MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

However, the one thing that continues to stand undefeated is the spirit of the Upper Highway community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. Building 2014 has been marked by persistent chalStone lenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime

Tourism focus on small business

>> Message to indaba guests was that South Africa was safe to visit

I

NDABA 2016 was opened by the minister of tourism cutting the ribbon in a cere- mony with a message to tourists that South Africa is a safe destination to visit, with the relaxation on unabridged birth certificates. “This was said to capitalise on a weakened rand for a great value-for-money holiday,” said Kim McCarthy of Sapphire Coast Tourism. “In keeping with the indaba theme of highlighting small businesses, Sapphire Coast Tourism elected to promote our Aliwal Shoal Reef and the diving fraternity in Umkomaas. At present, the market attracts some 45 000 divers annually,” McCarthy said. She said in addition, young enterprising businesses such as Mnini Dam Conferencing, KZN Shuttle and Tours and Gary's Horseriding, were elected for mentorship at the indaba which offered opportunity to network with more than 1 000 international tour operators. HORROR accident on Mother’s Day ON Sunday at 10.11am Netcare 911 paramedics responded to an accident on the N2 south before the Umgababa off-ramp. Reports from the scene indicate that the vehicle was travelling from Umkomaas towards Amanzimtoti when it veered across the centre median in the heavy rain and crashed into a bakkie on the south-bound lane. “Paramedics arrived at the scene and found that the car with an elderly couple had hurtled across the south-bound lane when they were struck on the side by the bakkie. The twisted frames came to rest across the slow lane with accident debris scattered over a large area, two people will still trapped in the twisted metal of the car,” said Chris Botha, media liaison officer - Netcare 911. After examining the injured it was found that the elderly female, a passenger, had died on impact. Her husband a man estimated to be in his late sixties suffered life-threatening injuries while the driver of the bakkie was in a serious condition. “Firefighters from the Amanzimtoti brigade used the jaws of life to first remove the doors and side of the vehicle to allow medics access to stabilise the patient before they removed the roof. After medics immobilised the critically wounded man they removed him from the wreckage and transported him to a specialised hospital in Durban. The other patient was treated by a private service, then transported to a hospital in Amanzimtoti,” said Botha. - Supplied.

Crime wrap Firearms seized in provincial operations KWAZULU-NATAL police, including the provincial task team, the National Intervention Unit, K9 units, crime prevention and Public Order Police conducted operations from 1 May to the early hours of 7 May, aimed at arresting wanted criminals, seizing unlicensed firearms in the province. Operations were conducted in most areas in the province. A total of 36 suspects were arrested and charged for possession of firearms and ammunition. A total of 37 firearms were recovered and seized which included 31 handguns, five homemade firearms and one shotgun and 114 rounds of ammunition. All suspects appeared in different courts within the province. Recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to establish if they were used in any other crimes in the province. City on the alert following heavy floods SEVERAL areas in eThekwini Municipality have been hit by heavy floods following torrential rains that fell in the past 48 hours. The weather office reported 126mm of rainfall in the Durban south and central, 92.8mm in Virginia between 8pm Saturday and 8am on Sunday. eThekwini emergency services had received 76 calls by 2pm on Sunday, 9 May, and the fire department had responded to all the reports. A number of families in informal settlements of Umlazi and a transit camp in Isipingo had to evacuate as they feared a nearby river that had burst its banks. Emergency teams are on the ground assessing the situation to determine assistance that is required. Further reports can be made to this emergency services number 031 361 0000. Water restrictors not for sale THE eThekwini Municipality is installing water restrictors to over 500 000 households in the city to save water. Water pressure will be reduced after the installation of water restrictors. It has come to the city’s attention that there are individuals who are charging home owners to install water restrictors. The installation is free and the restrictors are not for sale. This is one of the city’s interventions to combat drought. Residents should note that municipal officials and contracted companies installing restrictors will not go inside houses, however, they will be installing these at a water meter outside the house. If anyone poses as a municipal employee and demands payment for the installation, they should immediately be reported at the nearest police station. - Supplied.

