A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

URBAN businessman and convicted fraudster Visham Panday will launch his biography next month. “I now want to live as an ordinary person,” he said. Panday says his “tell-all” book will “shock” readers as he delves into his luxurious life in prison, his time as a general for the infamous Westville Prison 26 gang and his life-changing spiritual journey to the Himalayan mountains. The self-published book titled Visham Panday is his way of sharing his life lessons with others, Panday said. Panday was a part of the team of young computer hackers who robbed a leading bank of R1 billion, which allowed him to retire before he turned 21. Now 37, Panday said he has learnt his lessons and today focuses on building a better life for those less fortunate. Speaking to Weekend Witness (Weekly’s sister publication) recently, Panday said his book will reveal his 18-year spree which saw him rise

from the humble suburb of Northdale in Pietermaritzburg to be among the highest of high-rollers who splashed out millions of rands. “I have atoned for my sins. It’s enough. Now I want to live a full life and be an ordinary person. I have driven the best cars in the world, dined with some of the most glamorous women and rocked with the superstars. “But it did not bring me peace and happiness.

For close on two decades, the good life lost its shine. I wanted something much more,” Panday said. Panday is the brother of controversial businessman Thoshan Panday. After serving nine months of an effective three-year prison sentence for fraud, Panday was released early from prison with the remainder of his sentence converted to correctional su-

He added that he intends to also do readings in some schools in South Africa. “I want to show children that making money the wrong way will always come back to bite you. Durban flooded

WEEKLY REPORTER

L

ARGE parts of the province and city were affected by the heavy rain and cold front which hit Durban and surrounding areas in the last few days. So far reports reveal that four people have died due to flooding in many parts. Locally no fatalities have been reported but many residents complained of damaged properties. At the weekend a woman and her two children escaped uninjured when their vehicle was swept off the bridge due to high water levels of the Tongaat River.

>> A woman’s vehicle was swept off a bridge near the Tongaat River According to IPSS Rescue’s Paul Herbst the driver, who regularly uses the crossing, underestimated the current. “She managed to get out the vehicle and carry her children to safety. “IPSS Medical Rescue and Tongaat Fire were called out to assist with the incident,” said Herbst. Fatalities in KZN include a

pensioner in the Ugu district, two people who were electrocuted in Durban, and a Chatsworth woman, whose car was washed away, Cogta MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube said. Dube-Ncube said it was too early to estimate the damage caused. She said municipalities would not resort to using Section 36 of supply chain management regulations,

which allows contracts to be awarded without going out to tender. Repairs and any form of help would be procured through Cogta, disaster management centres, and the Disaster Management Act. Heavy rain began to fall over KwaZulu-Natal from Sunday, mostly affecting Durban. Police and emergency services at-

tended to a slew of incidents overnight, including accidents, landslides, and severe flooding in the city’s informal settlements. North Coast residents who have been affected by water restrictions have been praying for rain for months. Reports indicate the Hazelmere Dam level was at 42.73% on Monday. This is a small decrease from 43.07% measured on Tuesday, 19 July. It is believed that the rains experienced over the past few days have yet to reach the dam. Water restrictions in some areas will continue until the dam is at least 60% full. - Additional information from News24 and The Witness. For emergencies and flooding in Durban, residents must call the Disaster Management Centre on 031 361 0000.

WhatsApp alleged rape suspect arrested >> Police chief welcomes arrest

T

HE Tongaat police and the K9 Unit members arrested a 30-year-old man at the weekend for rape, robbery and kidnapping in the Fairbreeze area, Tongaat with the help of the brave victim. The suspect used WhatsApp to lure women by promising them jobs. He then raped and robbed them. According to police spokesman Captain Nqobile Gwala the suspect promised two women jobs and took them into a secluded area at the sugarcane fields where he tied up one and terrorised the other. “The victim managed to escape and alerted the police. On arrival police found that the suspect had escaped. “He continued with his evil deeds unaware that he was under the watchful eye of the police,” said Gwala.

