MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). Inspirational women on a mission

GRAHAM BARCLAY graham.barclay@media24.com

O

NE African elephant is killed for its tusks every 15 minutes in Africa. In just three years, an unbelievable 100 000 elephants were killed across the continent, and now a group of 10 brave and inspirational women are setting off on a mission of their own to tackle the issue of poaching head-on. Led by Carla Geyser, the Elephant Ignite Expedition team will travel 10 000 kilometres through 10 African countries as they aim to raise aware-

ness and funds in the fight against elephant poaching and the illegal trafficking and sale of ivory. Elephant Ignite is the first ever allfemale expedition through Africa and its originality has captured the imagination of international filmmakers, Earth Touch, who will be covering their gruelling 13-week expedition and publishing it as an online series. Graeme Duane, creative director at Earth Touch, said that there was no more fitting expedition team than the Elephant Ignite ladies. “How fitting indeed that this all-fe-

male expeditionary team is taking a stand for elephants, which is, itself; a matriarchal species and we wish them all the best as they embark on their incredible journey,” said Duane. The team will set off from Sibaya Casino on national Women’s Day, 9 August, and make their way north; travelling through Swaziland, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Botswana to engage with conservation agencies, national parks and schools to understand the impact of elephant poaching around southern Africa and to share that message with local communities.

The ladies will then continue their mission as they travel through Namibia, Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania before reaching their last stop in Kenya. “The community upliftment work we will be doing is essential to the campaign for elephant conservation, as when people place value in their natural environment, they soon see a return on their investment; for themselves and their children,” said Geyser, who is also the founder of a non-profit organisation focused on conservation called the Blue Sky Society Trust. Supporters of the expedition can

donate to any of the six conservation projects selected by the Elephant Ignite team, with 100% of all funds to be entirely allocated to the fight against poaching and the education of local communities. Each member of the team has also self-financed their place on the expedition so that all money raised can go to the people and elephants in desperate need of it. “Every day we lose an average of two rangers, three rhinos and 96 elephants in the war against poaching and we have now reached a tipping point, with the death rate of Africa’s mega-fauna outweighing the birth rate,” said Geyser. The illegal trade in wildlife fetches $1.3 billion (R18.6 billion) around the world every year and it could mean that elephants, along with many other African species, will become extinct in our lifetimes.

Bus company pays tribute to slain driver >> Staff says Zakhe was a man of honour who will be missed GRAHAM BARCLAY

I

N the two weeks since his tragic murder, 44-year-old bus driver, Zakhe Gumede has left a gaping hole in the lives of his family, friends and work colleagues. Gumede was shot at close range and killed by an unknown man on Friday morning, 1 April while he was transporting passengers en route to Umhlanga on his Tongaat Circle bus. The bus then crashed down a small embankment, leaving a number of passengers injured. Witnesses of the incident claim to have overheard the shooter demanding money from Gumede before he was shot twice in the upper arm and jaw. Gumede was employed as a bus driver at the Tongaat Circle Bus Company (TCBC) for more than 10 years

ZAKHE WAS A VERY RE SPONSIBLE DRIVER WHO WAS ALWAYS KIND AND HARDWORKING. HE WAS ALSO VERY RE SPECTFUL OF OTHERS AND WAS DEFINITELY NOT THE VIOLENT TYPE IN ANY WAY. and according to friends, earned his reputation as a compassionate and gentle person. Vinesh Rugbeer, TCBC general manager and Gumede’s former employer, said he was a very good man who was well liked by everyone he

came into contact with. “Zakhe was a very responsible driver who was always kind and hardworking. “He was also very respectful of others and was definitely not the violent type in any way,” said Rugbeer, who said he and others at the company are in shock at the sudden and tragic death of their friend and colleague. Gumede’s murder is still under investigation with Tongaat police, who currently have no new leads as to the identity or whereabouts of his killer. The 44-year-old bus driver was also a beloved husband and father and the primary breadwinner for his family; leaving behind his wife and two children. “Zakhe’s wife and children are extremely traumatised at his loss, and he is sorely missed by everyone who knew and loved him,” said Rugbeer.

