A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. Driver shot dead in Verulam ANDILE SITHOLE

A

THIRTY-YEAR-OLD driver was shot dead by the police on Indwedwe Road outside Verulam after he failed to stop at a road block in Tongaat on 17 December. The deceased was identified as Sphiwe Khumalo. Police spokesperson in Verulam Captain Mark Prakasim said police were conducting a road block on the Tongaat’s Watson Highway at about 1.30am on Saturday morning when they tried to stop the driver of a bakkie who was driving recklessly. Prakasim said the driver refused to stop despite numerous attempts made by the police. The driver knocked a police van belonging to Tongaat SAPS before he fled the scene towards Verulam. “The police gave chase towards Verulam.

When the suspect was on Indwedwe Road outside Verulam the police tried again to stop him. He was driving recklessly and he knocked the police van again. The police fired a shot at the tyres on his car in attempt to stop him. Unfortunately,

the bullet accidentally hit him on his neck and he died at the scene. “A case of murder is being investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate. There was a case of attempted murder that

HREE people were seriously injured after an explosive device was accidentally set off in Oakford, Verulam on 14 December. Two children, aged five and six years old, were severely injured due to the explosion that occurred near their home. The father of the two children Sabelo Nxumalo is now demanding that the demolition company take action and compensate his family for the injuries. The 30-year-old distraught father said his children were playing outside in their yard when the explosive device, which is usually used to break rocks, exploded and struck the children. Nxumalo said the demolition company was removing rocks to construct a new road in Oakford and accidentally left one explosive device at the construction site. “I am prepared to take further steps against the company. Last week an employee from the demolition company was working on site removing all the refuse and debris. My children were outside playing. We then heard a loud bang and we went out to investi-

Nxumalo accused the company of being negligent and not adhering to the safety rules and regulations. He said the device was buried outside his home and the construction worker who was on duty at the time

burnt the debris ,therefore it exploded causing huge stones hit the two girls. One child has been discharged from hospital, but the other and the construction worker are still receiving medical attention due to the severity of their injuries. “We were not even consulted and told that the company will be breaking stones using dangerous explosives. Oakford is a residential area, the company should have informed us in advance. My daughter is undergoing sensitive surgery and part of her intestines had to be removed. She is fighting for her life in hospital.” Another resident Siyabonga Zungu, 40, said: “We signed a petition when the project started threes ago opposing the road construction because the company was using explosives. “We sent letters to the management of the company requesting a meeting with them. We were concerned about our children’s safety. The company shrugged it off and ignored us. Ward 59 councillor Linda Majola

said: “A construction worker was burning the refuse at the site when the fire accidentally spread to the area where the explosive device was buried. Some of the houses were affected and windows were damaged. I then instructed the company to repair the windows that were damaged. This was negligent on the side of the company.” Police spokesperson in Verulam Captain Mark Prakasim confirmed the incident. “Police are investigating a case of negligent discharging of an explosive device. A man and two children were rushed to hospital in a critical condition.” The Weekly contacted the company for comment. A woman from the company requested that queries be emailed to her and she said lawyers representing the company are working on the matter. Thereafter further attempts were made to get comment from the company representative, but no comment was made at time of going to press.

Community urged to clear criminal records ANDILE SITHOLE THE Tongaat Central Library in partnership with Freedoms South Africa hosted the clearance criminal records campaign at the library recently. The intention was to equip people who have bad criminal records with knowledge on how to clear their names. Members of Freedoms South Africa are spearheading the programme. The founder of the organisation Wayne JeanPierre said having a bad criminal record motivated him to start the organisation in 2013 that dealt specifically with matters pertaining to people who have bad criminal records. “I first made an application to have my name cleared as I had a criminal record that was attached on my name since the days of apartheid. When I succeeded in clearing my name, I realised that it was crucial to start an organisation that will represent people with bad criminal records. “Our flagship programme deals with prevention, giving hope to people, families and communities. It is about restoring the dignity of people who have come in conflict with the law by creating an opportunity for them to be-