He was caught in the act while luring another victim with the same modus operandi. “The suspect would rape victims and rob them of their belongings, including cellphones He used the phones to lure female contacts of the victims.” The man was taken to Tongaat police station for detention and will be charged for rape, robbery and kidnapping. He will appear in court soon. KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner Major General Bhekinkosi Langa commended police on their alertness and determination into apprehending the suspect. “We urge other women who were victims of a similar scenario to come forward and report the incident. We also advise women to refrain from believing all job promises from strangers,” he said. - Supplied

WEEKLY

>> Residents urged to be safe as the province get ready for elections SABELO NSELE

E

LECTION observers have identified many potential “hot spots” where violence may break out during the August election. With less than two weeks before the local government elections, there is concern over voter safety in the light of the politically motivated killings that continue to mar the run-up to the elections. The Local Government Observer Mission, which was formed by the KZN Christian Council and other civil society groups, has identified more than 19 hot spots in the province. These are areas that have recently experienced political killings, intra-

Concern over voter safety in KZN party conflict, intimidation, community protests and service delivery protests. They include Imbali and Sobantu in Pietermaritzburg, hostels in Durban’s KwaMashu and Glebelands, Newcastle, Kokstad and others. Observers warn that violent acts may erupt even after the local government elections. Since the beginning of the year, there have been 12 deaths in the province that have been believed to be politically motivated. KZN Christian Council director Dr Douglas Dziva described the situation as worrying. “We are very worried. Political killings contri-bute to fear among the vot-

ers. Individual councillors and mayors have complained to us about the death threats. “It looks like it is intra-party conflict with certain parties,” he said. A dossier compiled by the observ-

ers calls for “serious attention in terms of security deployment” for Sobantu. “The ANC [in Sobantu] is divided and two faction groups have emerged. Through dissatisfaction one member has come up and registered as an inde-

There is tension in the area,” reads the dossier. It also warns that free elections could be an “unattainable” dream for Glebelands hostel residents. “There is an ongoing war among the residents. More than 30 people have been murdered. Early this year an ANC councillor was killed in the same hostel.” The dossier further warns of rising tensions within the ANC in Durban townships. “There are very serious tensions within the ANC since there was a regional conference where the current mayor [James Nxumalo] was defeated. There is an ongoing bitterness between the members of the ANC,” the dossier noted. Dziva said 30 violence monitors, a group of master observers tasked to mediate in conflict situations, had been trained. “They will now train 500 election observers to be deployed across the province on August 3,” he said.

Youth come together THE Vedanta Institute of SA hosted a successful youth workshop recently and they thanked all sponsors who contributed towards it. The workshop was followed by the

distribution of the first batch of 162 jerseys for eight schools on Mandela Day. The Swamiji and members of the Vedanta Institute S.A. and the Vedanta Ashram Education Trust are grateful for the generous support of the all the donors who have made sacrifices on their budget to accommodate this much-needed service to the children and youth. Health MEC rallies against TB A

NATIONAL coalition against tuberculosis was launched in Durban last week. This alliance is a partnership between government, led by the National Department of Health, which has partnered with the National Religious Association for Social Development (NASRAD), the South African National TB Association (Santa) and the South Africa Red Cross. According to the National Minister of Health Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, TB has overtaken Aids as the biggest killer of all infectious diseases, which today, is responsible for more deaths than HIV and Aids, worldwide. The launch was held at eThekwini Community Church in Durban, led by Motsoaledi, the KZN Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo and health professionals, including members of parliament from African states. They signed a pledge to be part of the global TB Caucus. Sounding a warning about the dangers of this silent killer, Motsoaledi said: “I dare all of you to request nurses to screen you for TB when you visit our clinics. Whether you are there for immunisation of your child or treatment for other ailments, ask to be screened so you will know whether you need to be put on treatment for TB. He said government is going to scale up TB screening in all Metros. The minister said TB was one of the biggest killers of people with Aids. “Statistics reveal that nine million people have TB worldwide, but only six million are on treatment. In South Africa the people who are the most

affected by TB are inmates, those living in informal settlements and children, especially those under the age of five.” Motsoaledi called upon churches, mosques, synagogues and other places of worship to help save lives. “Today, we again summon the nation, communities, religious groups, men, women and the youth to participate in this ground-breaking TB testing campaign. “As we do so we must remind each other that to have tuberculosis is not a shame. We must allay the fears of those who contract the disease that they will be shunned, excluded and made to suffer in silence away. We must stand firm against prejudice, stigma and exclusion.” - Supplied.

