A number of reasons to celebrate

This week ONLINE

MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. Couple run KZN coast for LIV village kids >> Residents put the needs of others first I have a LIV Village band on my wrist and it always reminds me of the reason I started this journey

KZN couple who embarked on a mammoth challenge to run the entire coastline of the province in 30 days, are expected to complete the trek today. Radio personality and businesswoman Phindi Gule-Burley and her husband Kevin started the “Run KZN with us” campaign on April 1 at Kosi Bay, near the Mozambican border, and ran 900 km to Port Edward on the South Coast, where they were expected to arrive at the weekend. They run 30 km a day with a water break after every three kilometres in

Phindi previously said that until she started the quest, it had seemed “almost impossible to achieve”. She said it was a lesson that hard work pays off. “I always think about the children when I feel challenged along the journey. I have a LIV Village band on my wrist and it always reminds me of the reason I started this journey,” she said. The LIV Village caters for orphans and abandoned children. It costs R1 000 a month to accommodate a child at the facility. With 96 homes currently catering for 160 children, the couple aim to fund one home for 10 children for a year and will need to raise at least R120 000.

an effort to raise funds for children living at the LIV Village children’s home in Verulam. The couple reached 870 km yesterday and rested at the Caribbean Estates in Port Edward.

Mbonisweni Primary cleans up >> Residents and staff get their hands dirty GRAHAM BARCLAY

P

ASSIONATE pupils and staff at Mbonisweni Primary School in Hambanathi, Tongaat launched a new campaign on Monday, 23 April that seeks to create a cleaner environment at their school. More than 100 community members, including parents, teachers, civil society groups and pupils came together to partake in a massive cleanup programme aimed at promoting a healthy, cleaner and safer learning environment. Mthokozisi Mdakane, education officer at Durban Solid Waste (DSW), said the programme was the culmination of weeks of preparation and organisation. “All relevant stakeholders such as the community, government departments at municipal and provincial level, former students, the school’s management team as well as the business community were involved in the planning of this grand affair,” said Mdakane.

“This is only the beginning; we as DSW have a lot of programmes in the pipeline that will be rolled out in the different areas of our communities”, she added. The ‘Clean & Maintain My School’ campaign was born out of eThekwini Municipality’s brainchild initiative ‘Clean & Maintain My City’, which is a programme championed by eThekwini mayor, James Nxumalo. This programme coincides with the municipality’s vision of making eThekwini a caring and liveable city by 2030. Mbonisweni Primary School’s alumni also played a crucial role in the execution of this programme by giving back to their alma mater. This was done to ensure that the planning for the day’s activities came to greater fruition. Mdakane said the municipality wants to encourage the community of Hambanathi, its surrounding areas as well as the greater metropolitan area of eThekwini, to support this campaign and initiate clean-ups either at

their homes or churches. School principal, Ziphiwo Mahlobo expressed her happiness with the programme and pledged the school’s full support to its aims. “We are extremely happy that the municipality and DSW have identified our school as a venue to launch this wonderful campaign. We hope that our pupils will take heed of the valuable environmental lessons that the many officials have imparted in them,” said Mahlobo. “Working together with the community, we are confident that we will transform our school into a unique centre of excellence that will produce a great calibre of students,” she added. The activities for the day included a clean-up that saw many pupils and their parents participate in, while songs, dance and other forms of educational entertainment were among some of the other items for the day. The day ended with a keynote address by KZN Member of Provincial Legislature (MPL), Lindiwe Bebee, who discussed the importance of community involvement in meeting government halfway where development is concerned.

