A number of reasons to celebrate

This week ONLINE

MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

Have a safe and blessed festive season

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime

continues to destroy some of our communities. However, the one thing that continues to stand undefeated is the spirit of the Upper Highway community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

own challenges this year, but as we enter 2015 we renew our pledge to you to do our very best to continue to be the most accurate, fair and balanced source of news, opinion, features, sports and entertainment in the Upper Highway Area. We will continue to be open and honest with our readers and we assure you that the new year will be one never to be forgotten. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year and those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We extend sincere and warm wishes to our Hillcrest Fever family for a safe and peaceful festive season, and a happy and prosperous 2015. Kalisha Naicker Senior Journalist Hillcrest Fever

Rape suspect appears in court >> Protestors demand he doesn’t get bail

APE survivors and family members of women raped in Waterloo between 2012 and 2016 broke down in tears at the Verulam Magistrate’s Court when a 45-year-old man, facing charges of rape, appeared on 16 September. The rape survivors who were among community members inside a packed court could not hold their tears as the accused, Bheki Magwaza, entered the dock. One woman, who was allegedly raped by the accused, became hysterical and had to be comforted by her family in the courtroom. Magwaza’s legal representative submitted a sworn statement in court asking the magistrate to grant the accused bail. He stated the accused is a breadwinner who supports children and family members. He told the court that the accused could only afford bail of R2 000.

Rape suspect appears in court However, the state opposed bail and said the accused was a threat to the community. Magwaza’s lawyer called in a witness, the brother of the accused, Sibusiso Mag waza, in a bid to save the accused from go ing to jail. “He [accused] and my grandmother, who is a pensioner, support us. He is the breadwinner at home and I therefore ask the court to grant him bail because he is a first offender. Should the court not grant him bail, a university student who relies on

his salary will drop out from school. “He pays all the educational expenses for a student studying at university of Jo hannesburg and other children at home. And we would be suffering financially should the court not grant him bail,” he said. However, the state prosecutor told the court that witness’s statement was contra dicting. “You are wearing a gold chain and ex pensive jersey, how can you say you would be impoverished if the court does not give

the accused bail?” When the court prosecutor crossexam ined the witness, Magwaza sat silently in the dock, folding a blue facecloth and wept. His legal representative told court that the accused has no pending previous convic tions and he would not interfere with state witnesses. Outside court members of the commu nity and ANC Women’s League staged a protest calling on the magistrate not to give the accused bail. Community leader and member of the ANC in Waterloo Nadia Phiri told the Week ly: “As the leader I mobilised women in the seven wards in Verulam and Tongaat to

stage a protest outside court and demand the suspect to be held accountable for his actions. “We are not pleased to a have a rapist walking free in our community,” she said. One of the protestors outside court said: “He must rot in jail people like him must be removed from the community. It is heart breaking to see women and children weep

Beware of bogus healers ANDILE SITHOLE

A

STERN warning is being sent out about smooth-talking bogus traditional healers conning the community in the Verulam CBD. SAPS spokesperson Captain Mark Prakasim told the Weekly that a woman was held at knife point and robbed by a fake traditional healer in the Verulam CBD last week. The victim Ntombifikile Mthabela (37) told Weekly: “I will never forget that day. I thought I was going to die. I received a call from him telling me to come to his consultation room in Verulam. It never crossed my mind that I was going to be robbed. When I arrived in Verulam he sent another man to take me to his consultation room. He then said he would introduce me to another healer. We walked out of the consultation room towards the bush and while I was puzzled, he drew a knife and demanded cash. My bank cards, cellphone and R250 in my wallet were taken,” she said. Mthabela said the suspect left her stranded in the bush. “I managed walked back to Verulam CBD and went to the police station to open a case,” she said. Prakasim urged members of the community to be wary of bogus traditional healers. “The public should refrain from visiting bogus traditional healers. In this case we suspect that the suspect sent one of his cronies to fetch her at Verulam CBD. When the police arrived at the suspect’s house he was not found. Police are investigating a case of robbery,” he said. In June another victim was conned out of his provident fund in Verulam by an alleged psychic. According to Reaction Unit SA the accused predicted that the victim’s life was in danger and convinced him to resign from work. It was alleged that the healer pressed on and made promises to the victim and persuaded him to disclose the value of his provident fund. He promised to convert R140 000 of his pension fund into R4 million. President of South African Traditional Healers Association Sazi Mhlongo also warned members of the public to refrain from visiting fake traditional healers. “It is shocking to hear such stories of people being conned by people claiming to be traditional healers. In most cases people who generally commit such barbaric acts are not even traditional healers. A traditional healer, who has graduated and passed all the vows of being a healer will never rob people. Those people claiming to be traditional healers must be dealt with accordingly,” he said.

