A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime

continues to destroy some of our communities. However, the one thing that continues to stand undefeated is the spirit of the Upper Highway community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

own challenges this year, but as we enter 2015 we renew our pledge to you to do our very best to continue to be the most accurate, fair and balanced source of news, opinion, features, sports and entertainment in the Upper Highway Area. We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. Kalisha Naicker Senior Journalist Hillcrest Fever

Zerotolerance for illegal dumping >> Those found guilty of illegal dumping could face heavy penalties ANDILE SITHOLE

A

STERN warning is being sent to those who illegally dump unwanted waste in Verulam and Tongaat. The new ward 106 councillor vowed to take legal action against people and companies dumping in prohibited areas in Riyadh and uMdloti in Verulam. Councillor Johnson Chetty said that the municipality has taken a zero tolerance against illegal dumping in all areas in the eThekwini Municipality. “I intend on working intimately with law enforcement because the suspects should be

accountable for their actions. The municipal by-laws make provision for a R5000 fine for offenders. This is a stiff penalty but it should be a suitable deterrent. The residents of our suburbs have the right to live in a clean and litter-free environment,” he said. Chetty appealed to the residents to be vigilant and proactive in eliminating the scourge of illegal dumping from their communities. “Residents cannot afford to live in an environment that is not conducive. I am optimistic that the residents will join me in my campaign,” he added. He said that the culprits involved in illegal dumping have no respect for the law, although there are visible signs restricting people from dumping refuse.

Parents, teachers, pupils and the police at a launch of school safety committee at Fairbreeze Combined School.

>> Role players address youth problems and mobilize pupils ANDILE SITHOLE

T

HE Tongaat SAPS in partnership with other stakeholders launched the Fairbreeze Combined School Safety Committee recently in order to assist teachers identify problems that pupils encounter at schools. The committee comprises pupils representing schools, teachers, principals, parents and the police. The intention of the committee is to familiarise pupils in all schools in Tongaat with social issues that affect the society. Fairbreeze Secondary School principal, Ash Maharaj said the focus of the committee is to create a safe and conducive environment for pupils in schools. “We are looking at how we can assist our pupils with problems that they experience in school and in their communities,” he said. Maharaj said that the committee will be looking at other issues that affect the youth. “Substance abuse is one of the things that we will be looking at. Our youth end up abusing drugs due to peer pressure, but through this committee we anticipate to implant new

ideas in those who have become victims of substance abuse. “I honestly believe that the community must be united and face challenges that affect our youth together. We launched the programme to show our youngsters that we care for them and we are willing to bring in experts from different NGOs to address matters pertaining to drug abuse. They need our guidance because they are our future leaders,” he said. Social work manager for Tongaat Child and Family Welfare Society Jo Moodley said that there are programmes in place to empower youngsters. “We launched the Teenagers

Against Drugs Abuse at Tongaat schools in a bid to root out substance abuse in the community. Under this project pupils from each school were selected to encourage their peers to refrain from using drugs. We also have youth groups to encourage and urge our children to stay away from drugs,” she said. Tongaat SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Manisha Maharaj-Marie said: “It is indeed an honour to have such project in our community. We hope that working together with all relevant stakeholders will allow us to accomplish our goal - which is to create a safe environment for the youth,” she said.

She said that the idea was conceived after the police received complaints ranging from substance abuse and bullying at schools.

very shocking because the people who allegedly commit this crime are affluent people and not the residents from the informal settlements,” she said. Residents can report illegal dumping by calling eThekwini Municipality on 031 311 8804.

