A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. Hawks swoop down on Williams Gang >> Shootout in Tongaat leads to arrest GRAHAM BARCLAY

F

OUR “dangerous criminals” thought to be members of the notorious ‘Williams Gang’ were arrested by Hawks officers last Friday morning, 13 May after an intense shootout. The gang is known throughout the KwaZulu-Natal province for carrying out a number of armed robberies and has been wanted by law enforcement for a long time. Hawks spokesperson, Lieutenant Simphiwe Mhlongo said the arrest took place in Tongaat after officers received information the four suspects were connected to the gang. “The gang is likely based in Pietermaritzburg, but they have also been part of many criminal operations in Durban and have committed crimes across the province,” said Mhlongo, who added that the four men arrested

are part of a wider chain of operation within the gang. Members of the Hawks, the Provincial Task Team, the Organised Crime Unit and SAPS K9 units received intelligence early on Friday morning of four suspects travelling in a silver-grey VW Golf who had allegedly stolen a Toyota Hilux and were on their way to commit another robbery. The Golf was intercepted by police on the N2 highway near Tongaat, when the suspects began firing at police. In the shootout that followed, one of the suspects was injured and all four were subdued and then arrested by Hawks officers with the assistance of SAPS K9 units. “The Golf and the stolen Hilux, along with a number of devices used to steal motor vehicles were recovered by police after the shootout and the arrests of these criminals will go a long

way in bringing other alleged members of the gang to justice,” said Mhlongo. The KZN provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni praised the Hawks and SAPS for the part they played in the successful apprehension of the suspects. “I want to congratulate all the members who were involved in this operation, including our partners from the security companies who are part of project ‘CAT’,” said Ngobeni. “It is pleasing to note that such joint collaborations are bearing fruit, and this will serve as a wake-up call to criminals, showing them that their days are numbered. “We will not tolerate thugs operating in such a manner in our province and we will ensure that we bring them to their knees through such partnerships,” she added.

China injects R150m into Dube fibre optics plant GRAHAM BARCLAY

J

UBILATION and celebration were the themes of the day at Dube Tradeport last Friday, 13 May, when Yangzte Optics Africa Cable (YOAC) announced plans to open KwaZulu-Natal’s first fibre optic cable manufacturing facility. The R150m investment into the construction of this plant will create just 45 jobs for unskilled South African workers, and it will be based at the Dube Tradeport on the KZN North Coast. The plant is the first of “many” Chinese investments in the province and seeks to upgrade KwaZulu-Natal’s internet infrastructure. The plant will be open and fully operational by January 2017. The investment also won the full support and praise of eThekwini Municipality councillor, Logie Naidoo and KZN department of economic development, tourism and environmental affairs (EDTEA) MEC, Michael Mabuyakhulu, who welcome the investment as a great way of strengthening Sino-

South African trade relations. “The construction of this new facility will go very far in extending investment relations between South Africa and China, and eradicating poverty and unemployment in the North Coast region,” said Naidoo. Investment South Africa’s acting deputy director general, Yunus Hoosen also welcomed the investment and the efficiency with which the construction of the facility is already been managed. “The time taken from the point this project was proposed to the stage of construction we are at right now is only six months, and after a total time of 12 months; this plant will be up and running,” said Hoosen, who added that the plant is the perfect investment for South Africa’s digital economy. JSE listed South African company, Mustek are the BEE partner in the deal, with a small shareholding in the facility and its operations. The majority shareholding is held by YOAC, which is a state-owned company in the control of the Communist

Party in Beijing. Wang Jian Zhou, consulate general of the Chinese Embassy in South Africa, said YOAC is “an important stateowned company looking to grow Chinese interests in Africa.” “By investing in Africa, China wants to make the African continent greater. There are many challenges that come with investing in a foreign country, which is why we need the support of our South African partners,” said Wang, who emphasised that YOAC is “environmentally friendly”. “The MEC and the KZN government have created a great investment atmosphere and this project must and will succeed in order to strengthen investor confidence and attract more Chinese companies to invest in KZN,” he added. R150m is a lot of money and the question has to be asked of who will really benefit from this deal. Unemployment is officially at 20.8% in KwaZuluNatal, and higher still at 25.2% in South Africa, with the vast majority of South Africans continuing to live be-

low the bread-line. Amid endless calls from South Africans for improved service delivery, housing, electricity, water and sanitation; improved internet connection is at the bottom of the priority list for millions of people. Pieter Viljoun, CEO of YOAC, said the investment will create 150 highskilled jobs, with a few allocated posi-

tions to artisanal and unskilled workers. “We will, of course, need factory workers, and 45 of the 150 jobs will be set aside for unskilled workers, who will be trained internally by YOAC. There will also be 20-30 job opportunities at artisan level for those with technical skills,” said Viljoun. According to Yunus Hoosen, the goal of Investment SA and the KZN government is to give 90% of South Africans citizens access to fibre optic broadband by 2090, with the hope of future Chinese investments in KZN.

