This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. HE Tongaat Child and Family Welfare Society (TCW) were given the national platform they deserve recently, when their tireless efforts in social work was celebrated by Child Welfare South Africa (CWSA) in their bi-monthly newsletter for April and May. A number of flagship projects undertaken by TCW received recognition in CWSA’s Vikelela Abantwana publication. The English translation of the newsletter’s name is ‘protect children’, which accurately describes the mission of staff at TCW, who were featured on the front page.
The feature included the NGO’s ‘Children’s Fund Breakfast Programme’, which sees that 2500 children are fed a meal every day. Other programmes that also received a special mention included the launching of the Teenagers Against Drug Abuse (TADA) initiative, which seeks to educate young people about the social and health risks that come with drug abuse and the annual principals meeting, which supports teachers in the local community. TCW’s Buffelsdale homework centre, Sarasvati homework centre and Truro homework and computer centre were also acknowledged as important social development programmes run by the NGO, which fo-
cus on personal growth through education. Harold Maistry, TCW president said that the feature in the national newsletter was a wonderful boost for the local NGO and a reminder of their commitment to social upliftment. “This truly was an excellent opportunity for us at TCW as it recognised and showcased our work and helped to put our organisation on the map as a leading social welfare service provider,” said Maistry. “The diligence and relative success with which we serve the most vulnerable in our community is due to the tireless support of our staff, patrons, volunteers, board of management and the wider Tongaat community. We could not do the work we do if it was not for your dedication,” he added.

Sadly, in the heat of the election battle and contestation for positions, candidates do not seem to be evaluated on the basis of how they intend to solve local problems. South Africa has among the highest rates of protest action in the world, with communities demonstrating over the delivery of basic services, houses and better living conditions. People have been angered by how their mayors and councillors have neglected their responsibilities and allowed services to degenerate. But it is not easy to hold these people accountaRANJENI MUNUSAMY ble, particularly if party dynamics and factional interests ensure that they keep their jobs. BEFORE we used clocks and watches to tell time, ancient man used to look to the stars to decide if it is time yet to plant or how much longer the night would last. Nowadays, we may be more ad vanced, thanks to technology, but we still have events that remind us of what happened in the past. For instance, I have a tiny scar on my leg, which I acquired on Sunday, March 22, 1992, when I was nine years old. How do I remember the date? Well, it was the day of that infamous rain interrupted World Cup semifinal at the Sydney Crick et Ground. You know, the one where SA had to score 22 runs off the last ball to win the game. The Proteas, in their first World Cup due to the end of isolation, fought hard through out the tournament, and since it was the first time we were watch ing that level of international crick et, we were not cynical. So, when the defeat was confirmed, I went outside, and out of anger, I inad vertently, or not, kicked a rose bush. It was a similar case during the following World Cup on the sub continent in 1996. The Proteas
started well, and, we lost. We lost again in 1999, and right here at home in 2003. And for each of those losses, there are certain things that remind me of these tiny traumas. In 2007, it was the same story, and in 2011, some of us didn’t even bother showing any enthusiasm, because even though we were one of the better sides leading up to the tournament, there was no hope in Hades that we were going to win that competition. Again, we were all hopeful, and euphoric about #ProteaFire last year, especially after captain AB’s display against the West Indies in Johannesburg. AB himself went on to promise us, the fans, that they would be coming back to South Af rica with the trophy. They did not bring back the tro phy. And, to make sure that we re member the last three World Cups, there are slips to remind us that for some reason, we decided to make stupid financial decisions that seemed absolutely logical should the Proteas have won. So poorly have our beloved Pro teas performed at international tournaments that the only trophy they’ve so far picked up has been