Likhon iThemba spokesperson Kim Brown said: “We are passionate about improving the lives of vulnerable children in South Africa and giving them a head-start. “We are dedicated to providing a safe and loving family environment for those who have no one. We look after the babies until suitable adoptive families are found or until they are reunited with their biological family if the circumstances are right. collectors of the colorful and graceful sari. Durban is the only city in the world that has run an event of this nature annually in order to showcase the grace and glamour of the timeless sari. The event is popular among women of all cultures as one does not have to own a sari to attend the event. Ladies are welcome to select a free sari of their choice from our collection of saris, which are made available at our sari tent at the Suncoast Amphitheatre, from where the stroll will start. Ladies will also be helped to drape their sari and enjoy a stroll against a backdrop of the Indian Ocean. The event culminates at the Amphitheatre where another two marquees are set up to provide high tea and treats as well as entertainment for the fun filled afternoon. This includes songs and dance from different ethnic backgrounds and informative talks by inspirational leaders of the community. There will also be goodie bags for all participants and prizes to be won. Call Selvie Naicker on 083 778 8989 for more information. - Supplied.

True leadership he was wrong not to implement the public protector’s report on Nkandla. He now has to pay back the money for undue benefits. We do not expect much when it comes to people facing up to their failures. It was therefore a shocking and moving experience to watch a media briefing by the Trek4Mandela team on their return from Mount Kilimanjaro after the tragic death of racing car driver Gugu Zulu. Zulu died after experiencing difficulty breathing while he and his wife Letshego were attempting to summit the mountain as part of a charity drive for the Nelson Mandela Foundation. The news of the death of the sports personality stunned the nation and left those who knew him in deep grief. When the Nelson Mandela Foundation announced that there would be a media briefing on the team’s return from Tanzania, it was expected that there would be tributes and expressions of condolence. What ensued, however, was unprecedented. The expedition leader, mountaineer Sibusiso Vilane, began with an emotional apology to the nation for not bringing the whole team back home. “It was on Wednesday last week when I stood up and said to your fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters who had come to bid you farewell. that as the leader of the Trek4Mandela Caring4Girls Kilimanjaro expedition, my role is to make sure that I bring those you have come to say goodbye to back safely and alive. I am very disappointed to say I did not deliver on that promise,” Vilane said, breaking down in tears.

E often moan about the lack of accountability in our society and the chronic failure of our leaders to take responsibility for their actions. Passing the buck and employing delaying tactics, including costly court actions, appear to be the default reactions of people in leadership positions when they are caught out being involved in wrongdoing. One only has to look at the wild goose chase embarked on by the chief operating officer of the SABC, Hlaudi Motsoeneng, to stay in his job and continue stripping the public broadcaster of credibility. President Jacob Zuma had mastered the art of dodging accountability until he was dragged to the Constitutional Court and forced to admit that

“DO you make the tea? When I first went into an executive position I was convinced and I was determined I was not going to go into a board meeting and make the tea or take the minutes. “For ages I didn’t. I was very militant about it and the tea would arrive and I would studiously ignore it and wait for somebody else to make it. However, I would feel embarrassed about it because it just didn’t feel right. “I knew I was doing it to make a point, but I felt uncomfortable and so did the men in the room. So I made a decision that I would make the tea. “When I got to a board meeting or any sort of meeting where I was always the only woman - and sometimes with between 10 and 15 men in the room, I would ensure that I organised the tea and coffee before the meeting started. “What would happen is that the meeting would start

Vilane and the team doctor Roxanne Schutte gave a run down of what had happened, describing Zulu’s condition at various stages of the trek until they decided that he should be brought down the mountain. The Nelson Mandela Foundation CEO Sello Hatang, who had flown to Tanzania after hearing of Zulu’s death, told how he had roped the couple into participating in the expedition. “Little did he know that that was his final destination. To South Africa, I would like to say I’m really sorry that I didn’t bring Gugu Zulu back alive. At this very low moment for our country, this low moment for the Nelson Mandela Foundation and for Madiba’s legacy, we will say this is yet another mountain that we have to summit again,” an emotional Hatang said. Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula offered words of comfort, saying it had been a voluntary climb for a good cause and that nobody should feel blame. “Here before us, lies a story of goodwill that humanity and all races must follow. It is an inspirational story. It is tragic, but it will remain for us in history forever and forever.” Many people at the media briefing and watching the live broadcast were in tears as each member of the panel spoke. Zulu’s death at the prime of his life, leaving behind a wife and oneyear-old baby, is painful and tragic. But it was also deeply moving to see Hatang and the team members respecting the nation enough to account for what happened, even though they themselves were grief-stricken. Nobody had expected immediate and detailed answers but they felt it their responsibility to account to the nation. There could be no greater mark of true leadership. • Ranjeni Munusamy is a political journal ist and commentator for the Daily Maver ick. ranjeni.munusamy@gmail.com

