A number of reasons to celebrate

This week ONLINE

MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime

and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. Kalisha Naicker Senior Journalist Hillcrest Fever

>> North Coast residents have some relief following water restrictions MAKHOSANDILE ZULU

K

ZN MEC for Corporate Governance and Traditional Affairs Nomusa Dube-Ncube along with iLembe District mayor Welcome Mdabe and managing director of Sembcorp Siza Water Shyam Misra launched a new water purification plant last Thursday. In the wake of the ongoing drought, Dube-Ncube has welcomed the plant, adding that the recent rains and the commissioning of the plant does mean that communities are past the difficulties caused by the drought. She said such infrastructure is costly and complex to setup and operate however, the benefits out weigh the costs incurred. Dube-Ncube said millions of residents within the province generate waste which has dangerous effects on water sources hence attention must be given to the recycling of water. She said purification is necessary to ensure a sustainable supply of water for social and economic development, adding that government is committed

to working with Sembcorp and other stakeholders to ensure water sources and supply is sustainable. The MEC said educating the public about water preservation would go a long way in terms of reducing the amount that is consumed. Misra said Sembcorp has drilled several boreholes which are monitored for compliance to help ease the effects the drought has caused. He said the new purification plant would produce three million litres per day. Misra said on Thursday the Hazelmere Dam had reach 50% thanks to the rains that fell recently. He said as of the beginning of the week starting 1 August 2016, restrictions would be reduced by 20% for domestic users and by 10% for commercial users. Misra said the plant and its network cost R15 million and that recycled water has already been blended into the existing potable supply.

Petrol price set to tumble AMIL UMRAW WHILE motorists are thrilled to hear the fuel price is dropping dramatically in August, getting the precious liquid into their tanks may pose a problem. This, due to the ongoing strike action by some 20 000 petroleum industry workers nationwide who downed tools on Thursday 28 July. Filling stations across the province have been affected, with some running empty as delivery vehicles are left unmanned. The Automobile Association (AA), which was commenting on unaudited month-end fuel price data released by the Central Energy Fund (CEF), yesterday said petrol will fall by around one rand per litre, diesel by about 70 cents per lite, and illuminating paraffin by roughly 66 cents. “The rand has continued its recent march against the U.S. dollar, with an almost uninterrupted two-month streak of gains,” the AA said. “The rand’s performance has contributed only about 25 cents of the expected fuel price drop in August. The balance has been due to the continued retreat of international petroleum prices in the wake of the United Kingdom’s vote to exit the European Union.” However, the predicted drop in fuel prices comes amid industrial action in the petroleum sector affecting refineries and depots of petroleum companies. “Regarding this strike, the South African Petroleum Industries Association indicated fuel was in supply, and that it had contingency plans in place for the strike,” the AA said. Weekend Witness spoke to filling stations around the province, some of which reported full reserves while others said they have been cleaned out and are praying for deliveries to arrive. Motorists have been left hunting for fuel, some spending up to an hour in queues at filling stations nationwide. The owner of the BP at Cascades in Pietermaritzburg, Petros Sokela, said he ran dry on Thursday at about 8pm, but a delivery did arrive two hours later. Melanie Robert, from the finance division of the Engen in Hayfields, said yesterday afternoon that they were out of fuel, but were waiting for a tanker to arrive from Durban. The Witness reported earlier this week that other filling stations in Pietermaritzburg were also heavily affected. However, some filling stations have had no issues. The manager at the Sasol Garage on Booth Road in Durban, Pulen Pather, said their business has not been affected, but there are challenges with deliveries. Pather said they were inundated with customers on Thursday when other stations went dry. The manager at the Engen One Stop on the N3 at Cato Ridge, Reegen Pillay, said they have not yet been affected. However, both managers agreed they are hoping their situation will remain unchanged.

Mdabe commended Sembcorp for its efforts of ensuring water supply is sustained as this helps ease concern. He said the municipality has spent almost R180 million drilling boreholes and using water tankers to supply water to communities, and that had this

persisted without any rain, the municipality’s funds would have been depleted by the end of August. With regards to the flash floods experienced last week, Dube-Ncube said it is imperative that drainage of storm water be looked at, adding that in

some parts, the floods occurred because members of the community has tampered with drainage systems. She said it is also important that ways to harvest storm water are conceived and implemented.

