This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. Kalisha Naicker Senior Journalist Hillcrest Fever

UPILS from Tongaat Secondary are optimistic after writing their last paper on Monday. The pupils were optimistic that they had aced Afrikaans paper three. Yolanda Rose (18), said the paper was a bit challenging, but she was confident she had excelled. Yolanda was among thousands of pupils who wrote their final senior certificate exams in KZN. Brad Kalicharan (17), said: “It was quite challenging, but due to the great work of our teachers at Tongaat Secondary, we were well prepared for all our papers.” Ushistha Homraj (17), said she is expecting good results. “I want to thank teachers and our parents for their hard work, support and believing in us.” Principal Rajen Singh said teachers worked hard throughout the year to ensure that Grade 12 pupils achieve good results. “Our teachers worked with pupils on Saturdays and holidays to prepare

“The government needs to address this issue of tertiary education fees urgently and make it affordable to the poor.

“Another concern is that most of the pupils were not accepted at universities because there is no space to accommodate them,” Singh added.

ONGAAT residents raised concerns about the election of ward committee members who were elected to work with councillors on 20 November. Some residents claimed that when they arrived at the voting stations they were turned away by the officials. Nkosingiphile Mdletshe (36), a resident from Gwala’s Farm in Tongaat, said municipal officials announced a day before the elections that residents would be transported to a voting station at Buffelsdale Stadium. “The residents waited for the bus from early in the morning, but it did not come. We had to arrange alternate transport to take us from Gwala’s Farm to the voting venue. Other residents were left behind as a result and could not cast their vote. Other residents arrived at the voting station at 11am and were told the registration process was over. They were denied access. In some wards it was reported that elections did not commence at all,” said Mdletshe. Another community member, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of victimisation, told the Weekly he was not allowed on the bus that was transporting community members to the voting station at the stadium. “ANC members on a bus told us that the bus was only arranged for ANC supporters, not the DA. They refused to take other community members. Ward 61 has 10 people who were elected and all are members of the ANC. This is unfair,” he said. Former ward committee member from Gwala’s Farm Maxwell Ndunge (40), rubbished the allegations that there were members of the community who were denied access to the bus. “Those are false allegations. To my knowledge, no one was denied entry to the bus because of his or her political affiliation. The elections were meant for the community irrespective of their political party. The elected members were elected by residents,” he said. When asked about the 10 new members elected in Ward 61, he could not confirm if all were members of the ANC. “I wouldn’t know if all the elected are the members of the ANC.” eThekwini Municipality Head of Communications Tozi Mthethwa said ward committee elections progressed successfully on 27 November with 35 wards completing the voting process peacefully. “The municipality is not aware of anybody who was turned away at any of the voting stations. The voting proceedings were a continuation of the ward committee elections that began on 20 November in eThekwini’s 110 wards.” Several residents complained to the Weekly about the venues listed in the newspaper. One resident said he went to two different voting stations - Canelands Library and Umdloti Clinic and no election process was taking place there. “The women who worked at the library didn’t even know elections were taking place at that venue,” said the resident. The municipality confirmed that these issues are being investigated. “Last week only 70 wards completed the

bp

election process with 40 being postponed to take place on 27 November. Voting in five wards was postponed and a date will be announced to residents in those communities in due course. The issues that led to the postponement are still being investigated. The number of wards that have successfully voted now sits at 105,” said Mthethwa. Mthethwa said there was a heavy police presence at the 40 voting sites to ensure peaceful and fair elections. “Officials from the municipality and the Independent Electoral Commission were also on the ground to assist voters and monitor proceedings. Officials worked around the clock to ensure that voting sites were in order with the setup of infrastructure, the delivery of voting equipment and water tankers on sites in areas experiencing shortages as well as a swift response to reported power outages. The co-ordination of the different departments ensured a smooth election process.” Mthethwa added those elected will undergo a verification process to ensure they meet the requirements to be ward committee members. “Once these verification processes have been completed, those elected will be formally an-

EMBERS of Tongaat SAPS and Tongaat Policing Forum hosted an anti-hijack campaign at Tongaat Primary School on 21 November to educate the public about the increasing crime.

The aim of the meeting was to teach the community how to react when confronted by armed suspects in house robberies, hijackings and other crime incidents. Chairperson of eThekwini outer north cluster Umesh Singh said: “Basically we are looking at ways to reduce

Reaction Unit SA crime report Temple thief arrested: Verulam A 20YEAROLD man was arrested by members of Reaction Unit South Af rica (Rusa) after he broke into a temple at the back of a home in Redcliffe Drive in Verulam on Monday, 21 November. Officers were dispatched to the resi dence after receiving a call from the homeowner reporting the breakin. Upon arrival it was established that forced entry was gained into the temple and several brass bowls were missing. Officers patrolled the area and found the suspect selling the stolen items at a scrap yard in Oaklands. The businessman was in the process of purchasing the stolen items even though the suspect had no identifica tion documents on him. The suspect was arrested and the stolen items were recovered. The victim confirmed that the recovered items be longed to him.