Feedy Needy’s WEEKLY Wheelchair distribution GRAHAM BARCLAY 2016

L

OCAL non-profit organisation, Feedy Needy welcomed a number of people to their headquarters at Brailsford Primary School in Phoenix recently, where the charity handed out a number of brand new wheelchairs to those in need on Saturday 23 April 2016. The need for wheelchairs in our local area is staggering and the charity drive held last month sought to make the lives of disabled and elderly people just a little easier. One of the main sponsors of the drive was Kessie Nair; director of Top Talk Marketing, who attended the handover of the wheelchairs. Nair was purportedly “in tears” as the wheelchairs were distributed to the various deserving recipients, who were mainly elderly individuals and young people with physical disabilities. Anesh Singh, principal of the Golden Steps NPO for academically impaired pupils also attended the event in support of Feedy Needy’s collection campaign. The organisation will continue to distribute wheelchairs, walkers and other pieces of equipment to supply more people with disabilities in the future. Feedy Needy’s Prathna Simmadurai said the central ethos of the charity is the belief that nothing should hold an individual back from leading a normal life.

Top Talk Marketing director Kessie Nair (right) and Golden Steps prin cipal Anesh Singh handing out a brand new wheel chair.

“Already suffering from the pain, isolation and indignity of a physical disability, many children endure further burdens such as being forced to live on the ground or wait to be carried around by loved ones in order for their most basic needs to be met,” said Simmadurai. “Feedy Needy chose wheelchairs because the organisation recognises the value of mobility for those with physical challenges and we wanted to better equip them to handle the difficulties that life throws at them,” she added. Simmadurai said that Feedy Needy wishes to also provide the “transforming gift of mobility” to children with disabilities. “Children learn to appreci-

ate their own abilities as they get older and we want to embrace the challenge of enabling many children to realise their full potential while raising funds to provide wheelchairs to hundreds of children who would otherwise remain immobile.” “Our vision is to provide mobility to those in need, transform the lives of children with disabilities, to open doors for them to access education and employment opportunities and to give back the dignity and hope so many disabled people have lost through their disabilities,” said Simmadurai. She also thanked, on behalf of Feedy Needy, all sponsors and volunteers who made the day possible.

BORN on May 12, 1820, Florence Nightingale is considered by many to be the mother of modern nursing after her positive contribution to the status of nurses in society.

Nurses Day was established in January 1972 and designated May 12 as its official date of recognition in respect of Florence Nightingale’s birthday. Netcare Alberlito Hospital is proud to have their very own “Florence Nightingale”; Matron Anju Maharaj whose birthday is on the 11 May, only one day before Nightingale’s. The dangerous serial rapist and sexual offender was eventually arrested when a member of the community policing forum (CPF) in the area apprehended him and handed him over to the authorities. In light of Mthembu’s sentence, advocate Bonginkosi Mbokazi told the court that the accused was a serial rapist as the offences were planned and calculated. “Mthembu traumatised his victims. One victim was raped and stabbed while she was carrying her child, while another was forced to pre-

pare food for him after he had raped her,” said Mbokazi. Advocate Mbokazi also presented the court with DNA results and fingerprint matches linking Mthembu to the rapes and placing him at the scene of the crime. Some of the victims also positively identified him during an identity parade. For his series of violent crimes, Mthembu was sentenced to five terms of life imprisonment for rape, with an additional six years for housebreaking with intent to steal and theft, six years for assault, 12 months for theft, 15

years for sexual assault and a further 75 years imprisonment for housebreaking with intent to rob and robbery with aggravating circumstances. Director of Public Prosecutions, advocate Noko said the prosecutions authority is very pleased with the conviction of Mthembu. “We are very pleased with the conviction and sentence of this dangerous criminal. I am certain this will convey the necessary deterrent message. This sentence re-affirms the serious light in which we view crimes of this nature,” said Noko.