ONGAAT residents are still reeling from shock after the death of Warrant Officer Pravesh Chunilall (49) after he suffered a heart attack on 18 September. Many colleagues said this is a major loss to the Tongaat police station and to the community. Chunillal was one of the dedicated members at Tongaat SAPS and worked in the police force for about 30 years. He investigated a number of serious cases in the north of Durban. Acting branch commander Detective Captain Fathima Perumaul said: “It is indeed a great loss to the community and the police station of Tongaat. He was a dedicated member who went

[After completion] he returned to the Tongaat police station where he became a full-time member. “In 2000 he was transferred to the detective branch at the station. In 2005 he attended a detective’s course which enabled him to join the detective unit. He investigated serious cases and managed to secure convictions. “He was a live wire among other members at the station and the morning parades will not be the same without him. He will be dearly missed by his colleagues. He possessed some rare credentials that gave our station a new look,” she said. His brother Nishan Chunilall (37) told the Weekly: “He will be dearly missed by the family and the void he left is going to be difficult to fill. He brought the family together and kept the fire burning at home. We are still reeling from the shock because my brother was not sick,” he said. He was cremated at the Tongaat Crematorium on 18 September. Chunilall leaves behind his mother and brother who is also a police officer at Tongaat SAPS.

Reaction Unit SA crime report Driver flees accident scene: Veru lam A car and bakkie collided on the R102 near the Canelands intersection in Veru lam on Saturday 10 September at ap proximately 4pm. Reaction Unit SA (Rusa) officers were dispatched to the scene and upon arrival they found a Toyota Corolla col lided into a Toyota Hilux bakkie. The oc cupants of both vehicles were not in jured in the collision. It is alleged that as the driver of the Corolla was travelling in the north bound lane of the R102 the driver lost control of the vehicle before crossing over the centre median and colliding in to the Toyota Hilux bakkie in the south bound lane. The driver of the Corolla abandoned his vehicle and fled the scene leaving his passenger behind. Suspects firearm malfunctions during robbery: Verulam One person was injured following an attempted business robbery and hijack ing on Cottonwood Drive in Trenance Park, Verulam on Wednesday 14 Sep tember. At approximately 4.45pm members of Rusa were dispatched to the scene after receiving several calls from the public reporting shots being fired in a sa lon. Upon arrival officers were informed that two suspects, one who was armed with a firearm, attempted to gain entry into the business. When they realised that the security gate was locked, one suspect pointed his firearm at a Pakstani national who was inside the salon and asked him for the keys to the gate. When the man de clined to hand over the keys the suspect fired a single shot at him however his firearm malfunctioned causing the slide to fall of. The bullet had struck a wooden

board narrowly missing the victim who was hiding behind it. The suspects then abandoned the robbery and in their attempt to flee they assaulted a 60yearold man with the butt of the firearm before hijacking him of his 140i Toyota Corolla with registra tion NJ 16124. The elderly man was treated on scene for his injuries and declined fur ther medical attention. Pedestrian injured: Verulam A 39yearold woman suffered moderate injuries after being knocked down by the driver of a Toyota Hiace on Moss Street in Verulam on 17 Septem ber. Members of Rusa were dispatched to the scene after receiving several calls from the public requesting medical as sistance for the injured pedestrian. Up on arrival the woman was treated for her injuries before being transported to hospital. The driver of the Toyota Hiace did not stop on scene however drove straight to the Verulam SAPS. Taxi crashes in construction site: Verulam At approximately 5.45am on Sun day 18 September members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to the Southridge intersection in Verulam after receiving reports of a taxi accident. Upon arrival a Toyota Hiace was found to have crashed through concrete barriers that were being used to block off a construction site. The taxi then landed in a ditch filled with water. The driver was trapped in the vehicle. Rusa Medics managed to free the man who was the only occu pant in the vehicle. He did not sustain any injuries and refused medical atten tion. It is alleged that while travelling from Verulam in the direction of South ridge the brakes on the taxi failed result ing in the accident. Supplied.