ANOTHER successful Gandhi Salt March was held on Saturday 24 April, which drew a large crowd of participants in support of the values the event represents. Trustee of the Gandhi Development Trust, Kidar Ramgobin, said this year saw a link with Martin Luther King Foundation being forged through the participation of Professor Julie Washington from Atlanta, Georgia who gave a powerful message of support. Linda Zama from the KZN Premier’s office, Logie Naidoo from eThekwini Municipality, Consul General of India for Durban, Rajagopalan Raghunathan, Bishop Mike Voster and Hindu Swami from the Ananda Marg all prayed and gave messages of support. Many temple groups brought young participants from their faiths and schools such as the Durban High School, while others brought large numbers of young people to participate. Large numbers also came from Inanda and Phoenix communities, who turned out in force to support the march. The oldest participants were two 82-yearold men and a 76-year-old woman, who took the 5km route in their stride, while the event’s youngest entrant was a 15-month-old infant, who completed their second Gandhi March. “We attracted some 840 participants, and this year we attracted volunteers from the public and the Durban Youth Council, who did an excellent job in assisting,” said Ramgobin. “We thank all the participants, volunteers, service providers, the Indian Consulate of Durban, eThekweni Municipality, the Premier’s Office and the Salt March Committee for supporting this annual event,” he added.

How to get money savvy BY JUGGIE GOVENDER OF EAST COAST FINANCIAL SERVICES (PTY) LTD – FSP 44760 WITH the current environment of rising interest rates and rising inflation, and thus increased living expenses, South Africans face greater financial pressure – which may impact their ability to save, or increase their savings. With some forward planning and creative thinking, this need not be the case however. If you have not already implemented these habits, there are some practical things you can do to streamline your spending to enable you to keep your savings at an appropriate level. Tips to help you save more: Pay yourself first There is a saying that you should pay yourself first. The idea is that you ensure that you save some money before paying all the expenses, instead of

Kalisha Naicker

Diabetes is not a choice HELLO,my name is Kalisha and I am dia betic. Why do I introduce myself this way? Well, it is because of all the pity state ments and “looks” I get when I am out with friends and have to take my insulin ‘shot’ before my meal. People at other ta bles gasp in horror when they see the insulin pen in my hand (not that I ‘shoot up’ in front of them), others walk up to me and say the dumbest things, such as, “Shame, are you diabetic? Do you eat a lot of sweet stuff? or “Have you tried try drinking lots of water so your sugar levels de crease?” Not forgetting the star es I get when I reveal “my status” and people think I am contagious. I did not choose the illness it is more like the illness chose me. How ever, I am learning to live with it and feel that our community needs to be educated on how to deal with it. Let me educate some of you on what di abetes really is. Diabetes, often re ferred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, de scribes a group of meta bolic diseases in which a person has high blood glucose (blood sugar), such as myself, either because insulin produc tion is inadequate, or be

paying all your expenses first and then saving any remaining amounts. This way saving also becomes a priority. Understand and know your ex penses You need to understand all your expenses so that you can track how you spend your money. This can be an exceptionally sobering exercise as you may find that you spend a lot of money on unnecessary things you think you need. Make a list of all expenses and start cutting out these unnecessary items. Ultimately create a budget and stick to it. Review and reduce your expenses This should be ongoing exercise. Some expenses are unavoidable whereas some can be reduced and in certain cases even avoided. These are some examples: Be aware of bank charges - How much have you been paying

cause the body's cells do not respond properly to insulin, or both. There is also gestational diabetes, which affects pregnant females. Some women have very high levels of glucose in their blood and their body is unable to produce enough insulin to transport all the glucose into their cells, resulting in progressively rising levels of glucose. This is also treated by medication and usually cures itself after pregnancy is over. Hence all types of diabetes are treat able. Diabetes Type 1 lasts a lifetime, there is no known cure. Type 2 usually lasts a lifetime, however, some people have managed to get rid of their symp toms without medication, through a combination of exercise, diet and body weight control.

in bank charges? Make sure that you have the appropriate bank account to avoid unnecessary fees. Reduce debt, and pay less interest - By reducing your debt, you’ll bring down the amount you are paying in interest. You should make sure you understand the interest that is charged on your credit card and retail accounts. Review insurance annually - A simple exercise is to amend the value of your car annually to ensure that you are paying the appropriate premium. Similarly, review the value of household goods annually to ensure that you are not over-insured and paying unnecessarily high premiums. Shop and eat smart – Compile shopping lists and only buy what you need. Plan your meals and where possible buy in bulk. It is advisable to compare prices and even change brands. Cutting down on junk food and being creative with the leftovers can also make a difference. You may even consider growing your own veggie garden.

