MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. 3 As we get ready to wind down and take a breath p/u m er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. New drug targets children

>> Three arrested for possession of ‘jelly babies’

J

ELLY babies – the ultimate, cutest jelly sweet that children’s mouths melt over … Well not anymore, parents need to warn their children to not accept sweets from strangers. Over the weekend of 21 May, police raided premises and arrested three people for possession of the “jelly baby” drugs. The jelly babies are amphetaminebased and include crystal meth, which is the new drug that is hitting Durban targeting young children. Drug dealers are targeting younger clients daily, because they are easy targets and easily drawn due to a lack

of knowledge. The danger of the young taking toxic substances into their bodies is deadly – it can take only one dose to kill them. Their bodies cannot handle drugs the same way an adult can, and the effects are 1000 times worse due to the organs etc., still developing within their bodies. Parents please, we need to be alert, we need to be prepared and we have to educate our children on the dangers of drugs. Against Substance Abuse will be hosting an informational evening soon for all parents to give them the correct knowledge on how to educate

their children and what signs to look for if their child has used drugs or been a victim. If you have any information regarding drug dealing to children, contact us immediately on 073 153 5541.

Robber and rapist convicted A HOUSE robber and rapist will serve a total of 28 years in prison, having been positively linked to a crime via DNA. “During February 2013 around 8pm, the female victim (22) was alone at home with her two year old baby watching television when three African males entered the lounge.

“Two were armed with knives and one with a stick with which they threatened and demanded money and a firearm from her,” said Captain Charlene van der Spuy. “When she responded that she had neither, they tied her hands and feet with strips of material and placed her on the bed. Two of the

suspects brutally raped her, whilst the third suspect searched the house for any valuables. They then took a DVD player and fled the scene on foot,” she said. According to van der Spuy, a case of house robbery and rape was opened and investigated. One of the accused, Sipho Nhlaka Hlophe (31), was later arrested and positively linked to the crime via DNA. The accused appeared in Um-

lazi Regional Court on 6 May, where he was convicted as follows: Count 1: house robbery with intent - 3 years imprisonment, Count 2: rape - 10 years imprisonment and Count 3: Robbery Aggravated - 15 years imprisonment. “The accused will serve a total of 28 years imprisonment. The Management of Amanzimtoti SAPS applauds Detective W/O KD Zungu who secured this successful conviction,” van der Spuy said.

INGSWAY Church International (KCI) has partnered with The Domino Foundation, a non-profit organisation, to initiate a school feeding scheme for vulnerable children on the South Coast. “The idea behind the initiative is to assist children who do not receive a packed lunch and come to school with empty tummies. “We want to focus on good nutrition so that these vulnerable children are able to concentrate in class and learn, as well as have a healthy nutritious lunch,” said Cheryl Dann, a member of Kingsway Church International (KCI) and the Toti kitchen co-ordinator for The Domino Foundation. “One of the key objectives of The Domino Foundation Feeding programme is to enhance learning through meeting children’s physical needs for health and balanced nutrition. “We are excited to partner with Kingsway Church International in the

South Coast area and align our visions through feeding,” said Shaun Tait, The Domino Foundation COO. The church approached local schools and having identified a need, started to make sandwiches at the church office from the beginning of the school term in April. Currently 15 volunteers from KCI are taking turns to make sandwiches each day for two local schools. Through corporate and individual donations, items such as eggs, margarine and bread are donated to The Domino Foundation to use in the Toti feeding kitchen. KCI church members also contribute peanut butter, mayonnaise, apples and yoghurt for the project. One of the schools that receive sandwiches from the scheme also collects peanut butter and mayonnaise to contribute towards the programme. Dann and her team at KCI are hoping to build up and expand their distribution that currently supplies approximately 30 sandwiches to each of the participating schools daily

ITS NEVER TOO EARLY TO PLAN YOUR NEXT CRUISE HOLIDAY

during the week. “We go where a need has been identified and we have been approached by a school in Lower Illovo to supply sandwiches to their 301 matric pupils, who attend extra lessons in the afternoons. “We aim to start supplying sandwiches twice a week,” Dann said. She said the church kitchen will need an upgrade as it is small and would require additional volunteers to make the required amount of sandwiches. Further donations of peanut butter, mayonnaise and margarine are also needed and the community is asked to get involved, which she says, is just the tip of the iceberg. Businesses and individuals who want to assist, must contact Dann at the church office on 031 903 8331 or email feedingtoti@domino.org.za The Domino Foundation offers a range of innovative solutions for meaningful CSI spend and is able to provide all documentation required for B-BBEE and tax exemption purposes.