WEEKLY

Is modern life unnerving your nervous system? >> FASTPACED modern life is not for sissies. With continual social and work demands, 24/7 connectivity and media overload from videos, billboards, the internet and even cell phone spam, why are we surprised when our nervous system gets out of whack? Modern life explains Johannesburgbased clinical psychologist Dr Colinda Linde, has resulted in ‘a near constant activation of our nervous systems, processing sensory information and making constant choices, without much break.’ She adds, “Just because we’ve become used to a hectic lifestyle doesn’t mean it’s healthy or that our nervous system has adapted as rapidly as technology has evolved.” When your nervous system is out of sync, so are you!Neuroscientists often describe the nervous system as your body’s master computer. It continually regulates a myriad of functions and processes to keep you alive. But unlike a ‘real’ computer machine that cleverly powers down or goes into ‘sleep’ mode when you’re not using it, your mind and nervous system don’t actually do a great job at switching off easily. So what are the main lifestyle culprits that are most likely to unnerve our nervous system? Stress, injuries and chronic pain top the list. Stress You don’t have to be a woos to underestimate the impact of stress on your life. Did you know that stress-related factors cause 85% of all disease or illness, according to The American Institute of Stress (AIS)? Dr Bradley Kobsar, functional endocrinologist and clinical director at San Jose State University’s Health and Wellness Care Center explains when your body is under stress, the nervous system responds by increasing activity in the sympathetic nervous system. “When you face danger, your hypothalamus stimulates the pituitary gland. This triggers your body’s stress response to release a hormone called Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH).” After ACTH has signalled the adrenal glands to release the stress hormone cortisol, several physiological stress responses deal with the immediate danger. Once the threat has passed, other systems restore normal functioning in the body. The problem arises when stress is prolonged or chronic, according to the National Institute of Mental

Health (NIMH). This occurs when your body’s stress response continues after a threat has subsided or when your source of stress is constant. “The same nervous system chemicals that are life-saving in short bursts can suppress functions that aren’t needed for immediate survival. This causes a lowered immunity and prevents digestive, reproductive and excretory systems from working normally,” remarks NIMH in an online article. Injuries Some people are prone to having a nervous system that goes out of sync easily. Your body’s framework (bones, muscles, ligaments and joints) does a good job of protecting your nervous system, but any of these elements risk tearing, fracturing, excessive stretching or inflammation. When this happens, it can irritate the nervous system, causing injuries like pain, muscle spasm, loss of sensation or movement. Ignoring an injury or not taking care of it soon, is unwise, since it’s likely to get worse, not better! Chronic pain

CONTRACTED TO ALL MEDICAL AIDS

We’ve all experienced pain at some stage, that unpleasant sensory and emotional experience that The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) says is ‘associated with actual or potential tissue or cell damage.’ But chronic pain that persists longer than it should is another thing altogether! Remember, pain is very complex. It’s also subjective, so only you know exactly how pain feels when you experience it. Both the CNS central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system are involved in your perception of pain. When various parts of your body experience trauma or damage, special nervous system receptors called nociceptors pass on this information to your brain, which interprets these signals as pain. Chronic pain happens when injury or disease to nerve structures, abnormal body functions or degeneration causes these nociceptive signals to transmit continually. This triggers an unhealthy action that allows pain signals to be sent more easily. Calm your nerves If you want to avoid a long-term

toll on your nervous system, you need to change your lifestyle. Not always easy, but once we accept that self-destructive habits not only affect our mood and health but also the way our brains function, we’ll be able to do something about it, says holistic psychiatrist Dr Larry Momaya of USA-based Amen Clinics that specialises in neuro-psychiatry. As we recognise the value of stilling the mind, it’s no coincidence that previously “alternative” health practices like meditation, mindfulness and yoga are gaining popularity in mainstream health, says Johannesburg clinical psychologist Dr Colinda Linde. The most important thing, say mental health experts, is to find what lifestyle changes work for you. Their advice is not new; you simply need to look at it with new eyes. That means reducing your commitments if you’re overloaded, doing de-stressing activities or hobbies you enjoy, watching what you eat, getting enough sleep and staying physically active with regular aerobic exercise. - Health24

