A number of reasons to celebrate

This week ONLINE

MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). continues to destroy some of our communities. However, the one thing that continues to stand undefeated is the spirit of the Upper Highway community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

own challenges this year, but as we enter 2015 we renew our pledge to you to do our very best to continue to be the most accurate, fair and balanced source of news, opinion, features, sports and entertainment in the Upper Highway Area. We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. Kalisha Naicker Senior Journalist Hillcrest Fever

Opposition party snatches ruling party strongholds >> ‘Voters were unhappy with transition in leadership within the ANC that was made in December’ ANDILE SITHOLE

O

NE of the major opposition parties on the North Coast, the Democratic Alliance (DA) snatched three wards from the ruling party in the recent local government elections. The DA took wards 61, 58 and 106, which were the ANC srongholds after the last elections. The DA, led by Dolly Munien locally, took Ward 61 in Tongaat from the ANC with more than 8 000 votes while ANC received 6 761 votes. ANC outgoing councillor, Michael Abraham for Ward 61, did not stand as ward councillor for the recent elections. Prior to the elections residents took

to the streets claiming that the ANC made changes to the candidate list without informing the community. Protestors vowed not to vote for the ANC in the municipal elections because they claimed to have been “betrayed”. The DA also won Ward 106 and received 45.2% while the ruling party only got 38.74%. The EFF received 4.23%. The new councillor Johnson Chetty (DA) replaces ANC councillor, Mxolisi Ndzimbomvu. Political analyst Bheki Mngomezulu from Mzala Nxumalo Study for the Southern Africa says factionalism and infighting within the ruling party on the North Coast was the main reason it lost many wards.

Mngomezulu told Coastal Weekly he strongly believes the ANC’s demise in other KZN municipalities was caused by problems that plagued the organisation from December 2015. “Voters were not happy with the transition in leadership within the ANC that was made in December last year. “The changes in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature added up to the frustration of the community,” he said. Mngomezulu added that North Coast residents opted to jump into bed with opposition parties in a bid to change their lives. “There is no doubt that residents opted to vote for opposition parties in order to bring about change in their re-

spective areas. The community was frustrated and demanded to see change in these municipal elections. “That gave opposition parties, like the DA and IFP, an opportunity to take away the votes from the ruling party. “However, there is still hope for the ruling party to pick up where it left off. The palpable anger among the public will not last forever. “We have seen members of the NFP

rejoining the IFP after the NFP formed a coalition with the ANC. “Such things are not peculiar in politics,” he said. Despite the poor performance by the ANC on the North Coast, it managed to keep eThekwini Municipality with 126 seats while the DA got 61 seats in council. Nationally, the ANC remains on top with more than 50 000 votes followed by the DA and then the IFP. According to the results published by the Independent Electoral Commission, the ANC is leading with 5 163 seats on national level, followed by the DA with 1 775 and IFP with 432.

ANDILE SITHOLE MORE than 100 workers downed tools and took to the streets of Verulam demanding a wage increase on Wednesday. The workers from a textile company in Verulam are demanding a 12% increase. The striking workers affiliated to the Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union (SACTWU) downed tools on 1 August and vowed to continue protesting until they come to an agreement. Sindiswa Ngcobo (36) told the Weekly that workers will continue striking until their demands are met. Among the other thing that the workers are complaining about is that employees who have worked for more than 15 years are being underpaid while new workers get more. KZN regional secretary of SACTWU Themba Ngcobo said the union was in negotiations with the employer to reach a resolution. “Bilateral talks between our union and the employer are underway. We are aware of the strike in Verulam and we would report back to our members as soon as we reach an agreement with the employer,” he said. Police spokesman in Verulam Captain Mark Prakasim said the police were on standby. “There are no arrests made yet the police are monitoring the situation while workers are striking,” he said. The director of the company was in a meeting and not able to comment at time of going to press.

