MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime
continues to destroy some of our communities. However, the one thing that continues to stand undefeated is the spirit of the Upper Highway community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

“M
ATRIC pupils must be consistent and pay attention to the lessons taught in the class.” This is a message from a matriculant from Tongaat Secondary, who achieved six distinctions . Salesh Harrysharan (17) was among the four top pupils in his school who achieved outstanding results in their 2016 final examination. “My 2016 was easy because I was consistent in my studies. Last year I planned and set my goals in advance in order to avoid frustration.” Salesh received As in English (home language), mathematics, life orientation, geography, information technology and life sciences. In Afrikaans he received 75%. “I have been a consistent pupil since my first day of school in 2016. I paid attention to the lessons taught in class. I grasped and understood everything taught and did not find it difficult to concentrate as I had built up myself esteem and confidence in achieving six distinctions in my matric year.” “After writing all my papers, I was extremely confident that I had received six distinctions. I did not stress about the results being published on 5 January. I now look forward to achieving distinctions in my university years of study.” Salesh wants to pursue a degree in BSc computer science and information technology at the University of KwaZuluNatal. He thanked his parents Roshni and Sailendra Harrysharan for being his pillars of strength. “I would also like to thank my former teachers at Victoria Primary for building me up and my teachers at Tongaat Secondary, especially my IT teacher Karuna Nadasen and mathematics teacher Maggie Naidoo who played a major role in my life. Working with computers has always been my dream and I believe that computers can be used to make our lives easy. My dream is to start my own company. I will continue working hard at university and promise to receive more As at the university.” Father, Sailendra urged parents to be fully supportive towards the education of their children. “As a parent and former chairperson of the school governing body, I have noted that some parents are not fully committed to assisting their children. I believe it is the responsibility of every parent to be more vigilant and support children in their studies.”

IVE suspects, who were arrested in Tongaat, appeared at the Verulam Magistrate’s court for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition on 4 January. The suspects, aged between 32 and 40 were arrested on the N2 near Tongaat Toll Plaza last Wednesday morning. Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said in a statement that Durban Flying Squad members were conducting crime prevention duties on the N2 when they received information about a vehicle suspected to be transporting firearms. “A joint operation by Durban Flying Squad, K9 Unit, Provincial Tracking Team and eThekwini Central Crime Intelligence was held and they started to look for the vehicle, a Toyota Quantum, which was spotted near the toll plaza. There were five suspects in the vehicle that was headed towards Inanda. The vehicle was searched and five unlicensed firearms were
recovered. “The recovered firearms include 303 rifle, two 7.65 pistols, Norico star, Z88 pistol and 30 ammunition. The firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if they were used in the commission of any crime. It is suspected that the suspects were on their way to commit crime and the police intercepted them.” KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa welcomed the arrest and the recovery of these firearms by the members. “I sincerely appreciated the good work displayed by our members in tracing and recovering these unlicensed firearms from wrong hands. “This will help in decreasing murder and armed robbery where firearms are used. “I encouraged the community to continue working with the police in the fight against crime by providing valuable information about illegal firearms in their areas.”

I
’VE recently read about MOOCs and I believe that these have the potential to solve a major part of the #feesmustfall problem. What are MOOCs, you are likely asking? MOOC stands for “massive open online course”, and are courses that an unlimited number of students can enrol and study for. All students’ need is Internet access. There’s already evidence of MOOCs revolutionising the way in which tertiary education is being provided around the world. I’ve read that by the end of 2015, there were some 35 million students worldwide who had each signed up for at least one MOOC. MOOCs initially sound pretty much like the correspondence-type courses that institutions, such as Unisa, have been providing for many years — and
that these are. However, with the advent of the Internet one can now provide better material-facilities for correspondencestyle courses, such as online video lectures, online multiple-choice testing, online discussion forums on which lecturers and fellow students can assist students, who have questions or queries or problems regarding the relevant course content, and because it’s all being conducted online, the responses should be prompt. I’ve done some basic research on MOOCs and it appears that the first MOOC was provided by a Canadian university in 2008. The course was provided to 25 fee-paying students and to 2 200 online students (the online students were able to access the course for nothing). Like all new developments there was an initial manic surge of enthusiasm for the concept, but this tapered