Type 1 diabetes is treated with regu lar insulin injections, as well as a special diet and exercise. Type 2 diabetes is usually treated with tablets, exercise and a special diet, but sometimes insulin injections are al so required. If diabetes is not ade quately controlled the patient has a significant ly higher risk of develop ing complications. I assure you that dia betes is not contagious and is a preventable ill ness, so the next time you see someone with an insulin pen, or a person reveals that they are dia betic, do not pity them,

Save on utilities – We all are fully aware of the importance of saving electricity. Yet we don’t always implement strategies to lower our electricity bill. Try switching off the television and lights when not in use, or using energyefficient appliances and products. Use more blankets in winter and cut down on heaters. You could replace all your lights with energy efficient bulbs, switch to a gas stove, etc. Similarly, save water by replacing your shower heads with water efficient ones, taking shorter showers, getting a tank to collect rain water for the garden and covering your pool to reduce evaporation. Maintain your car and drive smart – Make sure that your motor vehicle is maintained properly as failure to do so could result in costly repairs. It will also help in ensuring your car runs efficiently and your petrol bill is reasonable. One simple tip is to ensure your tyres are inflat-

OTHERS are celebrated in many countries on different dates and in different ways. Mother’s Day traditions and customs may vary, but the basic theme is to honour mothers. In Britain, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent, and is called Mothering Sunday. In medieval times, children of poor families often had to work away from home as servants or apprentices to rich families. They were given time off in Lent, so they could worship the Virgin Mary and visit their home, “mother church” and their families. The children would often pick flowers to give to their mothers and bake special cakes called Mothering Cakes In Brazil, Mother’s Day is one of the most commercial holidays celebrated, second only to Christmas, celebrated on the second Sunday in May with special children’s perform-

ances and church gatherings. Fête des mères takes place in late May or early June in France. It did not become an official day of celebration until 1950, but was originally declared a holiday by Napoleon. On this day, moms relax, relying on their children to cater to their needs and do the chores. Gifts are given and sometimes short, original poems are recited. The giving of carnations and other flowers on Mother’s Day is popular in Australia, celebrated on the second Sunday in May. Chrysanthemums are also a very popular floral choice, because mothers there are called Mum. In Ethiopia Mother’s Day is celebrated at the end of the rainy season, as part of the three-day Antrosht festival, dedicated to moms. When the weather clears up, family members come home to celebrate with a large feast. Daughters traditionally bring vegetables, butter, spices and cheese, while the sons bring meat of various types, including lamb or bull. Another country which needs three days to fully acknowledge their mothers and the spirit of family is Serbia, where Mother’s Day takes place in December and is part of a series of holidays including Children’s Day and Father’s Day. All three holidays take place on consecutive Sundays.

GMSA’s support for the Chair in Me chatronics also includes the opportuni ty for students to complete their inser vice training at the company, participat ing in GMSA projects and acquiring critical onthejob training and experi ence. “We make extensive use of me chatronics engineering skills in our plants, which are highly mechanised and use robotic systems. The company has employed several graduates from the programme and will continue to do so in future.” Osborne explained that GMSA and the current holder of the Chair, Profes sor Igor Gorlach, were instrumental in establishing the programme in NMMU’s Engineering Faculty in 2009 in a five year contract with the University. The partnership was renewed from the be ginning of 2014. To date more than 30 projects have been completed by Mechatronics stu dents over the years. These projects aim to benefit GMSA through the develop ment of unique and innovative solu tions to industry problems, whilst stu dents gain practical experience.

S manufacturing industries have become more and more depend ent on computerised and robotic machinery, the need to align its skills base has also increased. To this end, General Motors South Africa (GMSA) has been partnering with the local university, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), to ensure the required skills are developed for motor manufacturing in Port Eliza beth. According to GMSA’s Training and Organisational Development Manager, Wayne Osborne, the eight year sponsor ship of the Chair in Mechatronics at the NMMU is vital in enabling the institution to contribute meaningfully towards the manufacturing industry’s require ments. Mechatronics combines a number of aspects of engineering, including me chanical and electrical engineering, ro botics, programming and computer aided design. NMMU is the only universi ty in the Eastern Cape offering a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Me chatronics.

