A number of reasons to celebrate

See inside for this week’s Coastal Weekly

MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime

continues to destroy some of our communities. However, the one thing that continues to stand undefeated is the spirit of the Upper Highway community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

own challenges this year, but as we enter 2015 we renew our pledge to you to do our very best to continue to be the most accurate, fair and balanced source of news, opinion, features, sports and entertainment in the Upper Highway Area. We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. Kalisha Naicker Senior Journalist Hillcrest Fever

Tongaat pupil snatches Miss Teen Durban title ANDILE SITHOLE A SEVENTEEN-YEAR-OLD pupil from Seatides Combined, Ashleen Naidoo made history when she snatched the title of Miss Teen Durban last week. The Seatides resident said the win came as a surprise to her. “Two years ago I entered [another] competition and became a finalist. I lost in that competition, but that did not discourage me. It gave me motivation to try again. This year I entered the beauty pageant competition for the first time. I believe that there is nothing that can stop you from getting what you want. The sky is the limit.”

WO men were arrested and charged for fraud in Verulam after they were caught by police selling letters with the DA councillor’s signature and the eThekwini Municipality’s letterhead to residents on 5 December. The two suspects, aged 21 and 37, were arrested by Metro police at the Verulam testing ground in Ireland Street. According to the information received from the SAPS, Metro police received a tip-off about the men selling letters and set up a trap. According to the police and the DA councillor, the letters were used as proof of residence and the suspects targeted people who were from outside the Verulam area. The fraudulent letter confirmed that the person resides in Verulam.

The suspects were working for a driving school in Verulam and were caught selling letters to members of the public who had gone to them for their driving lessons. It is alleged that the suspects were selling these letters to their students for R50 each. DA PR councillor in Verulam, Chris Langa said he received a call from an anonymous source informing him about owners of a driving school who were selling letters to the people at Verulam testing ground. Langa said he immediately contacted Verulam SAPS and made a sworn affidavit that the letters with his signature were stolen from his office and leaked to outsiders. CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

ESIDENTS in Zamokuhle, upper Tongaat, have demanded that the municipality repair potholes on the D776 Road in the area that has not been tarred for more than 10 years. The disgruntled residents said the huge potholes on the D776 road are a major concern for the community and have become a hindrance to service delivery. A representative for the Zamokuhle community, Prakash Mathura told the Weekly that paramedics are unable to drive into the area due to the bad condition the road is in. “We do not get services from ambulances be-

cause of the bad conditions of the road. Even the police take long to respond to our complaints simply because our roads are full of potholes and it damages tyres. I have been communicating with officials from the Department of Transport and I was told that the budget that was allocated for D776 was used for another road. We understand that the road does not belong to eThekwini Municipality, but since we pay our rates to eThekwini I believe they must attend to this issue. I have repaired the suspension of my car three times. Every three months I have to repair it and I lost my clients because many of them have left the area due to the road.” Mathura said residents have suggested taking to the streets so that the municipality will take them seriously. “Some of the residents have suggested that we go on the street and protest so that the municipality will take us seriously. As residents we are not happy with the construction of the new road on Harry’s Farm leading to the informal settlement. The main road [D776], should have been given priority.” Bus owner Kishore Sathanlal (50) said: “I have suspended my service to the area due to the huge potholes on the road. HE Department of Trade and Industry has announced that members of the public have until today, 15 December,to submit written comments on the National Liquor Amendment Bill. The bill is intended to address the socio-economic impact of liquor, the slow pace of transformation, standardisation of key aspects of regulation and improved regulation in illegal and illicit alcohol as it is envisaged to eradicate the manufacturing and trading in illegal and illicit alcohol and the challenges with regards to regulatory capacity within the National Liquor Authority. In a statement issued by the minister of Trade and Industry, Rob Davies, on 3 October he said the state spends about R3.3 billion in a year on problems related to alcohol abuse. Davies said the proposal raised in the bill was a result of the benchmark done in other countries where it was proven that raising the alcohol consumption age assisted in reducing negative incidences related to alcohol consumption. Davies said South Africa has the highest level of alcohol consumption in the world. Meanwhile, KZN police in partnership with eThekwini Municipality and officials from Department of Trade and Industry, held a joint liquor awareness and enforcement operation in the north of Durban over the weekend. Eleven illegal trading outlets were shut down and more than 800 litres of alcohol were confiscated. Phoenix station commander brigadier Bafana Ndlovu said the operation was undertaken as a proactive response to the festive season. “Our objective with this mission was to ensure that we maintain the safety of our communities particularly the townships of Phoenix and Inanda that experience a high surge of violent crimes where alcohol abuse is a common factor. I was also impressed by the positive response from all role players and find it evident that this operation was a success as we recorded no cases of violent crimes during this operation.” The three-day operation led to the inspection of 13 premises with eight notices issued to the traders that were found to be in contravention of the liquor licence conditions. Members of the public are urged to submit comments by sending an email to nramphele@thedti.gov.za