Celebration of dance

VERULAM artist Iqraam Rahim’s Rampage Dance Company will be hosting a dance spectacular at Durban’s playhouse this month. NAACH - My Diary of Dance is a celebration of dance from a South African Indian perspective and will be performed on Friday 19 August at 7pm at The Playhouse in Durban. It features a cast of 30 performers made up of pupils from Crawford, Northwood, Verulam Secondary, Seatides Combined DHS, Maritzburg College, St John’s College, Our Lady of Fatima and the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Rahim, who is one of the choreographers whose work is featured in the forthcoming movie, Keeping Up with the Kandasamys, said: “NAACH - My Diary of Dance is the only proudly South African Bollywood dance production of its kind. “It communicates the values, aspirations and challengers of a dancer through spoken word diary entries (spoken by word artist Sanam Sitaram). The production aims to distinguish genres of dance such as folk, classical, and contemporary styles within a Bollywood

framework. Seeking inspiration from the Siddhi tribe (an African tribe that is found living in India), also from this year’s 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare, and from the political theatrics of our country, the show stands to be an entertaining evening with nuances of comedy, culture and drama.” The production will also feature a special guest appearance by professional dancers Vedarsha Singh and Kashmir Pattendeen who will perform a new dance number especially choreographed for them by Rahim. Add to this an art exhibition featuring three local artists - Sonaly Hurdayal, Neha Misra and Thirusha Chetty- as well as a choreographic debut by Yuthika Nagessur, the evening stands as an art festival featuring artwork, dance work and spoken word. Tickets are R150 per person, available at Computicket on 0861 915 8000 or online at www.computicket.com. Alternatively bookings can be made through The Playhouse box office on 031 369 9540 (office hours). - Supplied.

True leadership RANJENI MUNUSAMY

W

E often moan about the lack of accountability in our society and the chronic failure of our leaders to take responsibility for their actions. Passing the buck and employing delaying tactics, including costly court actions, appear to be the default reactions of people in leadership positions when they are caught out being involved in wrongdoing. One only has to look at the wild

goose chase embarked on by the chief operating officer of the SABC, Hlaudi Motsoeneng, to stay in his job and continue stripping the public broadcaster of credibility. President Jacob Zuma had mastered the art of dodging accountability until he was dragged to the Constitutional Court and forced to admit that he was wrong not to implement the public protector’s report on Nkandla. He now has to pay back the money for undue benefits. We do not expect much when it comes to people facing up to their failures. It was therefore a shocking and moving experience to watch a media briefing by the Trek4Mandela team on their return from Mount Kilimanjaro after the tragic death of racing car driver Gugu Zulu. Zulu died after experiencing difficulty breathing while he

and his wife Letshego were attempting to summit the mountain as part of a charity drive for the Nelson Mandela Foundation. The news of the death of the sports personality stunned the nation and left those who knew him in deep grief. When the Nelson Mandela Foundation announced that there would be a media briefing on the team’s return from Tanzania, it was expected that there would be tributes and expressions of condolence. What ensued, however, was unprecedented. The expedition leader, mountaineer Sibusiso Vilane, began with an emotional apology to the nation for not bringing the whole team back home. “It was on Wednesday last week when I stood up and said to your fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters who had come to bid you farewell. that

Challenge of coalition politics GEORGE DEVENISH

A COALITION government is formed when a political alliance of two or more parties comes to power, or when a plurality, i.e. not a majority, has not been reached and two or more parties must work together in order to govern. In the local government elections that took place last Wednesday, this occurred in the three metros, Nelson Mandela Bay, Tshwane and Johannesburg. The law and the Constitution require that a newly elected municipal council must meet within 14 days after the Independent Electoral Commission has declared the final result, in order to elect a speaker and then a mayor, both of whom must be elected by means of a simple majority. This implies that any group of parties can agree to form a coalition, which can take on the form of merely an agreement encapsulating a political alliance, regardless of whether this includes the largest party in the council concerned. At the least, this agreement must involve agreement on the elections, respectively, of the speaker and the mayor. If no coalition can be formed, the political situation will be very unstable, giving rise to a minority government, as Professor Pierre de Vos points out in his blog, Constitutionally Speaking. In such circumstances, this results in such a situation that must endure for at least two years, in the absence of a workable coalition because a municipal council may only, by law, dissolve itself after at least two years have passed since the council was elected and only when two thirds of the council

