A number of reasons to celebrate

This week ONLINE

MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

>> Warning for sea bathers after teen gets into difficulty and drowns in Umdloti ANDILE SITHOLE

T

HE National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has warned swimmers in the north of Durban to swim within the demarcated areas and obey the instructions of lifeguards to avoid tragedy. This comes after a teenager, Rylan Moses from Johannesburg, drowned at Umdloti Beach on 21 August while swimming with a friend. NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon told the Weekly that the sea is at its roughest at spring tide. “We urge bathers to go to beaches where and when lifeguards are on duty and obey the instructions of lifeguards and swim within the safe swimming demarcated zones lifeguards post using their red and yellow flags. “Swimming at beaches that are not protected by lifeguards is prohibited. “We also urge the community to learn as much as they can about rip currents before swimming in the sea,” he said. “Rip currents are a natural phenomenon. “As the water reaches the beach in waves the water returns to the ocean in rip currents. “Rip currents form at different places constantly,” he added. “If you are caught in a rip current do not try to swim against it because you become exhausted.

“Tread water by moving your arms and legs in circular movements to stay afloat. “Shout for help so that people on the beach can alert lifeguards or the NSRI. “Swim parallel to the beach until free of the rip current and then use the incoming waves to get back to shore.” He said that during spring tide which happens twice a month, at full moon and again at new moon, high tide is higher and low tide is lower and rip currents are stronger. “Bathers should be aware of the spring tide on the coastline,” said Lombinon. Rylan’s body was found by fisherman at the beach on 27 August four days after he went missing. Head of KZN VIP Protection Glen Naidoo said: “The fishermen found the body at the beach and contacted the family in Johannesburg. “The family contacted us to assist. Upon arrival at the scene we contacted the police and the body was taken to Phoenix mortuary,” he said. According to Candace-Anne Grobler from IPSS Medical Rescue the deceased was identified by his family at the scene. “IPSS Medical Rescue together with SAPS Search and Rescue Lifeguards and fishermen recovered the body of the 19-year old boy who went missing a few days ago at Um-

dloti beach. “The body was decomposed, but family members were able to identify him,” she said. The teenager’s friend was rescued said paramedics.

from page 1 Another informal inferno in Tongaat ANDILE SITHOLE SEVEN families in Rajkumar, Tongaat lost their homes and their belongings after a fire at the informal settlement destroyed more than 10 shacks on Monday, 29 August. Residents said that the fire started in one shack and quickly spread to the others. School books, identity documents and other crucial documents were destroyed. Young children aged between five and 10 , who attend a local primary school in Tongaat lost their textbooks and school uniforms. When the Weekly visited the area on Monday, residents gathered under the trees while others were searching for their belongings in the remains. Thembinkosi Ntuli (31) said the fire started at his shack. “We had domestic problems with my girlfriend. She locked the door and set our shack on fire before she fled. I lost a fridge, TV, furniture, food and other items in the house,” he said. Another resident Nosiphiwe Mfingwane (25) said she was asleep when the fire broke out and gutted the shacks. “I was asleep in my house when the fire started. I heard a loud bang on the door and neighbours and children crying. When I went out to investigate I saw that shacks were on fire. I thought I was going to die. “The flames of fire were strong. I dragged my children out of the house and we fled. I watched while the fire was destroying my clothes and other crucial documents that were in the house. My children’s textbooks and school uniforms were destroyed as well,” she said. Mfingwana arrived in Durban from the Eastern Cape in 2011 for job opportunities. “We used buckets of water to douse the flames, but the fire was too strong. In less than five minutes, six shacks were gutted. The fire department arrived after an hour and by then more than 10 shacks were burnt down,” she said. A Grade 12 pupil Simphiwe Ndlovu (18) appealed to the business owners and community members to assist him in buying new books. “My life is not going to be the same again. I have already missed my classes for the

whole week,” he said. Ward councillor Dolly Munien told the Weekly that all the affected residents will be housed at a community hall in Rajkumar. “We are in a process of getting them blankets and food. I have contacted the disaster management team to intervene. “It is high time the municipality