the ICC Champions Trophy they won in the competition’s inaugural year of 1998. On Wednesday, the draw for next year’s ICC Champions Trophy in England was made, and it pitted us up against India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. De Villiers has already fired off the customary warning to everyone, saying they’ll beat any one that comes across their path. Yeah, we believe you this time, AB. No, really, we do. Why? Because we’re Proteas fans, and like the Proteas fans that we are, we will always believe that our cricket team are invincible. It’s going to be a very busy time between now and then. Their sea son begins with a tour of the Carib bean, followed by an incoming se ries against New Zealand, a trip down under to face our Aussie foes, and then welcome the Sri Lankans here for a full tour, starting on Box ing Day, right up until just before Valentine’s Day. HE History of Father’s Day Festival as seen today is not even a hundred years old. Thanks to the hard work and struggle of Ms Sonora Louise Smart Dodd of Washington that just as we have set aside Mother’s Day to honor mothers we have a day to acknowledge the important role played by the father. However, some scholars opine that Father’s Day history is much older than we actually believe it to be. They say that the custom of honoring dads on a special day is over 4 000 years old. There are a few more claims about the Father’s Day origin about which we will learn in this page. Earliest history of Father’s Day Scholars believe that the origin of Father’s Day is not a latest phenomenon, as many believe it to be. Rather they claim that the tradition of Father’s Day can be traced in the ruins of Babylon. They have recorded that a young boy called Elmesu carved a Father’s Day message on a card made out of clay nearly 4 000 years ago. Elmesu wished his Babylonian father good health and a long life. Though there is no record of what happened to Elmesu and his father, but the tradition of celebrating Father’s Day remained in several countries all over the world. History of Father’s Day in US Modern version of Father’s Day celebration originated in United States of America and thereafter the tradition spread in countries around the world. The world owes thanks to Ms Sonora Louise Smart Dodd a loving daughter from Spokane, Washington as it is because of her struggle that Father’s Day saw the light of the day. The idea of Father’s Day celebration originated in Sonora’s mind when she per chance listened to Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Fairly mature at the age 27, Sonora pondered if there is a day to honor mother then why not for father? Sonora felt strongly for fathers because of the affection she received from her own father Mr William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran. Sonora’s mother died while childbirth when she was just 16. Mr Smart raised the newborn and five other children with love and care. Inspired by Ms Anna Jarvis’s struggle to promote Mother’s Day, Ms Dodd began a rigorous campaign to celebrate Father’s Day in US. The Spokane Ministerial Association and the local Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) supported Sonora’s cause. As a result Spokane celebrated its first Father’s Day on 19 June 1910. Though there was initial hesitation the idea gained gradual popularity all over US and Father’s Day came to be cel-
ebrated in cities across the country. Looking at the heightened popularity of Father’s Day in US, President Woodrow Wilson approved of this idea in 1916. President Calvin Coolidge too supported the idea of a national Father’s Day in 1924 to, “establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations”. After a protracted struggle of over four decades, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day in 1966. Then in 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. Sonora Smart Dodd was honored for her contribution at the World’s Fair in Spokane in 1974. Mrs. Dodd died in 1978 at age 96. Other theories of Fathers Day origin There are several theories behind the origination of Father’s Day. Some believe that the first Father’s Day church service was held in West Virginia in 1908. Others opine that the ceremony was first held in Vancouver, Washington. The president of Lions’ Club, Chicago, Harry Meek is said to have celebrated the first Father’s Day with his organization in 1915 to stress on the need to honor fathers. He selected the third Sunday in June for celebration, the closest date to Meek’s own birthday. In appreciation for Meek’s work, the Lions’ Clubs of America presented him with a gold watch, with the inscription “Originator of Father’s Day,” on his
birthday, 20 June 1920. Some historians honour Mrs. Charles Clayton of West Virginia, as the Founder of Father’s Day. In 1957, Senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote Congress that, “Either we honor both our parents, mother and father, or let us desist from honoring either one. But to single out just one of our two parents and omit the other is the most grievous insult imaginable.” In countries where Catholic Church holds greater influence Father’s Day is celebrated on St. Joseph’s Day (March 19). Present day celebrations The Father’s Day festival has gained amazing popularity over the years. The festival is considered to be a secular one and is celebrated not just in US but in a large number of countries around the world including Argentina, Australia,Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Norway and India though on different dates. The world over, people take Father’s Day as an opportunity to thank father and pay tribute to them. On this day children present Father’s Day cards not just to their dads, but also grandfathers, uncles, stepfathers or any other person who commands the position of a father in their life. There is also a trend to present Father’s Day gift to dad, most popular of all being necktie. Other popular gift being roses, the official Father’s Day flower. Many people rue that the trend of presenting gifts to fathers has led to over commercialisation of the festival relegating the noble idea behind Father’s Day celebration. – Fathersdaycelebration.com