The programme hopes to create safer communities where ex-offenders can positively contribute to community development. We educate the youth on the consequences of coming in conflict with the law.” The interested individuals willing to apply must first fill the application for a police clearance certificate from a nearest police station. “We run one-on-one consultations with people who have criminal records. We are then able to ascertain when a person qualifies to have the previous criminal records cleared. These ses-

sions assist ex-offenders to better understand the options available and give them hope. “The applicant will need R96 and an identity document to make an application at any nearest police station. The police clearance certificate has all the records registered against you in South Africa. The waiting period for a police clearance certificate is normally six to eight weeks. Since May 2009 the amendment to section 271 of the Criminal Procedures Act (65 of 2008) created the mechanism for the expungement of certain minor criminal records.” Pierre said since the inception of the programme they have assisted people with minor offences ranging from common assault, theft, possession of drugs, drunk and driving and contempt of court. “Some applications that stand out for me include assisting a 90-year-old man who asked to be cleared as to allow his children and grandchildren to bury him as a free person and not a criminal. Second was the application of a grandfather with a record for stealing a piece of cheese. Our programme is not funded and we would to be able to reach and service more people with assistance from business, communities and faith-based groups.”

Local man on a fundraising drive

2016 Buffelsdale ex 22 December coastal pupils give back WEEKLY

VERULAM resident Roy Govender jetted off to India on 14 December where he will climb one of the highest mountains on earth, Mount Everest. Govender’s purpose is to embark on this journey is to raise funds for the Verulam Regional Hospice. Govender, who is the owner of a local grading and soil removal company, left the country after a goodwill send off function held at the hospice on 12 December. The hospice said in a statement: “The board of management wished him a safe and smooth climb on his very challenging feat. [Govender] together with other 10 climbers were expected to commence the climb on Mount Everest on 16 December.” Chairperson of the Verulam Regional hospice Professor Chandru Kistan appealed to the members of the public to support the fund raising drive by pledging a sum of money at this festival time of the year. For further details, contact the hospice on 032 5332764 or email vlmhospice@telkomsa.net - Supplied. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

The organising committee hands over a cheque to teachers (from left) Shar lane Kandasamy, Mrs SK Padayachee, Mrs KD Moodley, Kubendren Naicker, Nishaan Suredin, Michael Naidoo, Jessendren Pillay and Revashni Moodley. THE Buffelsdale Secondary class of 1996 held their 20 year reunion on 17 December at the Latitude Convention Centre. The function was arranged by Nishaan Suredin together with other ex-pupils including Michael Naidoo, Jessendren Pillay, Kubendren Naicker, Revashini Moodley and Sharlane Kandasamy. The reunion was a success with teacher Mrs SK Padayachee and former teacher Mrs KD Moodley also in attendance. The former pupils of Buffelsdale

Secondary raised a significant amount of cash as well during the planning process and presented the amount raised - R10 000 - to Buffelsdale Secondary for the school to use for upgrades and improvements. Mrs SK Padayachee was grateful to receive these funds on behalf of the school and made an earnest appeal to former pupils and even members of the public to continue to assist the school in whichever way possible to maintain it to a standard conducive for on-going learning. - Supplied.

Don’t let these 5 things spoil your holiday >> Tips to keep you healthy during the festivities

H

OLIDAYS should be about relaxing and having a good time with friends and family. But things don’t always work out that way. Here’s how to be prepared: If you stock your medicine chest, things such as holiday stress, a stomach upset, gout, or a cold just won’t get to spoil your well-deserved holiday. Here’s more about a few products you can use to help you have a good break right to the end: Stress Travel as such can be very stressful, especially if it involves flights, busy roads, delays and long journeys. Also just getting to the point of departure is often stressful in itself, especially if you have kids in tow. Even if you stay at home, you might have houseguests, which can be tricky in itself, as you find yourself cooking,

cleaning and entertaining. If you need a bit of help to stay calm under fire, remember Relicalm - calm convenience. It will help you concentrate and keep you calm when you need it most. Relicalm is not habitforming, and won’t make you feel sleepy – and its effects can be felt within half an hour and can last for up to five hours. Digestive problems You’re in a strange place, and you’re eating food you might not be used to. Add the possible stress of travelling or an illness to that and it’s no wonder the intestinal flora in your gut could do with a bit of help. The probiotic Entiro (TM) can be used when taking antibiotics, or as a daily probiotic supplement. Probiotics have been shown to be beneficial in a wide range of conditions such as irritable bowel syn-