Langa said after he investigated further he found that residents from outside Verulam were desperate to book their licence and were looking for ‘shortcuts’ therefore they purchased these letters at the testing station confirming their residence. “Members of the public who have fallen victim to this scam must come forward and report either to the police or to my office.” Langa suspected that the arrested suspects were working in cahoots with one of the employees working from his office. “We are disappointed at the manner in which the driving schools are looting the unsuspecting members of the community. I would like to commend the police for a job well done in arresting the suspects.” KZN police spokesperson, colonel Thembeka Mbhele confirmed that two suspects were arrested. “The suspects were charged for fraud and appeared at the Verulam Magistrate’s court on 6 December. The case was adjourned to 23 January 2017.”

Thompson was treated for his injuries on scene before being transported to Umhlan ga Hospital. He has suffered multiple frac tures to his arm. He was scheduled to have surgery to his arm last week. Drunk driver arrested after fleeing accident scene: Verulam – A drunk driver who crashed into a vehicle that was fuelling up at a service station in Verulam on 5 December was arrested by members of Rusa after he fled the scene of the accident. Officers were dispatched to the service station on Umdloti Beach Road after receiv ing a call from employees reporting the inci dent. Upon arrival it was established that a VW Polo entered the property at high speed and collided into a Toyota Corolla that was fuelling up. The driver of the VW Polo then abandoned his vehicle and fled the scene. Staff provided officers with a descrip tion of the driver and while on patrol in the area officers noticed the man fleeing to wards Waterloo. Officers stopped the driver and found him to be under the influence of alcohol. He was placed under arrest and handed over to authorities for further inves tigation. Supplied.

Two stabbed by community: Verulam Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) were dispatched to an informal set tlement in Canelands after receiving re ports of a stabbing on 4 December. Upon arrival one person was found lying in a pathway. He had sustained a stab wound to his lower back. Paramedics stabi lised him on the scene before transporting him to a local hospital. A second person who had also been stabbed was rushed privately to hospital. It is alleged that the injured were stabbed by members of the community who accused them of being criminals. Reaction officer knocked by drunk driver: Verulam – A drunk driver was arrested by members of Reaction Unit South Africa after he knocked into a reaction officer on Fairview Drive, Brindhaven during the early parts of Sunday morning on 5 December. At approximately 12.30pm, officer Wes ley Thompson was on patrol on Fairview Drive when the driver of a Kia Sorento veered into his lane and knocked him off his motorbike. The injured officer circulated the number plate of the vehicle which failed to stop on scene. Officers noticed the vehicle travelling at a high speed towards Oaklands. Officers managed to cut the vehicle off and bring it

