength again. He then competed at the World Athletics Champs in Moscow in 2013 as well as Beijing in 2015 (as team captain). He then qualified four times for Rio in the past year setting another new African record. As further show of his incredible commitment and to give himself the best chance for achieving gold in Rio, he resigned from his job in May 2015 to concentrate on training leading to the four qualifying times. However, as if his previous challenges weren’t enough, in May this year Mundell contracted tick bite fever and the Coxsackie virus infection, and was hardly able to even move around the house. He had to withdraw from the Racewalk World Cup, where his recent times would have potentially placed him in the top six finishers. After hospitalisation, strong medicine and a diet of fruit and raw vegetable juices three times a day, he recovered and was able to resume training after a month, build himself up and be ready for the 50k in Rio on 19 August. For those who don’t know much about the sport, Mundell explains what it means to reach the Olympics as a race walker: “When I was selected for London, I was the first male to be selected since 1960 so when I returned, I came back saying that I had now opened the door for others. “I have competed at SA Schools level, SA University, World Racewalk Cup, and World Champs, but this [Olympics]”, he says, “is the ultimate, in terms of achievements. The hype at the games, the scarcity of Olympic opportunities (only held every four years) and the high qualifying standard make the Olympics the goal that all top athletes strive to get to.” Mundell’s message to youth: “Although the goals are high, they can be reached and the pupils at school, and those who have left need to ‘go for gold’ and aim to be selected for Tokyo,” he concluded.

McGregor and Furby set to drive global expansion for Gara THE globally respected, Durbanbased paddle manufacturer Gara Racing Paddles is poised for an exciting international expansion after teaming up with successful local businessman Lee Furby and six-time Marathon World Champion Hank McGregor. Based outside Hillcrest, the specialist canoeing paddle manufacturer was an offshoot of the industry leading Kayak Centre, driven by passionate paddler and composite expert Ken Holden. Gara’s range of GP paddles has quickly developed a following in many major canoeing countries worldwide and, seeking to expand their global footprint, Ken and his wife, Sharon, have joined forces with Furby and South Africa’s most successful paddler ever and long-time Gara ambassador McGregor. “We’ve developed an incredibly strong following locally, with most of the country’s top paddlers using our product,” says Holden. “Now we’re very excited to look to expand our following abroad, particularly in the marathon and sprint markets,” he adds. With Furby’s assumption of responsibility of Gara’s business and financial matters and McGregor’s focus on the brand’s promotion and sales, Holden is now afforded the opportunity to channel his wealth of manufacturing and development experience into the business while Sharon handles the business’ daily operations. “Lee is an incredibly successful businessman while you simply cannot put a price tag on Hank’s reputation as an athlete and the unbelievable experience he has built up throughout his illustrious career. “Their involvement, together with me now being able to focus purely on what I’m good at – the development and manufacturing side of things – while Sharon continues to handle the day-to-day operations, is really going to make a massive difference in our ability to stay ahead of every-

one else in the market throughout the world,” says Holden. The quartet’s long-standing relationships also played a major role in the emergence of the new partnership, something all four continue to place great emphasis on as they start this new venture together. “Hank and I have been mates for years, we live 500 metres away from each other as the crow flies, we train and travel together and our wives even run together,” says Furby. “So going into business with one another just seemed like a logical extension of all that and it’s great to have the chance to work on something together that we’re both passionate about. “When I started paddling five years ago, the first paddle I ever bought was a Gara and since then I’ve become one of their most regular customers and have got to know Ken and Sharon very well,” he adds. McGregor echoes Furby’s sentiments. “I’ve been involved with Gara from the beginning and it’s great to now take my racing relationship with them and expand it into a business venture.” “This is something new for me but it is great to be involved in something like this with like-minded people who are also really good friends of mine. “We’ve all got our various strengths that we bring to the table and together I think we form a really solid team.” While Gara will continue to service the local market as well as it has since its emergence on the South African paddling scene, the development of new products is also on the horizon for the new partnership. Gara Racing Paddles celebrate the announcement of their new partnership through their title sponsorship of the upcoming Gara Dolphin Coast Challenge – a two day surfski race on KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast which takes place on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 August. - Supplied