off a lot and has now recovered to more realistic levels. That enthusiasm for MOOCs still exists because while MOOCs aren’t perfect, they go a long way towards providing low-cost, affordable tertiary education to potentially many millions of poor and disadvantaged people, worldwide. Unsurprisingly, many non-profit organisations were the initial providers of MOOCs, but prominent universities, like Stanford University, Harvard University, Peking University, Oxford University and Paris’s Sorbonne University have taken their cue from these organisations and are now participating in MOOCs through online providers. Some of these MOOCs are being provided free and some require registration and fees to be paid. MOOCs, by their very nature, require the use of new technology — IT
High prices during festive season WITH Christmas a thing of the past it’s im portant to reflect on the prices of things you purchased. Fundamentally it is a case of goods be ing marked higher to generate maximum amount of profit. Have shops now become milking cows of the hardworking consum er? Why do prices go through the ceiling dur ing Christmas? Could the bonuses received
Judge Motata should resign I THINK it would be in the national interest if Judge Nkola Motata resigned without any delay. The man allegedly caused his car to crash into a wall in 2007 in a drunken stupor and added insult to injury by making racist rants and uttering profanities at the time of the incident. Unbelievably, he has had an extended fully paid holiday for almost a decade and has cost the hardpressed taxpayers approximately R16 million in salaries and benefits that he “earned” by his notorious actions and deliberate delaying tactics. Judge Dhaya Pillay is to be commended for recently rejecting Motata’s pathetic attempts to have the Judicial Services Tribunal to inquire into his misdemeanors thwarted and also ruling that the errant judge should bear the costs of the legal action as a punitive measure. One is innocent until proven guilty. Nevertheless, this is certainly one judge whose shameful actions, nonrepentance, failure to take responsibility for his misdoings and Fabian tactics must never be emulated. Simon T. Dehal
by workers be a catalyst to the exorbitant mark ups during this period? Why can’t prices remain the same as a token of appreciation for the patronage of the consumer? The concept of demand and supply is a relevant explanation in this context. How ever, could this economic phenomenon be used as a reason to extract the maximum amount of cash from consumers.
The day after Christmas is the beginning of many sales in most of or practically all the major chain stores where goods from clothes to toys to Christmas décor is re duced by as much as 60%, and even more. The simple explanation for these mark downs is that the goods will lie on the shelves because consumers have spent their money. It makes economic sense to get rid of Christmas stock by creating a demand
Thank you for the good work I WOULD like to thank all the officials and the public, who made the 2016/17 Christmas holiday season such a success at the various beaches in Ward 58. Lifeguards, Metro Police, SAPS, scholar patrols, DSW, Parks Depart-
ment, emergency services, private security and others kept eMdloti, La Mercy, Genazzano, Casuarina and Westbrook Beach clean and controlled. Beachgoers were also generally well behaved and tidy with their litter,

specialists, videographers, etc. need to be employed — but because of the economies of scale, when courses are popular or widely disseminated, these additional costs would be relatively small. I’ve also read that the completion rate of MOOCs is low (apparently, something like 10%), as, I would imagine, is the case with existing correspondence (Unisa-type) courses. Some students will drop out of a MOOC because their enthusiasm for the course wanes and some will take the course merely to educate themselves with no intention of ever writing the exams at the course’s conclusion. Being a new development, MOOCs are obviously controversial and have both supporters and detractors. I would say criticism that MOOCs can’t be as good as conventional courses or lectures is valid, and the completion rate of MOOCs is certainly likely to
for those who have budgeted for the antici pated lower prices. At the same time it’s al so depressing to walk past a store to see the shirt or dress that you paid R700 for before Christmas now being reduced by 50% or more on 26 December. The bottom line is that companies use the euphoria and festivities of Christmas as a marketing tool to extract the most amount of money from consumers. It’s up to the consumer to reflect on the prices and ask themselves if this purchase is really worth it. Ultimately the power to bring down pri ces lies in the hands of consumers.
too. Significantly, we had no drownings nor real emergencies either. All the interventions put in place contributed to this excellent festive season at our beaches - so well done to all concerned. Geoff D. A. Pullan Councillor
be lower than conventional courses or lectures — much like it is likely to be low with current correspondence (Unisa-style) courses. However, there is one major benefit, especially for developing countries, and that is the cost associated with providing MOOCs to large numbers of students. While being a low-cost option, MOOCs should be provided at a cost to the student - a low cost, but a cost nevertheless. I’m sure that students have a lot less guilt when they drop out of a course that they’re taking free, than to drop out of a course that they or their parents have paid for or borrowed money to study. I believe that our Department of Higher Education should investigate MOOCs urgently, as they certainly have the potential to defuse the current crisis that exists between the state, universities and the #feesmustfall campaigners. My final word on the subject - if students are sufficiently motivated to complete the course and graduate, they can surely overcome the limited disadvantages of online learning done through MOOCs. — Voices24. • Robin MunGavin is a financial manager at a Durbanbased law firm.

