A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime

continues to destroy some of our communities. However, the one thing that continues to stand undefeated is the spirit of the Upper Highway community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

own challenges this year, but as we enter 2015 we renew our pledge to you to do our very best to continue to be the most accurate, fair and balanced source of news, opinion, features, sports and entertainment in the Upper Highway Area. We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. Kalisha Naicker Senior Journalist Hillcrest Fever

The second team, led by Warrant Officer Kelvin Moodley, bust a house robbery syndicate in Oaklands. Thabiso Mofokeng (30), was sentenced to 10 years’ at the Verulam Regional court on 20 July. Moodley told the Weekly that his team had worked relentlessly since last year following information that led to the arrest of the suspect. “We worked days and nights looking for the suspect throughout the province. “We received a tip-off from our sources about his whereabouts and he was arrested and charged with house robbery,” he said. WO teams of detectives investigating serious cases in the north of Durban were applauded for a major breakthrough in a murder and armed robbery case that happened last year. The two teams, led by Warrant Officers Anesh Haridhan and Kelvin Moodley stationed at Verulam police station, have worked tirelessly since last year chasing leads in the murder and house robbery cases. The first team, led by Haridhan, arrested Adolphas Ngcobo (28) last year for murder. Ngcobo was sentenced to 17 years imprisonment at Verulam Regional court last week for the murder of Khanyisile Mankunsa (29), a Redcliffe resident who was stabbed to death at her house in September 2015. Verulam Community Policing Forum launched its website in a bid to weed out criminal activities in the north of Durban. The website has numbers that will assist the community in case of an emergency. Chairperson of Verulam Community Policing Forum Duncan Dube said the website will help develop proper communication between the police, CPF members and the community. He further urged residents to play a pivotal role in the fight against crime. “We urge the community to participate in meetings and projects organised by the CPF in their respective sectors. “We are optimistic that working together can make Verulam a much safer place in which to liv,” he said. North Coast residents encouraged to protect indigenous trees

WEEKLY

ANDILE SITHOLE

N

ATIONAL Arbor week is a seven-day initiative aimed at promoting awareness on nature conservation and to encourage residents to plant trees in their communities. The Tongaat community and pupils from various schools met at V. Moonsamy Hall in Buffesdale on Tuesday, 6 September for a tree-planting ceremony to celebrate National Arbor Week. Guests from various organisations urged the community to protect indigenous trees. Every year the Keep Tongaat Beautiful Association, in conjunction with eThekwini Municipality, donates trees during Arbor Week to encourage the community to protect indigenous plants. Deputy chairperson of Keep Tongaat, Bala Moonsamy, said: “This year we were unable to donate trees due to the drought. “However, throughout September we will be planting trees and encouraging our community to do the same,” he said. Silverdale Primary principal, Robin Maharaj, supported the initiative of planting indigenous trees. Maharaj advised the community

to heed the call by the national Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to conserve indigenous trees in South Africa. “We have to start planting trees in our communities and we have to find methods about how we can save water. “Working together we can take this country far and support the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in its endeavour to maintain and protect indigenous trees. “The intention of Arbor Week is to promote awareness about the need to plant trees throughout the country,” he said. The day culminated with speeches by Tongaat primary and secondary school pupils, with them promising to preserve nature.

Residents raise awareness about women abuse ANDILE SITHOLE

Members of the community gathered outside the Tongaat Sizakala Centre during a march to raise awareness on women and children abuse.

N 4 September, Hambanathi residents marched to the Tongaat Sizakala Centre to raise awareness about women and children abuse and to educate the public about issues relating to abuse. Residents of Ward 62 gathered at Hambanathi sports ground in the morning and marched to the Tongaat CBD, chanting slogans. The march came after a woman was found dead outside her home last month. Chairperson of Community Policing Fo-

rum, Anthony Gumede, said residents wanted to raise concerns after a woman was raped and murdered in Hambanathi last month. Tongaat SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer

Manisha Maharaj-Marie said: “It was a peaceful march. The officials addressed residents outside the Tongaat Sizakala Centre and they dispersed peacefully,” she said.