“Brazen dumpers still flout the law. To add insult to injury there is a dump site on the bank of the Umdloti River in Riyadh Township in Verulam with severe repercussions to the ecosystem of the marine environment. “The other dumping site is at the corner of Charnwood and Valley View Drive in Riyadh in Verulam. It has been going on for many years. I engaged the Health Department who were instrumental in locating the owners of the property. The owners of the property promptly engaged the services of a security company to prevent further dumping,” said Chetty. The owners also demanded that the guilty parties remove the garbage, he added. “On 1 September I witnessed a bakkie off loading refuse further down the road. The driver of the vehicle showed no remorse for his actions.” Head of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) Prem Balram said his officers responded on a call out about illegal dumping in Verulam recently. “When we arrived at the scene we found drugs that were dumped outside a government hospital. Most of the time people who are generally committing this kind of crime are government organisations and companies. This is a huge problem in Phoenix, Verulam and Tongaat. Reaction Unit South Africa sent letters to the members of the community to refrain from illegal dumping because it is against the law,” he said. Balram said that in a recent incident Rusa ofDesigner brands ficers responded to a call out and found a body stocked are: hidden underneath a dump site. ATIONAL Literacy Day is celebrated throughout the world with the aim to promote literacy and inculcate the habit of reading and writing in the community. North coast residents converged at the Tongaat Central Library last week to share ideas about the significance of promoting a culture of reading and writing. During a special live broadcast on Lotus FM, guest speakers at the function stressed the importance of primary education at lower levels as it creates a solid and basic understanding to young children. Ganas Govender (63), a member of Fairbreeze Senior Citizens Club, said: “Being acquainted with books gives you an opportunity to be a better person even though you did not have a chance to go to school.” Former ward 61 councillor Michael Abraham said: “A good reader makes a good leader. We need good leaders in our community. The youth in particular must engage in reading because the unemployment rate is very high in South Africa,” he said. The purpose of the literacy programme is to promote social change and development through learning. Vigie Padayachee from the Tongaat library said: “We celebrate our heri-

We have furthermore engaged schools to encourage those who have not been part of the library to join us. Our goal is to show the members of the community that the library is not a place to keep books, rather a lake of knowledge where you can acquire learning skills and advance yourself.” Professor Christa van der Walt from the Stellenbosch University told the Weekly that older people can learn to become literate in terms of electronic media and relying on a community of people who help each other. “This shows that it is not enough to have adult literacy classes, but you need a community that supports and continues the development of literacy [also digital literacy] outside the classroom. That is true for children too. It is not enough to learn to read and write at school, but reading needs to continue outside of the classroom in the form of storybooks, par-

ents reading to the children or older children reading to the younger ones,” she said. Van der Walt said that literacy makes a person more employable. “When I look at teacher training programmes, I am concerned that universities try to change teaching practises that we regard as unproductive, but schools resist these efforts by telling student teachers to forget everything they were taught at the university. No change can come about with that attitude. “By saying this, teachers who have been in the system for a long time pull new teachers into a culture that perpetuates bad or ineffective teaching habits. I am not saying this is the case in all schools, but it seems to be the case in many schools and this is why literacy levels do not improve. Of course, universities do not get it right either so there needs to be a better partnership between universities and schools so that the current systems can change.” she said.

Van der Walt believes that the culture of reading and writing must be instilled in children at an early age in order to implant the love and attitude of reading. She said that exposing children to storybooks at an early age has an advantage of increasing the love for reading and set them up for success for the rest of their lives. “If the children can improve their reading ability by reading outside of school too, they will overcome their dislike of reading. Storybooks and even storytelling is incredibly important to teach children narrative structure and to understand concepts like empathy with others. Their imaginations are fired and they become willing to create their own stories and this develops language fluency.” She added that the insufficient number of Grade R classes in some communities contributes to the increased apathy towards reading among young children. She urged South African teachers to encourage pupils to read storybooks. “A lack of Grade R classes, poverty, parents and guardians who cannot add to the child’s literacy experiences outside of school, the introduction of English as a language of learning and teaching in Grade 4 or earlier, all these factors work against literacy being developed sufficiently. “It seems to me that the curriculum, advisers and the Department of Basic Education are doing everything they can, but they cannot do much against these other factors. “Of course they can help schools to change the policy of introducing English as the language of learning and teaching in Grade 4, but I do not see this happening anytime soon,” she said.

