A number of reasons to celebrate

This week ONLINE

MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime

continues to destroy some of our communities. However, the one thing that continues to stand undefeated is the spirit of the Upper Highway community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

own challenges this year, but as we enter 2015 we renew our pledge to you to do our very best to continue to be the most accurate, fair and balanced source of news, opinion, features, sports and entertainment in the Upper Highway Area. We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. Kalisha Naicker Senior Journalist Hillcrest Fever

Heavy rains make little difference to dams >> Hazelmere Dam increases by one percent GRAHAM BARCLAY

P

EOPLE living in areas across the KwaZulu-Natal province welcomed the heavy downpour over the weekend, but it did little to raise the level of the hard-hit Hazelmere Dam. Hazelmere is fed by the Mdloti River and is responsible for providing water for much of the North Coast area. Since the drought intensified earlier this year, water restrictions were put in place throughout the region and residents are desperate for relief. According to Umgeni Water spokesperson, Shami Harichunder, the level of Hazelmere has only increased by roughly 1% since last weekend’s rainfall.

This means that North Coast residents have to remain vigilant in saving water resources as the level of Hazelmere Dam stays critical. While the heavy rain soaked the dusty streets of Tongaat, Verulam and Ballito, not enough rain fell in the dam’s water catchment area and Harichunder urges people to be mindful of the water they are using. Hambanathi resident Nkosinathi Ndlovu said the rains, although needed, caused some flood damage to homes in the settlement as water cascaded down the unpaved streets. “It rained hard all weekend and water was flowing fast past my house. Water was also leaking through my roof, so I had to put buckets down to try and catch it,” said Ndlovu, who added that some residents are still col-

lecting their own water to wash with and drink. With more rains expected later in the week, people continue to pray the dam level increases soon as residents,

farmers and small businesses face the hard reality of further water restrictions. Hazelmere Dam is still being supported by water transferred into it

from the uThongathi River emergency scheme constructed by Umgeni Water about a year ago at a cost of R34 million to supplement water resources on the North Coast.

Tongaat and Verulam’s street light saga continues F

RUSTRATED residents of Tongaat and Verulam are living on streets forced into darkness by faulty street lights and have said that none of their lodged complaints have been attended by eThekwini Municipality. Kay Kalideen, a resident of Burbreeze in the Tongaat area, said she filed her first complaint on 22 July 2015 and since no repairs were done, she had to file a number of others get-

ting a new reference number from eThekwini each time. “I have counted 31 faulty lights lining the R102 between the Fairbreeze Hotel and the end of the suburb and now a year later, nothing has been done to fix them,” said Kalideen, who added that she was given a new reference number on 1 March when she lodged her last complaint. Another frustrated resident in Verulam known as ‘Bucks’, said lights have been out for more than a month on Ireland and Trout streets, despite

Review security measures in winter WHILE most people want nothing more than to be indoors and cosy after dark in winter, darkness provides the cover criminals need to break into houses undetected or wait in the shadows for residents to arrive home, says security company district manager, KZN, Ivan Govender. “Most of us don’t favour nocturnal outings in winter - criminals do. It’s important for residents to be extra vigilant and perhaps reassess their security routines in winter.” While an increase in criminal activity is mostly due to the early onset of darkness, Govender says there are a few factors that influence higher crime levels in winter. Residents often keep animals indoors, out of the cold, and as a result don’t set their home alarm systems at night. With dogs indoors, there’s also no early-warning for residents should criminals enter the property. The risk of load shedding is much higher during winter. This impacts on lighting, non-functional gate motors and security systems, in general, if the necessary back-up power is not in place. Criminals are often on the lookout for vehicles that are left idling and unattended while the owner waits for the car to warm up. Never leave a vehicle unlocked or running unattended. Criminals can easily disguise themselves in winter. Govender offers the following security tips: • Leave outside lights on if you know you’re going to get home after dark. • Petition alarms so that external beams can be set early in the evening, just after you get home. • Check the tensioning of electric fencing as it shrinks in colder weather and this can cause false alarms. • Link smoke detectors to your alarm system. Fires during winter can be caused by heaters, electrical appliances and the cosy fireplace left burning when you go to bed. • Be extra vigilant when leaving and arriving home. If you notice anything suspicious alert your security company or the SAPS immediately. - Supplied.