Why are KwaZuluNatal doctors sitting at home? ed by the DA in 2016 confirmed that the department remains cash-strapped and that vacancies exist. Worst affected are the patients in our province. This bureaucratic nightmare means longer queues for them as the doctors become increasingly tired, frustrated and burnt-out. The end result is more rude doctors and more mistakes, both of which are likely to push the province’s R10 billion medico-legal claim bill even higher. There is no shortage of applicant doctors in KZN and most are prepared to work anywhere in the province.

KZN’s Health Department is still reeling from the bad decision taken to freeze posts. While the department is in denial over this, the reality is that the red tape that was implemented when all posts were frozen remains in effect, with the result that the employment and placement of doctors remains problematic and in limbo. Meanwhile, both the provincial Health Department and Minister Aaron Motsoaledi’s spokesperson, Joe Maila, continue to refute the real reason doctors are sitting at home unemployed. All KZN Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo and his department have to do is make sure that employing more doctors becomes a priority over spending money at church events, such as the recent one in Illembe where R500 000 was spent, instead of complaining incessantly that there are no funds. The DA will be asking the MEC some hard questions. It is hoped the answers are swift and do not attempt to hide the real situation. Dr IMRAN KEEKA, MPL DA KZN spokesperson on health

One on one with Afrosoul singer ANDILE SITHOLE >>andile.sithole@media24.com
T
HANDEKA Zulu (25) is a vocalist, actress and singer who has made her name in the entertainment industry. Her aim and dream is to get the the youth from her home town of Tongaat, to follow in her footsteps. Coastal Weekly reporter, Andile Sithole recently caught up with her to find out more about what she wants to achieve. CW: Where did you grow up? TZ: I grew up in Hambanathi in Tongaat. CW: What did you want to become as a child? TZ: I wanted to be an entertainer. CW: Who is your source of inspiration? TZ: I look up to Mbongeni Ngema. CW: What have you achieved so far in the industry? TZ: I worked with a group called Lindokuhle from the age of eight. While at school I had a privilege of working with Jae [African-pop artist] as a backing vocalist and dancer. After [completing] matric I worked with Mbongeni Ngema in productions, Sarafina, Jola and
Stimela Sase-Zola to mention a few. In 2010 I ventured into modelling, which opened many doors for me. I was also part of a chorus in a production called Spirit and Bones, which was performed at the Pretoria State Theatre and in Johannesburg at the Winde Bra Theatre. That year I was hired as the lead dancer at the Crown Gospel Awards gala dinner. I started working with Afrosoul as a dancer and backing vocalist before I became a lead dancer. CW: You were one of the actresses for Uzalo, so how did you end up on television? TZ: I kept on going to auditions. CW: Viewers know you as Nombuso on Uzalo, how different are you from Nombuso’s character? TZ: Nombuso is like my twin, her background and mine are almost the same. CW: You landed a role in a Zulu comedy movie in 2016. Who did you play? TZ: I played Thembalethu and enjoyed it. My partner Shokwakhe is a good actor. CW: You are part of a local band, Afrosoul, what is your role in it? TZ: I’m the only female member of this multi-award winning trio called Afrosoul.
North Coast’s top performers THE North Coast schools had reason to celebrate their results once again with many achieving pass rates over 90%. Matric pupils from Mountview Secondary in Verulam produced excellent results with an increase in the pass rate. Pupils achieved an impressive overall pass rate of 92,26%. Top achiever Siphesihle M Mtshali achieved seven distinctions in English, Afrikaans, mathematics, engineering and graphic design, life sciences, physical sciences and life orientation. The other three pupils who achieved six distinctions were Kavir Bodha, Khwezilokusa Maphasa and Jeneane Naidoo. Verulam Secondary School achieved a 95.62% pass rate with 58% of their pupils gaining university entrance and a whopping 180 subject distinctions. These accolades made Verulam Secondary one of the top performing schools within the Billy Nair Circuit. Principal Mr. S. Govender attributed this success to the synergy that exists between the circuit manger, Mr. S. A. Chetty, members of the school governance, the academic team, pupils and parents. Chairperson of the governing body Mr MA Moidin said: “Verulam Secondary has always been the most consistent school in generating academic excellence. The governance is full praise for excellent leadership from the principal and his team.” Some of the top achievers from Ver-
ulam Secondary were: Sameera Alli (7As), Mikaila Olivier (7As), Roweena Bramdeo (6As), Nirelle Reddy (6As), Sthembile Gracia Mkihize (5 As), Sthabile Stembokuhle Maphumulo (5 As), Kovilan Kobalan Moodley (5As) and Deveshen Bobby Chetty (5As). The matric class of 2016 from Protec Tongaat had reason to celebrate as they excelled achieving significantly better results than the KZN and national average. All 32 Protec matriculants passed, with 91% of the students achieving university passes. There were a total of 44 subject distinctions with five distinctions in math and physical science, the two core subjects at Protec. The top pupil Sinethemba Dlamini, achieved five distinctions. Other star pupils were Khaylihle Mpanza and Akshay Durgapersadh, who both achieved four distinctions. “We are extremely proud of our pupils who worked consistently hard throughout the year and the most important thing about these results is that they enable our pupils to pursue meaningful careers,” said Protec Tongaat manager Marion Takis. The pupils who received bursaries are Sinethemba Dlamini and Khayelihle Mpanza. Dlamini received a bursary from Sasol and will be studying BSC chemical engineering at UKZN and Mpanza received a bursary from Investec to study BCom at Wits University.

