A number of reasons to celebrate

This week ONLINE

MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime

continues to destroy some of our communities. However, the one thing that continues to stand undefeated is the spirit of the Upper Highway community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. Kalisha Naicker Senior Journalist Hillcrest Fever

Burst sewerage pipes anger residents ANDILE SITHOLE

M

OTORISTS and residents travelling on the Edmund Moore Road in Tongaat are fed up and demand that council find the cause of the burst sewerage pipes to burst in Trurolands. Residents using the road daily told the Weekly that for the past two months other people who are rushing to work have to find alternative routes to get to the Tongaat CBD in order to avoid the raw sewage that is running across the road. When the Weekly visited the area on Monday morning, the stench was unbearable. A member of the community Christopher Narainan (25) told the Weekly that he arrives at work late because he has to take another route to get to work. “I start work at 8am Monday to Friday. Due to the raw sewage running across the road I am forced to use anoth-

er alternative route to get to work and that is delaying me. Last time I travelled on this road my car got messed and the stink is unbearable. I reported the matter to eThekwini Municipality in July this year and after five days, municipal workers came to repair it. “We were over the moon that the problem was sorted out. After two days the sewer burst again and the whole road was in a total mess. I reported it to the municipality and the municipal workers came to repair it again. “What we need from the municipality is to detect the cause of the problem and rectify it. Repairing pipes is not helping us because after two days the pipes burst again,” he said.

Armed Tongaat robbers get heavy sentences ANDILE SITHOLE

T

HREE men were sentenced to 72 years at the Durban High Court last week on several counts, including murder. The men were also linked to a robbery that occurred at a Tongaat store in March 2014. Phelelani Luthuli (22), Sifiso Ngonoma (26) and Sibongiseni Zulu (22) were found guilty of robbery with aggravated circumstances, murder, two counts of unlawful possession of ammunition, two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm and three counts of attempted murder. In the 2014 incident four gun-wielding men entered the shop and held up staff and customers demanding cash. The suspects forced the cashiers to lie on the floor while another suspect removed cash from the safe. Tongaat SAPS received an anonymous call alerting them about a robbery in progress at the store. According to information received from Tongaat SAPS, when the police arrived at the scene two suspects ran away on foot and two pretended to be customers. The two who pretended to be customers were arrested after being identified by customers. The two suspects who fled ran to the Tongaat CBD and police gave chase. There was an exchange of fire between them and the police. One of the suspects, Bhekuzalo Luthuli (35), was shot dead during the shoot-out with police. About R22 000 was stolen from the store, but later recovered by the police after the suspects were defeated in a gun battle. SAPS spokesperson in Tongaat, Warrant Officer Manisha Maharaj-Marie, welcomed the conviction and commended the police for a job well done. “We would like to commend our members for a job well done. “Detectives and the investigating officer worked tirelessly to ensure that the suspects get a heavy sentence. “The management of Tongaat SAPS applauds the members who worked on this case,” she said. In a separate incident, three armed men entered a store in the Tongaat CBD and robbed the owner. According to the police the owner was closing his store at about 6.15pm when the armed men held him up in gunpoint and demanded cash. “The suspects forced the owner to lie on the floor and tied him up with cable ties before putting him into another room inside the store. “The suspects took R30 000 from the safe and the victim’s two cellphones. Police are investigating a case of business robbery,” she said. At the time of going to press, no arrests had been made and the two fleeing suspects are still at large.

Burst sewerage pipes anger residents Another resident, Sibani Zondi (27), walks to work and has to use the road and says he has to jump over to the sewage every day on his journey. “It is not only a health hazard in terms of the stench, it is also risky to jump on this narrow road. We have to jump across the road and sometimes we get splashed with sewage when cars are passing. The municipality must do something about it,” he said. Jessica Pillay (35), a Flamingo Heights resident, said: “It is irritating because we struggle to cross the road. “The raw sewage runs in the paving and in the middle of the

road. We fear that someone will get knocked over by a car while crossing the road. We reported the matter to the councillor and she promised to sort it out,” she said. Ward councillor Dolly Munien told the Weekly: “In our presentation with the Durban Solid Waste last week, it emerged that the storm water and sewer system in the area are somehow linked. “It is a problem that the municipality is currently working. But due to the recent heavy rains the pipes burst causing a lot of damage. “It is not only in Trurolands,