VER the past 30 months persistent below-average rainfall has been recorded at the Hazelmere Dam and its catchments as a result of the El Nino phenomenon resulting in major water restrictions in all of the Umgeni Water supply areas. However, in July and August, consistent with the El Niñoeffect, unseasonal rainfall was recorded at Hazelmere Dam. According to Umgeni Water’s corporate stakeholder manager Shami Harichunder it amounted to a total of approximately 180mm. This resulted in the level of the dam rising steadily to its current 62%. “There is, at this stage, adequate water to meet the demands of eThekwini Metro, Sembcorp Siza Water and iLembe District Municipality, at volumes that were provided before the onset of water shortages and implementation water restrictions,” said Harichunder. “Following a risk analysis that discounted the possibility of dam failure in the foreseeable future, a decision has now been taken by the Joint Operations Committee that the normal operating rules can be reinstated as a result of the improved situation.” This means all drought curtailment targets will be withdrawn and normal water production will occur at Hazelmere Waterworks and the plant will revert to supplying volumes of potable water that will meet the full demands of its customers. Sembcorp Siza Water will be lifting all water restrictions within its water service area, which includes Ballito. The company thanked its customers for their proactive adherence to the water restrictions and for partnering with it in ensuring that water use was within the daily rationed quota. Harichunder added that the Gazetted restrictions for the Hazelmere Water Treatment Plant supply area (north of eThekwini and parts of iLembe) that made these restrictions mandatory are to be amended by the Department of Water and Sanitation. Harichunder said the recent rains and increased water resource availability have contributed significantly in assisting Umgeni Water, eThekwini Metro, iLembe District Municipality and Sembcorp Siza Water emerge from a difficult situation. “A great deal of hardship and inconvenience were felt by consumers and providers of water services, but the strategies implemented were imperative to prevent large scale acute water shortages and the possibility of Hazelmere Dam drying up. “We thank consumers – domestic, business, industry and government – for their tolerance and patience. Their ability to adapt to a changed situation is greatly admired and appreciated,” Harichunder said. Harichunder said while production of potable water will gradually progress to pre-drought levels, constant monitoring of raw water resource availability by the Joint Operations Committee will continue. “If the level of Hazelmere Dam falls sharply and if spring and summer rains do not materialise, the issue of re-imposition of production cuts and accompanying restrictions will be examined again in order prevent a crisis situation occurring. “It is, therefore, important that consumers continue to use water sparingly and also report incidences of wastage and leaks to their municipality.”

8 WEEKLY Joint initiative to help the needy coastal

T

HE Tongaat South Vishnu Temple (TSVT), Continental Funeral Services of Tongaat, the Buffelsdale Primary Soul Buddyz Club and the Tongaat Hindu unity Forum formed a partnership and launched an initiative to help the indigent in the community. The TSVT currently provides meals to schools and the community regularly as well as much-needed yeomen services over the years. The project was launched after a Buffelsdale Primary pupil died and the family needed support. The Soul Buddyz, the school and TSVT rallied sup-

port for the family. Sonalia Govender, a member of the Soul Buddyz Club, said that they identified a need to provide a dignified funeral for many people in the community who could not manage to financially support themselves. The club initiated the process to make this a reality. They consulted and thereafter formed a partnership with the relevant stakeholders. The chairperson of the Tongaat Hindu Unity Forum, Sri Vedananda, said at the launch on Saturday at the Tongaat South Vishnu Temple that the forum is in negotiations with relevant

stakeholders to make this service accessible to as many individuals and families in their communities. The programme identifies indigent families, pays for a funeral policy which ensures some dignity for the person’s loved ones in the eventuality of a death. “We extend our appreciation to Continental Funeral Services who presently, besides a low premium, are also subsidising a portion of that premium making this an extremely affordable service,” he said. “The programme was launched with two families, but with interest

the frontier of two eras - the feudal order was in full force in his homeland. Ettayapuram had a palace surrounded by huts. Age old castes were still in power. Maha Kavi Bharathiar was a Brahmin by birth, but side by side with feudalism and Sanathanic order of socie-