What you can expect to earn with a matric, and beyond SOUTH African youth who stay in school for longer have much better salary prospects than those with limited schooling, said Analyico, a company that provides earnings analysis in South Africa. “Based on our research, for South Africa to overcome the large earnings inequality staying in school for longer will have a significant impact on reducing the polarisation of our labour market. “Education has a prominent role to play in reducing income inequality and depolarising a currently deeply divided society,” said company spokesperson Jaén Beelders. However, completing high school does not translate into individuals finding themselves in a better position in the labour market. There is an important distinction to be made with regards to the quality of education, since the poorest South Africans only have access to “free schooling” and these schools generally do not perform as well as more affluent schools, Beelders said. Studies in South Africa have shown that the wealthiest 20% of South Africans in Grade 6 have far better reading tests scores than the least wealthy 20%, indicating that the quality of education must be considered to determine earnings capacity upon leaving school,

Beelders said. “The current education system, instead of fighting earnings inequality, is reproducing the patterns of poverty and inequality that we are observing currently in South Africa.” Furthermore, the estimated dropout rate of 44.6%, which is assumed to be largely in the more impoverished areas in South Africa, young people entering the labour market are finding themselves in unskilled occupations. Consequently, they must compete with more experienced individuals in this sector decreasing their chances of employment. If young South Africans drop out of school, it can be observed to have a significant detrimental impact on their potential future earnings capacity. It can further be observed that pupil who leave school early often experience sustained periods of unemployment and this in turn further reduces their potential earnings capacity relative to their more educated peers. This results in a spiral of poverty and inequality in the South African context for youngsters, Beelders said. The company did research on young South Africans’ earnings potential based on educational outcomes. The following analysis was conduct-

ed with Statistics South Africa data, using the Analytico Earnings Analysis ModelTM with a total sample size of 717 364 individuals with educational outcomes of Grade 8 to Bachelors level. It was based on median gross income per month in October 2016 terms. Analytico said the figures here are what one could reasonably expect to earn on entering the labour market given the grouped qualifications: • No schooling: R1 704 • Some primary (Grade 1 – 7 incomplete) education: R1 867 • Completed primary school (Grade 7): R1 946 • Some Secondary Education (Grade 8 – Grade 12 incomplete): R2 660 • Grade 12: R4 977 • Grade 12 with Certificate: R8 326 • Grade 12 with Diploma: R13 378 • Bachelor’s degree: R21 527 Beelders emphasised that the analysis does not account for tenure, specific occupations, professional designations, decision-making bands or the differentiation between full-time or parttime employed individuals. “This information should not be regarded as a substitute for more detailed earnings research,” he said. - Fin24.