>> Ripley’s Believe it or Not! from Friday, 3 June to 26 June at the mall “In 1933, Mr Ripley undertook one of his longest trips from Cairo to South Africa. It was a two-month trip, highly publicised, where people flocked to him with their oddities. Ripley’s is looking forward to bringing the brand back to South Africa and its people in the form of a travelling show at South African malls, filled with over 100 oddities from the Ripley collection, including five original pen and ink cartoon panels, drawn by Ripley on location in Africa, in the 1930’s,” said Edward Meyer, vice-president archives and exhibits, Ripley Entertainment Inc. “Imagine Galleria Mall full of oddities, in a uniquely designed display situated throughout the mall, showcasing a first ever in South Africa,” said Galleria Mall GM, Kurt Hoggan. “We are super-excited to host Ripley’s Believe it or Not! from Friday,

3 June – 26 June.” The exhibition is free and open to the public as per the trading hours of the mall. Galleria Mall shoppers and Ripley’s Believe it or Not! enthusiasts can look forward to more than 140 artifacts displayed in distinctively designed themed areas. This thoughtprovoking exhibition not only promises to entertain visitors to Galleria Mall, but allows for interactivity and photo opportunities. The Ripley’s collection The Ripley collection represents over 95 years of collecting by Robert Ripley and his corporate heirs. The foundation of the more than 25 000-piece collection was gathered and assembled by Ripley himself on his many travels around the world, but the Ripley’s Entertainment staff today add new pieces to the collection, almost daily. There are exhibits from the microscopic world, and the worlds of science and computer technologies, plus artifacts that have been flown in space, including flags flown on the moon, and meteorites from Mars. Ripley was intrigued with animal oddities - creatures dealt strange fates by Mother Nature. He called them

“pranks of nature”. The Ripley collection today includes a horse with three legs, twoheaded calves, pigs, rabbits, turtles and kittens. The collection has albinos, giant snakes and alligators, a menagerie of multi-winged and multi-limbed birds, and even a headless chicken. Ripley was also fascinated by people, especially those with extreme cases of human growth. Among Ripley’s exotic treasures are fascinating cultural artifacts acquired in the primitive outposts of civilisation, rare objects like decorated cannibal skulls and shrunken heads. Every Ripley auditorium houses a gallery of fine art, including wall paintings, mosaics and three-dimensional sculptures. At Ripley’s, however, the artist’s medium is often more remarkable than the actual artwork. Many of Ripley’s best artwork has been created from unusual things, including ordinary household objects like popsicle sticks, cigarette wrappers, dog hair, black beans, jelly beans, laundry lint, toast, toothpicks

and match sticks. The collection covers everything from history, to zoology, to geography, art, sports, politics, celebrities, dinosaurs and even outer space. Make a point of visiting Galleria Mall in June, you can’t afford to miss out. - Supplied.

Fever foodies Adventures of ‘Chef Rev’

Chef Rev turns photographer in Zanzibar. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Here’s what you will need to create this food adventure; 30minute East Coast seafood potjie Ingredients: • Butter (of course), butter and more butter • 250ml fresh cream or buttermilk (sour cream works well too) • 1 tablespoon crushed ginger and garlic (the paste tube thingy will work well too) • 1 finely chopped white onion • 1 handfull fresh coriander • 1 clove (Zanzibar’s main spice export, so I’ve been told by the locals) • A few drops of lemon juice • 250ml white wine, plus 1 for drinking while you make it • 1kg prawns (cleaned) • 1kg mussels (the ones with the shells work best – keep the children busy by getting them to scrub the shells) • 2 fish fillets (hake is the easiest) • 200g calamari rings or tubes • Salt and pepper Method: Dust off your old solid cast iron potjie pot and gooi on a hot braai. Heat butter. Add chopped onion and cook until transparent. Add crushed ginger and garlic. Add cream and wine. Add clove, half coriander and mussels. Let the heat release all the flavours. Cook for 5 minutes. Add calamari and prawns. Cook for a further five minutes. Stir in chunky hake fillets. The sauce should thicken. Salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with the rest of the coriander and voilà done. Best served with potato bake or just good oldfashioned storebought garlic bread.