ty, modernism was peeping in. Industrial revolution was dawning, the old order met the new with sorrowful eyes, and there was a challenge in the look of the new era. Bharati was born during this period and no one could have imagined that he will become a warrior in the duel between the old order and the new. He was born in an era were arrogance and humility, cruelty and kindness marched together, where there was energy in abundance and absurd contemplation strong enough to dissipate the energy. He was born in a land of

some dazzling ideas and millions of mute people, a land where there was apoplexy at the centre and anaemia at the extremes, a land of courage as well as fear, the Land of faith as well as despair. The booming of the gun became familiar to the ears of the people and the age long Temple Drum was not silent in such a land of paradoxes and perplexities. Baharathi’s claim to greatness rests chiefly on this: he gave the push as the people’s poet. Maha Kavi Bharathiar was not merely the bard of nationalisation. He was certainly the morning star of reformation only because he was the people’s Poet. He wanted to free his countrymen from all shackles, wanted them to rise up in the estimation of the world, wanted to see a new land peopled by men and women of a brand-new type altogether. He found the people enveloped in fear. They were afraid of anything and everything.

Not only did they fear the foreigner and the gun, but their own countrymen. Such people cannot become the stand of bearers of freedom and a land peopled by such nature. Hence, Bharati wanted to drive the fear out of his countrymen. He knew very well that this was the era of democracy and he wanted people to fight for freedom. He did not deliver mere devotional hymns or send poetic appeals to the princes of the land, he addressed the common man, women and children. As the people’s poet it was his duty to unmask negativity and hypocrisy wherever it was found, and he accomplished that with courage and enthusiasm. Join the Verulam Cultural Co-ordinating Committee for songs in praise and discourses on Maha Kavi Bharathiar on Sunday 11 September at 7.45am for 8am at the Centenary Hall, 6 Temple Road, Umdloti Drift, Verulam.

Estate planning Wills BY JUGGIE GOVENDER OF EAST COAST FINANCIAL SERVICES (PTY) LTD – FSP 44760 A LAST Will and Testament is the legal document by which you identify those individuals (or charities) that are to receive your property and possessions on your death. These individuals and charities are commonly referred to as the heirs or beneficiaries under your Last Will and Testament. Here are some guidelines regarding Wills: 1. Review/update your Will: Having a Will is the cornerstone of any estate plan. Why is it devastating not to have a Will if you have minor children? Once you have a Will, it is important to review it regularly, and also to ensure that your family know where to find your Will when you aren’t around. 2. Appointing guardians for minor children:

This issue is often overlooked by parents, especially as a surviving parent remains guardian in the event of the death of the other parent. However, couples should always stipulate a guardian for their children to cover the eventuality of their simultaneous death. Your nominated guardian should be stipulated in your Will. 3. Review beneficiaries: As your family situation changes over the course of a lifetime, you may need to change the names of beneficiaries not only in your Will, but also in life insurance policies and other documents that list beneficiaries and group life funds. 4. Appointing trustees for minor children: Trustees should not be confused with guardians. Trustees are appointed in a Will to administer monies inherited by young children, or heirs who are not capable of doing so. Guardians look after and care for mi-

Such bravery is rare A13-YEAR-OLD schoolgirl showed more courage and leadership this week than South Africa’s contingent of elected leaders. Zulaikha Patel was at the forefront of a protest at Pretoria High School for Girls against a policy that prevented pupils from wearing their hair naturally. The protest drew attention to the discrimination and ridicule of black girls at various schools around the country, including racial slurs. School policies prescribing that pupils’ hair should be “neat” require them to straighten or braid their hair, which exposes them to harmful chemicals and can be painful. In enforcing these policies, it has now emerged that some teachers taunt and insult young girls, including calling them “monkeys”. Zulaikha’s refusal to conform to unfair and discriminatory policies allowed other children to speak about their own hurtful experiences and forced the intervention and scrutiny of