That lingering cough could be bronchitis IF you’re struggling to get rid of a persistent cough, you may have bronchitis and should probably book an appointment to see your doctor. If you have a cold that lasts a long time or a persist ent cough, you could have bronchitis and should see a doctor. Doctors are seeing a lot of cases of bronchitis at family practices, and though most cases are caused by the common cold virus or influenza virus, bronchitis can lead to more serious conditions, such as pneumo nia, which require medical treatment. Symptoms of bronchitis a serious disorder of the lower respiratory tract include fever, chills, chest con gestion and a productive cough that lasts more than five days. However, if the cough lasts two to three weeks, and there are more serious symptoms, such as chest pain, shortness of breath and wheezing, it could be an indi cator of an even more serious condition and you should see a healthcare provider. Many people assume when they are diagnosed with bronchitis that they need an antibiotic. However, bronchitis is commonly caused by a virus so antibiotics would not be helpful to patients. Treatment includes rest, fluids, a humidifier, fever and pain relievers and cough medication. If there is shortness of breath, difficulty in breath ing or wheezing, some patients may require breathing treatments with an inhaler or nebuliser. The patient may also need a short course of oral steroid medica tion. If breathing problems are severe, it’s best for the person to be evaluated in an emergency room. Health24

the international networks of the Durban FilmMart. Talents Durban will take place from 17 – 21 June as part of the 37th Durban International Film Festival (16 – 26 June). The overall 20 selected participants from across Africa will be given a chance to forge relationships in an intensive five day programme of oneon-one project consultation and industry networking activities with renowned mentors and professionals in the fields of production and distribution. The 9th edition of Talents Durban runs under the motto Degrees Of Separation: Connecting People And Story. Film has always had the almost magical ability to connect people with story. Whether that be one as familiar to you as a simple tale of romance or whether it be as far removed as life on other worlds, film blurs the borders of yours and transforms human existence into something that is shared. Talents Durban aims to connect African screenwriters, directors and film critics to recognise, explore and celebrate both the differences and similarities that make this connectedness through film and media possible. More than ever before, the re-designed programme will focus on quality content itself and delve into the adage of Africa having many sto-

Talents Durban aims to address and rectify the reality where these stories are often not told by those who have lived these experiences and what this does to either further separate or connect emerging audiences. Possible 17c to 18c petrol price increase in May EDWARD WEST A GRADUAL, but sustained strength in petroleum prices may result in a 17c to 18c per litre increase in the price of petrol next month, the Automobile Association (AA) said on Monday. The AA, commenting on unaudited mid-month data released by the Central Energy Fund (CEF), said on Monday that on the international market, diesel and petrol prices have risen since late February. The appreciation of the rand against the U.S. dollar had gone some way to offset this. This meant that local diesel and illuminating paraffin prices might decline at month end, while petrol was set to climb. Diesel and illuminating paraffin prices could drop 11c to 12c per litre.

“The exchange rate, and international oil prices, continue to be volatile, and the month-end picture could be quite different from the current one,” the AA said. Tumbling world oil prices caused world markets to slip and the rand to weaken yesterday. By mid-morning the price of North Sea Brent oil had dropped more than four percent to $41,38 (R602) a barrel after major oil producers in the Middle East failed to agree over the weekend on a plan to curb the global oil supply glut. The rand initially fell more than one percent to R14,75 to the dollar in line with the tumbling oil price, but recovered those losses to trade at R14,61 per dollar by mid-morning. The JSE followed world markets lower, but the losses were moderate

SHAKA Sea World staff members, Leandra Paverd and Presha Soogrim, have recently taken up the Penguin Waddle 2016 challenge and will be joining 14 other penguin lovers, in a walk – or waddle – from Gansbaai to Simon’s Town, all in honour of the endangered, endemic African penguin. Starting at sunrise on Monday, 11 April these passionate conservationists walked an average of 20km per day for six days and passed through Hermanus, Kleinmond, Gordons Bay and