“Last year eThekwini was forced to operate at around 50% capacity after a contracts dispute with an unsuccessful contractor who took the matter to the High Court and stalled the municipality’s choice of 12 successful contractors from attending electrical faults for a number of months,” said Wienand. Wienand said the legal dispute created a four-week backlog of roughly 6000 complaints the municipality is only now beginning to address. “The heavy rain over the weekend

also did considerable damage to municipal infrastructure, which now requires emergency repair. “This, of course, pushes issues with faulty street lights behind other more urgent concerns,” he added. Wienand went on to say that he encourages residents to phone the municipality and file a complaint, which he said, the municipality will attend to. “The rain damage this weekend set us back another two weeks and I apologise on behalf of the municipality for delays as a result of contractual and weather issues. “As ratepayers, people have every right to phone the municipality and address their concerns, and we at eThekwini are committed to the improvement of service delivery,” said Wienand.

Big names headed to new Ballito Junction WEEKLY REPORTER

CHECKERS is the latest leading retailer to confirm it will open in Ballito Junction as part of the centre’s major redevelop ment and expansion that will see the mall growing to eight times its current size. Ballito Junction’s sixth anchor ten ant, Checkers, joins new additions Woolworths, Edgars and Game and its existing anchors Pick n Pay and Dis Chem. The massive redevelopment will open in March 2017. Owned and developed by South Afri can property companies, Menlyn Maine Investment Holdings and Flanagan & Gerard Property Development and In vestment, Ballito Junction Regional Mall is the major expansion of an exist ing 10 000sqm shopping centre. The expansion project was set to grow the mall to a sizeable 65,000sqm. Now, by adding Checkers, Ballito Junc tion will increase in size to 80 000sqm. In addition, the owners of Ballito Junction are increasing their investment in the development from R1.4 billion to R1.6 billion. Patrick Flanagan, jointchairman of Flanagan & Gerard, explains the plans for Ballito Junction originally sought to develop a regional mall. Now, with Checkers, it will function

as the dominant superregional mall in its area. “Ballito Junction’s new, bigger size and added retail variety gives it greater market traction and boosts its appeal across a wider market,” says Flanagan. Carl Jankowitz, director at Menlyn Maine, said: “The addition of Checkers to Ballito Junction is significant in that it creates a meaningful consolidation of retail in Ballito in one magnificent worldclass mall.” A confident answer to the rapid growth of the thriving Ballito and KwaZ uluNatal North Coast region, Ballito Junction is set to change the face of shopping and entertainment for the area’s residents. The mall’s 130store shopping va riety will also feature an appealing array of international brands, inde pendent retailers and entertainment for the entire family, to complement its powerful lineup of popular na tional retailers. The large expansion project is making excellent progress. Earth works began in March last year and the exciting new mall will open its doors in March 2017 as the only large dominant mall immediately north of the new King Shaka International Airport. In addition to the massive new

calling to let the municipality know. “I was given a reference number and no one has come to replace the lights. “We, as residents, are frustrated because street lights also provide security to residential areas situated on main roads,” said Bucks. Roy Wienand, head of electricity at eThekwini Municipality said cable theft is “endemic” in the Durban and North Coast areas and that this is one of the reasons for the faulty lights in different areas.

