MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the
extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Wet weekend carnage FEVER REPORTER
T
HE wet weekend caused carnage around the city in a number of crashes which resulted in tragedy. One person was killed after being thrown out of his vehicle in Amanzimtoti on Saturday 17 September. Netcare 911 paramedics responded to the collision on the N2 North, just before the Doonside Road off-ramp, at about 1.45pm. Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said that reports indicate that the vehicle was travelling south when the driver veered off the road in the wet weather, hurtled across the centre median and overturned several times. “Paramedics arrived at the scene and found that the male driver had been ejected out of the bakkie and thrown for about 50 metres. His critically wounded body came to rest in the north-bound lane. “Paramedics raced to his assistance but found he had died before our arrival due to the extensive injuries he sustained,” said Botha. The twisted frame of the bakkie was found in the bush about 200 me-
tres from the point of impact. The matter is being investigated by police. In a separate incident also on Saturday afternoon Netcare 911 paramedics responded to a collision along the N2 north between Doonside and Adams Road off-ramp. A bread delivery vehicle had veered across the road in the rain and overturned as well. Fortunately, paramedics confirmed that the driver, who was found in the truck lying on its side, sustained minor injuries. Another driver veered off the waterlogged N2 in Amanzimtoti on Saturday at 2pm. The vehicle eventually plunged into a river several metres below the N2. “Paramedics and firefighters arrived at the scene and found that the driver had been rushed to hospital by private transport before our arrival. The twisted frame of the vehicle was found partly submerged in the river,” said Botha. A women was killed in the fourth incident on Saturday afternoon on the N2 north of the Amanzimtoti river bridge.

while the driver escaped with minor injuries. Paramedics worked hand in hand to try to resuscitate the female, but despite their efforts she was declared dead soon after arriving at hospital,” said Botha.
Robber arrested in Impala Park
Work creation project goes digital THE Durban South Opportunity Centre, creating employment opportunities in our area, has moved into the digital realm and its website is up and running. The centre’s spokesperson, Lee Lewis said the container, which was placed at Amcup in Illovo for job seekers to register, is closed at the moment, as the location seemed impractical. However, it will now be much easier to find workers online because there are various job categories from which to choose. “Whether you are looking for a general labourer, a chef or caregiver, we have hundreds of applicants on our database. This is a free service we provide for the community by the community,” she said. Visit www.dsoc.co.za to access the website. Employers need to log in to see “job seekers”, after registering once-off. A QUICK-THINKING resident assisted in the arrest of a robber after his home was broken into last week. According to Amanzimtoti SAPS spokesperson Charlene van der Spuy the resident of Impala Park awoke at about 6pm on Wednesday 14 September after he heard a noise at his front door. “When he went to check, the suspect was already inside his house armed with a knife,” said Van der Spuy. The armed suspect had gained entry by forcing the front door open. When the resident saw the suspect reach for his knife, he ran into one of his rooms and locked himself in. “He only came out after the suspect had left. He then called his armed response unit to alert them. “On their arrival he gave them a description
of the suspect. The robber was traced by members of CCPO, ET, Chubb and Metro Police and apprehended in Sugar Road next to the R603,” said Van der Spuy. The man had stolen a flat screen TV, a hard drive and cellphone. All the stolen items was recovered and suspect was handed to the Amanzimtoti SAPS. Police confirmed that the robber had a knife and screwdriver in his possession. The resident also identified the suspect as the same robber who was on his premises the previous day around the same time trying to gain entry at the back door, but he did not succeed. The management of Amanzimtoti SAPS applauds these members for their quick response in apprehending the suspect and recovering the stolen property. Police are investigating. - Supplied.

T
HE Better Together Network met at One Stop Retirement Village on Wednesday, 14 Septem-
ber. “The network was initially started by the founder of Choices for Life (former Pregnancy Resource Centre) and Africa Cares, Gail Shreiner. “So many non-profits do not know what the other does and it is wonderful to have a reference network with nonprofits that renders other services,” Daniele Gradwell, Africa Cares, said. The network was an Africa Cares initiative and Gradwell suggested ideas for future network meetings. The suggestions included inviting guest speakers and focusing on one non-profit organisation at each meeting, and then creating training opportunities for growth. Gradwell said Africa Cares provides counsellor and life-skills training and a programme on how to start an NGO, among other services. The organisation also conducts board training at a nominal rate. Willie Schultz representing Work 4 a Living, suggested that more synergy between non-profits will lead to better funding opportunities. He suggested the network create a shared website and use digital media to spread the message. area. Currently the project provides more than 500 sandwiches to schools, and porridge to two crèches. Also representing at the meeting for the first time, Seed of Hope, Thola Sithebe and Musa Mvula said it is the organisation’s vision to build a thriving community. The organisation focuses on educational programmes for the youth and adults and community care and presents after-school programmes from Monday to Friday. Khanya Hospice CEO, Neil McDonald said the organisation offers free palliative nursing care to patients who are terminally ill and to ensure, should they die, they die in dignity and not alone. Hospice covers the area from the old Durban airport to Hibberdene.
He said often people do not know where to go in a time of crisis, and it is wonderful to have a network where people can be referred to. Choices for Life Centre director, Kellyann Goodwin said the organisation focuses on life-skills training, counselling and support for young people. “It is our aim to change the mindset of the youth to make better life choices.” Representing Turning Point – Amanzimtoti, Pastor Johnny Laidlaw said the organisation counsels those who have been exposed to different forms of crime. He said the organisation has a shortage of counsellors and needs assistance.