Robbery suspect dies in gun battle >> Reaction Unit officer also shot in Verulam ANDILE SITHOLE

A

ROBBER who shot and wounded a member of Reaction Unit SA (Rusa) on Monday during a gun battle in Verulam CBD with the officers was found dead in a nearby bush. The suspect with two accomplices entered a petrol station on Todd Street in Verulam and held staff at gunpoint demanding cash. The Rusa officers came under fire after they responded to the report of a robbery in progress in the Verulam CBD on Monday morning. Head of Rusa Prem Balram said that there was an exchange of fire between Rusa officers and the three suspects. One officer was shot and wounded and the two suspects were arrested shortly afterwards. However, the injured suspect fled on foot. Balram said that they received infor-

mation from Verulam police who stated that the girlfriend of the shot suspect reported him missing after he called her and informed her that he was wounded. “We were informed that the girlfriend told the police that her boyfriend did not come home on the day of the shooting. She told police her boyfriend said that he was shot by Rusa officers in Verulam. “He also told her that he was hiding in a bush. We then went to the bush near the garage where the robbery took place. The area was cordoned off and we then searched the dense bush. We found the body of the suspect lying near the river. He was dead,” said Balram. Spokesperson for Verulam SAPS Captain Mark Prakasim said, “The two suspects are linked to other cases of business robberies that occurred in Trenance Park and Dawncrest. They face charges of business robbery. The

suspects took an undisclosed amount of cash, airtime and cigarettes. “We would like to thank Rusa officers for their swift response in arresting the suspect,” he said. The two suspects are due to appear at the Verulam Magistrate’s court this week. In a separate incident, Tongaat police are investigating a case of business robbery after a group of gun-wielding men intruded into a clothing shop in the Tongaat CBD on 19 September and held the staff at gunpoint demanding cash. Warrant Officer Ricky Moodley from Tongaat SAPS said: “A group of armed men entered a store and demanded cash. They walked away with undisclosed amount of cash and cellphones. Police are investigating a case of business robbery and there are no arrests at this stage. The suspects are still at large,” he said.

Obtaining sound financial advice BY JUGGIE GOVENDER OF EAST COAST FINANCIAL SERVICES (PTY) LTD – FSP 44760 IN today’s fast-paced modern world, financial planning often falls to the bottom of the priority list as people try to juggle their work and life commitments. However, failing to plan effectively can have a significant impact on one’s overall financial health, both in the short and long-term. Many people may not be fully equipped to manage their personal finances effectively. This is where the value of advice comes in and having the right financial advice can make the world of difference to ensure individuals can maintain or improve their standard of living. Some financial advisers do not develop financial objectives that are aligned with the overall needs of their client, as the primary objective is to facilitate the sale of products. The newgeneration lifestyle financial planners are not product salesmen, they will listen to the client first and thereafter ask lifestyle related questions to ascertain

their financial health before making recommendations that are both relevant and understandable to the client. The lifestyle financial planner will allow the client to speak their mind. The adviser will listen to the client’s concerns, goals and dreams to determine what their lifestyle requirements are and compare these against their current financial situation. The intention is that the client will not be persuaded to buy products that will result in the most commission for the adviser; but that the client gets the solutions that they actually need. Insurance and investment policies generally contain technical language and jargon that most people do not understand. A good financial adviser will therefore fully explain how the investment or insurance product assists the client to achieve their specific life goal. The benefit, cost and purpose of the solution should be clearly disclosed upfront. A good test of a financial adviser is whether they can explain their value proposition as well as how their proposal will benefit the client in layman’s terms, as opposed to trying to justify

costs by elaborating on technical product features and benefits. As famous psychologist Edward de Bono once noted; “An expert is someone who has succeeded in making decisions and judgements simpler through knowing what to pay attention to and what to ignore.” He encourages people to seek out lifestyle financial planners who can guide them through their different life stages and protect them from making poor decisions. A good planner will coach their client to do the things they do not necessarily want to do, in order to live the life they want to live. He states that people should not wait until they are contacted by a financial adviser before they start working on their financial plan, but rather collaborate with a planner who understands their personal needs in order to achieve financial independence. As mentioned in previous articles, one should review and reassess their financial plan annually or earlier should the need arise. Parts of this article, is an excerpt by Nico Coetzee, an executive of PPS dat-