THEKWINI Mayor Zandile Gumede launched the festive season plan at the Tongaat Indoor Sports Centre last week to ensure that the city is ready for the festive season. The city aims to clamp down on lawlessness and prevent road accidents by deploying additional law enforcement officers. The peak season plan will be fully functional from 7 December to 20 January next year. Mayor Zandile Gumede said: “The safety of our patrons is a key priority as promised in my inaugural speech, thus eThekwini Municipality and other stakeholders have put specialised

City is ready for the festive season measures in place to ensure that locals and visitors alike enjoy a safe and hassle free stay in our beautiful city.” The municipality said in a statement, police enforcement will be out in full force. Metro police, SAPS, beach law enforcement and additional security personnel will be conducting several road safety checks. Additional security guards will be hired to work with the police on the

beachfront and are expected to be deployed at the key hotspots. Gumede added: “Let me also remind visitors that our region is blessed to have a multitude of attractions from the beaches to the Valley of a Thousand Hills, to pristine Inanda Dam for the adventure seeker to the Inanda Heritage route for those who wish to delve into the rich cultural diversity and history that our city enjoys. “I urge you to visit each attraction

and enjoy the city’s offering that makes it a world class city and an award winning tourist destination.” Lifeguards will be on duty at the beaches from 6am to 7pm and swimmers are urged to listen to the life guards all the time. The municipality urged parents to get their children wristbands with contact details when going to the beach. Police spokesperson in Tongaat

Warrant Officer Manisha MaharajMarie warned the members of the public to be vigilant when parking their vehicles. “Most people are being robbed or even hijacked while stationary in their vehicles. The public must ensure their car is always locked. They must also avoid parking a vehicle where there are no security officers guarding the cars.”

More than 50 sexual offenders sentenced VARIOUS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units in KwaZulu-Natal have secured 59 convictions on various sexual related cases. According to SAPS spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele a total of 365 suspects were arrested in November 2016 for various cases like, rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, domestic violence, child neglect, attempted murder, house robbery, contravening of the protection order and other crimes. “Nine life term imprisonments were handed to the convicted accused and a total of 550 years in jail. The accused have been convicted by various courts in the province after they were found guilty of these sexual related offences,” said Mbhele. The KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa applauded these successes achieved by the FCS units. “These sentences prove that our units will make sure that all the sexual offenders are locked behind the bars for a very long time,” he said. - Supplied.

Spending money this festive season JUGGIE GOVENDER OF EAST COAST FINANCIAL SERVICES (PTY) LTD – FSP 44760

M

ANY of us have romanticised the idea of winning the lotto. The fanta sies that follow are usually vivid and specific: luxury cars, extensive travelling and beachside property tend to feature prominently. The more ordinary lotto of a yearend bonus or 13th cheque is mentally spent way before we even get it, and often in very poor ways. If you’ve worked hard and receive a bo nus, or any other unexpected income, think differently about how you use your mo ney. Use the opportunity to look at your fi nances overall: are you directing enough to wards your future and is your debt under control? Maximise your windfall by allocating a portion to payoff some outstanding debt and try to save some before you start spending. Reflection, planning and not drinking too much of the holiday season KoolAid can go some way to giving a windfall lon gevity. This will almost definitely make you happier for longer than spending more on

stuff you don’t need. Reflect Remembering and drawing learnings from past instances where you received a lump sum can help you make decisions in a clear frame of mind. When was the last time you received a windfall? What did you spend it on? Did it have a lasting effect? How did it make you feel before you spent it? How did you feel after spending it? You may find that buyer’s remorse is the only lasting impression of misspent money. Remembering the rollercoaster of emo tions – for example, the excitement in No vember before an endofyear bonus and the lean days of January – may help you re sist the temptation to be rash. Have a plan Expecting things to just work them selves out is not a good strategy for ap proaching December. Plan how you will al locate the money before the rush of blood to the wallet that happens when the bonus arrives. Ideally, make sure that the first person who benefits from your good fortune is your future self: pay yourself first with a new in vestment or make an additional contribu tion to an existing investment before you start spending.