Victim stabbed during robbery: Verulam A Malawian national was stabbed multiple times during a robbery near the Verulam Testing Grounds on Friday 9 September. At approximately 7am members of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) were dispatched to the scene after receiving several calls from the public requesting assistance for the injured man. Upon arrival the 36-year-old victim was found to have sustained six stab wounds to various parts of his body. He was treated on scene before being transported to a local hospital. It is alleged that the victim and a friend, who are residents of Waterloo, were on their way to work in the Chubbies Garage area when they decided to take a short cut from Umdloti Beach Road to the R102. As they entered the bush they were accosted by three suspects who were armed with knives. The suspects began assaulting the friends. One of them managed to escape while his friend attempted to fight off their attackers. The suspects then stabbed the man multiple times before robbing him of his Huawei cellphone and fleeing the scene in an unknown direction. Officers patrolled the area in search of the suspects however no arrests were made Vehicle crashes after losing tyre: Verulam A 31-year-old woman was injured after the bakkie she was travelling in crashed on the south bound lane of the R102 in Verulam on Friday 9 September. At approximately 9am members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to the scene after receiving several calls from the public reporting the incident. Upon arrival an Opel Corsa bakkie was found blocking the right lane. The driver sustained moderate injuries and was treated on scene before being transported to a medical facility. It is alleged that as the Ntuzuma resident was travelling down the R102 her left hand side back tyre came off the vehicle. The bakkie then spun out of control before crashing into the metal barrier separating the north and south bound lane. Biker injured in crash: King Shaka International Airport At approximately 3.45am on 10 September members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to the King Shaka International Airport intersection after receiving reports of a motor bike collision. Upon arrival a 49-year-old man was found to have sustained moderate injuries after he fell off his motorbike. He was treated on scene before being transported to a local hospital. Details surrounding the accident have yet to be established. Driver flees accident scene: Verulam At approximately 4pm on Saturday 10 September members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to the R102 near the Canelands intersection in Verulam after receiving reports of a motor vehicle collision. Upon arrival a Toyota Corolla was found to have collided into a Toyota Hilux bakkie. The occupants of both vehicles were not injured in the collision. It is alleged that as the Toyota Corolla was travelling in the north bound lane of the R102 the driver lost control of the vehicle before crossing over the centre median and colliding into the Toyota Hilux bakkie in the south bound lane. The driver of the Toyota Corolla abandoned his vehicle and fled the scene leaving his passenger behind. - Supplied. For more crime updates join our Facebook page: Reaction Unit South Africa

WEEKLY

T

HE warm days of spring are here again and as welcome as the warmth and sunshine might be, it also signifies the start of spring allergy season. 1. Know what you are allergic to: You may think you know what’s causing your allergy symptoms, but an allergy specialist (allergist) may be able to help identify your triggers. An allergist can perform tests to pinpoint the cause of your suffering and then find the right treatment to stop it. 2. Get over-the-counter medication: If you know you’re prone to sniffles and sneezes as the weather warms up, now is the time to stock up on allergy medications, don’t forget to also look in the homeopathic and natural medicine aisles for relief. But you’ll still need to see your doctor if you take prescription-only drugs to ease your allergies. 3. Wash hands frequently: Develop a healthy hand hygiene routine by frequently washing hands with soap and running water for at least 30 seconds to remove clinging pollens and keep hands germ free. Don’t touch your already sensitive eyes with dirty hands and try rinsing eyes with cool water after coming indoors to help minimize the effects of

Fighting spring allergies

pollen. Shower and wash hair at night to prevent pollens from getting into bedding. 4. Regularly cleaning your home: Spring cleaning sounds like a lot of work, but ridding your home, car, office or playroom of bacteria, mold, dust and other grime can keep you free of spring colds and help you cope better with seasonal allergies. Plus, all that window washing and floor sweeping will burn some calories too. 5. Pets and allergies can go hand in hand: A tip for dog or cat owners who are allergic to fur: bathe your pets frequently. Your pet’s saliva on the fur from cleaning itself or on your skin from slobbery kisses can also incite an allergy reaction. In addition to bathing your pet, remember to wash your hands soon after you’ve had direct contact with your furry friend. Although there is no real cure for seasonal allergies, it is possible to relieve symptoms and still enjoy the start of the warm season and all its beauty. Remember, frequent handwashing with warm water and soap is one of the simplest and most effective ways to stay healthy. Also cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze to combat the spread of any infections. - Health24

DIABETIC patients are more likely to develop periodontal disease, which in turn can increase blood sugar and dia betic complications. People with diabetes are more like ly to have periodontal disease than people without diabetes, probably be cause people with diabetes are more susceptible to contracting infections. In fact, periodontal disease is often considered a complication of diabe tes. Those people who don’t have their diabetes under control are especially at risk. The relationship between diabetes and periodontal disease goes both ways periodontal disease may make it more difficult for people who have diabetes to control their blood sugar. Severe periodontal disease can in crease blood sugar, contributing to in creased periods of time when the body functions with a high blood sugar.