JUST who can replace the awesome Thuli Madonsela as public protector? Obviously somebody with great integrity, determination, resilience, strength and legal knowledge and experience. As the ruling party ANC is likely to feel hugely disenfranchised after the August polls, we can only plead with Chuck Norris to be our public protector, as law and order are trademarks of his left and right legs, and intimidating him is impossible. Please, Chuck, South Africa needs you. You have made the U.S. safe, and this is a job only you can Nkandla the stress of. ROBERT NICOLAI

Not much to watch on DStv

DEAR MultiChoice, I think it’s perhaps time to take the “choice” out of your logo. I’m not really sure what I’m paying R800 a month for, and it’s going up rapidly, or why really. Unfortunately, your clever marketing strategy of not putting all the sport channels into a bouquet is, in my case, working. If I didn’t enjoy sport I would most definitely cancel my subscription forthwith. As a subscriber with an IQ of somewhere over 80, I actually enjoy good dramas, and not just the gratuitous violence in America. Nor do I enjoy endless repeats of Pawn Star, obese people, Dawg someone, Swamp fellahs, the Kardashians, Cheaters (need I go on). I was extremely happily surprised when channels 102, 123 and 119 actually had something worth watching. It felt like Christmas, with

a bonus on top. Now, for some months, these have followed your money-saving trend of rotating the repeats. I feel like a hamster on a wheel. Each month I go through your book hopefully (noting that the channels I like most aren’t in there), marking anything that is worth watching. Well, as you can imagine, my book is bare. Perhaps as a little thank you, you could bring a few British or Australian dramas back. If that’s too expensive, maybe a new Bondi Vet series, or even Village Vets would do . ALANNAH VALENTINE

Sanitary towels should be accessible INSTEAD of promoting the new and free flavoured condoms, the government should rather heed the call by the students of the University of the Witwatersrand, who are demanding that the government do away with the “tampon tax”, which is the major cause of hygiene products becoming increasingly unaffordable for women. In addition, the campaign is also calling on the management of Wits to provide free sanitary

towels to women. While the prevention of HIV/Aids is important, promoting the new condoms is disingenuous. Sanitary products and menstrual hygiene are basic human necessities and rights, and not luxuries. If condoms can be freely available to all, then there is no reason why essential items like sanitary pads cannot be freely available from public hospitals and clinics. According to reports, an estimated seven million girls miss school for some days every month because of a lack of access to hygiene products to take care of themselves during that time of the month. Girls in learning institutions should not be deprived of education because of a problem that is easily resolvable. Helping girls to manage menstruation can improve school and university attendance. I support the call for sanitary towels to be made accessible to the less privileged females in our country. MOHAMED SAEED

Equally accomplished is SA comedy legend, Mark Banks, winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards last year. This is the man who has had South Africa “ripped” with his tell-it-like-it-is, in-your-face brand of comedy, offering a unique, often sarcastic-laden, perspective on current affairs and issues that really cause us bother. Also participating in the Carnival of Funny is Durban’s own Neville Pillay - a firm favourite in KZN, this hilarious Stand-Up Comedian, accomplished writer and actor (‘Attack of the Indian Werewolf’, ‘31 Million Reasons’ , ‘Curry And Vice’), and award-winning Morning Radio Show Host is practically a household name! Comedy goers can also look forward to the mirth-laden antics of Kelvin Stoffels, Arnotte Payne, Khanyisa Bhunu (JHB), Masood Boomgaard, Gino Fernandez (CPT), Devin Gray (CPT), Jem Atkins and Neil Green, who will all feature over the weekend. The Ballito Comedy Carnival is a celebration of all things funny and is not to be missed. Tickets are R120 and are available from Computicket and Checkers.

The society in partnership with Pick n Pay and Verulam Athletic Club will be hosting the event, the aim of which is to raise funds to be used in assisting the

Unique talents sought ANDILE SITHOLE A LOCAL Tongaat organisation is searching for volunteers with unique talents. The Dimple Jerkin Worldwide Production, led by a Tongaat resident Dimple Jerkin (26), is determined to change the lives of her community by address-

ing social issues through entertainment. She said the aim is to give local actors an opportunity to showcase their skills and spread positive messages. “I started the organisation in October and I am the only founding member working with volunteers. We are looking for scriptwriters, players, dancers,

sibility and positioning the fun run as a major event in Verulam’s calendar. The society said in a statement: “In order to make this event an overwhelming success we appeal to participants to come in their numbers to Verulam Sports Ground to grace the fun run. Participants can obtain their entry tickets at the Pick n Pay Family Store in Verulam and at selected schools. We want to thank the schools that have accepted fun run tickets. “Every participant will help the society operationalise our motto that says, ‘Your care strengthens our care in child and family care’. “Remember your very action of obtaining a fun run ticket and participating is indicative of the care you have for the poor and downtrodden because every cent raised in this fun run will make a difference to the lives of the less fortunate in our community.” - Supplied.