TYPICAL Durban winter’s day, sunshine and everything “unwinter” you can imagine. Life is too short not to eat real butter I tell myself as I sip-eat my chocolate brownie cake-tini - a chocolate brownie served in a martini glass covered in chocolate ganache with ice cream, and pen my first lifestyle piece in the sun. My name is Chef Rev and I’m the new kid on the block. I am a qualified chef and the co-owner of a self-proclaimed uber trendy restaurant in Durban, Pop-up Society. I will also be your personal chef. I started writing because I love cooking, if that makes any sense. When I read recipe books and magazines I often ask myself, how on earth will the mom of two children implement these futuristic recipes in her limited kitchen after working a full day? My goal is simple - to add spice inspirations to your life. I’m simple. To the point. No futuristic garnish. Just inspiration. Food is exciting, playful and fun for the family. I’m not a writer, I am a chef. An artisan of yummy. Excuse the writing, excuse the butter, devour

the adventure. Straight to business, butter and adventure. Welcome to Zanzibar, as is the island on the east coast of Africa - white sand, warm beaches, 50 shades of blue, spice island blah, blah, blah. But as far as I go, food was nothing to write home about. I had two main reasons for visiting this beautiful spice island - one, to usher my sisters 40th and then to sample this centuries-old spice island so I could bring back ideas, recipes and kilograms of spices for my restaurant. I was mistaken. Now maybe it was a thriving spice route, East-meets-West-in -Africa 2 000 years ago, but as I stand today, as a Durbanite, our spices and flavour combinations outweigh this spice island by a mile. This made me realise how lucky we were as a KZN foodie generation. My Zanzibar-Durban experience allowed me to create something wonderful. It’s called “the 30-minute East Coast Seafood Potjie” - a perfect meal for a weekend braai or just as by itself.

SAFETY AND SECURITY

Have an EMERGENCY fire escape plan S

OUTH Africans know that it is important to have security gates on every door and burglar bars on every window in their home to keep intruders out, but when there’s a fire, this precaution can turn your house into a death trap. Make sure you and your family are safe by following these emergency fire-escape safety tips. • Don’t fit fixed burglar bars to every window. Install burglar proofing that can open on at least one window, to use as an escape route. • Select a “safe room” you can use in the event of a crisis. The bathroom is a good option as there is running water, a toilet to use while you’re trapped, and it’s the place where people usually keep vital medicines such as asthma pumps. You can also wet a towel and wrap it around you in the case of fire. Fit burglar proofing that opens the window in this room so

you can get out if necessary. • Store your emergency exit window keys where you can find them quickly. A hook next to the window is a good option. Don’t leave them in the lock because robbers will use them if they break the window. • If you are in a high-rise block or have a double-storey home, fit an emergency exit security gate to a veranda door in addition to those on your windows so you have an alternative escape route. Again, keep spare keys where you can find them easily. If you have a security gate on your front door, keep spare keys on a hook next to the door. • Fit fire alarms in strategic areas around the home as well as panic buttons if you are woken by a fire or robbers. Even if you don’t have armed response, your neighbours will be alerted. • Keep a list of emergency phone

ADVERTORIAL

Avoid being a victim of crime AVOID being a victim of crime - the following advice can be useful: • Most hijackings take place outside your house. People are often followed home from the shops, etc., and when they arrive in their driveway they get swooped upon. • When leaving your home – be aware of what is going on outside your home. Cut vegetation back, add more lightning and install CCTV cameras. • Be careful when drawing money – there have been a huge increase in people being followed from the bank and then robbed on the road. • If you suspect you are followed – call the SAPS or your security service provider while driving to the nearest

police station. • Early warning protection devices go a long way to prevent unwanted guests. These can be linked to your alarm system to give you early warning of an intruder in the yard. • Lighting – it makes a huge difference if you light up your yard. It gives you the element of surprise if you can see potential criminals before they see you. • When out walking – rather walk in a group of people. Walking by yourself or even a couple of people, makes easy targets for would be criminals. • Know your neighbour. In the event of an emergency –

There is a increase in theft of motor vehicles. Be aware of where you park. Install a vehicle tracking device. There are a large number of vehicles on our roads that are not fitted with tracking devices or have insurance. Get fitted, for as little as R99 a month

numbers on your cellphone. Print them out and stick on the wall next to the landline if you have one. • Check systems such as automated doors, panic buttons, sensor beams and smoke alarms regularly to make sure they are working. Also remember: • make sure your family knows where your fire escape is; • it’s essential to have a fire emergency exit escape plan and to practise it with your family; • if there is a fire in your home, get everyone out and stay out. Don’t go back inside; and • in a high-rise building, don’t use the lift as they are not fire proof - rather use the stairs. — Women24.

having neighbourly help at hand makes a difference. • Neighbourhood watch groups are useful for being made aware when there is an incident in your area. • There is a increase in theft of motor vehicles. Be aware of where you park. Install a vehicle tracking device. There are a large number of vehicles on our roads that are not fitted with tracking devices or have insurance.