MOBILISING the community >> ‘What Nissan is doing is amazing’ FEVER REPORTER

M

OTOR dealership, Mark White Nissan is still in pursuit of mobilising the community. The dealership has donated another wheelchair in its “Change Your Wheels, Change a Life” campaign. This month’s happy recipient is Jan de Jongh, who was nominated by his daughter, Rina Nel, after being referred to the dealership by Helpende Hand. “My dad [69] had a stroke 10 weeks ago on his left side and four weeks later he needed an emergency operation to save his right leg. During the operation they had to remove his muscles and tendons and this has caused him to have a foot that hangs. He will be using a back slab to keep his foot straight. “With the combined effects of the stroke affecting his left side and the operation affecting his right side he has a long road ahead to enable him to walk with a walker. A wheelchair will help him to be mobile,” Jan’s daughter Rina said. Thanking the dealership, Rina said: “What Nissan is doing is amazing, you don’t know what it means to us for my dad to have a wheelchair, he is now more mobile and my mother is free to do more around the house.

NGO needs volunteers

THE Amanzimtoti Trauma Unit (ATU) is an NGO that assists abused women and provides counselling for traumatised victims. It is looking for volunteers for crisis debriefing.

The volunteers will be responsible for reducing anxiety of people at the incident and/or accident scene and referring the victims to the ATU. The candidate must be able to communicate fluently in Zulu or English

Please thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts.” For every car sold, Mark White Nissan donates a percentage of the profit towards the wheelchair campaign. To date mostly manual powered wheelchairs have been donated through the campaign, but Mark White Nissan is hoping for a miracle which will enable them to donate at least three electrical wheelchairs for Durban’s Open Air School. The dealership started campaigning for this in November and is looking for sponsors or donors to partner with them. Music ‘REMEDY’ for the soul >> ‘Goal is to take over the world’

H

AVING performed at East Coast Radio’s Mother’s Day Concert at Suncoast Casino in Durban over the weekend, Toti band, The Remedy Project is set to make waves nationally and internationally. The band, a melodic pop rock outfit was formed about a year ago and consists of Sheldon De St Pern, (lead singer, song writer, vocalist) Greg “Axe Man” Van Vuuren (lead guitar) and twins, Barry (bass guitar) and Ryan De Beer (drums). “Our goal is to take over the world - the sky is the limit for us. We have the Kuswag Karnaval and White Mountain Festival coming up and we want to be booked for more festivals, eventually aiming towards shows in, among others, Europe, the States and Asia,” said band leader, De St Pern. For the past 10 months, the band have been “pretty much underground” practising to get the music tight, up to scratch and solid, “crafting” and working on the continual evolution of their pop-rock sound. Talking about musical influences members agree they always take something from what they have learnt

or from bands they aspire to be like, but say they have their own signature sound. “The songs are a mixture of songs about life, people, about circumstances, relationships, your standard stuff, as a band, we are pretty real guys. We want to keep it real, we are a positive bunch of lads and we are keeping it positive. “We are all driven to hit it right to the top, and are very relentless like that, plus we’ve set a high standard for that. It is just a matter of working hard and using what we have. Perseverance and hard work and positivity, that’s what we put in our songs,” De St Pern said. The record industry today in their opinion is not well. “There are too many people getting sold out. Have you noticed a lot of people becoming more independent now.” While they agree that social media has certain benefits for promoting a band, and selling music online, they are still “all about the live show, selling their CDs at the show and maintaining the same standard on stage as in the studio”.

PHOTO: JOHANN VAN DALEN

De St Pern said they are writing new songs, but do not want to reveal too much at this stage. When they are not practicing and preparing to take over the world, they are just “regular guys”. “If I had a show the day before I will try to sleep in the next day. If not, I’ll get up, have five to six cups of coffee, get some breakfast, plan my day and run errands. “I am pretty much an errand guy in the week, there is nothing rock star about it, but it is real, there are no facades,” he said. “Unfortunately, the remaining three of us work regular nine to five jobs. I wake up early, make food, go to work and then to gym if there is no band practice, rush home and cook my favourite meal. I keep it simple some meat and vegetables for dinner mostly,”

said Barry. “Like my brother, I wake up between 5.30am and 5.45am, get my stuff ready for work, go to work, have a semi-stressful day, band practice or gym, that is pretty much it,” Ryan said. Van Vuuren laughed: “I am more of a night owl, I feel there is not enough hours in a day so I wake up early and go to bed late, burning candle at both ends. Otherwise I follow pretty much the same routine.” It is all pretty much routine for now, but word has it The Remedy Project is

