A number of reasons to celebrate

This week ONLINE

MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

Bus driver SHOT DEAD while driving GRAHAM BARCLAY A PUBLIC bus driver was shot and killed as he was transporting about 30 passengers from Tongaat to Umhlanga on the Watson Highway on Friday morning. The 44-year-old Tongaat Circle bus driver, Zakhe Gumede was shot twice at close range by one of his passengers in his right upper arm and the left side of his jaw, resulting in his death. According to IPSS Medical Rescue paramedic Paul Herbst, the driver then lost control of the vehicle and the bus crashed down a small embankment. “We transported a number of patients to hospital after they sustained minor injuries in the crash, but the driver was, unfortunately, declared dead by our advanced life support paramedic due to his extensive injuries,” said Herbst. Tongaat SAPS detective Warrant Officer Pillay, who is leading the murder investigation, said a man dressed in overalls with the word “Frimax” written on the back entered the bus at the Shell garage in Tongaat before the bus continued its route on the Watson Highway. “A witness who was getting off the bus in Westbrook said he overhead the suspect demanding money from the driver as he disembarked the bus. Shortly afterwards, two gunshots went off and the driver was killed at the scene,” said Pillay. He added that no arrests have yet been made, but police are doing their best to identify the suspect and bring him to justice. Hambanathi resident and mother of two, Joyce Mhlope, who is reliant on public transport to get to and from work every day, said many people are tired of the dangerous conditions in which they are forced to travel. “It is so sad that something like this has happened. We are all just trying to live our lives and work to provide for our families, and a shooting like this makes me scared to travel, or to put my children on the bus or in a taxi,” said Mhlope, who added that violent crime is a serious problem in the area.

Thalia Nair thanked Sembcorp Siza Water for the opportunity and said: “A lot of my peers want to study but do not have finances to do so, and I am happy to have been given an opportunity to have a brighter future.” Thabiso Msweli hopes to become helpful in his community. He expressed his gratitude and said the bursary lifted a great weight off the shoulders of his family, who were no longer able to pay for his studies. Worker crushed by granite slab was not trained, wasn’t wearing protective gear investigation reveals AMANDA KHOZA, NEWS24 A WORKER killed when a granite slab fell on him was not trained and was not wearing protective clothing, a preliminary labour department investigation has revealed. Police opened an inquest docket at the Verulam police station after Mthokozisi Ngcwangula (30) died at Katzstone Granite and Quartz on Friday, Major Shooz Magudulela said. Two other men were injured. Labour department spokesperson Masede Mosima said on Tuesday that according to their preliminary investigation, three employees and the company’s owner had been moving granite slabs in a container around 3.30pm on Friday. While removing the last batch, a

piece of granite fell, causing the rest to fall and strike the workers, including the company’s owner. "One of the workers was trapped underneath the granite and, due to the weight, he died," Mosima said in a statement. A preliminary investigation by the department's labour inspectors found Ngcwangula had not been trained. "A risk assessment was not conducted, precautionary measures were not determined, and personal protective equipment was not issued to the workers." Mosima said the incident was being investigated in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Analysis shows positive impact >> Cornubia development construction phase one alone will contribute about R8,5 billion to the economy

A

RECENT analysis conducted by KPMG to determine the economic and financial viability of the Cornubia development north of Durban shows that it holds unquestionable benefit to the city, its people and the economy. The proposed mixed-use development has been earmarked as a strategic project that will have a significant impact on the social, economic and industrial prospects of the region. These prospects have now been quantified following the cost benefit and macroeconomic impact analysis conducted by the accounting and auditing firm. Appointed by the eThekwini Municipality, KPMG was tasked with determining if the project represents a sound investment or decision, as well as providing a basis for comparing projects on the basis of their costs relative to their benefits. The Cornubia analysis indicates an overwhelmingly positive outcome from the development for the eThekwini Municipality, local communities, and the regional and provincial economies. “As important as the economic and financial considerations are, the Cornubia development is regarded as a catalytic intervention undertaken jointly by the eThekwini Municipality and Tongaat Hulett Developments to establish the first fully integrated human settlement in the country,” says Denny Thaver, Project Manager at eThekwini Municipality. The development has a large impact on job creation in eThekwini during both the construction and operational phases. In the long term, nearly 285 000 new employment opportunities will be created due to the commercial activities associated with Cornubia, representing a healthy 12% of total employment in the province. This will be achieved through 39 000 direct jobs, 144 000 indirect jobs, and an additional 45 000 jobs in the rest of the province, as well as 54 000 jobs resulting from the economic impact of salaries and wages paid to employees at the development. These jobs exclude the 250 000 employment opportunities expected to be created during the