Umdloti thief apprehended A PRIVATE security officer from Umdloti has been praised for his vigilance, which led to the arrest of a suspected thief. ADT Security armed response officer Sagren Pillay was on duty when he noticed two men who were acting suspiciously enter a complex earlier this month. Pillay immediately called for back-up who arrived within minutes and then proceeded into the complex to investigate further. Pillay’s suspicions were confirmed when the officers witnessed a suspect attempting to break into one of the units. The officers gave chase and successfully apprehended one of the suspects who was handed over for arrest to members of the

Umdloti South African Police Service (SAPS). Ivan Govender, district manager of ADT Security KwaZuluNatal, praised Pillay for his vigilance and bravery. “I am proud of the officer’s quick response which ensured that the criminal has now been placed behind bars.” Govender advised residents to regularly test their alarm systems and to ensure that windows and doors, including garage doors, are properly closed and secured. “As an extra security measure, consider installing outdoor beams; if you already have them ensure that they are also activated,” added Govender. - Supplied

For a better education ALBERT MODI

W

ORKING as a lecturer is one of the more challenging careers in the world today. There are many reasons for this and different people have different views regarding the challenges. What is clearly evident is that times have changed rapidly for many lecturers who have been teaching at universities for decades. The student of today is very different from the one of the eighties or even the nineties. For example, in the “old days”, the supposedly clever university students had to buy textbooks for almost every course, from first to final year of study. Lecturers used chalkboards or simply talked for the whole lecture, expecting students to listen carefully, take notes and read in preparation for assessments. Technology was mainly experienced by the science students taking subjects where practical ses-

Nothing is free WE, the citizens of this great country, have been the victims of deceit by the ruling party. From the birth of democracy, the masses have been promised free education, housing and medical treatment. As any competent businessperson knows, nothing is free. Handing out free groceries at your local grocer will result in bankruptcy. The funds have to come from somewhere. So who pays for all the

sions required that certain techniques should be learnt. Today, teaching and learning at universities require some technology and all students are clever when it comes to communication technology. While we should continue to accept that a university is a “place for clever people”, it is important to realise that South Africa is going through a transformation period. This means that the privilege of studying at university has been opened to many more people who were previously deliberately excluded. The universities are now forced to educate many students who are not well-prepared for the “place for clever people”. These people largely lack some basic skills that characterised those who were given better opportunities in the past or those whose families today can afford to move them from the majority, who continue to struggle in “poor schools” (define that in whatever way

freebees? In South Africa, there are only 3,3 million taxpayers. Considering that there are approximately 22 million people within the working age group in our country, it is frightening to think that just 3,3 million people have to pay for corruption, free medical treatment, free education and free housing. These 3,3 million taxpayers are further burdened to foot the bill of the huge South Africa Social Security Agency (Sassa) budget. This is to provide freebees to individuals who in some cases don’t

you want), to “better schools”. These basic skills are reading, writing and mathematics. Remember the days when there was standard-grade and higher-grade mathematics? It was truly mathematics. It would be irresponsible to say we have to live with the situation. We have to make it work. Firstly, we need to have a school education that is equal for all, and which is provided by welltrained and dedicated school teachers. The best place to train a teacher is a teacher training college. A university should be a place for a teacher to further his or her education. Secondly, we need to create more opportunities to train artisans who will create self-employment, instead of graduates who add to the unemployment figures every year or are willing to do jobs that should be done by people with no degrees. These people can be trained by technikons, not universities. Many universities in

qualify for these benefits. Another great idea by the ruling party. The ruling party has promised the people of South Africa free services at the expense of us, the working class. I’m quite certain that the ANC does not have a trillion rand lying around somewhere to honour these empty promises, which were made just to secure votes. A business will only prosper if the available resources are optimised. Look at the South African economy as a business — 3,3 million people is not optimisation, it is deceit. South Africans, please use your vote wisely during the upcoming local elections as nothing is free.