If you have to... A small treat can make investing the major portion of your money an easier pill to swallow. It may also help to keep in mind that in vesting is just deferred spending – you put money away to grow so that it can meet your needs in the future. Eventually that money should return to you as spending; delaying your gratification just means that you may have more to spend later. The lure of the festive season The holiday season sale decorations that seem to go up earlier and earlier each year are often the signal that starts the spending spree of the festive season. The buzz, the crowds, the festive lights are a part of a theatre that encourages us to open our wallets. Watch out for some of the ways retailers target us during this time of the year: Baskets at the door. A basket means more to fill. We subconsciously aim to fill up our shopping baskets without thinking about it – a trolley doubly so. When you’re looking for one or two things don’t pick up a bas ket. Stores are designed to make you spend. Ever wondered why the needless in

Needy families get food hampers >> Councillor’s Christmas wish fulfilled ANDILE SITHOLE

C .

HRISTMAS came early for some needy families in Tongaat after the ward 61 councillor Dolly Munien in conjunction with an engineering company donated groceries to the needy families last Friday. The first beneficiary was Narainsamy Thanthoni (52) from Flamingo Heights. “Due to the unemployment rate that we have in our community, many families are struggling to make ends meet. “We are grateful to our councillor for making this generous donation to us,” said Thanthoni. Another beneficiary was Rachel Dlamini (57), a resident from Hambanathi.

“I am very grateful to be among the people who received the groceries and this will help us feed our children. As a breadwinner at home everything is on me and it is my responsibility to ensure that my children have something to eat everyday.” A representative from Aurecon Consulting Engineers Ricky Moodley said: “We donated 15 food hampers to the office of the councillor so that she could identify needy people among her community who will be the beneficiaries.” Munien said: “The engineering company asked me what I wanted for Christmas and I told them that whatever they were willing to donate it must be given to the community that I represent.”

All new Subaru Impreza wins 2016–2017 Car of the Year Japan FUJI Heavy Industries Ltd (FHI), the manufacturer of Subaru automobiles, is pleased to announce that the all-new Subaru Impreza has been named 2016–2017 Car of the Year Japan. This is the second time Subaru has been awarded the honor, following the

Legacy’s win in 2003. Based on the Subaru Global Platform, the all-new Subaru Impreza aims to offer the utmost “Enjoyment and Peace of Mind” driving experience to all drivers and passengers, with an array of new technologies that greatly

enhance all-around safety as well as dynamic and static quality feel. It is the first car ever produced by a Japanese brand to include a pedestrian protection airbag as standard*. In about a month since its launch on October 13 in Japan, the new Impreza outsold its monthly sales target of 2,500 units by more than fourfold, with 11,050 orders. Demand from customers switching from other brands has been especially notable, representing 51% of all orders and indicating that new Impreza is attracting an ever-wider range of customers in Japan. “It is a great honor that the Impreza has been recognised with this distinctive award,” said Yasuyuki Yoshinaga, president and CEO of FHI. “I would like to thank our customers, suppliers and shareholders for their continued support for Subaru and I am grateful to all those who contributed to this achievement. We will continue to enhance our efforts to offer an ‘enjoyment and peace of mind’ driving experience to all customers.” 2016–2017 Car of the Year Japan Awards Passenger cars officially announced or launched in Japan between November 1, 2015, and October 31, 2016, with projected sales of at least 500 units are eligible. In addition to the Car of the Year Japan and Import Car of the Year prizes, awards are granted in the Innovation, Emotional, and Small Mobility categories. - Supplied. * Japanese specifications

WEEKLY

weeklywheels The new lexus.