This puts people with diabetes at increased risk for diabetic complica tions. Periodontal disease is a condition that involves the gum and bone tissue that support the teeth and is characterised by the presence of tartar (mineralized plaque), inflamed bleeding gum tissue, halitosis (bad breathe) and sensitive teeth that may appear long and with a degree of mo bility. Periodontal disease is a progres sive condition and if left unmanaged, it can easily result in oral sepsis and complete loss of dentition. Once diagnosed by a dental practi tioner treatment should initiate im mediately followed by regular review and reinforcement of oral hygiene practice. Dental Surgeon: Dr Sudhir Rathi ram (BDent ther UKZN, BDS MEDUN SA) Supplied

10 easy ways to build activity into your workday SITTING at your desk all day increases your risk for heart attack, stroke and even death, but moving throughout the day will help you reduce the risk. Sitting at your desk all day can be bad for your health, but it’s easy to reduce that risk, an expert says. Get moving at least once an hour The American Heart Association recommends at least 75 minutes of vigorous exercise or 150 minutes of low-level exercise every week. That breaks down to 30 minutes a day, five days a week. “The good news is those 30 minutes can be anything that you incorporate into your work day,” Dr Daniel Vigil said in a news release from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). “The point is to move throughout the day, preferably at least once an hour,” he added. Vigil is an associate clinical professor of family medicine and orthopaedic surgery at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine. Need motivation to get out of the chair? Remember that inactivity puts you at increased risk for heart attack, stroke and even death.

These tips will help you to be more active: 1. Move your rubbish bin and other essentials away from your desk. 2. Walk to a colleague’s desk instead of emailing or phoning. 3. Take the stairs to a bathroom on another floor. 4. Use resistance bands to do foot curls and arm stretches at your desk. 5. Take the stairs instead of the lift. 6. When standing in a queue, stretch your neck and shoulders, and bend your knees for flexibility. 7. If a meeting lasts longer than 90 minutes, take a five-minute stretch break halfway through. 8. Park your car further from the building. 9. If you take public transport, get off a few blocks before your destination and walk the rest of the way. 10. Download apps that encourage you to be active, such as those that count your daily steps or remind you to move while at your desk. - Health24

Our shameful politicians

RANJENI MUNUSAMY

S

OUTH Africa seems to have an oversupply of shameful politicians. Perhaps it is preferable to have many public representatives with terrible qualities than to be cursed with one truly abominable politician such as the U.S.’s Donald Trump. It is most disappointing that an organisation like the ANC, with a legend-

ary history and generations of outstanding leaders, now has shameful characters in positions of leadership. Even when people fall from grace, they survive politically and continue to serve in Parliament and the leadership of the ANC. Take, for example, Humphrey Mmemezi, the former Gauteng Local Government and Housing MEC. He was steeped in scandal for, among other things, abusing his governmentissued credit card on an official visit to Malaysia, using state funds to buy a painting worth R10 000 from McDonald’s and signing off on allowances for his daughter and five other employees of the Mogale City Municipality. Despite this, Mmemezi was elected to the ANC’s highest decision-making body, the national executive committee, and was moved from Gauteng to become a member of Parliament. This shows that the ANC ignores its own resolutions to purge its ranks of corrupt and discredited people, and instead rewards them. But Mmemezi