SCHOOL SCENE 14 WEEKLY Trubel Primary stalwart calls it a day CLASSIFIEDS

coastal

T

RUBEL Primary School teacher Preetha Kumari Balay has served in the Department of Education for over 35 years and she retired from the school last month. Born and raised in the Clare Estate area in the Satyenda family, she completed her primary school education at Essendene and S.M. Javary Schools and finished her matric at Clare Hills Secondary. In 1981 she completed her teacher’s diploma at the Springfield College of Education and was posted to Natest Primary in Mount Edgecombe. In 1985 she was transferred to Trubel Primary School where she remained until her retirement. In 1988 she successfully completed her Diploma in Special Education for Mentally Handicapped Children. Balay acted as head of department in the Foundation Phase in 2009 and

has made a big difference to the pupils’ lives ever since. At her farewell function principal Mr. G. Ramcharan was full of praises of not just her teaching ability, but the extra mile she went to make the lives of others a little more significant and comfortable. “We have spent almost 30 years teaching in the same institution and I have seen Mrs. Balay grow from a young, enthusiastic and passionate teacher to one who guided and provided parental care to all,” said Ramcharan. As a top sports girl in her school days, Balay continued to coach and promote sport at Trubel as well. “The fact that she taught the special class for so many years is indicative of her passion to teaching children. Long standing colleague and peer of more than three decades, Mrs. N. Smiling with success, the Mountview debating team secured another victory in the Phoenix Debating League. MOUNTVIEW Secondary School’s debating team has exceeded expectation yet again after performing consistently well in all four rounds of the Phoenix Debating League.

At the helm of this talented team is captain, Siyabonga Mtshali, who was recently selected to take part in national trials in the run up to the World Debating Championship taking place lat-

er this year. There is very stiff competition between teams in the league, and Mountview has once again emerged victorious.

TRENANCE Park Secondary participated in the Phoenix Debating league fixtures last month at Verulam Secondary School. The Grade 8 team excelled in the two rounds of debates with Shahina Singh flagged as best speaker. Mayuri Ranjith received recogni-

tion for her performances in the league fixtures and has been selected to represent the league at the KZN Trials to be held at the end of June. Alliyah Govinden (best speaker in Round 2), Mayuri Ranjith and Shahina Singh make up the Grade 8 team.

OMMITTED students of the martial art of karate were treated to a rare opportunity over the last few days as Japanese ‘Supreme Master’, Murakami Manabu visited Tongaat to hold a series of karate seminars for local ‘karate-kas’. Manabu’s visit provided students of the martial art the chance to implement everything they have learned from their Sensei and take away the traditional skills and techniques showcased by a true master of karate. Local karate instructor and president of Karate South Africa (KSA), ‘Hanshi’ Sonny Pillay said the seminars were a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet and learn from the best in the world and to take away some of the home-grown attributes of true Japanese karate. “It was a real honour to welcome Supreme Master Manabu to Tongaat, where there is a thriving karate com-

the title of ‘Kyoshi’. Now an 8th Dan black belt and karate master himself, Pillay has devoted his life and career to the development of the martial art in South Africa and the petition to make karate an Olympic sport in the Tokyo Games of 2022. As the owner of Shotokan Karate International South Africa (SKISA), he trains a group of more than 30 children every Thursday at the Tongaat Town Hall, where Manabu held his seminars. “As the president of KSA I am very optimistic about karate in our country because there is every possibility it will make the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which gives kids of today an Olympic dream to reach for,” said Pillay, who was recently presented with the Ammen Award for sporting excellence by the Mariammen Temple in Tongaat.

For those children with the dream of earning their black belts and representing South Africa in the Olympic Games, spending time with Murakami Manabu was an important first step in perfecting their karate skills. Above all, what Manabu’s visit represents is how deeply immersed the small town of Tongaat is in the culture and spirit of karate. “Karate is my lifeblood. It would be fair to say that I eat, sleep and dream karate and I was delighted that the Mariammen Temple committee recently honoured me with a special commendation as it inspires me to continue my work in the world of karate,” he added.