Saving for your child’s education and investing in their future

Small political parties must close shop

BY JUGGIE GOVENDER OF EAST COAST FINANCIAL SERVICES (PTY) LTD – FSP 44760

MY assessment of the political situation is that the small political parties must close up shop. The contest in the local government elections will be a threehorse race between the ANC, DA and EFF. These parties have picked themselves as those that deserve our votes. In recent times many small political parties have mushroomed and made promises, knowing they lack the capacity to deliver. The game is up now and they have overstayed their welcome. Voting for them will be throwing away votes. The ANC’s advantage is that it enjoys a strong bond with the poor and downtrodden. It also boasts a credible history of service to the people since 1912. Its commitment to the development of this country is unquestionable. The DA, on other hand, is viewed as an elitist party. It has so far failed to win the hearts of the masses. It has also annoyed many people for always going to the courts to complain about the government. They view the DA’s actions as attempts to rule this country through unfair means. Judging by the way in which the EFF behaves in Parliament, it seems that people who are anarchists will vote for it. If the EFF manages to win one city, it will be interesting to see how a city of anarchists functions.

IF you are a parent then opening up your first term’s school fee statement was probably a keen reminder of just how expensive schooling can be. Providing your children with a good education is non-negotiable these days as this sets them up for a good career in the future. So how do you achieve your dream of financially providing for the best education possible for your loved ones? First things first - you need to start saving as early as possible in your child’s life. A Model C school education could cost anywhere up to R20 000 a year, private school from R59 000 to R92 000 a year, bearing in mind these figures change yearly. Then, once your child has completed matric, you could see yourself pay more than R50 000 a year for further study at a technikon or university. These may seem impossible to pre-

pare for in advance, but starting to save when your child is born will put you in a very good position to pay these costs when they arise. Dealing with the rising cost of living expenses such as food, petrol and electricity to name just a few, saving for your children’s education is probably far from an immediate need when they are still in nappies. If you think you can’t find R500 a month, often it is just a matter of becoming aware of your spending patterns and giving up on some non-essential items so that you can find saving pockets. People are encouraged to make conscious, informed purchasing or investment decisions rather than impulsively spending their hard-earned cash on non-essentials. It is human nature for us to want instant gratification. But the truth is that whenever we spend money we could have put to good use by saving, we are in fact losing out on a big opportunity – the opportunity to invest that money and make it work for us by harnessing the power of compounding.

A shining beacon

But the more she distinguished herself as a fearless fighter against corruption, the more she was derided by the ANC. She has had to withstand attacks from several people in the party, including the secretary general, Gwede Mantashe, and his deputy Jessie Duarte, members of Parliament and the ANC women’s and youth leagues. She was accused of being a spy and using her investigations to be a media star. Where do you begin? ‘Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. Those who understand it, earn it… those who don’t, pay it.’ - Albert Einstein Compound interest allows money to earn an investment return on the return you have already received. Over time this compounds and results in significant financial gain for the investor. The growth may seem slow at first, but as time passes and the investment returns build up, you will experience exponential growth in the value of your initial investment, putting you in a strong position to be able to comfortably afford all those educational costs further down the line. It’s not just parents who can benefit from the power of compound interest. By investing just R500 a month in a unit trust or making a lump sum investment starting at R10 000 or both, you can invest for any financial goal that is important to you. The bigger your investment, the bigger the potential return and the faster you get to realise your dreams and build future

tor will not be someone who is as fiercely independent and courageous as Madonsela. This week, it emerged that the hostility against Madonsela could be more sinister, with her receiving a tip-off that a Western Cape gang boss has been paid R740 000 to arrange three hitmen to kill her. With Madonsela being so close to retirement as public protector, it seems bizarre that anyone would want her murdered now. But the antagonism towards Madonsela is palpable, and she is blamed for the embarrassment caused to President Jacob Zuma and the ANC on the Nkandla matter. According to Madonsela, the threat against her is not being treat with seriousness by the police and she is clearly concerned about her safety. It is difficult to judge whether there is substance to the threat against her or whether this is another tactic to pressure Madonsela into submission. That can only be established if the police give her complaint proper attention. Either way, it is not a matter the public should treat lightly. It is not only Madonsela’s life that could be under threat but the future integrity of her office. This could be a tactic to intimidate her successor and the staff of the Public Protector’s Office to ensure that they are more compliant in future. Whoever it is that will be chosen to step into Madonsela’s shoes will be under tremendous pressure not to tread on the toes of the politically powerful in the way she did. The threat could also be a warning to anyone else in society who decides to stand up against abuses of the state. Madonsela’s departure in October should not result in the credibility of yet another institution being compromised.