The suspect has been arrested more than 30 times by Reaction officers for crimes varying from house breakins to drug possession. He has served a lengthy jail sentence after being convicted for house breakin and has recently been released from prison. In this incident officers were forced to release the suspect after the home owner refused to charge him criminally. Motor vehicle collision: Verulam At approximately 3pm on Tuesday 22 November members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to the R102 and Inanda Road intersection in Verulam after receiving reports of a colli sion. Upon arrival a Fiat Uno, Chev bakkie and a MercedesBenz were found to be involved in the collision. The occupants of all three vehicles were not injured.

It is alleged that the Fiat Uno was travelling from Canelands and turning into Inanda Road when the Chev bakkie, which was travelling in the opposite di rection, crashed into it. The force of the impact caused the Fiat UNO to collide into the Mercedes Benz which was stationary at the traffic lights. Motor vehicle collision: Verulam A 19yearold woman was injured following an accident on Kissoon Road in Ottawa on Monday 28 November.

Protect your family from financial ruin by closing your death and disability cover gap BY JUGGIE GOVENDER OF EAST COAST FINANCIAL SERVICES (PTY) LTD – FSP 44760 The cost of closing the gap “Times are tough, but it is important to weigh the costs of your insurance against the risk to you and your loved ones of being caught without,” states Dempsey, deputy CEO of ASISA. He emphasises that the loss of a breadwinner can have devastating financial implications for households, resulting in significant hardship. For instance, he notes that the costs of closing the insurance gap are relatively low, as the average earner would only need to spend an additional 4.2% of their monthly income (net of tax) to purchase adequate life insurance, and 2.4% a month for disability cover. “Without purchasing additional insurance, however, households would be forced to generate an additional R4

970 each month following the loss of a loved one and R5 977 following a disability,” he said. He warns that if households were unable to generate this additional income to maintain their standard of living following a tragedy, the study indicates that families would then need to substantially reduce their expenses. “This could mean cutting back on expenses by as much as a 34% following a death and 30% following the disability of an earner in order to plug the insurance gap, which could be very difficult,” he says. He observes that in difficult economic conditions, this could mean that some households would become dependent on other family members, potentially reducing the financial well-being of a much wider group of people. “Insurance is often a grudge purchase, as you won’t see any immediate

North Coast schools score big in development and awareness campaign

WEEKLY REPORTER

HE Safer Cities unit in partnership with the Department of Sports and Recreation and other departments hosted sport development and awareness campaign at the Verulam recreational grounds on 25 November. Waterloo Primary came first in soccer and netball. Mbonisweni Primary’s cricket team emerged champions with their victory. Other schools that participated were Cottonlands Primary, Tongaat Primary and Parkgate Primary. The aim of the event was to unite residents and improve self esteem. Facilitator for Phoenix, Verulam and Tongaat Smangele Ntsodi said the winners received trophies, balls and medals. “Ward councillors accepted the initiative and promised that they will bring business people to support the initiative. It is widely acknowledged that greater involvement in sporting activities has a public health benefit.” Ntsodi said that the intention is to unite people, improve self esteem, inspire the children and increase participation in sport. Staff and pupils at Tongaat Primary School with trees sponsored by Comair to celebrate the company’s 70th anniversary.

Trees for Tongaat school IN celebration of 70 years of uninterrupted, profitable operation, Comair Limited has sponsored 70 trees in conjunction with Food & Trees for Africa. The trees will be planted at schools in Gauteng, the Western and Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal and provide much-needed food and shade in disadvantaged communities. Susan Van Der Ryst, corporate communications manager of Comair, said: “It’s important for business to play a responsible role in social development. “So while we’re very proud of nearly three quarters of a century of operation, this is an opportunity to highlight the need for corporate social investment. The schools at which the trees will be planted will benefit from much-needed shading and nutritional needs, as well as enhancing the aesthetic appeal of their properties.

“We chose to partner with Food & Trees for Africa as it greens, educates, offsets carbon emissions and transforms schools and other community centres into healthier, more sustainable environments.” One of the recipients of these trees was Tongaat Primary School. Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) Trees and Carbon programme manager, Emily Jones said all schools will receive a training morning where they will be taught to plant trees for maximum survival rate – and care for the trees in these water scarce conditions. “Trees have many benefits apart from carbon sequestration. Trees help to clean water, they reduce erosion and noise, they provide fruit, nuts and medicine. Very importantly they provide habitats for wildlife and contribute to civic and school pride,” said Jones. - Supplied.