Rosha Jairam OPTOMETRIST OPTION 1

drome and travellers’ diarrhoea. Colds and flu Few things can spoil a holiday quite as much as a nasty cold or a bout of flu. Everyone else is having fun, and you’re hiding in your room with a runny nose and a nasty cough. Luckily there is something you can do to help prevent this: Airmune Effervescent Tablets can help to support your immune system with the necessary vitamins, minerals, herbal extracts and amino acids when it is fighting off a cold or flu. Gout This is a painful form of arthritis that can sometimes flare up when you have been eating certain foods. Watch your diet, and avoid foods with a high purine content (such as certain types of fish), and steer clear of alcohol. Also ask your doctor to recommend effective medication to combat or manage a gout attack. There are few things that put quite such a dampener on a holiday as this. A lack of energy Holidays are about relaxing, but also about getting out and about, and do-

ing the things you usually don’t have time for. The last thing you need is to miss out on everything, because you are feeling tired. Make sure you pack some of Cipla’s Ciplaton tablets, syrup, or effervescent tablets, which all contain the vitamins and minerals necessary to enhance your energy levels. If you have children, it might be an idea to pack some of the following things, especially if you are going to be far away from a pharmacy or a doctor: · Thermometers. You might need to test a child’s temperature. Try the

sticky-strip forehead thermometers or the digital ear thermometers. · Antiseptic solution. These can stop broken skin, stings and bites from becoming infected. · Plasters. Take a few different types – you don’t know what you will be needing. · Painkillers. Before you go, speak to the pharmacist or doctor about painkillers suitable for children. · Rehydration solution. These are invaluable to combat dehydration brought on by sickness or diarrhoea. - Health24 Don’t let a cold ruin your holiday this season. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

FREQUENT or constant headaches accompanied by neck pain often indicates some problems related to neck muscles. A poor or wrong body posture along with stress and tension have been found to manifest into severe headaches and neck pain. Wrong body posture can put strain on the back of the neck through which the occipital nerve passes. Constantly watching television or the computer screen for a long time can strain the eye muscles and cause pain in the eyes and head. Other causes of head and neck pain are stress, tension, poor lighting conditions, migraine and meningitis. Cluster headaches, physical injury or trauma can also neck and head pain. Frequent headaches accompanied by neck and jaw pain and stiffness are caused by a disorder called Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD). Pain medication can alleviate the condition temporarily, proper identification of the underlying cause is required to treat and prevent this condition. Acupuncture, cupping and therapeutic massage helps in increasing blood circulation thereby relaxing the muscles and relieving the tension of the neck and easing the head pain. Headaches that originate from the problems of the neck or neck muscles can be relieved with acupuncture and assists in reducing levels of stress and tension. Regular exercise maintaining correct body posture, management of stress and anxiety and relaxation techniques can also help in coping with head and neck pain. Don’t let pain dominate your life, consult the doctor of Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture. If you have not found the remedy for your health problems, don’t despair, maybe it’s time your tried acupuncture. Contact Dr Meena Kasim on 032 944 2761/ 082 786 4127 for an appointment at Shop 13B, Tongaat City, 293 Main Road, Tongaat (Nu Shop passage). Branches in Overport and Chatsworth as well. - Supplied.

Generally awful year

RANJENI MUNUSAMY

P

EOPLE do not agree on much but there appears to be some agreement that 2016 has generally been awful. With terror attacks, natural disasters, the Zika outbreak, the rise of the right wing in Europe, the Brexit vote, plane crashes, escalating conflict in Syria, a coup attempt in Turkey, world leaders toppling like skittles and the

election of Donald Trump as the United States’s president, among other things, the news cycle this year was wholly depressing. In South Africa, we had our own share of problems. The drought has been devastating, university fee protests were violent with no tangible settlement, revelations of corruption have exposed the rot infesting our government and our economy continues to perform badly. The inter-governmental wars and attempts to charge Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan showed a nefarious agenda at play in the state. This agenda continues to compromise vital institutions. And with each passing day, it becomes more apparent how the Gupta family used their proximity to President Jacob Zuma to control the state for their financial benefit. As a result, Atul Gupta has become the richest black person in SA, while black empowerment and the process of transforming the economy is moving backwards. It is infuriating and depressing