Also representing Sweetwater’s Church Laidlaw said it is the church’s vision for the community and everyone to become “a united nation”. Mother of Peace project manager, Deon Ford said the organisation is also in need of counsellors and he will be training to assist. Alan Symons, former pastor of Rehoboth Church (now Lionsgate Church) was called to study anger and stress management five years ago. It is his desire to bring anger and stress under control before people hurt each other. He does counselling using the container at Turning Point – Amanzimtoti. zimtoti Cares, have joined and are succeeding in what they are trying to achieve. SAPS Captain Charlene van der Spuy said the public should make use of the contact number 10111 in case of emergencies. The number is linked to a central call centre where complaints get despatched via radio to the relevant police stations. Complaints are recorded and the reaction time is monitored. The next meeting will be held on 12 October at Mother of Peace at 10am and all non-profit organisations and churches are welcome to attend. LIWAL Shoal Scuba has been running since 1985 and is rated among the top 10 diving spots worldwide. When your adventurous side kicks in, sometimes all you need a little push to join in this amazing experience. You automatically start feeling excited and in many cases it is “fearing the unknown” that holds you back. Learning to scuba dive was nothing I expected and to swim underwater
was incredible. I can understand that some people are nervous because breathing underwater seems unnatural. The team at Aliwal Shoal Scuba were nothing but incredible taking me step by step and guiding me through the Padi Open Water Certification process. Breathing underwater is surprisingly noisy, but as time progressed you start to tune out the bubbling sound of exhalation and listen to the dolphins and whales in their natural environment. One of the best parts of scuba diving is the feeling of weightlessness, it’s like flying or being an astronaut ready to investigate and find either treasure or observe unusual species. You never know what you will see

and buoyancy compensator (BC) support you. Don’t fight the current, enjoy the ride. It is normal to forget hand signals and other instructions, but your instructor is there taking care of you. You are being exposed to a new environment and being a new diver is like discovering a new world. On your first dive your brain works overtime trying to adjust to the new sensations - this is understandable and if something needs to be explained to you again, don’t feel bad. Be patient. Adapt to this new experience and find yourself first because you will enjoy the underwater world once you adapt to the surroundings. It is a delightful and beautiful world down there.

BY Tuesday the craving got me good and I had a hankering for seafood - I wanted something fishy, fresh and possibly right near the ocean. I thought about all the usual suspects along the coast, but wanted something different and not commercial. I needed a seaside, independent owner-run restaurant that anyone from Jozi would kill for. Just a short drive from the city we made our way to Waves Seafood Restaurant in Umkomaas. Their tag line is “life is better at the beach” and I couldn’t agree more. Spring has not been kind to us, so any excuse to lunch near the ocean was in order. After we settled, we met with owners Rudi and Rob who welcomed us with the warmth of regular customers. Their seaside restaurant is right next to the beach and next to a great diving spot. According to Rudi, if you’ve done the dive, you ride the “waves” next door. I didn’t do the dive in these iconic shipwrecked waters, but was about to dive into their seafood platter. Our waitress brought our platter in good time and we dived in. The food was fresh and everything you would expect from a seafood platter - prawns, fish, calamari - the whole shebang. The other thing I loved about Waves is that the menu extends beyond seafood with pub classics, burgers, breakfast, pizza and more. I was also very intrigued to discover they do milkshakes with a “kick”. The best part - the Mozambican beers and that special R&R made with real Mozambican rum. If you are looking for a weekend family outing to keep the children busy at the sea or just riding your bike, do stop by. You won’t be disappointed, tell them Chef Rev sent you. Until then, happy dining. To book, call 039 973 2500.

Audiophiles will appreciate the newly added digital media holder housed in the centre console, which provides secure stor age for portable music devices and easy in terface via the builtin USB, AUX and Blue tooth systems. Following the launch of the fourthgen eration RX SUV earlier this year, the top of the range RX450h SE’s luxury credentials are further bolstered. The specification changes mainly centre on enhanced conve nience. Rear seat passengers will appreciate the addition of electric adjustment for the 2nd
row seats, whilst the inclusion of seat heat ers, now ensures that all occupants are kept warm and toasty. Not to be excluded, the driver now has a Panoramic View Monitor at their disposal (which replaces the previous reverse cam era), offering a wider field of vision, improv ing visibility and enhancing convenience. The Lexus LX has established itself as a formidable Luxury SUV, with demand of ten exceeding supply. Befitting its status, the Lexus SUV flagship inherits a number of safety and technological upgrades. At the forefront of the upgrades, is the addition of a PreCrash electronic safety system. This system scans the road ahead, constantly monitoring vehicle distance and warning the driver of potential obstacles impeding vehicle approach. The system is also capable of taking corrective action, in creasing brake pressure, closing windows and adjusting vehicle dynamics to prevent a collision. Integrated into the PreCrash system is Adaptive Cruise Control, which allows the vehicle to maintain a safe following dis tance – adjusting speed autonomously – to provide peaceofmind cruising. Further convenience is provided by the Lane Keep Assist and new Adaptive High beam System (AHS). AHS automatically alters the field of light provided by the LED headlamps, to shield oncoming vehicles from the highbeam illumination without deactivating the highbeam function. To complement the advanced AHS sys tem, sequential turn signal illumination is included, creating a sophisticated visual ef fect. The Lexus LX is available in two models, the petrol powered LX570 which features a silky smooth 5.7litre V8 (serving up 270 kW and 530 Nm), and turbodiesel powered LX450d which delivers an effortless driving experience with 195 KW and 650 Nm of tractive effort.