Residents commemorate World Heart Day

WEEKLY

ANDILE SITHOLE

HRONIC diseases such as heart attack and stroke need special medical attention as soon as the body shows symptoms. These were views shared at the heart and stroke awareness programme at Mediclinic Victoria Hospital in Tongaat last week as 29 September was World Heart Day. Those attending the function were urged to be vigilant of the early symptoms of heart attack and stroke diseases. The initiative was part of the clinic’s community work programmes aimed at giving back.

Nursing services manager Vanitha Naicker urged senior citizens to check for high blood pressure and cholesterol regularly in order to maintain a healthy life. “Excising every day helps the heart pump blood effectively and this is recommended for patients suffering from high blood pressure,” she said. According to the KZN Department of Health a lack of exercise, unhealthy diet, high blood pressure, cholesterol and high glucose levels are main factors that cause heart disease.

The department said in a statement that heart disease and stroke kill 17.1 million people every year. KZN MEC for Health Dr Sbongiseni Dhlomo said in a statement: “World Heart Day encourages us to reduce our cardiovascular risk and promotes a heart-healthy planet for those around us. “It is part of the international campaign to spread awareness about heart disease and stroke prevention. “This is the perfect day to quit smoking, get excising and start eating healthy, all in the name of keeping your heart in good working order and improving the health and well-being of other people. “The department encourages people to make lifestyle changes and adopt ways that are good for their heart. This message is becoming increasingly relevant as reports of obesity, poor diet and physical inactivity in children and young people become more common,” he said. The department said that about 80% of premature deaths from heart disease and stroke could be avoided if the main risk factors such as tobacco, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity

TONGAAT resident is determined to implement change in his community by encouraging his peers to refrain from bad habits and inspire them to participate in social activities that will benefit the community. Sabatha Ngubane (23), an ambitious man driven by passion, initiated a programme which assists youth to sharpen their skills and give them a platform explore their talents. Ngubane plans to roll out this programme through his organisation uThongathi Ambitious Youth (TAY). He told the Weekly that the idea was conceived last year and kicked off early in 2016. However, he said that TAY is still experiencing teething problems due to financial constraints. The organisation has nine active members working in partnership to help the youth to be proactive and leaders of change in their own community. “The recent upsurge on drug

abuse, teenage pregnancy and apathy among the youth to further their studies motivated me to stand up and rescue our future ambassadors. It has always been my dream to work for the community and assist young people. We currently have youth participating in poetry, music and traditional dance” he said. In July this year the members of TAY embarked on a cleanup campaign in Tongaat educating the community about the importance of keeping the environment spontaneous. In addition to that educational programmes aimed at encouraging the youth to refrain from drug abuse and other bad habits were held in Tongaat. He said that TAY is currently seeking financial support from business owners who can make his dream to empower the youth come true. After he completed his studies at the Durban University of Technology in 2013 in Public Relations Management, he decided to give back to his community and instil positive ideas among the youth. “We adopted a programme to educate the community about social problems that we are facing. I felt that there was a need to do something in my community and persuade our youth not to get involved with drugs. In the interim the organisation comprises nine members.

Some of the members of uThongathi Ambitious Youth at a cleanup cam paign held in Tongaat to educate the community about the importance of cleanliness. “I felt that the community of Magwaveni was neglected and that caused the youth to pick up bad habits such as drug abuse. “Our area used to be the harbour of great talents, but that spirit faded away in the past years. Our goal is to revive it and show the youth that it is crucial to be positive in life. “We also help the youth choose careers after completing matric. So far the response from the community is amazing and parents have started to seek advices from us to intervene and help their children. “Although we are struggling financially to make our campaigns a success, we hope our programmes will