to know that the family enrich themselves by exploiting their political connections with no repercussions. This week, a parliamentary inquiry into the SABC has revealed how Hlaudi Motsoeneng made a mockery of the Broadcasting Act, the rules of governance and the editorial integrity of the public broadcaster. Journalists told the inquiry how they were instructed to project the president in a favourable light while footage of the opposition was banned or edited out of stories. The testimonies of the SABC board chairperson, Mbulaheni Maguvhe, and Communications Minister Faith Muthambi showed shocking levels of ineptitude and complete refusal to accept responsibility for the shambles in the organisation. All of this can leave one feeling despondent about the state of the country and the world. Last week, I interviewed the outgoing United States ambassador Patrick Gaspard, who has completed his three-year term in South Africa. I remarked that this has not been the best

time to showcase our country with a series of scandals and so much political commotion. But Gaspard said he is impressed by what he has witnessed in our country. He said it is a sign of political maturity that the Constitutional Court ruling on Nkandla, which found that the president had violated the Constitution in his handling of the public protector’s report, was accepted and respected by the ANC, the presidency and civil society. “Democracy was put to the test and South Africa came out proving it is the most resilient place on the planet,” he said. Gaspard said he is also inspired by the “rebirth of civil-society activism”. That made me realise that while a lot has gone wrong in our country, there is also much to be grateful for. After a messy, highly charged election campaign, the local-government poll proceeded peacefully. The political sands shifted and South Africa handled the change maturely. We managed to evade a ratings

downgrade that would have relegated South Africa to junk status. The courts continue to serve as a safeguard against the abuse of power. Our athletes did us proud at the Rio Olympics. People in the ANC, including struggle veterans, are finally speaking out against Zuma’s leadership failures and his improper relationship with the Guptas. There was a fight back from civil society on issues such as the abuse of state institutions, the attempts to charge Gordhan and the manipulation of the SABC. Motsoeneng has finally been unseated from his ivory tower at the public broadcaster and the SABC inquiry is demonstrating how Parliament should function. Yes, 2016 was harrowing but it is time to dust ourselves off and perhaps, in a non-Trump way, make South Africa great again. • Ranjeni Munusamy is a political journal ist and commentator for the Daily Maver ick. ranjeni.munusamy@gmail.com

weeklywheels Uber launches selfdriving pilot in San Francisco with Volvo Cars U

BER, the ride-sharing technology company, is expanding its self-driving pilot to San Francisco, California, using specially-converted self-driving Volvo XC90 premium SUVs. The move marks the next phase in a deepening alliance between Volvo and Uber after the two companies signed an agreement in August 2016 to establish a jointly-owned project to build base vehicles that can be used to develop fully autonomous driverless cars. These cars were initially tested in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The latest cars to be used in San Francisco have been built by Volvo and sold to Uber, after which Uber’s own self-driving hardware and software package has been added, most visibly in the roof-mounted control apparatus. These cars will drive around the streets of San Francisco autonomously, but as part of the pilot programme they will at all times have an Uber technician on board to supervise the car’s operation. “The promise of self-driving ride sharing is becoming a reality,” says Mårten Levenstam, vice president product planning at Volvo Cars. “Volvo is proud to be at the forefront of the latest developments in the automotive world alongside our partners at Uber.” The alliance with Uber forms one

part of Volvo’s three-part plan to develop autonomous driving (AD) technologies. In January 2017 it will begin a project entitled Drive Me, which will be the world’s largest autonomous driving test in which up to 100 AD cars will be given to members of the public to be driven on real roads around Gothenburg, Sweden. Their experiences will be used to co-develop Volvo’s AD cars. The second part is a joint venture with Autoliv, the leading automotive

safety technology company, to set up Sweden, and an initial workforce taka new jointly-owned company to de- en from both companies of around sign and manufacturer separately- 200, increasing to over 600 in the mebranded AD and driver assistance dium term. The company is expected software technology packages for sale to third party OEMs. “YOUR TYRE KINGDOM” The new company will have its headquarters in Gothenburg,