ORE 100 employees from the Tongaat Health Care Clinic took to the streets on 26 August to raise awareness about women abuse. The march started at the clinic and proceeded towards the Tongaat CBD. Men and women carrying placards chanted slogans calling upon women, who had been victims of abuse, to come forward. The intention of a march was to commemorate Women’s Month and encourage women not to become victims of abuse. Nursing service manager at the clinic Makhosazana Mncwabe said: “Women must be strong and supportive. We condemn women abuse and urge perpetrators of such barbaric acts to stop the shabby treatment of the women. “Our main objective is to encourage women to report cases of abuse. “We are tired of being abused and not heard in the society. “Women are important in society,” she said. Operation manager at the clinic Pam Naidoo urged women to unite and fight social ills. “We are supporting a call from our Health MEC, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, on his campaign aimed at raising awareness about women abuse. “The department initiated a programme to stop the abuse of women and children,” said clinic spokesperson, Noma Khoza

Expect hot spring, warns South African Weather Service THIS spring is likely to be hotter than

extreme heat. In June, Co-operative Governance Minister Des van Rooyen declared eight droughtstricken provinces disaster areas. Despite some heavy rains during autumn and winter, South Africa still had a long way to go before recovering from the drought, Ndabambi said. It would depend on the rainfall and temperatures over the coming spring and summer. Dam levels across the country are shockingly low and continuing to drop. This was a serious problem, Ndabambi said. While the rain in autumn helped a bit, the country needed “significant rain” to recover from the drought. The Saws could not provide any confirmation of the expected weather conditions for spring due to the conditions over the Indian Ocean, which were not conducive to making accurate rainfall predictions. Last year, the Saws was able to predict the drought with a great deal of confidence, due to the El Niño system over the country at the time. “Last year, we went through spring and summer knowing what to expect. This is despite the fact that South Africa is moving towards a La Niña weather system, which is characterised by wet and cool weather. While there was a low probability of this, it could mean better rains at the beginning of the summer, but not in spring. South Africa was still experiencing the drought, the result of a sequence of drierthan-normal preceding years, combined with the 2015 El Niño weather system. This was characterised by dry spells and

We have received numerous reports of people who died after falling down the cliff. I suspect that residents use the footpath because it is a shorter, alternative route to Tongaat,” he said. HREE completely different shows performed on three consecutive days on one stage. It’s never been done before in South Africa, but that’s exactly what is motivating Karou Charou to achieve this goal. Three entirely different scripts, costumes, props,

lighting, music, etc, is mentally, physically and technically challenging, but for Karou it’s one more way of showing why he is one of the most commercially successful artists and one of the recognisable brands in the country and the reason why an international brand like McDonalds handpicked him to be the face of their national ad campaign.

Karou will kick his off his Festival at Sibaya’s Izulu theatre on Friday 9 September with the show that catapulted him into the spotlight – Kama Sutra (Sex and Da Charou). This show premiered at Sibaya with a record seven successive soldout shows in a row. Then on Saturday 10 September is Kama Sutra 2 (Come Again). Generally sequels never live up to the original production. This was not the case with Kama Sutra 2, say those who have watched both. In fact they go as far as saying that Kama Sutra 2 is better than the original. On Sunday 11 September Karou will feature the Hot and Spicy family show. In this show children under 10 get to share the stage with Karou. There is a set that involves two audience members, a pack of cards and an egg beater.

Win tickets to the show The ‘Weekly’ and Karou Charou is giving away tickets to three readers. All you have to do is answer the easy question: What is the name of Karou Charou’s festival? Email your answer, name and contact number to valene.govender@media24.com with the subject: Karou Charou. Only val id entries with all required details will be entered into the draw. The closing date is 3 September.