and then there would be this huge disruption with the tea and coffee story. “Luckily I sell coffee machines so I would often take a coffee machine in to demonstrate - then I would make coffee for everyone - and sell the machine to some. I found that by doing that, when it came to me asking them for something they felt they had to give it to me because I had given them their coffee after all, so it actually worked for me. “When it came to taking the minutes, I was trained as a shorthand typist and I can type almost as fast as people can talk - so people relied on me to take the minutes. At first I was annoyed because I felt I couldn’t contribute to the meeting. “Then I worked out that I would plan what I had to say ahead of time and type it out so I would not have to type it into the minutes. I would take minutes while everyone was talking and I actually found that I remembered far more of what was going on. It gave me time to think and also I could refer to my notes and come up with good ideas at the end. “I always say to women who are in boardrooms, don’t act as if you are someone else. You are still a woman and it make sense to make the tea. My husband makes coffee for every person who comes to see him. They feel he is being humble and waiting on them, and he enjoys doing it. Its gives him time to think and is a great ice-breaker. So don’t be the Devil Wears Prada character, be that fabulous person that everyone wants to be around. Offer to make the tea and coffee. Take the minutes. Send them off straight away. Go the extra mile, and see how well it works for you.

BOUT 2 000 volunteers from Sibaya Casino staff, KwaZuluNatal businesses and local communities converged at Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom to pack 942 boxes, equaling 203 472 meals, for hungry children on 18 July 2016. In the spirit of International Nelson Mandela Day, volunteers spent 67 minutes in shifts, packing dried goods such as soya, rice, 23 vitamins and minerals and a soup mix to be delivered to hungry children around South Africa. Meals packed at Sibaya with the help of local businesses and caring volunteers will be distributed by Stop Hunger Now South Africa to KZN charities. Each meal box will feed a child one meal a day for an entire year. The event was part of the international challenge, Follow the Sun, organised by Stop Hunger Now South Africa and Sun International, which aimed to pack 10 million meals over seven days, from 13 to 20 July, in South Africa, Philippines,Malaysia, India, Italy, U.S. and Peru. The other participating Sun International properties included GrandWest in Cape Town, The Boardwalk in Port Elizabeth, Carnival City in Johannesburg and Sun City in the North West.

“We are heartened by the response from the community and businesses to the meal packing challenge.

“Alleviating hunger is something that is close to Sun International’s heart and we feel privileged to have

been involved in this worthwhile initiative. We thank all our volunteers for being part of it and helping us to

smile to all of them. They were treated to lunch and given a motivation talk on keeping up the great work with the theme, “Happy staff are productive staff”. They were given a Certificate of Appreciation. Outstanding workmanship, commitment, dedication and team work has resulted in our children section being transformed in an appealing and use-friendly environment. Comments received from staff:

acupuncture treats chronic back pain, numbness and cramps

B

ACK pain is quite a common problem these days, affecting people of all age groups. Back pain has many different forms like upper, lower and middle pain. CAUSES OF BACK PAIN Back muscles may get strained due to incorrect posture while standing sleeping or sitting for long periods, excessive body weight, repetitive bending or lifting of heavy objects. Slipped disc is another condition which is responsible for back pain. This happens when the cartilage disc of the vertebrae wear out and

press any nerve root. If the sciatica nerve root, located at the lower spine region, gets pressed then it leads to chronic lower back pain that often gets extended to the legs and is accompanied by numbness. Elderly people suffer from chronic back pain due to osteoarthritis affecting the spine, chronic back pain may get triggered by stress and anxiety. The involvement of emotional stress causes disc degeneration or herniation. Prolonged emotional stress creates a sympathetic dominant state in auto-

In some other cases, however, when circulation improves, the pain in the affected area intensifies and is then followed by repair of tissue and muscle relaxation. Proper circulation in the tissue is important not only for blood to nourish the tissue but also in enhancing the elimination of muscle fatigue and pain causing substances (eg. Lactic acid) thus resulting in healthy tissue. Acupuncture, cupping therapy and therapeutic massage offers great relief for your back pain. Five diseases your child can pick up at school

CHALAZIONS or hordeolums, often called styes, are red bumps that appear along the eyelids. They are due to blocked oil glands. Rarely, they can become infected, but typically they are swollen without a true infection. These may become tender or cause an irritation in the eye. They need to be treated medically or drained surgically by an ophthalmologist as they can recur leaving scar tissue. See Tongaat Eye Centre advert for more details. - Supplied

Are you getting enough calcium?

PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Milk is a form of calcium. CALCIUM is an important part of our diet but it can be difficult to tell if you’re getting enough from your diet and to know which foods you should be eating. Here are six questions to ask yourself. Calcium is vital for bone health, assisting in bone deposition, thereby preventing osteoporosis. It also plays a role in other bodily functions such as nerve transmission and muscle contraction. 1. How much calcium do I need? Most South Africans only manage to consume 500–600mg/day, meaning that we are falling short of our recommended daily intake for calcium. 2. Do I need to take a calcium supplement? Consuming calcium-rich foods is the best way to meet your calcium requirements. Only when you are unable to get sufficient calcium from your diet, should you consider supplementing to make up the difference. Milk and dairy products are a convenient source of bone-healthy vitamins and minerals (calcium, phosphorous and vitamin D). Calcium is however also found in other food sources. - Health24

nomic nervous system and leads to decreased blood flow to most of the organs, muscles and peripheral tissues. When blood flow to the lumber muscles is decreased, the muscles become tight, loose flexibility and are easily fatigued. TREATMENT WITH ACUPUNCTURE Acupuncture enhances blood circulation especially in the area that there is pain or discomfort. When circulation in the tissue improves, muscle relaxation occurs and immediate pain reduction occurs in many cases.

SCHOOL is a place for learning, but it also creates the perfect environment for an in fectious disease to spread like wildfire. After the winter holidays it’s time for millions of children to go back to school. And while they’re learning and taking part in sports, they’ll also be facing the risk of catching an infectious disease. Here are five of the most common dis eases, as well as an image to identify each one: Lice Head lice are tiny insects that feed on blood from the scalp. They are about the size of a sesame seed and are easily spotted, although they hide when exposed to light. If your child complains of an itchy head, there’s a good change they might have picked lice up at school. Lice can’t jump or fly, but crawl from head to head. Activities such as putting heads together to share secrets, and play ing games or sport increase the child’s risk. Chicken pox Chicken pox is highly contagious, but luckily you will soon notice if your child has the disease. It usually starts with a sudden fever and random small spots and blisters. It spreads through saliva and blisters on the skin and outbreaks are more common in winter and early spring. Pinworms Your child can become infected with pinworms by unintentionally ingesting (or inhaling) their eggs. Pinworms infest the intestines and lay eggs around the anus. A strong itching of the anal area, a rash around the anus and the presence of pin worm or pinworm stool around your child’s

An itchy, red and irritated eye is usually a sign of its presence, and children often wake up with the eye sealed shut with a yellow crust. It’s highly contagious and is spread through hand to eye contact. Any school

sport, physical activity or even just touch ing carry the risk of contracting conjuncti vitis. Strep throat Strep throat is caused by infection with the streptococcal bacterium and causes inflammation and swelling at the back of the throat and tonsils. A cough or congestion is usually not present. It is a common among children in close contact with each other and can be dangerous if left untreated. Health24

Honey can reduce the harmful side effects of smoking >> Honey contains minerals, proteins, organic acids and antioxidants

A

LMOST all smokers are well aware of the health risks their habit poses, but yet they struggle to kick the habit. New research suggest supplementing with wild honey could reduce the toxic effects of smoking. Smoking plays a role in many serious health issues: stroke, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular disease, coronary artery disease, to name but a few. And, despite having access to different kinds of smoking alternatives, many smokers remain loyal to traditional cigarettes. In light of this, research is looking deeper into the use of natural products to help smokers limit the damage they’re doing to their health. A recent study in Toxicological and Environmental Chemistry, Syaheedah et al. sought to find what impact the

antioxidants in honey has on the oxidative stress in smokers. Smoking and oxidative stress Smoking introduces free radicals into the body resulting in oxidative stress, decreased antioxidant status and negative health impacts. Honey supplementation has been effective in reducing the toxic effects of cigarette smoke in rats, yet prior to this study the effects of honey supplementation in chronic smokers was yet to be documented. Can Tualang honey reduce harmful side effects of smoking? Tualang Honey is 100% organic honey straight from the wild rainforest honey from Malaysia. The Giant Honey Bees (Apis dorsata) hang their honey combs from the branches of the Tualang Tree (Koompassia excelsa) to collect pollen and nectar from the surrounding rainforest.