school policies by the Department of Education. For a 13-year-old who has faced punishment over her hair in the past and has often been brought to tears because of the insults she had to endure, Zulaikha displayed enviable courage to stand up for her rights. Such bravery is hard to find in our society. There are many members of the ANC who are increasingly anxious about the state of decay of their organisation and the political leadership that continues to plunge the country into crisis after crisis. But they choose not to speak up. In the past week, the rand took another hammering after it emerged that the Hawks are again pursuing Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan on charges related to the operation of a special intelligence unit at the South African Revenue Service when he was commissioner. ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe said on Tuesday that the party has “unreserved confidence” in

nor children. The appointment of trustees is crucial for inheritances by minor children (i.e. under 18 years) as in the absence of provisions in a Will creating a Trust, a minor child’s cash inheritance must be paid over to the Master of the High Court’s Guardians Fund for safekeeping. This may not be the most practical way. 5. Donations: In terms of current legislation, a person is allowed to donate up to R100 000 each tax year, free of donations tax, to children, trusts or other persons. There is no limit on the amount that spouses may donate to one another tax free. By making donations, large estates can be reduced to avoid significant estate taxes. Organ Donation: You may want to donate your organs to save someone’s life. You can contact Organ Donation foundation and register as a donor. 6. Liquidity: One of the most common problems

in winding up an estate is the situation where there is not sufficient cash to settle the estate’s liabilities, such as mortgage bonds, vehicle finance, taxes and winding-up costs such as executor’s fees and conveyancing costs. In such a situation the outcome can be a forced sale of assets (such as the family home). Life insurance is an easy and affordable way to provide estate liquidity. 7. Estate taxes: There are various ways to limit the taxes payable on your estate (such as estate duty and capital gains tax), depending on the size of your estate and your family situation. It is worth-while to discuss the options with your financial advisor. 8. Offshore assets: If you should have offshore assets when you die, you’ll also have a foreign estate that will have to be administered. Each country has its own legislation dealing with inheritance and the signing of Wills. Your South African Will won’t necessarily meet with the legal requirements of the country where your assets are situated. A solution is to execute a separate Will in the foreign jurisdiction dealing only with

Gordhan. He said the Hawks’ investigation is “unnatural” and was “delegitimised” by the way it had been conducting it. But despite the economic turmoil resulting from this investigation, the ANC continues to sit back and watch the chaos unfold. It has also repeatedly resolved at various high-level meetings that there should be reform and stability at state-owned enterprises (SOEs). Yet this week we saw more running battles between National Treasury and Eskom and Denel. Both companies seem to be fighting off attempts by the Treasury to scrutinise their contracts with companies linked to the Gupta family. On Thursday, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa was answering questions in Parliament and had the opportunity to pronounce himself on all these issues causing economic instability. He was also speaking in the wake of an announcement by asset manager Futuregrowth to suspend loans to state-owned enterprises due to uncertainty about how they are being run.

Futuregrowth said it will proceed with financing SOEs only when “proper oversight and governance” have been restored. Denmark’s Jyske Bank followed suit, saying it will stop lending money to Eskom. Ramaphosa avoided speaking clearly on these issues, even when asked about the government effectively being at war with itself. He said those making “sensational statements” should refrain from exacerbating the situation and that processes were under way that will “put the matter to bed”. “We are taking all measures possible to ensure economic growth,” Ramaphosa said. You would struggle to find more woolly statements at a time when people are searching for strong leadership and clear direction. Such statements could hardly serve to calm investor and financier jitters about the state of the country. Last weekend, the Guptas announced that they will be selling their shareholding in all their SA businesses. While this is to be welcomed, there is no indication that their stranglehold on people in the ANC and the state has

as I felt the need to address negative impacts of word of mouth that could scar an institution’s reputation. On my arrival after a 13-year academic progression outside the province of KwaZulu-Natal, I was astounded by the declining state of the schooling system, not only in my former province, but throughout the country. I made it my duty as a parent to become actively involved in the school that my child was to attend. At first, due to hearsay, the thought of placing my child at Buffelsdale Secondary was a big NO. I then decided to enroll my daughter, being a high achiever in her primary school years, at another notably recognised secondary school not far from the area I reside. The look on my daughter’s face after just two days at the school left my heart shattered. Upon requesting the reasons for this look, she opened up and said: “Dad, the school is not user-friendly”. She further iterated that one has to be comfortable in the environment in or-