South Africa would be well-placed as excellent technikons. Thirdly, we need to have a new type of university teacher. This is not just a lecturer. It has to be someone who was attracted to teaching as a career because he or she truly believes that a university teacher has a complex task that provides personal enjoyment while also has a permanent positive impact on those with whom he or she interacts. My philosophy is that everyone has something that can be learnt by others. Hence, everyone can learn something from another person (and the environment), regardless of his or her role in the classroom or the platform where knowledge is shared. Being well-prepared is important for the successful sharing of knowledge. This allows interacting parties to recognise and feel the current, shortterm and long-term effects of their interaction. The current feeling should create an environment of shared space, where it is easy to give and take without any fear of negative consequences. This can be seen as a broadening of horizons in terms of knowledge. The

short-term impact should enable the parties involved to solve the problems or challenges of today, while also provide critical solutions for the future. This can be seen as the ability to perform well in theoretical and practical examinations to deserve a relevant award. The long-term impact should be measured in terms of the target outcomes. This means being oneself, although you have a common identity of a similar qualification as others, and are able to acknowledge the impact of your teacher. My approach to teaching at university in the past 20 years has always involved the objective of producing a better person in my student and myself. I have been fortunate not only to have the classroom as my platform of performance. The fourth and last proposal I have is that all university undergraduate degrees should be done over four years to allow science students, for example, to be taught languages and social aspects of life, in addition to science. Humanity has the ability to make something of a better future from the past.

Thankful for the rain WHEN everything around us seems all doom and gloom with the severe drought, poverty, lawlessness, localelection tension, political killings, corruption, terrorism and so much more, the Lord still remains faithful. The recent rains are evidence that he nev er abandons his people. It is with great de light that I say thank you to the almighty for the tremendous relief that this water from heaven has brought in, quenching the parched earth. While many may still say that the drought has not been broken yet and farmers are still in dire need of more rain, let us be thankful for what we have just received. It is indeed so refreshing to smell cleaner air, to hear the tyres of vehicles sloshing through water on the roads and to see little green shoots be

ginning to sprout in our gardens. The bonus of the snow that has fallen so close to our city has brought with it so much excitement to both adults and children alike. Indeed, this is a blessing from the God of all creation. We should not forget that we are the earthly stewards and custodians of all his creation and we should accept this duty with responsibility. So then let us conserve water for it is not an unlimited resource. Let us not pollute it and let us not waste it. I humbly appeal to everyone to play his or her role in saving water. Lord almighty, thank you for the gift of lifegiving rain. I pray that you will give us one more thing, “the gift of a grateful heart”. DENNIS MOODLEY

Similarities between three faiths are great

Specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist

AN interesting thought occurred to me today about the world’s religions and I thought I should share it. Judaism, Christianity and Islam, known as the Abrahamic faiths as they all have Abra ham in their origins, ironically all have crea tionism over natural evolution to explain life on Earth. Strangely, they all seem to have evolved from the first major monotheistic faith, Juda

ism, to adapt to the societies in which they gained dominance. Today’s modern Islamic extremists like Isis are behaving in a way that was last seen during the inquisitions of Christianity but in these violent times no deities emerged to di rect or bless those involved. There are big differences in all three faiths but the underlying similarities are even greater. For example, in Judaism and Islam,

pork is forbidden, but as genetic traits can of ten skip a generation, it is allowed in Christi anity. I would like to initiate a reader’s debate on this subject. I am no cultural evolutionary expert but could the fact that there are three clearly linked monotheistic faiths not in ef fect prove that no single creator actually ex ists? ROBERT NICOLAI

Women’s day

Defining Women’s Day P

ICTURE what it must have been like – over 20 000 women of all ages and races from all across South Africa marching together towards the Union Buildings in Pretoria. Though each marcher must have thought about the risk of arrest, they bravely came together on 9 August 1956 as a formidable force to protest against the pass laws that proposed further restrictions on the movements of women. This 9 August we celebrate the anniversary of this landmark

Women’s March. It is an ideal time to celebrate and reflect on the status of women today and the advances made since that historical day when South African women organised one of the largest and most successful protests in the country’s history. “The situation on the day (9 August 1956) was very electrifying as everybody was looking forward to a serious confrontation,” marcher Amina Cachalia recalls.

“As a young person at the time, the march was a learning curve for a journey that finally came to the election of the new democratic government.” The Federation of South African Women (Fedsaw) organised the March, led by four women; Helen Joseph (pictured above), Rahima Moosa, Sophy Williams and Lilian Ngoyi. The leaders delivered petitions to Prime Minister JG Strijdom’s office within the Union Buildings. Women throughout the country had put their names to

these petitions indicating their anger and frustration at having their freedom of movement restricted by the hated official passes. Many women wore traditional clothing while others displayed the green, black and gold of the African National Congress. Some of the women marched with babies on their backs, or were accompanied by small children. Rahaba Mahlakedi Moeketsi recalled, “Some were carrying the white children with them, those who were working for whites. “We were all enthusiastic to get there and see this Boer baas and tell him that we are not going to carry those things (passes).”