What’s in the new Lexus IS N

EVER out of place, and never out of sight. That is the beauty of owning a Lexus IS. There are some things common to many human beings, regardless of their creed. A sense of style and good taste, and products that are like an exten sion of their personality or lifestyle are just some of these. Lives of modern men and women are in a permanent state of transition: from work to the gym and then on to the grocery stores… or from doing school runs to golf days and football matches. The 2017 Lexus IS takes it all in its stride – it looks sporty without taking away from its class. Locally, the Lexus IS lineup is available as an IS 200t with the recently launched twolitre turbo motor, and the IS 350 F SPORT utilising the revered 3.5litre quad cam V6. There’s an option of an E or EX grade for the 200t. The big news though is that these 2017 models receive a more ag gressive exterior and an upscaled interior with updated infotainment system. The up grades also include a more imposing grille with new headlights. The rear gets more

pronounced LED taillights and allnew rec tangularstyled chrome exhaust tips. The revised 2017 Lexus IS range follows a celebration of one million global sales. However, it’s not difficult to understand its global success: the IS model lineup starts out with features we appreciate every day, including comfortable, quiet cabins and confidenceinspiring driving manners. These are all packaged in a body that is just the right size: big enough for occupants and their luggage yet compact enough to make life simple in standard parking spaces and tight city driving. The vice president of Marketing at Lexus South Africa, Glenn Crompton says: “The Lexus IS has established a strong reputa tion over four generations because of its trendsetting design. All the improvements on the 2017 model have been made with the aim of enhancing driver and occupant expe rience.” The entire front fascia of the IS has un dergone a transformation, highlighted by new headlamps, larger air intakes in the front bumper, and a daring evolution of the

PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Lexus spindle grille. The air intake elements seem to flow off the fenders and frame a new grille that folds back at a higher point, changing its proportions and emphasising a more roadhugging stance. Lexus has also improved the user friendliness of the IS interior. A customise mode has been added to the Drive Mode Se lect for F Sport that is activated by pressing the dial switch, and the Active Cruise Con trol switch has been simplified to onestep activation with a prolonged (at least one second) press of the main cruise control switch. An ‘Enter’ button has been added to the side of the Remote Touch Interface (EX and F SPORT) on the centre console, making it easier to use. On the centre of the dash

board, the audio and ventilation control panel has been revised so that it fits neatly between the knee bolsters; a new hairline finish to its surface provides both a high quality feel and improved appearance. The 2017 IS model lineup continues with three grades, including the IS 200t E and EX, and IS 350 F Sport – all available in RWD. The IS 200t models feature a 2.0li tre twinscroll turbocharged inline fourcyl inder engine with intercooler. This super smooth powerplant produces 180kW and quickly builds up a wide torque plateau of 350Nm@4400rpm. Variable Valve Timing intelligent – Wide (VVTiW) allows the en gine to switch between the Otto and Atkin son combustion cycles to maximise effi ciency. The D4ST fuel injection system

combines a highpressure direct fuel injec tion system with a lowpressure portinjec tion system. The IS 200t comes equipped exclusively with the eightspeed Sport Direct Shift (SPDS) automatic transmission that inte grates advanced Gforce Artificial Intelli gence (GAI) system to choose gears intui tively. Steering wheel paddle shifters are al so available for those who prefer to do the shift themselves. The IS 350 F SPORT delivers dazzling performance from a 3.5litre V6 that produ ces 233kW and 378Nm of peak torque. This model uses the eightspeed SPDS auto matic transmission. A Drive Mode Select system features up to four driving modes to tailor the car’s combination of economy, comfort, performance and handling char acteristics. All IS sedans feature ECO, NOR MAL, and SPORT modes. But the F SPORT also adds SPORT S+, Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS), and Adaptive Variable Suspension for optimal handling and supe rior ride quality. The front double wishbone suspension has a new forged aluminium lower arm as sembly which delivers a 49% increase in ri gidity compared to the steel member it re places, and a new No1 bush. Together these elements offer a marked improvement in steering response at cruising speeds. The front system also has a new upper support bush, a revised coil spring rate, new shock absorber components and a revised damp er setting for improved ride comfort.