der to study and achieve the most. I then asked her which school she wanted to be placed in, to which she responded, Buffelsdale Secondary, which took me by surprise. Furthermore, she stated, knowing my initial attitude of the school, “Dad, it’s not the school that makes a good student, it’s the students themselves”. Quite mature for a 13-year-old I must admit. I immediately enrolled her at Buffelsdale Secondary and at the same time undertook some research on the quality of teaching at the school. I was surprised to find out that the school has some of the best teachers around with appropriate qualifications, some of whom equals or even surpasses teachers of private institutions. The appointed principal, Dr. Singh has dedicated and pledged to enhance the school’s academic outputs and at the same time promote other extramural activities. This being the case and I being staunched for academic progression made myself available to assist in the

those assets. It might be advisable to have a separate Will for your offshore property. 9. Record-keeping: It is a traumatic time for the surviving family when someone passes away. This trauma can be exacerbated when your loved ones cannot find important documents, keys to safety deposit boxes, financial statements and other necessary information. It is essential to create a list of where all-important information can be located and give the list to someone you trust. Please contact your attorney for further information. You could also contact me on 083 399 3905, my office on 032944 3051 or email me on juggieg@telkom sa.net for an appointment for further advice. school and became part of the governing body. The school has a proven track record of taking the poorest performing students from primary school levels and bringing them to complete their matric with many attending tertiary institutions. This has a lot to do with the compassion and dedication of the teachers. What then can the very same school do with students who exit with a better pass mark from primary schools? I personally know many of the alumni of Buffelsdale Secondary that have become recognised in their respective fields and call upon them to come forth and make the school which provided them with the foundation as to who they are today, to assist in the marketing as well as promote the achievements of Buffelsdale secondary. Let us make a difference and grow better future leaders. Prof Roger M. Coopoosamy Current SGB Chairperson

Youth praise 1860 indentured labourers

HE legacy of the 1860 indentured labourers and unsung heroes who arrived at KwaZulu-Natal from India in 1860 to 1911 will always be remembered, said youth who attended a Youth Conference last week. The first Indian settlers who arrived in South Africa revived and injected new blood to the agricultural sector and to the economy of the country at large. These were the sentiments shared at the Youth Conference held at Dianthus Primary School in Verulam. Distinguished guests and pupils from different secondary schools in

Verulam shared a podium at the event and commended the magnificent contributions made by the indentured labourers of 1860 when they arrived in South Africa. Zahraa Moidir from Verulam Secondary School said unsung heroes such as George Sewpersadh were true sons of the struggle who strived and persevered to liberate South Africans. In her poem she cited Sewpersadh’s contribution that he made to South Africa’s history. “Comrade George was a true son of the struggle. The son of the indentured migrants, you emerged the freedom stalwart. The apartheid oppressors

failed to stripe your defined spirit. Comrade and legend of the struggle and a brilliant man of the law,” she said. A Verulam resident, Komilan Pather said the arrival of indentured labourers in KwaZulu-Natal brought life to the farming industry and to the economy at that time. “They were brought from Indian because they were needed to grow tobacco, vegetables and other agricultural products that made a great impact to the economy of the country. Despite living in poverty, they were persistent in improving their standard of living,” he said. Chairman of the 1860 Indentured Labourers Foundation Verulam Jaisingh Singh said the aim of the conference was to empower the youth and remind them about the history of indentured labourers. “The indentured labourers came to KwaZulu-Natal in 1860 to 1911. September being the heritage and history month, we wanted youth to give us their perceptions about the indentured labourers,” he said. Singh urged the youth to participate in the discussions in order to improve their knowledge on South African history. “I was impressed with one of the pupils from Dianthus Primary School who thanked our foundation for bringing honour to the school by arranging such a historic function. I also would like to thank our sponsor Deena Butchery in Verulam for making our function a success,” he said.

Participants were treated to cool drinks cosponsored by Refresh Cooldrinks and a Checkout sponsored medal for their morn ing’s effort.