Muizenberg, with their journey that ended on Saturday, 16 April at the Boulders Beach penguin colony in Simon’s Town. The 14 other conservationists accompanying them for this Penguin Promises Waddle for a Week event were members of the uShaka Sea World team as well as those from around the country. Paverd and Soogrim, both 25 , are in their final year of nature conservation studies. To prepare for the waddle walked along the uShaka Beach prom-

enade. Working with mammals and birds at uShaka, Paverd is outspoken about the effects of plastic pollution. She hopes to encourage her fellow South Africans to say “no thanks, I have my own” when offered a plastic shopping bag. Soogrim, a marine educator at uShaka Sea World, hoped that by taking the approximately 240 000 steps, she inspired others to take small everyday steps to help heal and protect the marine environment. Being a vegan with loads of meat-free recipes and ideas, she promotes a culture of eating less meat and endorses the meat free Monday initiative. “Lowering our carbon footprint is good for penguins and what’s good for penguins is good for people,” she says. The endangered African penguin is only found along the southern African coastline. They occur nowhere else in the world. Their distribution stretches from Namibia in the west, to Algoa Bay in the east. These birds face extinction in the wild as their numbers continue to decline dramatically. South Africans can help the African penguin by visiting www.pen guinpromises.com and choosing one or more of the listed suggestions and you will be on your way. - Supplied

Ways to prep for the Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk ENTRIES arestreaming in for the Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk on 22 May. If you haven’t already signed up, make sure you hurry as only the first 30 000 entries will be accepted. Enter online at www.ecr.co.za or at selected Totalsports stores. The annual event brings together people for a morning of exercise and great memories. Exercise improves heart health, lowers blood pressure, helps reduce cholesterol and blood glucose, helps to burn fat and maintain weight. Walking is low impact and a refreshing form of low intensity exercise. All four routes get under way at different times from uShaka Marine World and all 30 000 walkers will cross the finish line at People’s Park, Moses Mabhida Stadium. With around six weeks to go before the event, lifestyle and fitness expert, Lisa Raleigh, has these tips to make sure you’re well prepped!

• Get advice. Talk to your doctor first before starting a new fitness programme, especially if you haven’t exercised for a long time. • Choose wisely. Correct walking shoes are light and fit comfortably. Walking long distances can put strain on different parts of your body, so it’s good to invest in quality footwear for both your training and the walk. Check that they fit properly and wear them in before the big day to avoid blisters. • Dress smart. Wear comfortable, light, breathable clothes to avoid chafing. • Drink up. Hydrate well and make sure you eat something an hour before you train or do the walk. • Walk wisely. Keep a brisk pace to elevate your heart rate, but stay in a comfortable walking pace where you can still talk and not gasp for air. • Chin up. Maintain good posture

ORD Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) has added two more awards to its burgeoning trophy cabinet with the new Ford Ranger and all-new Ford Everest being voted the top vehicles in their respective segments by Drive Out / WegRy in its 2016 4x4 of the Year Awards. “As one of South Africa’s biggest 4x4 and overlanding magazines, the publication has a large following amongst off-road enthusiasts, and it is fantastic for two of our most important new models to dominate the Double Cab and SUV categories in its 2016 4x4 of the Year awards,” says Tracey Delate, General Marketing Manager, FMCSA. The Ford Ranger 3.2 TDCi XLT won the Double Cab of the Year title. The new Ranger was launched in October last year, boasting a fresh new design, a sophisticated all-new interior

with SYNC®2 and an 8-inch touchscreen display, advanced Electric Power Assisted Steering, improved quality and refinement, as well as enhanced fuel economy. While the Ranger has topped the highly competitive overall light commercial vehicle sales on three occasions over the past six months, and was the top-seller for six out of 12 months last year, it has dominated the popular double cab sector since 2014. “We know that the local double-cab 4x4 market is a hotly contested one, which makes the Ranger’s dominance even more remarkable,” said Jaco Kirsten, editor of Drive Out / WegRy. “The Ranger’s 3.2 litre Duratorq engine has already proved itself, and while the refreshed engine still develops the same amount of power as before, fuel consumption is improved. “The gearbox is also improved, but the biggest improvement has been the interior, which really impressed our staff. Then there are other attributes such as proven off-road ability and fresh, eyecatching styling,” Kirsten said. The all-new Ford Everest was another product that left a huge impression on the Drive Out / WegRy panel. Launched in September last year, the Everest redefined the sport utility vehicle segment, offering cutting-edge technologies matched to exceptional performance, all-round capability and value-for money. “We always expected that the new Everest was going to be a big step forward, but none of us really expected a leap of this magnitude,” Kirsten stated. “Apart from the beautiful styling and luxuriously appointed interior, the Terrain Management off-road system really distinguishes it from all its rivals. In fact, a case can be made that it now competes with some of the more established rivals in a higher, traditionally more expensive segment,” he added. - Supplied