members support a motion to that effect. Coalitions of all kinds, but particularly those cobbled together with smaller parties, are prone to inherent instability as a desertion by any one of them could result in a vote of no confidence, as was the DA’s experience in Cape Town, after the 2006 local government elections. It is for this reason, as far as stability is concerned, that a two-party coalition involving, for example, the DA and the EFF, or the ANC and the EFF, would be preferable. However, it is reported that EFF leader Julius Malema is “playing it cool, denying there has been any discussion up to now, saying any deal would have to be about inter alia giving people land” (Independent on Saturday, August 6). He also said that “[t]he EFF would rather abstain from voting in council than be a front for white arrogance or rescue the ANC” (Saturday Star, August 6). Although this can be discounted as typical Malema bravado, it gives an indication of just how difficult it is going to be to form and maintain coalitions, be it with several smaller parties or involving the EFF and the DA or ANC. However, coalitions at local government level are concerned essentially with the service delivery of water, sanitation, electricity and housing. These are essentially pragmatic issues that are less concerned with macro-economic policy, concerning which it may be easier to reach agreement on, than on national policy issues, such as the nature of the economic system and land redistribution. Nevertheless, despite the inherent problematic nature of coalition governments, they can be successful.

They can facilitate democratic participation, greater transparency, less corruption and greater social and economic justice, all of which are essential if we are to succeed as a prosperous and leading nation on the African continent and among nations of the world. The ANC as a political party should engage in a period of profound introspection concerning its overall electoral decline as manifested in the results of the local government elections, which could lead to genuine renewal and invigoration. Involvement in coalition government could assist in this regard. Furthermore, it should be borne in mind that the ANC, after being in office for more than 20 years, is in decline, as has occurred with other liberation movements, such as the Congress Party of India. This state of affairs may not be easily arrested and as a result the national and provincial elections due to be held in 2019 are also likely to require the need for coalition government. What is happening now may well be a dress rehearsal for what will need to be replicated in two years’ time. South Africa is a country of infinite potential with great natural and human resources. The results of the local-government election and the prospect of coalition governments in the sphere of local government, present us with a new and exciting challenge in our democratic experience. South Africa as a nation with its diverse communities, its leaders and people, must rise to the occasion. • George Devenish is emeritus professor at UKZN and one of the scholars who assisted in drafting the Interim Constitution in 1993.

as the leader of the Trek4Mandela Caring4Girls Kilimanjaro expedition, my role is to make sure that I bring those you have come to say goodbye to back safely and alive. I am very disappointed to say I did not deliver on that promise,” Vilane said, breaking down in tears. Vilane and the team doctor Roxanne Schutte gave a run down of what had happened, describing Zulu’s condition at various stages of the trek until they decided that he should be brought down the mountain. The Nelson Mandela Foundation CEO Sello Hatang, who had flown to Tanzania after hearing of Zulu’s death, told how he had roped the couple into participating in the expedition. “Little did he know that that was his final destination. To South Africa, I would like to say I’m really sorry that I didn’t bring Gugu Zulu back alive. At this very low moment for our country, this low moment for the Nelson Mandela Foundation and for Madiba’s legacy, we will say this is yet another mountain that we have to summit again,” an emotional Hatang said.

ANC in decline and Zuma the reason THE final results of the recent local elections make it blatantly obvious that the ANC has been given a sound smack by the people of South Africa. The ruling party can spin it as much as it would like, but it knows it as well as we do. The ANC’s decline in support has been ongoing since 1994, but until 2009 and the coming of Jacob Zuma, it was largely imperceptible, and certainly not anything for the leadership to get concerned about. Since then, however, its monolithic hold on power has become in-

creasingly tenuous. Again the ANC can deny it as vehemently as it likes, but it recognises this truth. Zuma, in all his brazen ineptitude and in-your-face arrogance, is very much the reason. My advice to the opposition parties is to do all in their power to keep him in place until 2019, by which time voter support for the ANC will almost certainly have fallen below 50%. And Jesus will still only be considering his second coming. KEVIN WYLIE

Not voting is not the best answer ONE has to feel for residents living with out basic commodities. Living without water for more than 10 days, being intimidated and chased away from communal taps, and under constant siege from criminals, is nobody’s cup of tea. But the decision by some residents to not vote in last week’s local government elections was the wrong one, although, considering the volatile situation in the area, not unexpected. Simple arithmetic tells one that with holding one’s vote from a certain party, to

wards which animosity is felt, and then giving that vote to the opposition, consti tutes a double blow. This could have been a better option, rather than staying away from the polling stations or spoiling ballots. Those who did go out and exercise their democratic rights should feel proud. But, on yet another historic day in the history of South Africa, for some residents this was just another day, with their dem ocratic rights, for now, being neglected. ANTHONY TIMMS

Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula offered words of comfort, saying it had been a voluntary climb for a good cause and that nobody should feel blame. “Here before us, lies a story of goodwill that humanity and all races must follow. It is an inspirational story. It is tragic, but it will remain for us in history forever and forever.” Many people at the media briefing and watching the live broadcast were in tears as each member of the panel spoke. Zulu’s death at the prime of his life, leaving behind a wife and oneyear-old baby, is painful and tragic. But it was also deeply moving to see Hatang and the team members respecting the nation enough to account for what happened, even though they themselves were grief-stricken. Nobody had expected immediate and detailed answers but they felt it their responsibility to account to the nation. There could be no greater mark of true leadership. • Ranjeni Munusamy is a political journal ist and commentator for the Daily Maver ick. ranjeni.munusamy@gmail.com

TEN Emerging cooks pitted their skills against one another in the funfilled yet rather demanding Durban semifinal of a curry cook off which took place at Siba ya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom recently. The competition, sponsored by Sun International and Fry’s, kicked off in May this year, inviting entries from would be chefs from across the country. At the semifinal event at Sibaya, the cooks were given an hour to prepare their signature vegetarian dishes which were then evaluated by a panel of judg es. On the judging panel were Master Chef SA 2012 winner, Chef Deena Nai doo, cookery book author and celebrity

Chef Asha Maharaj, TV personality and academic director of the South African Hospitality Institute, Chef Thigam Nat hoo, Sibaya’s executive chef Sanjeen Ramsuroop and Deena Pillay from The Post. Coming up trumps in the semifinals was Sohail Seegobin, with Brian Chetty Venkatesan in second place. The six finalists chosen at Sibaya, along with the two finalists chosen at Trade Route Mall in Gauteng, will go through to the final event to take place at the Wild Coast Sun on 27 August. Emerging chefs show their currycooking skills

M

>> Elephant Ignite expedition starts on Women’s Day ONTHS of hard work and preparation reached a crescendo for an all-female team of intrepid adventurers at Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom on Women’s Day, 9 August 2016. The women, pioneers of the Elephant Ignite Expedition – a quest to conserve Africa’s elephants – have finally commenced the gruelling 10 000 kilometre journey from Sibaya in KwaZulu-Natal to Kenya. Their departure was marked with much fanfare as friends, family, members of the media and other key stakeholders gathered at Sibaya to wish them well. During their epic expedition, traversing 10 African countries, they will raise funds to elephant conservation and engage with various research organisations, conservation bodies, and political and tribal leaders to help foster knowledge-sharing between generations and nationalities. The expedition will be filmed for a web-series for the award-winning Earth Touch website: www.earthouchnews.com. The series will document not only the journey, but tell the stories of the various organisations and people who are truly making a difference in the world of elephant conservation. The epic journey will be underpinned by community upliftment, youth education, public awareness of the plight of African’s declining population, and a fundraising drive to support the dedicated non-profit organisations that are doing such amazing work to protect the elephants. “The projects and organisations we will be visiting all provide conservation as well as community upliftment and educational programmes especially amongst the youth. We hope to weave an invisible web, linking together these

HREE teams from Protec Tongaat participated in the SAICE Inter-schools Bridge Building competition at UKZN recently. Organised by the SA Institute of Civil Engineers, the aim of the competition is to give young people the opportunity to test their skills and aptitude in engineering concepts and develop their math and science skills in a fun and interesting way. Over 30 teams from 12 different schools participated in the KZN competition Each team was given a bundle of 25 strips of balsa wood and a pack of Pratley adhesive and the competition was to see whose bridge could carry the heaviest load. “We are very proud of our teams who were placed fourth and eighth overall carrying loads of 310 and 180 newtons respectively,” said Protec manager Marion Takis. Congratulations to Ferndale Secondary who won the competition for the second year running.