I spent a year in another secondary school and could not settle in because it did not live up to my expectations both in terms of discipline and academic work. Because my parents were ex-students of Buffelsdale Secondary I decided to try the school. It is a decision that I do not regret. Discipline of pupils is constantly monitored and the school provides a

is not out of place in Parliament, where mediocrity and chaos reign. Sometimes it is utterly shocking what MPs say in the House. The minister of Energy, Tina Joemat-Pettersson, will probably go down in history for uttering the most confounding statement in Parliament. During her speech in this year’s State of the Nation Address debate, she said: “When a cow gives birth to a fire, that cow will lick that fire. You know why? When a mother gives birth to a fire, she will lick that fire, because she gave birth to that fire. When a fire burns, it rains, and the earth gets wet. Fire burns, but when it rains, the earth gets wet.” It is statements like these that have turned the South African Parliament into a joke, as people care less whether what they say makes sense or represents their constituencies. The level of disrespect for Parliament and its role in holding the executive to account escalated this week during a question session for minis-

ters. The Democratic Alliance (DA) had requested that an urgent question be put to the minister of Mineral Resources, Mosebenzi Zwane, about his false claim last week that Cabinet had approved his recommendation for a judicial inquiry into the closure of the Gupta family’s business accounts by South Africa’s banks. The claim was repudiated by the Presidency, which said Zwane made the statement in his “personal capacity” and it did not “reflect the position or views of Cabinet, the Presidency or government”. So when Zwane appeared in Parliament this week, you would think that he would at least be remorseful and acknowledge that he had falsified a Cabinet resolution. Even if he left it to President Jacob Zuma to decide whether he continues to serve in Cabinet or not, he should have displayed some respect for the institution of Parliament and the electorate by apologising for what he had done.

holistic education. I am able to compare and can say that the quality of teaching is amazing. The teachers bring integrity, respect and dignity into the classroom in their interactions with us. The compassion and professionalism of the teachers constantly leaves me in awe. Mathematics is generally a problematic subject, but at Buffelsdale my teacher is amazing. I thus endorse the sentiments of Professor Coopoosamy not to judge the school by popular false sentiments that are expressed by individuals that are not aware of the changed ethos at the school.

But Zwane, like some others who occupy those benches in the National Assembly, has no shame. He avoided answering questions about why he had lied and instead tried to justify the need for a judicial inquiry into the banks. Despite having been dressed down by the Presidency and the ANC, which called his behaviour “outrageous, appalling and shocking”, Zwane continued to do the bidding of his friends, the Guptas. Speaker Baleka Mbete shielded Zwane from having to answer questions from the opposition and another ANC MP, Bheki Hadebe, argued that the principle of “separation of powers” means that a member of the executive does not have to answer to Parliament. This is a fundamental distortion of the accountability regime. It is a grand irony that MPs address each other as “honourable” when many of them are far from it. • Ranjeni Munusamy is a political journal ist and commentator for the Daily Maver ick. ranjeni.munusamy@gmail.com

Dire implications for the country THE stand-off between Minister of Finance Pravin Gordhan and the Hawks has dire implications for our country. The allegations that the minister knew about a rogue unit that operated within his earlier tenure needs solid evidence and maybe needs to be tested in our courts of law. If the harassment of the minister continues, the already volatile rand is going to depreciate further, leading to the intensification of poverty. The possibility of a credit rating downgrade to junk status seems probable.

The timing of the investigation, just after the local government elections, seems strategic. This comes at a time after a recent Cabinet lekgotla that gives President Jacob Zuma control over spending in the state-owned enterprises. The actions of the Hawks have once again created uncertainties and instability in the South African financial markets. When this happens, investors take their money out of the country, putting added pressure on the already volatile rand. The poor are affected the most as a result of increases in com-

modity prices. The minister needs to be left alone to do his job. His apex priority is to avoid a downgrade by rating agencies. This cannot be achieved if his mind is unsettled. Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa has supported the minister, saying his integrity is unquestionable. He has also said that when a government works well, it should not wage war against itself. Let’s hope sanity prevails in the best interests of our country. VIJAY SURUJPAL

Govt must do what is right and find money THERE can be nothing more important in this country that spending money on education. If one goes back to the evil Bantu Education Act foisted upon the country by the National Party, it was an extremely poor education offered to black people, and to that extent I agree fully with the students’ demands for no increase in fees. I do not agree with the rioting or

buildings being burnt down, but on the other hand, the ANC and President Jacob Zuma have not shown themselves to be interested in listening to the hardship of their own people. Zuma could have been a great president but he has proved to be a disaster, like so many leaders in the world today who are putting state money in their pockets, money that should have been spent on education and not for the bene-

fit of politicians. So a message to Zuma and his greedy pals: do what is right for once in your lives, for the sake of our students who need to be well-educated. I fully support the students’ demand for no increase in fees for universities. Find the money. M.R. WOOLLAM

>> 390 Jehovah’s Witness congregation members baptized at threeday convention

Vinesh and Shantal Ramdhani, residents of Redcliffe in Verulam, were part of the 390 that were baptized on Satur day at the Convention. They are seen with their two sons Adrian and Damien.