Steve Fataar’s ‘Golden Oldies’ comes to Sibaya ONE of South Africa’s most celebrated musi cians will set the stage alight at the Sibaya iZulu Theatre from 7 to 9 October with a trip down rock n roll memory lane that is not to be missed. Steve Fataar and friends promise a night to remember with Steve Fataar’s Golden Ol dies, a night of celebrating some of the great est music of the 50s, 60s and 70s featuring hits of The Beatles, Everly Brothers, Cliff Richard and the Shadows, Elvis Presley and many others. Fataar will evoke nostalgia when he plays

the biggest hits of The Flames, the band that took the SA music scene by storm with in the 60s, with hits like Tell it like it is and Your Pre cious Love which topped the charts in 1968. He later went on to tour the UK and US with the group, sharing the stage with the likes of the Beach Boys and others. Steve says the music of The Flames has remained close to the hearts of fans locally and abroad and he is looking forward to re living the magic on stage again. “There isn’t a show I play when someone doesn’t ask me to play Your Precious Love,”

flourish to other townships in the north coast. We want to embrace youth talent and give them platform to explore their skills And we also want to get mentorship for them. Furthermore we have other programmes lining up to educate the community of Tongaat at large,” he said. “We anticipate to get our programmes rolling in Hambanathi township soon and address the problems that the youth encounter. Our main intention is to explore skills and give youth platform to showcase their talents,” he added. For more information, contact Sabatha Ngubane on 081 8070688 or email utay2016@outlook.com

he says. While Fataar promises to play all the fan favourites, the show will also be an opportu nity to bring to life other golden oldies that audiences have never heard him play before. “There is going to be a few surprises that’s for sure. The 50s and 60s were incredible dec ades for music and there’s just a treasure chest of beautiful songs to dig into.” It’s going to be a night of musical memo ries and one definitely not to be missed. Steve Fataar’s Golden Oldies takes place at the Sibaya iZulu Theatre on 7 and 8 Octo ber at 8pm and 9 October at 3pm. Tickets are R120 and are available from Computicket and Checkers. Supplied.

ENERAL Motors South Africa (GMSA) has started delivering a facelifted version of the sixth gener ation Isuzu KB to approved dealers in Southern Africa. The 2016 Isuzu KB boasts some styling changes to the front fascia and rear tailgate as well as a redesigned instrument gauge cluster. Some of the key changes for the 2016 KB are: •New front fascia design including changes to bonnet, radiator grille and fog lamps •New headlamps with projector and in tegrated LED day time running lights on LX models •New tailgate styling on extended and double cab models. •Rearview camera integrated to tail gate handle on LX double cab models •4x4 decal on load box •LX models get stylish new 18 inch alloy wheels •New 16 inch styled wheel for rest of the range •New instrument cluster design with improved functionality and gear shift indi cator for manual models. “The new KB looks a lot sleeker and streamlined with a new instrumentation cluster design, improved sound system while maintaining all the key Isuzu charac teristics we have come to love. In addition to the new look, 3 litre 4x4 LX Double Cab customers will benefit from additional val ue as these models now come standard with a towbar, sportsbar, roofrails and power adjustable leather seats,” says Brian Olson, Vice President Vehicle Sales, Ser vice, and Marketing General Motors Sub Saharan Africa. The 2016 range continues with the proven 2.5 and 3.0 litre diesel engines. The powerful 3.0litre DTEQ turbocharged die sel with 130kW and 380Nm from the com

mon rail direct injection turbodiesel does duty in top of the range models. Combined Cycle fuel consumption is 7.9 litres per 100 km for 4x4 double cab and extended cab models, dropping to 7.7 litres per 100 km for the 4x2 versions. The single cab 4x2 also returns a figure of 7.7 litres per 100 km, with the 4x4 single cab version consuming 8 li tres per 100 km. A key feature of LX models is a touch screen infotainment system with satellite navigation, internet, WiFi, and smart phone integration. The screen – a 1080p highdefinition TFT unit with a generous

6.5inch dimension also acts as the dis play when browsing, or using the DVD play er. The Rear Park Assist reverse camera is now integrated into the rear tailgate han dle on all LX double cab models. Passive entry and start system (PESS) is a keyless entry with Start/Stop ignition button is standard on all LX double cab models. Leather is available as standard on the 4x4 auto and manual double cabs and as an option on 4x2 Double Cab deriva tives. The second powertrain option is the