This wild honey (not from a bee farm), is collected by workers risking their life climbing on very high Tualang trees that can grow up to 85 meters tall. Honey contains minerals, proteins, organic acids and antioxidants. Malaysian researchers Wan Syaheedah Wan Ghazali and Mahaneem Mohamed, et al. set out to determine the effects of Tualang honey on smokers after a 12-week supplementation on a group of 32 chronic smokers with two equal-sized control groups; one that was not supplemented and a group of non-smokers. They found oxidant activity in the smokers, likely caused by the free radicals in cigarettes. Oxidant activity can damage cell structure and function, leading to a host of health problems for the individual.

STRUGGLING with workout costs? Feel like your healthy body might be worth your unhealthy budget? We look at overspending and workouts. It’s super tricky getting that perfect life/workout balance. You’re doing the smart thing for your health by working out, but it may be hurting your bank balance. With gym-memberships in South Africa costing anything from around R199 to R1900 per month and all giving various different benefits (like a shoeshine bar and being able to use your membership in other countries!), it can get tricky knowing whether it’s all worth it. We look at working out according to your budget, your cost-per-workout and how you could save costs on your workouts. If you know you need to cut back on your workout-costs, but don’t know how much, consider following theadvice of GoGirl Finance. They recommend using a 50/30/20 budget – which breaks up your home pay into three: 50% of your pay goes to monthly fixed costs, 20% to flexible spending and 30% are financial goals and savings. A fixed workout cost, like a gym membership, should fit into the 50% fixed costs. Anything extra, like stan-

Add honey to diet to reduce effects of smoking. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

At the end of the 12 weeks, smokers who were supplemented with honey were found to have greatly improved antioxidant status. This strongly suggests that, due to its antioxidant and strong free radical ‘scavenging’ properties, honey can reduce oxidative stress. Syaheedah concludes “Our findings may suggest that honey can be used as a supplement among those who are exposed to free radicals in cigarette smoke, either as active or passive smokers, and so protect or reduce the risk of having cardiovascular dis-

dalone classes or new equipment goes into the 20% flexible spending category. This 20% of your budget is also where your groceries, hobbies and eating out goes, so make sure you plan well. Your cute workout clothes also fall into the 20% category. Working out your cost-per-workout may do wonders for making decisions regarding your workouts, LearnVest advises. You might be someone who spends thousands on your workouts, but you’re there, working out constantly. Your cost per workout would be much lower than someone who pays much less for their workout, but only uses it once in a while. LearnVest gives the following example: Let’s say – you spend R1000 per month on a gym membership and your friend spends R100 (I know, I know, this is hypothetical). You work out once a day and your friend works out once a month. Your cost-per-workout would be R1000 / 365 = R2.74. On the other hand, the cheaper gym membership that your friend never uses would work

eases.” Health24 asked Dr Mahaneem Mohamed if other types of honey could have a similar effect, and he responded that smokers can supplement with other types of honey, as long as the honey is pure. He says wild honey from many countries have been shown to have similar antioxidant properties. Organic or wild honey, that is un heat-treated, is readily available from retailers and health shops around the country. Tualang honey is available from the Tualang honey store. - Health24

out to R100/12 = R8.33 per workout. Have a look at the bottom of this article for some real-life examples of costper-workouts in South Africa. Know you need to cut back, but don’t know where to start? There are various ways of saving money on workouts: • There are loads of free exercise videos on Youtube you can follow. • If you like running, consider ditching the gym and going for a run outside. Make it a group activity and ask a friend to join you. If there’s one in your area, you can also join a free weekly Park Run (a 5km walk or run with others in a local park/running space). • If you decide to give up on your monthly gym membership, but still want to use some of the equipment, consider investing in a few basics, like kettlebells or resistance bands, for yourself. • If you’re close enough to a hiking trail, get hiking! And enjoy some of South Africa’s wonderful scenery along the way - Health 24