construction phase of Cornubia, representing 20% of the total employment in eThekwini (over a 20-year period). This phase of the project will pump as much as R700 million into lower income households through job creation opportunities, which nearly doubles to R1.3 billion in income for these households during the operational phase of the development. The construction phase alone will also contribute roughly R8.5 billion to the economy of eThekwini, representing 4% of the local economy’s GDP. Once operational, Cornubia will contribute approximately R3.3 billion directly to the local economy, with the provincial GDP being boosted by an estimated R1.2 billion. “Over the 20-year period the Cornubia project will not only change the economic landscape of the city, but will deliver significant socio-economic benefits to the region, province and national economy,” comments Karen Petersen, Development Director at Tongaat Hulett Developments. “The target, as set out in the National Development Plan is to increase South Africa’s economic growth to 5.4% on average in real terms by 2030. The total impact of the Cornubia development will contribute about 10% (i.e. R3.3 billion) to eThekwini’s GDP, and 5% to the provincial economy’s GDP of R22.9 billion with Tongaat Hulett Developments creating the largest impact by contributing R9.4 billion to both the local and provincial economy’s GDPs. Nationally, the Cornubia development will contribute 2% (R50.4 billion) to the South African GDP.” The development will contribute to poverty alleviation through its impact on household income. The social accounting matrix indicated that through downstream generation of income, households in the eThekwini Municipality will receive about R8.9 billion, R1.4 billion of which will be received by lower income households alone. The analysis by KPMG also shows that the eThekwini Municipality’s investment in this 1 200ha development is not only sound, but is a financially prudent initiative that will change the face of the region. This conclusion is drawn from the costbenefit analysis, which shows that the municipality alone stands to benefit to the tune of more than R4 billion as a result of the Cornubia development. The regional Reg. No: 20141093523/07 VAT No: 4650268487 council’s internal rate of return – which Suppliers of Water Tanks, HDPE Pipes, LDPE Pipes, measures the profitaPVC Pipes, Concrete Pipes, Polycop Pipes, Fittings bility of an investment – is 31% (three times and Butt Welding Machines, Shop / Site Welds the discount rate of 11%), which demonstrates the strong financial justification for undertaking the development. 1000lt R1 690.00 “Apart from the di2000lt R2 050.00 rect economic stimulus provided by the 2500lt R2 450.00 Cornubia develop5000lt R3 890.00 ment, the social impact from the con10000lt R10 250.00 struction of affordable, subsidised and public sector housing units will go a long way to improving the quality of living for local residents. Coupled with the job opportunities that are being created, the overall impact on the prospects and attractiveness of eThekwini will be significantly improved,” concludes Thaver. - Supplied.