to start operations in the beginning of 2017. The third part is the ongoing relationship with Uber to build and co-develop base vehicles for AD cars. This deal reduces Volvo’s developments costs, gives it a chance to develop cutting edge technology and could ultimately boost sales significantly. The base vehicles are manufactured by Volvo and then purchased from Volvo by Uber. Volvo Cars and Uber are contributing a combined USD 300m to the project. Both Uber and Volvo will use the same base vehicle for the next stage of their own autonomous car strategies. The cars to be used in San Francisco are developed on Volvo Cars’ fully modular Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). SPA is one of the most advanced car architectures in the world and is currently used for Volvo Cars’ top-of-the-line, multiple award-winning XC90 SUV, as well as the S90 premium sedan and V90 premium estate. SPA has been developed as part of Volvo Cars’ USD 11bn global industrial transformation programme, which started in 2010, and has been prepared from the outset for the latest autonomous drive technologies as well as next generation electrification and connectivity developments. It is these capabilities that attracted Uber to Volvo. - Supplied.

Ford GT deliveries begin THE first road-going version of the all-new 2017 Ford GT has rolled off the line – heralding the beginning of production of the long-awaited halo car from Ford Performance. In this new, low-volume assembly facility at Multimatic in Markham, Ontario, Raj Nair, Ford executive vice president, global product development, and chief technical officer, marked the milestone by driving a Ford GT off the assembly line. “When we kicked off 2016, we had two primary objectives for our Ford GT supercar – to excel at Le Mans, and to start deliveries before year-end,” says Nair. “We’ve achieved both.”

“For everyone involved in designing and developing this car, including all of our employees and suppliers, this is a moment to celebrate,” he adds. “The all-new Ford GT is a showcase of our strength in innovation and our commitment to delivering more for our customers – especially related to lightweight materials, aerodynamics and EcoBoost® engine technologies.” Ford GT was unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in January 2015. Less than two years later, Ford Performance is now delivering the first cars to customers around the globe. For more information on Ford GT, please visit www.fordgt.com. - Supplied.

WEEKLY

weeklywheels The Lexus LC: Dynamic luxury coupe in every aspect >> Cuttingedge design and contemporary approach used in the new Lexus

T

HE introduction of the new LC luxury coupe is a new, significant illustration of Lexus’ dedication to create cars with exciting, emotional designs and exhilarating performance. In the space of just 27 years Lexus has had a transformative effect on the world’s luxury car market. Engineering excellence has produced generations of powerful, responsive engines and transmissions, while its pioneering hybrid technology has taken efficiency and smoothness to ever higher levels. Cutting-edge design and a contemporary approach to luxury based on master craftsmanship traditions further emphasise its authentic status as a world-class luxury vehicle manufacturer. Now Lexus is building on its established strengths, and evolving its reputation for a rational approach to vehicle development, to explore new opportunities in design and technology that reshape its model range. The change is being led from the top by Akio Toyoda, who in taking on the roles of Lexus’ Chief Branding Officer and master driver has given the business more freedom and autonomy and the confidence to be daring. With the benefit of dedicated resources, greater flexibility and quicker decision-making, Lexus has delivered a succession of vibrant new models that are changing the way it is perceived both by customers and the global automotive indus-try. The LC luxury coupe takes this evolution to another level. Lexus has succeeded in turning its LF-LC concept into an uncompromised production car - less than five years after its unveiling to huge critical and public acclaim. This feat has called for new ways of co-operation between the design and engineering teams throughout the development process. A flagship luxury coupe The LC is a new flagship 2+2 luxury coupe for Lexus’ global model range, not only showcasing the qualities of design, beauty, engineering and advanced technology that define it as a premium vehicle manufacturer, but also symbolising its ambition as a luxury lifes-

tyle brand. Dynamic luxury coupe design The LC’s exterior design is immediately recognisable as being a masterful reinterpretation of the styling of the LF-LC concept, winner of an Eyes-On Design award when first revealed at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. New global architecture luxury plat form The desire was to preserve the LFLC’s defining low roof and hood lines, while ensuring the packaging allowed the LC to match the concept in accommodating a sport suspension and 21inch forged alloy wheels. The teams had the benefit of working on a completely new GA-L (Global Architecture - Luxury) platform, designed for new generations of front engine/rear-wheel drive Lexus models. Powertrain excellence The LC 500 is powered by Lexus’ 5.0-litre normally aspirated V8 petrol engine, generating a maximum output of 351 kW, matched to a new close-ratio Direct Shift 10-speed automatic transmission - a first for a premium passenger car. - Supplied