Inspiring excellence, transforming lives INSPIRING excellence, transforming lives - that is the mission of The University of the Free State (UFS), one of the oldest institutions of higher education in South Africa. In line with its mission, the UFS now offers Advanced Certificates in Teaching (ACTs) in either Foundation, Intermediate, or Senior Phase (English FAL), 100% online. These programmes enable practising teachers to earn their National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 6 qualification conveniently on their computers with no travelling required. Busy South African teachers can now complete relevant and required modules electronically – providing more flexibility in meeting personal and professional needs. Currently the UFS serves more than 33 000 students across seven faculties and three campuses. Prof Daniella Coetzee-Manning from the UFS South Campus said: “Online learning presents an outstanding opportunity to conveniently and affordably progress in higher education and ob-

tain advanced professional qualifications. “It is a brilliant solution for adult students who cannot easily access traditional on-campus or blended contact programmes. Against the background of the current situation of school education in the country, the UFS is mindful of its responsibility to provide access to teachers to improve their qualifications, while they are not able to travel long distances to attend classes.” The UFS is well-prepared to assist teachers in becoming increasingly effective in their work in South African schools. Through continuous projects and long-term commitments to community schools, such as the School Change Project and the widely acclaimed Internet Broadcast Project (IBP), UFS lecturers understand and continue to address the unique needs of South African schools. For more information, please send an email to online@ufs.ac.za or visit the website on www.ufs.ac.za/ACTonline. Alternatively send an SMS to 082 5482 493. - Supplied.

ZN’s premier theatre producers, the multi-award-winning KickstArt, is delighted to present their contribution to the festive season, the traditional family pantomime, Sleeping Beauty, which comes to the Elizabeth Sneddon theatre on UKZN campus. Inspired by the Disney musical fantasy film, Frozen, this magical tale unfolds in a chilly Scandinavian country - all Gothic towers, wreathed with snow, crystal and ice. “We have used an ice colour palette for the décor, costumes and sets – using lots of turquoise, aquamarine, silver and whites, and a recurring snowflake motif,” says designer Greg King. “We have different themes and feels for our pantos,” says writer-director Steven Stead. “For example, last year for Aladdin the production was full of spectacle, this year for Sleeping Beauty, our theme is magic and romance. It promises to be an enchanting magical adventure for all ages.” It stars Haylea Hounsom as Princess Rose, with Lyle Buxton as her prince, Robin. Carol Trench makes another rare and very welcome return to the Durban stage to play her hilarious and anxietyridden mother, Queen Dot, and Peter Court plays her lugubrious, hard-ofhearing father, King Frotho the Frosty. Darren King and Graeme Wicks provide masses of humour as Nurse Nora Knickersnagger and Hucleby Hopscotch the court jester, and Bryan Hiles reaches new levels of charming silliness as the cowardly knight, Sir Ninnyliver. The magical forces of good and evil are represented by Belinda Henwood

as Celestina Sparkle, and Katy Moore as the evil Maleficent. Joining the cast is a chorus of dancers. ARKGATE Celtics were crowned champions of the Verulam Premier League on Sunday managing to hold off a belated surge by Classic FC to eventually take top honours with relative ease. The champions have completed a remarkable campaign only tasting defeat once and led the league for the majority of the season and ended as the league top goal scorers as well. Captain Sifiso said he was very proud of his team’s achievements and they are happy to win the league and hope to do Verulam proud in the SAB league playoffs which they now qualify to play in. The playoffs allow amateur teams to make the transition into the lowest professional football tier structure of South African football and it is a great opportunity for small teams to one day go on and compete

with the traditional big boys of South Africa. Verulam Football president Martha Narainsamy congratulated Parkgate Celtics on behalf of the executive for their great achievement and for playing fabulous football throughout the season. He also took the time to thank all the teams that participated this season and promised them that next season will be even better and extended an open invite to the public to participate in football. Narainsamy also thanked eThekwini Metro Parks and Gardens, who together with himself and the executive of Verulam Football, worked together to get the lights working at the Recreation and Trenance Park grounds. The Verulam Football executive would also like to remind all clubs, junior winners and Verulam squads

Entry fees are: R80 per licenced person in the 10km event and R20 entry fee for the 5km fun run. Many participants at last year’s race decided to enjoy the evening after the race with family along the banks of the famous Umgeni River – Blue lagoon precinct. Presented as part of legacy events by Lower Tugela Lifeskills Committee and organised by Verulam Athletic Club, coupled with the magnanimous support by Ice Promotions, the event is a must for all – both licensed and unlicensed members of the public. The second of the My Life, My Future campaign against Social Ills event enjoys the backing of Ilembe District and all clubs are urged to support this event. There are various opportunities for registration - the online option is available via EVENTTIMING.com or direct deposits on Just 4 Sport. Entry boxes are also available at KZN Athletics and Durban Runner.