>> Games are played across four divisions – U11, U13, U15 and U17 WEEKLY REPORTER

A

BOUT 250 pupils and 44 teachers will make their way to Chatsworth this weekend to give new meaning to organised school sports thereby strengthening the existing bond among pupils from Tongaat, Verulam, Phoenix, Chatsworth and Pietermaritzburg. These annual quadrangular games is an awaited tournament where pupils are involved in friendly rivalry in soccer, netball, volleyball, table tennis and chess. These games are played across four divisions – U11, U13, U15 and U17. Preparations to participate in these games started early in the year as this is the only pupil-sponsored games in the area. Every pupil has to raise an amount, which differs from area to area, to cover the costs of transport to the venue, meals, a medal and administration. According to Tonver president, Guru Ramcharan: “This is one of the highlights on our sporting calendar for

our pupils. The organisation and administration of these games is always of the highest standard, yet we are plagued by financial woes so much so that we request pupils to fund these games. Yet, millions are spent in our province hosting teams in five-star hotels while the quality of the tournament leaves much to be desired.” Noel Martins, co-ordinator of Friendship Games 2016, of Chatsworth, was upbeat about the coming games. “We are ready to welcome our special guests, the pupils, to Chatsworth, who one day will be great ambassadors of public school sport.” “The Friendship Games provides a stage for our pupils to showcase their talent at another level. Every participant takes home a medal - gold, silver or bronze - which will remain as a reminder of the newly found friendship, the true spirit of sportsmanship and perhaps the grim reminder that school sport is still not yet fully unified in terms of playing venues, opportunities and funding,” said Kugan Subrayan,

chairperson of Phoessa. Kugen Moodley, secretary of the Pietermaritzburg outfit, was excited about making the trip to the coast. “Our pupils look forward to these championships as the friendly rivalry assures a holistic development of the individual. “A child on court is a child out of court and providing opportunities to participate in organised sport is fulfilling this goal of keeping them focused as sporting and academic excellence are inter-wined.” The Friendship Games action get under way on Saturday at the following venues: Soccer - Unit 3B grounds Netball - Chatsworth Stadium Volleyball - Arena Park Secondary School Table tennis - Chatsworth Youth Centre Chess - Arena Park Hall Tonver pupils will be travelling in a convoy of five buses. Parents are urged to make their own arrangements.

Tongaat karate superstar to represent SA WEEKLY REPORTER A TONGAAT young karateka will represent South African universities in the World Karate Student Games taking place in Portugal tomorrow (12 August). Yashveer Jugoo, a first year student from the University of Technology (DUT) together with other Skisa karate superstars will lock horns with highly acclaimed karatekas coming from various universities around the world. The three-day event is expected to attract more than 1000 university students around the world competing in the championships.

Speaking to the Weekly early this week, Jugoo said that he was over the moon and felt honoured to be among university students to represent South African flag overseas. “Representing South Africa in karate is a feeling I cannot explain. Calypso Sporting opens with a win THE Tongaat Indoor Stadium Calypso Sporting FC opened the 2016 indoor season with a convincing win over Maidstone FC and coming into this match were fresh from their opening 2016 knock out win last week. The match started as usual with a full attack and they did not give the opposition time to settle and thus took control and dedicated the pace and tempo of the game. Vinay Sookdhoo was as excellent as usual in not conceding any goals and was also called to make some good saves. In defence the captain Chappa Mapumulo, Victor Mngomezulu and Keshev Naidoo stood strong and resilient in marshaling the back line and not allowing any moves to pass them. They easily and comfortably diffused the attacks, frustrated and suppressed the opposition in not allowing them anyway near the goals and were only allowed to take long range shots that was of no danger. The attack upfront was spearheaded by Veshay Naidoo, Renolan Govender, Preshen

Khomarsamy and assisted by Keshev Naidoo who ran all over the opposition creating excellent chances and enabling them to score regularly and convincingly win the match 5-0. Newcomer Owen Coopsamy, who is in his teens and in his first senior match, showed brilliant skills with the ball. The management of Calypso was happy with the opening win that was an all-round team performance, but is not too excited knowing it’s only the first match and a still a long way to go. They will be focusing on one match at a time and at the same time building a strong team for the future and with the vision of playing in the national indoor professional league of SAFA. Currently there is only one defender and striker position available. The club trains on Tuesdays from 7pm to 8pm at the Shaik Mohideen stadium and on Sundays from 4.30pm at the indoor sports stadium. Only those who are fit, who have being training, committed and dedicated are requested to contact the manager Strini Moodley 083 329 5172 or the assistant manager Phil Msomi 082 734 5451 with the possibility of registering for the team in the available positions and no position is guaranteed if the players are not fit and committed. - Supplied.