Consistent Maharaj shines in MVP rankings >> Consistent performance makes him a matchwinner

UNFOIL Dolphins spinning allrounder Keshav Maharaj’s regular top performances for the Durban franchise throughout the recently concluded 2015/16 domestic season saw him claim the runners-up award in the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) Domestic Most Valuable Player rankings. The left-arm orthodox and hardhitting lower order batsman – who has recently also made a name for himself with his hugely improved efforts in the field – finished on 436 ranking points, 32 behind the Bizhub Highveld Lions’ Dwaine Pretorius and nine ahead of the VKB Knights’ Werner Coetsee. “I only found out that I was in the top five of the MVP rankings with about three weeks to go in the season,” explained Maharaj. “While it is obviously always nice to receive these sorts of accolades, I’d far rather finish tenth in the rankings and help win a trophy for the Dolphins,” he added. While second place in the RAM Slam T20 Challenge was as close as Durban franchise came to silverware – something Maharaj, like many of his team mates, had set himself as a goal for the season – his regular contributions with bat and ball as well as in the field were pleasing for the former Northwood High School pupil. With ball in hand, Maharaj claimed 56 wickets across all three formats. His 36 Sunfoil Series and 12 RAM Slam T20 scalps was the highest for Sunfoil Dolphins in those two campaigns – while he also chipped in 532 handy runs with the bat, often scored at a run-a-ball or better. “It is always nice to do your art as best you can,” he said of his bowling efforts. “I worked really hard on my batting in the pre-season as I wanted to contribute a lot more with the bat this season so it was good to be able to do

Keshav Maharaj. PHOTO: GAMEPLAN MEDIA

this on occasion and nice to see all the hard work is starting to pay off.” Maharaj’s vastly improved fielding – which saw him claim eight franchise catches in 2015/16 – may well be attributed to the hard work he put in last winter as well, not only on his technique but his fitness too. Having spent previous seasons trying to establish himself in the Sunfoil Dolphins mix, 2015/16 saw the 26-year-old secure a regular berth in the match day eleven with consistently strong performances. “I started to play more consistently last season but this was the first season where I played almost every match, missing only a couple due to rain and one because of my involvement in the South Africa ‘A’ squad. So consistent have Maharaj’s efforts been for both the Dolphins and South Africa ‘A’, that some have even

suggested a full national call up is now not far away, despite the emerging spinner keen to remain focused on the current task at hand. “It is every youngster’s dream to play for the Proteas!” admitted Maharaj. “There has been a little bit of talk here and there by some on social media, but I try not get caught up in that. “I’m just trying to focus on contributing consistently at domestic level in order to help the Dolphins win games and hopefully trophies too,” he added. What was largely a festive atmosphere on the day quickly turned to tragedy, however, when Gabriella Burnett, a 33-year-old runner from Westville in the 10km race died about 300 metres from the finish-line. In light of the tragic death, club chairman, Lajeeth Maharaj expressed his deepest condolences and sympathies on behalf of the club to the bereaved family. The club has also made an appeal to all runners to “please ensure they are physically fit to take part in these races before taking them on.” Maharaj also extended his thanks to sponsors of the race for making the day possible. “Thanks to Arysta Life Science (ALS) for partnering with the Panthers in this ‘TPAC-ALS Classic’. Thanks to all sponsors, volunteers and wellwishers for your commitment and dedication in ensuring the success of this annual event,” he said.