2.5litre DTEQ commonrail direct injection turbodiesel, which was introduced last year with 100kW and 320Nm. The 2.5 comes with a variable geometry turbo charger similar to the 3.0 DTEQ engine, which allows for fine management of boost pressure. With a 20 percent increase in torque at 1 200 rpm and a much wider power band compared to its predecessor, all Isuzu models powered by this unit enjoy vastly improved driveability. Two workhorse models, the 250 Base Single Cab (LEED) and 250 Fleetside single cab (LEED), are equipped with the Direct

Injection 4 Cylinder 2.5 Diesel engine which produces 58 kW and 170 Nm and has an impressive combined fuel consumption figure of 7.9 l/100 km. Revised suspension for a smoother ride Local engineers covered over a hundred thousand kilometres refining the suspen sion of the latest model for a smoother rid er on all road surfaces. HiRider 4X2 models received new front and rear dampers while 4X4 models received revised rear dampers only. Rebound control was refined to have more compliant characteristics at both low and high piston damper speeds. The end result is a smoother ride across a greater variety of terrain i.e. improved iso lation from high way road vibration and re duced harshness from high impact. Complete Care equals complete peace of mind Isuzu has a complete customer care programme aimed at giving customers peace of mind by covering all aftersales re lated worries under one programme. Isuzu Complete Care covers: • All routine maintenance, regular ser vicing and roadside emergencies • New Vehicle Warranty – Standard 5 Year or 120 000km • Roadside Assistance for 5 Years or 120 000km • 5year/ unlimited mileage anticorro sion warranty and, • 5year/ 90 000 km service plan. weeklywheels Local Production Begins for Expanded Ford Everest Range

F

ORD’S sophisticated Everest sport utility vehicle (SUV) is set to make an even greater impact on the South Afri can market when an expanded range goes on sale locally in November this year. With Job 1 for Everest production com mencing today at the worldclass Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria, it signals the start of a new era for Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) as it now be comes a twovehicle assembly facility that also produces the Ranger for export to 148 markets in Africa, the Middle East and Eu rope. “The start of local production for the Ford Everest is another major milestone for

FMCSA’s Manufacturing division in imple menting Ford’s Global Facility and Process Standards,” says Ockert Berry, VP Opera tions. We are confident that the locally pro duced Ford Everest will deliver outstanding results for us, our employees and, most im portantly, our customers,” said Berry. The Everest will be produced for the South African market, and exported to countries across SubSaharan Africa. This follows a combined R2.5billion in vestment in Ford’s local operations for the Everest and Ranger programmes, creating approximately 1 200 new jobs at Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA), and within its supplier network.

“The Ford Everest has been a very popular addition to our local lineup, but thus far has only been available in the two highspecification 4x4 models which were fully imported from Thai land,” says Tracey Delate, General Mar keting Manager, FMCSA. “Local production has now enabled us to expand the offering with an additional six model derivatives, two engine choices, three trim levels, the option of manual and automatic transmissions, as well as two and fourwheel drive versions. “The addition of the 2.2 TDCi XLS and XLT models in particular will appeal to fam ily and lifestyle buyers, offering exceptional value for money matched to an outstand ing level of standard safety features, smart technologies and proven allterrain capa bility,” Delate adds. While the mighty 147kW 3.2litre Dura torq TDCi engine remains at the pinnacle of

The new Ford Everest. the range for this capable and versatile sev enseater SUV, the revised Everest lineup will be enhanced with the refined and eco nomical 2.2litre Duratorq TDCi engine also found in the Ranger. It produces 118kW and 385Nm of torque, and can be specified with a manual or automatic gearbox. Along with the existing 3.2 TDCi Auto matic fourwheel drive derivatives – in XLT and Limited specification levels – a third 4x4 model is set to join the mix in the form of the 2.2 TDCi XLS, equipped with a six

speed manual transmission. Five allnew twowheel drive Everest models will join the lineup for the first time. This includes a total of four 2.2 TDCi ver sions in a choice of either manual or auto matic, as well as the option of the midlevel XLS trim or the luxuriously appointed XLT. Topping the 4x2 range is a new 3.2 TDCi XLT Automatic. Full details on the expanded Ford Ever est lineup will be announced at launch. Supplied.