Karou will also be showcasing his newly acquired hypnosis skills and then there is the crowd pleasing cowboy “hoe down” It’s a 90-minute rollercoaster of fun for the entire family. Hot and Spicy is also being recorded for an official DVD release.

Tickets are R100 per person at Computicket, Shoprite and Checkers. Children under 10 and senior citizens pay just R80 Inquiries: 083 660 1424 or info@boxofficesa.com

weeklywheels T’S a case of bigger and better for the seg mentdefining Ford Ranger, which now boasts the most comprehensive lineup in the light commercial vehicle (LCV) sector with the addition of nine trendsetting new 2.2 Automatic models. This takes the ex panded range to an unprecedented 36 de rivatives. “The Ford Ranger has been a huge suc cess story for Ford Motor Company, and has redefined the LCV segment in terms of per formance, capability, technology and safe ty,” says Tracey Delate, general marketing manager, Ford Motor Company SubSaha ran Africa Region. “The introduction of the advanced six speed automatic transmission on the 2.2 Duratorq TDCi models will undoubtedly build on this legacy, broadening its appeal to an even wider audience. Unrivalled driving convenience, comfort and easeofuse have become key selling points for the popular Ranger 3.2 TDCi Auto, and these characteristics are now extended to the refined and economical 2.2 TDCi models. Selecting 4L engages lowrange gear ing, giving the new Ranger exceptional torque and control for demanding offroad terrain. A rear differential lock is also provid ed, ensuring additional traction. The Electronic Stability Program, which is standard on all but the entrylevel Base models, delivers a high level of active driv ing safety. The system incorporates Trac tion Control, Hill Launch Assist, Trailer Sway Control, Adaptive Load Control, Rollover Mitigation, as well as Hill Descent Control on the 4x4 models.

In addition, the Ranger boasts a class leading 800mm water wading depth and 230mm of ground clearance, assuring ex ceptional performance in even the most challenging terrain. The Ranger 2.2 Auto Single Cab models are unique in the LCV segment, as they are the only auto matic derivatives available in a sector dominated by cor porate and fleet sales. Two models are available, com prising the 2.2 TDCi XL 4x2 and the higher specification XLS 4x4. Three versatile Super Cab vari ants of the 2.2 Auto are included in the ex panded model offering, comprising the 4x2 XL, along with the XLS models in either 4x2 or 4x4 guises. The Super Cab is particularly popular with farmers, contractors as well as lifes tyleoriented buyers seeking the added convenience of the extra space behind the front seats, as well as the convenience of the rearopening doors that provide unri valled access to the entire cabin. Outstanding value for money is the hall mark of the Ranger 2.2 TDCi XL Double Cab Auto, which is available in both 4x2 and 4x4 variants. The XLS 4x4 takes the features list up several notches, with the luxuriously ap pointed XLT Double Cab 4x2 rounding off the new Ranger 2.2 TDCi Auto lineup. Supplied.

Tongaat beat Rocky Park FC WEEKLY REPORTER THE Tongaat Calypso Sporting Soccer team defeated their rival, Rocky Park FC at the Safa Tongaat Indoor Football league on 27 August. The team locked horns with Rocky Park FC in the Tongaat Indoor Sports Centre. Tongaat took the lead in the first half, scoring four goals, beating its opponent. The second half saw Tongaat in the attack, scoring two more goals. However, Rocky managed to score one goal making the final score 6-1. Once again, in defence of the Tongaat team, Victor Mngomezulu and Captain Chappa Maphumalo kept the opposition at bay. Veshay Naidoo, Keshev Naidoo, Yasheen Hilton, Renolan Govender and Kyle Pillay continued attacking the Rocky Park FC defence. Head coach Pravinesh Naido said that both goal keepers, Venay Sookdhoo and Lushail Govender, once again did a sterling job in making some crucial and important saves that saw

the team only conceding a single goal. He added the Tongaat team will, once again, focus on training and work on key areas in the weeks ahead. - Supplied.