T 85 years of age Ahmed Dawjee had the distinction of being the oldest person to complete the Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk last year. He’s likely to hold onto that title this year, as he’s already signed up for the event on 22 May. “I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” he says. Dawjee’s grandson, Ozayr Dawjee, says this will be his grandfather’s fifth Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk. “In 2012 I had registered for the big walk and my grandfather heard about it on the radio and was very keen, so he asked me to register him too. He enjoyed it very much and has insisted I register him every year since.” Dawjee senior completed the 10km distance last year. “It was wonderful. There were so many people there, I really enjoyed it. I did it at my own pace. I wasn’t tired at all.” He and his family will be doing the 10km again this year. Born in 1930, Dawjee will be celebrating his 86th birthday a few days after the event on 27 May. Asked about how he stays is such good shape, the Overport resident re-

Murder and rape suspect arrested >> Man apprehended a few days later by police GRAHAM BARCLAY

T

ONGAAT police have arrested a man in connection with the rape and murder of a 35-yearold woman in the area. On the morning of Friday, 1 May, the body of Tongaat resident Precious Mlaba was found in the sugarcane fields around Tongaat. According to police some of her possessions including her shoes, underwear and handbag were lying nearby. Warrant officer Manisha Maharaj-Marie said police arrested the suspect only a few days after Mlaba’s body was discovered. “Crime Prevention officer Sergeant TM Govender, worked extensively in the area to locate the suspect,” said Maharaj-Marie. “He received information of the

suspect leaving the area on the morning of Saturday, 2 May to travel to the Eastern Cape, where the suspect is originally from,” she added. Sergeant Govender tracked a friend of the suspected killer to Flagstaff in the Eastern Cape, who was then able to point out where his residence was, added MaharajMarie. On Tuesday, 3 May, Govender - together with Sergeant Brian Moonsamy , Constable SV Khathi and Detective-Constable MK Khuz-

wayo, proceeded to the small Eastern Cape town, where the suspect was apprehended at his place of residence. The suspect cannot be named for legal reasons as he is still awaiting trial. “Tongaat Police management would like to commend Sergeant TM Govender and his team for their excellent work and ongoing , tireless efforts to ensure the apprehension of the suspect,” said MaharajMarie.

IPSS Medical Rescue paramedic, Paul Herbst is winched up the bridge with the critically in jured driver.

VERULAM

WEEKLY REPORTER A WHITE bakkie crashed through the metal railing of the Maidstone Bridge in Tongaat and fell into the dry riverbed below on Thursday morning last week. IPSS Medical Rescue paramedic, Paul Herbst said the vehicle veered off the bridge after colliding with an oncoming car. The driver of the car was unharmed following the incident, but the driver of the bakkie sustained critical injuries which required urgent attention from paramedics when they arrived at the scene of the crash. “Due to the patient’s extensive injuries, he required advanced life support intervention before being transported to a nearby hospital,” said Herbst. “Our paramedics had to be lowered down from the bridge using specialised high angle equipment to gain access to the injured patient in the bakkie,” he added. Police K9 and Search and Rescue units were also called to assist in the recovery of the injured driver, who is currently being treated at Osindisweni Hospital near Verulam.

HOTOKAN Karate International South Africa (SKISA) held its glittering and glamorous Awards Dinner Banquet on Sunday, 1 May, held at the Durban University of Technology Campus Hall. Among the recipients of the Commendation Awards was Tonver president Guru Ramcharan for providing yeomen service in various facets of sport and community affairs. In his capacity as Tonver president, Ramcharan has, over the past 11 years, provided support to local school sports in the Tongaat and Verulam areas. healthy-living lifestyles and away from those vices that only bring doom and gloom in their lives,” said Pillay. “It is the work of teachers and organisations like Tonver that lead the way in providing opportunities to our learners in achieving their potential as sports and learning compliment each other,” he added. Ramcharan is no newcomer to sports. In addition to heading the most powerful school sports council in the country, he is involved in all areas of sport to provide holistic development to children. He also is a founder member of the Friendship Games, an annual athletics meet between Tonver, Phoessa and Cumberwood. In tears we saw you sinking, we watched you fade away. You faced your task with courage, your spirit did not bend. And still you kept on fighting until the very end. God saw you getting tired, when a cure was not to be, so he put his arms around you and whispered “Come to me” so when we saw you sleeping, so peaceful and free from pain. We could not wish you back, to suffer that again.