Surviving the claws of debt VALENE GOVENDER

T

HE interest rate, hidden costs and VAT are things I never really took seriously until I was forced to grow up and learn to handle my finances wisely. And by wisely, I mean avoiding drowning in a pool of debt - which was heading in my direction like a tidal wave. Five years ago, at the age of 30, I was financially comfortably. As a married “dink” (double income, no kids) life was pretty comfortable. My husband took care of all things serious rent, utility bills and fuel - while I took care of the luxuries - food, clothing, holidays, etc. We really had no serious responsibilities so we had no need for extra credit, basically we lived within our means. Fast-forward two years. We were ready to buy a home as we were fed up with dealing with landlords, and finally decided to apply for our first major loan - a home loan. At this point we had a few retail ac-

We made an informed de cision not to become a sta tistic, and to grow up, fast. counts, but only used them when we needed to, which was about five times a year. At some time during this stage, I discovered internet shopping (I dislike shopping malls - trying on clothing and following queues is not my thing) and my husband fell in love with big name branded clothing. His taste has always been “expensive”, but he took that taste to a whole new level. We reached a point where spending R1 000 on a shirt meant nothing and I used to buy arbitrary items on the internet, well just because I could. I didn’t budget for the extra costs that came with owning a home and this was an added expense which I impetuously charged to a credit card - for the record I had four credit cards with huge credit limits. I have never not paid my debts so my credit limit continued to increase

annually and I continued to pile on the credit. In 2015, my husband and I decided to sit down and talk finances - in our 10 years of marriage we never did this. There is some statistic somewhere that stuck in my mind - apparently more than 60% of marriages in South Africa break up due to financial problems. We made an informed decision not to become a statistic, and to grow up, fast. At this point we decided to conduct a “fiscal cleanse”. Basically we said we will not buy anything new (food included) until we’ve used or eaten everything we had in our cupboard and freezer. I was patting myself on the back for being this wise and I went around sharing with friends and family how smart I had become. At the end of the week, the pat on the back became a kick. I discovered bags of unused, brandnew clothing at the bottom of my wardrobe, I discovered expired food at the back of my grocery cupboard and after

The only cards in my wallet at the moment. putting pen to paper, I realised I was so heavy in debt that our combined salaries were not covering the basics. Swiping credit cards became the norm so I was recklessly using it, even when I didn’t need to - like buying a R10 item at a service station. I put myself in a position where I was now swiping my credit card to pay

my bills - and this is when I decided that enough was enough. My husband and I were speechless when we wrote our debt down on paper - it made it official - we were financially drowning. We made a united decision to close every account and enter into the debt consolidation process. And I swear I suffered withdrawal symptoms during the first month. I could not walk into a store without panicking because I was not able to randomly choose products without worrying about the price. So I avoided all shops. I felt unstable without the credit cards in my wallet. A year later, I am comfortable once again. I still get really angry at myself for being foolish, but I can see how easy it is to get caught in a debt hurricane. I am grateful for my life partner who has held my hand through the difficult times and always provided encouragement. If you are going through something similar, talk about it to someone - anyone - because there is help and it is not hard to find. Sometimes the voice of reason can come from a loved one. So now, when base points and interest rate comes up on the news, I throw my hands in the air and curse the government because I know what it means to my budget.

The importance of medical gap cover Juggie Govender of East Coast Finan cial Services (Pty) Ltd – FSP: 44760 DID YOU KNOW? Most medical schemes only cover the costs of in-hospital specialist treatments, at the Medical Aid Tariff (100% or 200%). THE PROBLEM… Most specialists charge substantially more than the Medical Aid Tariff, for example, anywhere between 200% and 350% and thus leaving the member liable for the shortfall. Other costs that a member can be liable for: ·co-payments on selected procedures or services for example MRI/CT scans; ·hospital admission co-payments;

and ·co-payments as a result of sub limits being exceeded ·co-payments for the usage of a non-network hospital THE SOLUTION…MEDICAL GAP COVER What is GAP Cover you ask? Medical GAP Cover covers the shortfall between what the medical aid pays (tariff) and what the specialists charge, up to 500%. Some GAP Covers may also cover the specialist shortfalls arising from a defined list of out patient procedures. Hospital admission co-payments, MRI/CT co-payments and claims for the usage of a non-network hospital may also be covered by GAP Cover, depending on the benefit option the client has selected.