WINTER ARRIVALS

THE BUCKET LIST RECENTLY I watched a movie that knocked off my warm and comfortable socks, made me put on my rainbow- coloured stiletto heels (only) and jump. The movie was about a middle-aged sales lady (aspiring chef), who had discovered she had a brain tumour and had a few weeks to live. She quit her job and was determined to live her bucket list. Having rid herself of everything, including her thoughts, she bought a plane ticket to her dream destination, jetted off and in the midst of enjoying her last days the opportunity to become a chef presented itself. It was unexpected as her intention was to make the most of every minute, but instead she delved deeper into her bucket list than what she had expected. How did she achieve her goals in such a short space of time without having the intention, and why had she not been given that opportunity sooner in life? The answer is a simple, she let go. She let go of her thoughts, her belongings and the people in her life to make space for the new. Most times we have the answer to changing our lives and living a life of fulfillment, but we become so consumed in making the change tomorrow, in living our dreams

tomorrow that we miss the value of the current moment. The change we need to make begins with right now. Taking a leap into the unknown is frightening and uncomfortable. It may or may not be worth it, but in order to receive something you have never had, you have to do what you have never done. It is a lifestyle of give and take not a lifestyle of give and keep. We then find ourselves sitting in a haze with our goals and ambitions fading away like the stars before dawn. Purge yourself of everything unnecessary and anything or anyone you feel will be holding you back. Give yourself a fresh start. Have the universe on speed-dial, order a bucket of happiness, a salad of fun - whatever you desire - and then the next step is to be ready to receive your delivery. Believe you deserve it and the universe will serve it. Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. - Andrisha Chartagoon About the author At the time of writing this Andrisha Chartagoon worked as an intern at Charles Merrington Executive Financial Services (Pty) Ltd. Art association develops fine art T

HE Upper South Coast Art Association (USCAA) was formed in Amanzimtoti in 1983 by Connie Hetherington and Hendriette Wolmarans. Since then the association has been instrumental in developing fine art in our region and has over 50 members. “Many of the artists have grown from beginners to internationally acclaimed artists over the years. Every month, a free drawing class is offered to the public to encourage them to interact and learn from more experienced artists in a relaxed and supportive environment,”

said chairperson, Patricia McCann. USCAA is fortunate to be able to exhibit their artwork at shopping malls and venues around Amanzimtoti when members’ work is exhibited and offered for sale. A percentage of sales can thus be donated to support local charities. Each month a visiting artist is invited to demonstrate in oils, water colour, pastels or whatever their preferred medium is. The public is invited to join for tea and the demonstration. There are also four workshops per year for members and

are always in great demand. “The different theme competitions encourage member artists to develop new techniques and explore every medium in fine art. The competition points that are allocated are tallied up at year-end and trophies are awarded for different aspects of assistance to the club,” McCann said. “The Facebook page - Upper South Coast Art Association - is constantly updated with the latest happenings. The community is invited to join us and to develop their creative talents,” she added. - Supplied.

Toti WI invites you THE “Toti WI” as it is fondly called, is part of an international association called Associated Country Women of the World and forms part of the Federation of Women’s Institutes, which is represented in the United Nations. This movement has been going since the early 1900s and is as popular today as before. The group meets on the second Tuesday morning of every month, the aim of which is to extend fellowship to new and existing members. “There are plenty of ways in which the members can fulfill vital roles for the institute. There are six categories of theme competitions such as adult education, agriculture, floral, cookery, craft and handicraft. The aim is to introduce and improve skills in all these spheres so members can challenge themselves and grow in confidence,” said WI president, Yvonne Dixie. “Competition entries are always varied

and really well supported. The Royal Show and congress also encourage members to excel and enter these competitions. A few minutes of light entertainment is enjoyed just before tea with sweets and savouries are served and the judges can educate the competitors on their entries. Points are allocated for every entry and there are trophies handed out at the annual prize giving,” she said. WI supports charities, including Evelyn House (a retirement home) and other charities around town. There is always an educational speaker or demonstration offered at each meeting. Toti WI is always keen to invite new visitors to their meetings so everyone is welcome to join. For further information, contact Dixie on 031 903 1942. - Supplied.