wealth. We’ve all heard the saying ‘good things come to those who wait’ so tap into that discipline you know is there and patiently watch your money compound over time because the satisfaction you are likely to get from seeing the financial results down the line are sure to outweigh the short-term gratification you could have received from that new mountain bike, stiletto heels, plasma TV or car. Artisans hold the answer THE latest statistics reveal a slight decline of youth living below the poverty line. While this is good news, the status quo remains the same. The youth are still living in dire poverty and terrible conditions, and the unemployment rate is still growing. Unless the government devises appropriate programmes, the current state of living of our youth will persist. This is a reality for the youth that, for whatever reason, could not complete school and find themselves unskilled and unemployable. We believe that if the unskilled youth are exposed to education programmes tailored to suit them, the poverty gap would be bridged substantially. However, access to higher education system is also a challenge, given the high cost of university education which led to the #FeesMustFall Campaign last year, and the lack of capacity at tertiary institutions. This calls for an alternative, which are occupational qualifications. These qualifications are accessible to everyone, including those who could not finish school. They are quality assured by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO), and include the Electrical Line Mechanic qualification. The national Decade of Artisans initiative can only be realised if the youth consider occupational qualifications as a viable option for the betterment of their lives, and alleviation of poverty.

Don’t tease the dogs CHILDREN, and even some adults, find amusement in teasing dogs, causing dogs that would not usually be aggressive to get agitated. I have witnessed this many times. Teasing threatens the dogs’ sense of safety and security. If I was taunted and bullied constantly by someone in the street or over the fence, I’d probably also become annoyed. This can also cause disturbance to others. Please can The Witness and other papers run an educational awareness article to teach children and adults to ignore dogs, to resist the urge to stand in the road or in driveways and stare, mimic-bark or throw stones, and rather just ignore the dogs and go past quietly. They must not hang over walls and look into other yards, which in itself is an invasion of privacy. This foolish behaviour is often the root cause of problems. K. TIVERS

ADVERTORIAL:

Witty Tots WITTY Tots Montessori was established in 2011 by the Buffelsdale Muslim Society and in conjunction with directress from inception Khatija Khan. Our aim is to offer quality, affordable early childhood development for all children from three to six years old. Our motto is: ‘holistic development’ - offering physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual and cognitive development according to the individual needs of the child. Thus helping children to become responsible confident human beings. Our prepared environment is safe, stimulating and child friendly with authentic Montessori material, encouraging, sense of order co-ordination, concentration and independence. Our school readiness (Grade R) programme helps children to achieve beyond the caps requirements. We offer Wakco ball - a complete physical education programme which the children love. This is co-ordinated by coach Edrees Hassan who trains for the Department of Sports and Recreation. He is also an examiner and moderator of sports for KZN. On 28 May we are hosting their fifth annual sports and fun day where our children get to show their physical capabilities. It is also a fund raising event which helps us keep our fees to a bare minimum, as running a school of this nature incures huge costs. We sincerely thank our parents, well-wishers and volunteers for their selfless support and assistance in making this day possible every year. - Supplied

FOCUS ON VERULAM Welcome to Verulam WEEKLY

ADVERTORIAL: Verulam Dialysis

>> A beautiful shopping destination

V

ERULAM is a town situated 27 kilometres north of Durban and is now part of the eThekwini Municipality area. In 1850 a party of 400 Methodists settled here and formed the town. The town was then named after the Earl of Verulam, patron of the Brits who settled here.

Today, Verulam is inhabited mainly by people of Indian descent. The population is over 63 000. There are several primary and secondary schools in the area. The town contains densely populated residential and industrial areas which includes shopping centres, mosques, temples and churches. On the outskirts are large farming

areas and several built-up and rural townships. There has been a slow but steady progress modernizing the town by providing adequate infrastructure to the rural areas. Shops in and around the Verulam shopping area range from pharmacies, retail clothing stores, take-away outlets, gift shops, fitment centres, salons, hardware, glass specialists and the Verulam fresh produce market that attracts people from all over the KZN.

SDMS Midas

VERULAM Dialysis Centre was born in January 2015 out of local resident Zul aka Khan Bobat in servicing her commu nity because there were no dialysis units in the area. Our highly specialised equipment gives patients the best and latest in cut ting edge dialysis. Our extensive net work with nephrolo gist makes Verulam Dialysis Centre a pa tient –centric centre, putting patients’ needs first.
