A number of reasons to celebrate
amanzimtoti www.hillcrestfever.co.za
MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the
extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

However, the one thing that continues to stand undefeated is the spirit of the Upper Highway community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.
Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. Kalisha Naicker Senior Journalist Hillcrest Fever

Rotary says thank you THE Rotary club of Amanzimtoti has been serving the community for 51 years. It is a small club with 10 members who are committed to promoting peace at grassroots level by addressing the underly ing causes of conflict and violence such as hunger, poverty disease and illiteracy. “The year 2016 has been a very challeng ing year for our club. We lost our incoming president and past district governor, Chris Skinner. We miss his wisdom and guidance,” said Amanzimtoti Rotary president, Aneska Dupont. 2016 at a glance: Rotary Foundation, the charitable arm of Rotary, celebrated its centennial year and has been named the 2016 Outstanding Foundation by the Association of Fundrais ing Professionals (AFP). “In support of the foundation’s centennial year, our club has doubled our annual giving to the founda tion and to the Global Polio Eradication fund,” Dupont said. She said the club has funded the training in Early Childhood Development (ECD) of two facilitators at Mother of Peace. “The re sults of the skills and knowledge that they

velopment was started this year at MoP. Two facilitators at their care centre were registered to be trained as ECD practition ers. One will qualify with a diploma in Edu care and the other will have an NQF Level 5 qualification at end of next year. The train ing is a twoyear project and R32 000 has already been invested in this project by our club. They have acquired and applied great skills and knowledge,” Dupont stated. She said a grant from Rotary District, a donation from Montessori School and the proceeds of their golf day were used to fund the ECD project. “We are hoping to start with our second ECD project in 2017. The carecentre has 83 children and four caregivers. It is situated in lower Illovo, with very high unemployment rate, so very little income is generated by the carecentre. We would like to repair their old fence, so that we can start a vegetable gar den, and they are in desperate need of a gas stove and fridge as there is no electricity,” Dupont said. She emphasised that the club does not want to make unemployed people depend ant on handouts, but would like to educate and provide skills, so that those they assist can take care of their own families. OLIDAYMAKERS are spoilt for choice when it comes to holiday activities to enjoy. For the adventurous diving with sharks is certainly as adrenalin stimulating as it gets and if further exploring the depths of the sea appeals, diving the nearby Aliwal reef tops the list. Aliwal Shoal Scuba has been running since 1985 and is rated in the top 10 diving spots worldwide. Staying on the beach, the whole family will enjoy the slides at Amanzimtoti’s Main Beach, Splash Waterworld, followed by cocktails at Thirsty Whale. Exploration on land for the adventurous can be done via horse with Gary’s Horses offering exquisite rides along the beach. For 4x4 adventurers, the Nungwane waterfall is a day trip not to be missed. Another exciting day trip must is a visit to Crocworld in Scottburgh.

Sharing Christmas with seafarers CHRISTMAS is a time of celebration when families, loved ones and friends get together. However for so many in our society this is not possible. Amongst those who are often forgotten are the seafarers who are the crews of the many vessels visiting the Port of Durban. They are separated from their families and loved ones thousands of miles away in distant countries. What is ironic is that these seafarers are often on vessels bearing cargo which comprises items for sale as festive season gifts. Fortunately a group of people are involved each year in the Share your Christmas with a Seafarer Project. Members of the various Seafarers’ Missions and chaplains who regularly visit crews on ships in port all join forces and collect and make items which are wrapped and distributed to seafarers on ships in port over Christmas. This project has been running for about 30 years and although it entails a lot of hard work, seafarers who cannot be home during this festive period appreciate the gesture. In addition, schools are also contacted and the teachers arrange for pupils to write short notes which are included in each parcel. Seafarers appreciate these messages written by children as they bring a personal touch to the gifts received. Mittens and beanies are always sought after and enthusiastic knitters, often from various residential homes and ladies’ groups at churches, are busy throughout the year. From donations received, other items are also bought. This year packing and wrapping of the gifts took place at the Seafarers’ Centre in Bayhead and an enthusiastic group of helpers packed some 2 000 parcels. A group of helpers will board a pilot boat from Transnet National Ports Authority to distribute the gifts to vessels in the port on 22 December and at outer anchorage on 23 December. - Supplied.