The Women’s March was a spectacular success. We need to applaud and recognise the bravery of these women who risked official reprisals including arrest, detention and even bannings. The March showed that the commonly accepted stereotype of women as politically inept and immature, tied to the home, was outdated and inaccurate. Women proved that they were not powerless to make significant changes to a way of life that discriminated against them primarily because of their race, but also because of their class and their gender. They had the ability to organise themselves and to be a political force to be reckoned with.- Women24

ADVERTORIAL: Nerusha Perumaul THE trending international pattern on various fronts like politics and business seems to break patriarchal conventions in terms of women’s capacity to lead on various matters. With the recent appointment of Theresa May as Prime Minister in the United Kingdom, to Hillary Clinton’s nomination in the United States to our very own Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zumu in the African Union, women should feel confident that they are equal players on all matters. Death involves certain developments that weaken and extinguish life. It does not affect the Atma; the Atma has no death. It cannot be destroyed. Therefore, one should not fear death. Death is but another stage of life. However long one suffers from illness or however severe the injury, death can happen only when Time signals the right moment. When the yearning for living ends, there can be no more birth. Sathya Sai Baba, Vidya Vahini

AVING launched in South Africa as the world’s safestever hatchback in 2012, the Volvo V40 has been updated for the 2017 model year with a more premium, classier look, and a renewed sense of character. V40 Cross Country models also receive design tweaks, the results of which add an even more adventurous feel to the range. Designed in line with new and future Volvo cars, including the allnew Volvo XC90 and the forthcoming S90, the signature “Thor’s Hammer” LED daytime lights now feature on some models and the new Volvo iron mark takes pride of place inside and out. “While the changes to the Volvo V40 may appear subtle, we are building on what has been established as a competitive player in the premium compact hatchback segment,” says Greg Maruszewski, Volvo Car South Africa managing director. “We continue to offer a complete range of efficient petrol and diesel DriveE engines across the range, and our classleading safety ratings continue to elevate the V40 above its competitors.” The updated Volvo V40 places emphasis on the in dividuality and unique personality of the driver in every respect. The Swedish design and uniquely Scandinavi an approach to life means the Volvo V40 is different – much like the individuals to which it appeals. The collaboration, which continues Volvo’s tradi tion of featuring Swedish musical talent in its advertis ing campaigns, features the new single “Carry On’” per formed by rising Swedish star Sabina Ddumba and pro duced by Andreas Kleerup. Available as standard on certain models and as a costeffective option on others, new allLED head lights which feature Volvo’s new ‘Thor’s Hammer’ light

signature give the V40 range an injection of class and luxury – and bring it in line with other new Volvos like the allnew XC90 and forthcoming S90. While the Volvo V40 exudes class and style in every direction, the Cross Country versions bestow the range with cheeky and adventurous alternatives. Available with all engine and gearbox combina tions on standard V40 models, the RDesign upgrade releases a truly energetic look and feel. A sportier body kit with aggressive front and rear bumpers, large (func tional) exhaust tips, bespoke 18inch alloy wheels, sports seats and a more expressive interior ambience are included in RDesign models – turning any ordinary V40 into a spirited, muscular sports hatch. Introduced during the first half of the V40’s life cy cle, Volvo’s DriveE engines power each and every V40 and V40 Cross Country derivative. Engineered and built by Volvo Cars, the modular engines, all turbo charged and available in petrol or diesel guise, bestow the V40 range with industryleading efficiency poten tial – as well as great performance. With the exception of the 1.5litre turbocharged petrol DriveE engine in the V40 T3 automatic model, the entire lineup is powered by newgeneration 2.0li tre DriveE engines. From the 2.0litre turbocharged diesel which pow ers the V40 D2 – which can consume as little as 3.4li tres per 100 km and emit just 89 g/km of CO2 – to the powerful 2.0litre turbocharged petrol unit in the V40 Cross Country T5 AWD, which puts out as much as 180 kW and 350 Nm, the entire range of engines ensures an optimal balance between driveability and efficiency. The gearbox range continues to include six speed manual, sixspeed Geartronic (automatic) and eightspeed Geartronic transmissions. Standard safety equipment naturally continues to include seven airbags, ABD, EBD and ESC (stability and traction control), and the world’s only pedestrian air bag is still available as an optional extra. City Safety is still fitted as standard to all variants, which uses au tonomous emergency braking to avoid collisions with vehicles travelling ahead. Supplied.