choreographers, drawing, sketch artists, designers, models, actors and actresses, story writers, role models, videographers, volunteers, motivational speakers, poets and those with other talents. Rehearsals are at the Tongaat central library every Saturday at 1pm. Admission is free to these outreach productions,” she said. Jerkin can be contacted on 081 358 0054 or 084 049 4538.

Family day to commemorate Purtassi IN the runup to the grand finale of the Cen tenary celebrations of the Shree Veeraboga Emperumal Temple which takes place on 16 October (the last weekend of Purutassi), the organisation has entered into an exciting partnership with Fry’s family to bring to the community of Tongaat the first Purutassi Fry’s Family Day.

The event will bring an interesting and ex citing dimension to the month long fast that will observed by the South Indian Hindu com munity. Event organiser and planner said that this novel idea will not only help to create interest about the importance and significance around fasting but also add a great level of

fun towards it. The programme commenced on Satur day 17 September at the temple. Activities included aerobics workout, face painting, jumping castles, novelty fun and games, live band, Fry’s cooking demo and free vegetarian lunch treats for all. Budding chefs also participated in a spe cial cook off competi tion for delicious home made vegetarian Fry’s dishes. Winners will walk away with special ham pers and vouchers. The temple is ob serving Purutassi until 17 October with the book reading taking place on 15 October at 2pm. The community is in vited to a special 108 Kalsa Sudarshana Haw aan and Dhanvantri pooja on the historic centenary Purutassi Cel ebrations. This will commence at 10.30am am in the temple. The event which celebrates the 100th an niversary of SVET and 25th anniversary of Fry’s is going to be something that the whole family will enjoy. Supplied.

HILE many Tongaat residents decided to stay indoors during the wet weekend when the temperatures dipped once again, there was no stopping the Tongaat Panthers Athletics Club members. The 15 committed and determined members braved the icy cold weather and took part in the 18th leg of the Thinnys League Challenge. With just seven more legs to go for 2016, members are determined to go out and fulfill the league requirements. The Thinnys League Challenge has brought together members regularly and also encouraged and developed members who have improved their times and increased their distances. The 19th leg of the Thinnys League Challenge takes place on 25 September at 5.30am. The club, while promoting and developing sport amongst the youth, firmly believe that

youth must have a balanced life. To encourage them to have the same enthusiasm towards going to school as they have towards the Youth league, the pupils each received a school bag last week. The children were thrilled upon receiving this and expressed their excitement and gratitude. The club chairman Mr L.B. Maharaj and the executive convey their sincerest thanks to Mr Jash Maharaj, a well wisher and supporter of Panthers for securing this sponsorship. He believes that education and sport must be of equal importance in children’s lives to ensure that they receive holistic education. The youth development programme takes place on Tuesday and Thursday in Belvedere and Seatides respectively. All youth are welcome. - Supplied.

Calypso is unbeaten CALYPSO sporting FC took on Wild Katz FC in the last match of the first round of the indoor football league on Friday night. Going into this match Calypso Sport ing FC wanted to finish the first round on top and to also remain unbeaten. Ca lypso started the match by going for the opening goal, but the opposition did well in the first few minutes to sit back and absorb the pressure and try to coun ter attack. The opposition’s goalkeeper did ex tremely well in the opening minutes to make a number of saves that kept Ca lypso at bay, but this did not last long. With the continued pressure and on slaught, the opening goal was inevita ble. The first goal came midway in the first half through some good passing and gave Calypso the momentum of go

In the second half Calypso took off from where they left in the first half and continued with the attack and in search of more goals and they did this by keep ing possession and not losing the ball. The goals started to flow midway in the second half and thereafter scored regu larly till the end to win the match 91. The team will want to continue the second round on a winning run when they take on Maidstone FC on Friday 23 September at 8pm and are preparing for a tough encounter. The coaches are also geared for this and training will intensify to ensure that basics are done and is applied and to al so motivate the players for the next stage of the league.