T six years of age Brady Luke Pillay is fighting the stigma of autism by defining his success through achievements - big and small. Brady was born at Alberlito Hospital in Ballito at 36 weeks into his mother’s pregnancy. He was delivered after his mother under went an emergency caesarean section because doctors noticed he had a high heart rate when monitored at the hospital. In his mother Abidah Pillay words I first noticed that something was different about Brady because he never looked at anyone. He would only look up with no eye contact. He didn’t meet the conventional walking and talking milestones like other children his age and never used language to communicate. He ran about aimlessly and became obsessed with his toy cars, lining them up and playing only with them the entire day. He didn’t want to go to new places or meet new people in the first two years of his life. I was told he would “come around”, but as a mother I knew something was amiss.

CONTRACTED TO ALL MEDICAL AIDS

METRO ELECTRICAL AND GENERAL

I took him from doctor to doctor, paediatrician to paediatrician, he had scans and tests done, but nothing showed up. We had no answers, only more questions. At just under two Brady was referred to Dr Anthony Clucheny at St Augustine’s Hospital, a paediatric neurologist who diagnosed him with PDD-NOS (pervasive development disorder), also called atypical autism. Finally there was an answer, a reason, but also a label and a darkness and sorrow. The thought that went through my mind was I need a second opinion and there was one and a third and a fourth all with the same conclusion - Brady had autism. I knew help was needed, but for who - Brady or myself? When I got that answer my child began to progress. For the first two years after the diagnosis my teaching him and taking him for therapy was not to help him, but change him. My realisation was I shouldn’t change my child with autism to suit me or people, I should change my views, my vision and my mindset so I could see the world through his eyes - his difficulties, his progress and through his achievements. When that realisation set in, only then did the doors to his progress and happiness open. Brady is now six and he can speak English and Zulu.

Brady and Brandon can now go to school to gether and Brady does not exhibit antisocial behaviour. He hugs, kisses and smiles and now orders his siblings and family to look at him when he talks to them. This is not autistic behaviour, it is his achievement. He now has developed great imaginative, communication and social skills and is doing well at school. He has a wonderful relationship with his big brother and little sister and is determined to gain success looking past his difficulties. This is a child who was told he would be nonverbal, anti-social, dependant and difficult, yet he has blossomed into a precious, inspiring light for all autistic children. Yes, Brady does face difficulties, but with love and support from his parents and close family he is determined to find his way through life. Message for parents As a parent, it is the most difficult news to hear that your child has autism or other challenges, but with faith and perseverance and more, especially love, we can get them through anything. Autistic children don’t only need their family behind them they also need every member in society to understand and motivate them through their difficulties. As a community let’s work together to give all our children with difficulties and challenges the motivation and support they need in order for them to achieve success and reach their goals. - Supplied.

ETCARE Alberlito Hospital, the King Shaka International Airport and Lifestyle Shopping Centre joined the Connect Special Needs and Autism Forum of the Imbalito Hope Col lege to light up blue to show support for World Autism Day 2016. This year marks the 7th annual “light it up blue” autism awareness campaign where more than 3000 iconic buildings

and landmarks in over 50 countries on six continents turn their lights blue for world autism awareness. The Connect Special Needs and Au tism Forum has been at the forefront of raising awareness for autism over the past decade. “We need to do more so that parents and the society as a whole get to know more about autism.

“We are very grateful to our communi ty partners for their ongoing support and getting the message out there,” said Nirasha Dhaniram, psychologist and di rector of Connect Special Needs. Lifestyle Centre manager Mark Pearse, Netcare Alberlito Hospital manager Sara Nayaga and ACSA representatives Colin Naidoo and Terence Delomoney said that the Connect Forum and Imbalito Hope

College are doing great work in raising awareness about autism and they fully supported the cause. It is important to note that one in 68 in the U.S. and one in 88 in South Africa, at least 300 000, have autism. Autism is prevalent four to five times more in boys than in girls. The United Nations declared 2 April World Autism Day to highlight the need to

help improve the quality of life with those with autism. For more information on special needs and autism treatments and education contact Nirasha Dhaniram on 032 586 0200 or visit www.connectspe cialneeds. co.za or Facebook Imbalito Hope College. Supplied.