15 September 2016

CORES of congregation members of Jehovah’s Witnesses converged at the Moses Mabhida Stadium for a three-day convention which started on 9 September. Congregation members coming from various parts of KZN including Verulam and Tongaat took part in the convention. Residents of Redcliffe in Verulam Vinesh and Shantall Ramdhani were part of 390 people that were baptized on 10 September. The third day convention of Jehovah’s Witnesses with the theme “Remain Loyal to Jehovah,” opened on Friday morning with an address by the chairperson Errol Charters. Charters quoted the scriptures in Psalm 113:1-3 and expressed the blessings. Over the three days, reference was made extensively to the Bible and the examples of those who were loyal and those not loyal were presented to the audience by means of videos, talks and

symposiums which were delivered in English, Zulu and sign language simultaneously. The three-day programme featured 49 presentations, 35 video segments plus two short films which were shown on Saturday and Sunday. Trevor Lee, programme overseer for the Durban Regional Convention of Jehovah’s Witnesses, said: “Loyalty is an essential part of any healthy relationship. “The convention this year featured content that helped people develop stronger bonds with friends, family members and, above all, with God. We are confident that all who attended enjoyed the programme. “The highlight on Saturday was the baptism. Before getting baptized one needs to understand Bible principles and the Bible’s message. “This is accomplished by means of a Bible study, and getting baptized is a personal choice and not forced on to individuals. The total number baptized was 390.” The attendance for Friday morning was 17 740, Saturday morning 23 389 and Sunday morning 27 745. Needy families benefit on recycling project WEEKLY REPORTER THE recycling project initiated by the Tongaat Central Library brings food to the table for those in need. Vigie Padayachee from the Tongaat library said that the intention of the initiative, that is part of the library’s outreach programmes, aims to raise funds through the recycling project and donate to the community. The latest beneficiary in the project is Savy Naidoo (49) from Belvedere in Tongaat. The enthusiastic Naidoo thanked the Tongaat library for initiating projects that assist needy families in Tongaat. Padayachee said: “Through the recycling project we have managed to feed families and those coming from previously disadvantaged communities. “We therefore encourage the

members of the community to donate old books, old newspapers, school materials and magazines to assist us in making our initiative a success. We appeal to the members to donate because the money generated through the programme goes to the poor families.” She added that after conducting a survey in Tongaat and surrounding areas she deemed it proper to have a project that would help poor people in the area. “Our intention is to lend a helping hand to our community at large and identify families that are struggling financially. But the success of the project relies on the donations that we receive. The library cannot do it alone and we therefore need the support from the members of the community.” For more details, contact the Tongaat Central Library on 032 944 4734.

Mr Subiah Naidoo 07/03/1927 - 01/11/2015 He never looked for praises. He was never one to boast. He just went on quietly working. For the ones he loved most, His dreams were seldom spoken. his wants were very few, And most of the time his worries went unspoken too. He was there a firm foundation through all our storms of life. A sturdy hand to hold onto in time of stress and strife. A true friend we could turn to when times were good or bad. One of our greatest blessings. The man that we called DAD.

Yearly Memorial Service of the Late Subiah Naidoo will take place at the Mountview Civic Centre, Verulam on Saturday 17/09/2016 at 2:45 pm. Sadly missed by his wife Jodthie, Brother Naraine, children, daughter-in-law, sons-in-law, grandchildren, great grandchildren & a host of family & friends.

weeklywheels Hyundai launches refined, dynamic newgeneration i30 >> Car designed to deliver great value to all types of drivers