SA Youth learn the spirit of sport WEEKLY REPORTER IN a celebration of healthy living, the KZN sports and recreation department, together with Verulam Falcons Athletics Club and the Tonver Schools Sports Council, held the widely loved Tonver Games at Verulam Secondary School recently. Children from all around the North Coast met at Verulam Secondary on Sunday, 15 May to take part in an athletics tournament organised to encourage sport activity in the area’s youth. Backed by the provincial sports and recreation department, the
games served to both showcase the sporting talent resident in our area and to raise awareness about the importance of healthy living. This allowed sporting veterans to pass the baton on to this young generation of athletes. DURBAN SPAR 10km Women’s Challenge I
(34:50) and Christine Kalmer (35:05) who all crossed the line virtually together to fill fourth, fifth and sixth places this time around. Despite her impressive performance, Van Zyl said she would have liked to have posted a faster time except that she was nursing a knee injury as a result of a fall during a training run a couple of weeks ago but had decided to run the race to give her knee a try-out in what has become known in roadrunning circles as “the country’s most beautiful race” led out annually by the traditional vanguard of bikers from Steelwings Club on their shining Harley Davidson motorcycles. Van Zyl said after the race that not only had her knee passed the test but that she had also benefitted by gaining some badly needed confidence she could take forward in her preparations for the marathon event she will run at the Olympic Games in Rio de Ja-
neiro in August. Unbeaten in the SPAR Grand Prix so far this year, van Zyl said her focus from now on would be exclusively for the Olympic Games Marathon which she raced at the London Olympics four years ago. “Winning races gives you confidence,” she said. “But I also get confidence from my training.” “When I went to the Olympics in London I was quite overwhelmed by the occasion, but I believe this time I will be better prepared as I know what to expect,” she said. Joubert expressed mixed feelings about her performance today saying: “I came fourth last year and second this year but my time today was slower than last year’s and this a cause for concern." Phalula, another destined to run the Olympic marathon along with Van Zyl and Christine Kalmer, was also unhappy with her time on the fast, flat

>> Olympian Irvette van Zyl (Nedbank Running Club) wins title N one of the most decisive performances in the 27-year history of the race Olympian Irvette van Zyl (Nedbank Running Club) devastated the rest of the field to win Sunday’s Durban leg of the SPAR Women’s 10km Challenge in an inaugural course record of 33 minutes 26 seconds in perfect running conditions. Van Zyl (nee Van Blerk), the 2010 and 2011 winner, set an incredibly fast pace right from the start in Masabalala Yengwa Avenue outside the Growthpoint King’s Park Stadium and had dropped off all her serious challengers including second-placed Cornelia Joubert (34:26) and thirdplaced Lebo-Diana Phalula (34:39), both of Boxer AC, by the 5km halfway mark. Running at a steady pace of 3:20 per kilometre for the entire duration of the race Van Zyl proved too fast for her other challengers, Zimbabwean Rutendo Nyahora (34:48), Glenrose Xaba

Irvette van Zyl (Nedbank Running Club). course which took in a few kilometres along the scenic Durban beachfront. “We will all have to be aiming for faster times on the road to Rio,” she said. Victory in today’s Durban leg of the lucrative SPAR Grand Prix Series came on the back of Van Zyl’s first places in the opening legs of the GP series in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth with two legs yet to come, Pretoria on September 3 and Johannesburg on October 9. Her effort today earned her R20 000 which she also collected for winning in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.
“We were pleased with the new route, and a new look and feel for the Challenge this year at Growthpoint Kings Park Stadium,” said Rob Philipson, MD of SPAR KZN. “It was fantastic having our race so well supported and the energy was really palpable. “We are in awe of the athletic prowess of the top runners, but we also applaud the amazing efforts shown by young and old alike – it was amazing to see participants as young as nine years walking together with some that were older than 80!” There was an entry of 16 074 at the close of registration late on Saturday afternoon with most women opting for the 10km run/ walk and the balance signing up for the 5km fun run/ walk. KPMG runners dominated the junior age group category led by Simonay Weitsz (36:27), Yandiswa Shange (37:51) and Carina Viljoen (37:56) with Janie Grundling (Boxer) taking the 35-39 years age group category in 35:49, Tanith Maxwell the 40-49 years in 35:39, Ansie Breytenbach the 50-59 in 44:22 and Sandra Fismer the over 60 years in 46:25 which saw the everpresent 60-year-old Blanche Moila coming second in 49:21. - Supplied