weeklywheels Top selling bakkies in SA: Hilux reclaims top spot B

ARELY a month after its local launch, the new Toyota Hilux reclaimed its spot as the best-selling bakkie in SA. Pre-orders for the Hilux were more than a thousand units ahead of launch and according to the latest Naamsa sales figures, a total of 3273 new Hilux units were sold in March. More than 60% (2000 units) were double cabs. Top sellers in SA The Ford Ranger has been a consistent top seller for the past year even trumping the previous-generation Hilux on many occasions. The new Hilux however, given its history in SA, could maintain the top spot for many years to come. In March 2016, 3004 Ranger bakkies were sold followed by the Nissan NP200 (1341 units) and the Isuzu KB (1042). The top 10 best-selling bakkies for March: 1. Toyota Hilux - 3273 units 2. ICC could include more sides at next WT20 INTERNATIONAL Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive Dave Richardson has hinted that the next World T20, taking place in Australia in 2020, could have more Associate sides involved. The recently concluded World T20 in India was played in two phases with eight Associate sides joining Zimbabwe and Bangladesh in the first round group stage which saw two pools of four. Afghanistan and Bangladesh were the two teams that advanced to the Super 10 stage of the tournament joining the top eight ranked sides in the world. The ICC has come in for criticism, especially from the Associate nations, that they are not included with the bigger teams at major events and Richardson said the current format could see one or teams added. Richardson told *Cricket Radio* in an interview: "I think the format itself works. Whether we promoted those first round matches well enough, that's a question we need to answer at a later stage and review it. "The format has worked in that all the matches, first round and second round, it's designed to create even contests between the teams and to that extent it's worked exceptionally well. "Whether we move to perhaps increasing the size of the tournament by adding one or two teams, or one team to each group in that first round, I think if we can do that number one we'll provide more opportunities to other teams but number two, if you do lose two matches you've still got a chance in a group of five whereas in a group of four, you're dead and buried. "That might be useful and then even maybe increasing, instead of having a Super 10 have a Super 12 maybe which will again increase the number of matches but I think it will give more opportunities for the Associate members to participate in the second round of the tournament itself." - Sport24

ONGAAT’S top karate tournament fighter Yashveer Jugoo narrowly missed gold after losing a thrilling final at the recent SA Universities (USSA) championships held at Potchefstroom University recently. The DUT student Yashveer, who achieved his Protea colours in 2015, settled for silver, which qualifies him to participate in the Universities World Cup 2016 in Portugal later in the year. “Yashveer is a dedicated karateka whose hard work in daily karate practice is paying dividends hence I am confident he will be crowned world universities champion in Portugal,” said Pro-

tea head coach Brando Pillay who personally mentors Yashveer. “I am aiming high for 2016 and will make the rainbow nation proud,” said Yashveer, who is also an assistant instructor at the SKISA Tongaat karate club based at the Tongaat Sports Centre under the guidance of South Africa’s karate legend Hanshi Sonny Pillay. “I am very impressed with the discipline and conduct of Yashveer,” said Hanshi Pillay who serves as the president of KSA the national governing body for karate in South Africa. “Moreover, Yashveer serves as an excellent role model for the youth of today given his huge suc-

Lambie back on the training field SHARKS flyhalf Pat Lambie is back on the training field as he continues his recovery from a shoulder injury. Lambie suffered the injury in a pre-season outing against French side Toulon in early February. He was forced to go under the knife and was ruled out for three months in mid-February. However, Sharks and Springbok fans will be happy to see the pivot has returned to the training field as he continues with his recovery. Lambie will still be in a race against time to be fit for the Springboks’ three-Test series against Ireland in June. He was spotted at Sharks training this week, with the Sharks on Tuesday posting a picture via their official Facebook page. - Sport24.