HE Valley of 1000 Hills attracts thousands of tourists annually and once you catch a glimpse of its splendor, it will come as no surprise. Recently the Phezulu Safari Park hosted a birthday party with a difference on 16 December as a popular resident Cleo turned 21. "Cleo is a beautiful Burmese Python that was born into the park 21 years ago. She weighs 48kg and is just over four metres long. “Burmese Pythons are not indigenous to South Africa, but look very similar to our African Rock pythons. Cleo’s job at the park is the educate people to not just buy any snake as some grow extremely large and can’t be kept for long. “This leads to many being handed into sanctu-
aries such as Phezulu Safari Park or even worse, released into the wild where they will destroy our natural fauna. Cleo is also a friendly snake and assists people to overcome their fear of snakes,” said Tristan Dickerson, Phezulu general manager. “Phezulu Safari Park is a place to come with the children and enjoy the activities we have to offer. Entry includes the view of the Valley of 1000 hills, two restaurants, children’s play area with jumping castle and zip line, two curio shops and a traditional Zulu shield factory.” Activities include reptile park, game drives and Zulu village tours Zulu dance show. - Supplied.

Larger than life Christmas tree A
LARGER than life 12.5m high custommade Christmas tree will be displayed at uShaka for the public to enjoy up until Christmas. The tree, initiated by The Spar Group, has been 100% designed, manufactured and assembled in Durban. The metal-based tree has been designed and assembled by Nevon Singh and his team from Magic Lighting in Montclair, south of Durban, using locally made components and lights. In the region of 74 000 LED bulbs and 2 000 meters of cabling went into the tree. 15 staff spent approx 4 158 labour hours making the custom-made structure and components. “Our idea was to custom-make the newest brightest sparkliest Christmas tree Durban has ever seen,” said Mike Prentice, Spar group marketing director. “We wanted the tree to be 100% made in South Africa and lit by a multitude of LED lights
– all locally designed and manufactured. We want to revisit the nostalgia of Christmas and create a beautiful and iconic statement in a public place which can be enjoyed by both residents and visitors.” The idea was inspired by the vast Christmas decorations in Rockefeller Centre in New York, the gigantic fibre optic tree which adorns Sydney; whimsical decorations in Vienna and oldestyle department store windows. It will look magical – like something straight out of a children’s story book. Displayed alongside the tree will be an array of fantasy sea creatures made by Robin Opperman, Ujala Sewpersad and their team from Umcebo Design. They are making 14 huge mixed media fish, two enormous jelly-fish and five starfish using coke/milk bottles, Bonnox mesh and bottletops. - Supplied.

There has been a lot of maintenance and repairs done at ASC in a continuous effort to ensure the park maintains its standards for sports enthusiasts and the general public. A big thank you to all the volunteers who readily help out where needed and the staff from Parks 5 - without you all, the sports centre would not have the attraction that it does. Keeping the Amanzimtoti Sports Centre clean, safe and secure is an ongoing and daily task and this is by no means an easy one. Various new sign boards have been posted in and around the sports centre please take note of these to ensure that everyone gets to enjoy the park. Some big upgrades /changes this year were: the paving at the entrance to the sports centre has been redone, TUFC clubhouse has been enclosed for security reasons and new signage added, the cricket pitches have been re-done and the cricket nets and the ablutions at the oval refurbished, All this is in preparation for a big year of sport and recreation in 2017. 2017 kicks off with the annual night series school rugby tournament, a new look bowls tournament to encourage new players and the KZN KFC Mini Cricket Festival and another trail run. So watch the press and Amanzimtoti Sports Centre Facebook page for more details. The ASC functions hall is available to use for events and can seat up to 120 people. CAROLYN BORCHARD THE world’s steepest cogwheel railway winds its way up from Alpnachstad to Pilatus Kulm, in Luzern, Switzerland. Mount Pilatus, as it is more commonly known, is geologically the northernmost branch of the Alps and affords its many visitors Swiss scenery at its absolute best. During the summer months, the train chugs uphill at an alarming gradient, covering a height difference of 1635m, through lush meadows carpet-
ed with alpine flowers, past sparkling mountain streams and fascinating rock faces. The views from the top are spectacular – from the snow capped mountains, down the valleys to the lakes and picturesque little villages below. Add a few cow bells and one would be forgiven for believing you were on the set of “Heidi”. This masterpiece of engineering opened in 1889 (steam operation) and again in 1937 after electrification. Mount Pilatus stands at an impressive
2 128m and the track is 4 618m in length. A particularly pleasant option is to ride up and walk down. A well marked mountain-trail winds its way down to the ticket office at the base and affords hikers an entirely different perspective of this magnificent mountain and its equally magnificent surrounds. A trip to Switzerland and specifically the area around Luzern would be incomplete without this once-in-a-lifetime “Swiss chocolate box adventure!”