T

HE Hyundai Motor Company has taken the wraps off a refined new-generation i30 with improved dynamics, fresh styling and a new range of engines when it unveiled its new flagship hatchback on 7 September. The new i30, which will form the main attraction at the Hyundai Motor Company’s exhibition at the Paris Motor Show at the end of September, should reach South African shores towards the middle of 2017. The new i30 is Hyundai’s European “DNA car” – representing the core of the brand in that part of the world – and provides an answer to changing contemporary values and customer preferences toward technology driven solutions, individuality in style and flexibility. It is a car that is designed and built to deliver great value to single people,

families, and young and old. With these attributes, and a new range of engines to choose from, the new i30 should also attract a growing number of customers in South Africa. Designed in Europe, and tested on the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife to fine-tune its efficient and dynamic ride, it promises to be a smart and rewarding choice – not only for those who seek appealing exterior lines and a comfortable and very safe cabin, but also a car that gives the driver great satisfaction on the road. The new-generation i30 family will also feature the first high performance model under Hyundai Motor’s N brand going into production in 2017. This high-performance model is likely to get power from a high-output two-litre turbocharged petrol engine. “Our designers are driven by passion and enthusiasm bringing pride 80-Point Technical Inspection Professional Vehicle Reconditioning Vehicle History Integrity Check Full Service History Mileage Certified

The development engineers of Hyundai Motor Europe’s Technical Centre in Germany enhanced the driving dynamics of the new i30 in a rigorous testing programme throughout Europe and on the famous Nürburgring Nordschleife. VOLKSWAGEN continues to drive forward with the regionalisation of the global automotive business. The brand is planning to start pro duction of the Polo Vivo in Kenya at the end of 2016. An agreement to that effect was signed in Nairobi today by the Kenyan Government and Thomas Schaefer, Chairman and Managing Director of Volkswagen South Afri ca in the presence of Kenyan Presi dent H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta. This is an important step by the Volkswagen brand towards en gaging further in new emerging markets – with the right products and knowhow from the region. Third factory in Africa Volkswagen is expanding its commitment in Africa with local production of the Polo Vivo in the Kenyan city of Thika near Nairobi. The project which will be jointly re alised with the importer DT Dobie, will be Volkswagen’s third produc tion facility in Africa – alongside the South African factory and a lo cal production facility in Nigeria. It is planned to build up to 5000 units of the Polo Vivo per year at the plant operated by Kenya Vehi

cle Manufacturers (KVM) from 2017. Schaefer said: “We are taking the successful Polo Vivo from South Africa to Kenya to leverage the enormous growth potential of the African automobile market and participate in its positive de velopment. This compact model is the bestselling car in the SubSa haran region – so it is the ideal en try model for the promising Ken yan market. “With this move, we are strengthening the brand’s overall position in Africa and taking an im portant step towards expanding our commitment in the region.” President Kenyatta said: “The investment by the Volkswagen Group in Kenya is a key milestone in my administration’s determined push to grow the manufacturing base and industrialised the na tion.” Longstanding links In addition to production of the Polo Vivo from the end of 2016 it is also planned to establish a local training centre to qualify produc tion workers and provide further training. The centre will initially fo

cus on the needs of the Volkswag en production team. Later on it is planned to provide basic training for young people to learn general industrial skills, thereby increasing employment opportunities in the region in general. Kenya is one of Africa’s emerg ing markets. The country plays a prominent role among East African nations and with a GDP of some $63billion, it is one of the strong est economies in the East African Community (EAC). Kenya is also an important transit country for trade throughout East Africa. The good economic relations between Ken ya and Germany also benefit from ongoing strategic political sup port. A long tradition links Volks wagen and Kenya: back in the 1960s, Volkswagen assembled the Beetle in Kenya. The brand is now returning to the country, initially with the Polo Vivo. It is also planned to review local production of further Volkswagen models should the new vehicle market show positive development. Wheels24

BAND of 30 Checkout Verulam Falcons members participated in the popular SAPS half marathon and 10km races over the weekend. Fabulous cool overcast conditions welcomed runners to the scenic coastal route as participants ran over a double lap route on the Durban promenade, Ushaka and Point Waterfront. The perfect weather conditions were complemented by a flat and fast course. However, rusty race feet and at times strong southerly winds made for difficult running at the back end of the race. Lanky Falcons’ runner, Mongi Tshikitiswa led Team Falcons in the half marathon finishing in 96 minutes.