weeklywheels Journey around the world with the help of the unbreakable Toyota Hilux >> World record for circumnavigating the globe nonstop in a hot air balloon in 11 days

NEW chapter has been written in the chronicle of amazing human achievements. Fedor Konyukhov, the famous Russian adventurer, has set a world record for circumnavigating the globe non-stop in a hot air balloon in just 11 days. The previous record set by the American balloonist Steve Fosset was beat by two days. Fedor Konyukhov’s ambitious undertaking was directly supported by Toyota, with the new Toyota Hilux as the official vehicle of this amazing journey. Over a year ago, the legendary Toyota Hilux pickup accompanied the prominent adventurer in all preparations to the around-the-world flight. First of all, it supported the training phase in Russia. Then, during the pre-flight prepa-

rations in June, the seventh-generation Toyota Hilux participated in the official handover of a new Cameron Balloons hot air balloon to Fedor Konyukhov in Bristol, UK. On 12 July, the invincible pickup was indispensable at the launching site near Northam,

Australia – Toyota Hilux prevented the balloon from a premature take-off, while the envelope was being filled with helium. Finally, the pickup was among the first to ar-

Mahindra declared as the Most Improved Passenger brand for 2016 MAHINDRA South Africa has reason to celebrate after a strong showing in the annual dealer satisfaction survey conducted by the National Automobile Dealers’ Association of South Africa (NADA). The results of the survey were announced at a gala dinner last week. Mahindra was acknowledged as the Most Improved Passenger Brand by its dealers in the dealer survey, while it also received a Bronze Award for overall dealer satisfaction. The 2016 survey encompassed a total of 39 independently researched brands, and the results were compiled from more than 1 500 responses received from NADA-accredited franchise dealers, of which 1 329 were submitted by passenger car/light commercial vehicle dealerships. The survey is based on the answers to 50 key questions based on every facet of the relationship between dealers and their OEMs and or Distributors. Mahindra was in the top 25 percent of responses to key aspects such stock availability, vehicle deliveries, warranty payments and CSI recognition.

Compared to the 2015 survey, Mahindra moved up eight places with an overall score of 65,7 percent. It showed the most improvement of all brands as far as Dealer Communication and Customer Focus were concerned. It also achieved a top five spot for Vehicle Distribution, and was among the top 10 brands in the Dealer Satisfaction category. “Our performance in the 2016 NADA Dealer Satisfaction Awards highlights just one of several strategies to ensure the consistent progress of the brand in South Africa. “We continue to expand and improve the Mahindra model offering, and are also placing a particular emphasis on achieving ever higher levels of dealer satisfaction which ultimately results in improved customer satisfaction,” said Sanjoy Gupta, Chief Executive Officer from Mahindra South Africa. “Mahindra SA recently reached an important milestone when overall retail sales in SA since 2004 surpassed the 30 000 mark. We are convinced that the brand and its products have a bright future in SA.”

again secured with the help of Toyota Hilux, enabling Fedor Konyukhov to exit the pod safely. Fedor’s balloon was airborne for 11 days, traveling the distance of 34,950 km: it passed over the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans, approached Antarctica and flew across Australia, South America and Africa. Konyukhov has been flying at heights of up to 10,600 m while enduring temperatures down to -55°C. Celebrating the new world record, Fedor Konyukhov’s son Oscar Konyukhov, who headed the ground support team, said: “I’m extremely proud of my father! It’s hard to grasp the scope of what he managed to achieve. To complete a record-breaking nonstop circumnavigation in a hot air balloon from the first attempt is one chance in a million. And he did just that!” “The whole Toyota team sincerely congratulates Fedor Konyukhov and all participants of the Round The World On a Roziere Balloon project. The example of the 65-year old traveller who challenged the nature and circumstances proves that there is nothing impossible for a human. Especially when supported by true friends and a vehicle you can rely on in the most extreme situations,” commented Tatiana Khalyavskaya, marketing director at Toyota Motor Russia.