TRULY ALLIANCE TOTALLY ACCOUNTABLE TO THE PEOPLE

T

HE school holidays were packed with exciting activities for Protec pupils who took part in a variety of workshops. Grade 10 and 11 pupils chose steam cars and bridge building workshops. For the steam-car workshop pupil used kits designed by Professor Binden from the Mechanical Engineering Faculty at UKZN, while the bridge builders designed and built bridges using strips of balsa wood and Pratley Quickset. The three teams with the strongest bridges will participate in the SAICE KZN interschools competition on 4 August. “In addition to applying maths and physical science concepts in a practical and fun

way, these workshops develop good team work, problemsolving and communication skills. They also enable pupils to test their skills and aptitude in engineering and increase their understanding of technology and the environment.” said Protec Tongaat manager, Marion Takis. The Grade 12s focused on their studies attending enrichment classes in math and physical science, life science and accounting. The UKZN Science Centre also conducted practical activities with all pupils. Grade 10s focused on the heating and cooling curve of water. Grade 11s did Ohm’s Law, while the Grade 12s looked at the internal resistance of a battery.

Protec also ran a Grade 9 intervention programme to prepare pupils for entry into Protec next year. Pupils attended a week of extra lessons in math, English and life skills. Pupils with potential will be identified to attend Protec Saturday School classes in the third term and will hopefully join Protec in 2017. As a non-profit organisation Protec is entirely reliant on donations and it is thanks to the support of Protec’s financial partners such as the North Coast Courier, Altech, Tongaat Hulett, SISCDTF, SITFE, BMG, M&G Attridge Trust, Fulton Trust and FFS Refiners that these pupils are able to participate in these exciting opportunities. - Supplied.

While the app hasn’t quite made its way to South Africa yet, local users have managed to download it via the app hosting site apkmirror.com sending the country into a craze — with unavoidable hoards of users clustering around what are normally arbitrary locations collecting pokeballs, eggs and potions. The app has pinned areas outside of places of worship, post offices and other landmarks as virtual markers from where users can collect items within the game. Pokémon, short for “Pocket Monsters”, is the hit TV series from the nineties which has since spawned the most downloaded app in U.S. history — the goal behind it being to collect as many virtual creatures as possible and become a master.

phone GPS to track Pokémon around them. Once the user taps a Pokémon, the smartphone camera is activated and the user is able to photograph it, as if it were in front of them. A pokéball is then used to catch them with the flick of a finger toward them. Pokéstops are places where users can collect more pokeballs after finishing them, and Gyms are places users can battle to gain more experience points and level up. The user then has to walk around before new Pokémon appear. Health benefits Going back to the eggs While users are forced to walk around to actually catch Pokémon, eggs in the game can be incubated and

once walking, either two kilometres, five kilometres or 10km, hatch a new Pokémon. Most smartphones already encourage users to complete a 10 000-step-aday walk with the device’s pedometer to track step count. Pokémon Go user’s location of the smartphone forces the user to physically walk around to hatch Eggs. A small display shows what Pokémon are near and can be tracked, but is often inaccurate, again forcing the user to walk countless steps to actually find them. The walking aspect makes it far different from any other fitness apps available for download today. Pokémon Go CEO John Hanke told Business Insider in an interview: “A lot of fitness apps come with a lot of ‘baggage’ that ends up making you feel like ‘a failed Olympic athlete’ when you’re just trying to get fit … Pokémon Go is designed to get you up and moving by promising you Pokémon as rewards, rather than placing pressure on you.”

times and tasks. This creates self-imposed pressure to get things done and ultimately removes the procrastination that befalls many matric students. • Get up early, getting all your scheduled study time in early can give you a greater sense of achievement and freedom to enjoy the other things in your life. This is more important during the weekends and holiday periods, studying at midnight to catch up on your schedule will not help your concentration and retention. • Reward yourself, give yourself time away from your studies, but only if you deserve it. If you’ve studied consistently during the week then take a day off to relax with family or friends. Matric is tough and rest periods allow you time to recover and regain motivation to push through, so do not rob yourself enjoy the year. These tips are simple to implement. The website discourages studying for long hours, and at the end not being able concentrate.

The One Year Memorial Service of the Late

Mr R.G. NAIDOO (MACK)

Death involves certain developments that weaken and extinguish life. It does not affect the Atma; the Atma has no death. It cannot be destroyed. Therefore, one should not fear death. Death is but another stage of life. However long one suffers from illness or however severe the injury, death can happen only when Time signals the right moment. When the yearning for living ends, there can be no more birth. Sathya Sai Baba, Vidya Vahini

>> Pietersen looks forward to another season in Durban

T

HE Sunfoil Dolphins have resigned global T20 star Kevin Pietersen for the upcoming RAM Slam T20 Challenge, adding a fresh injection of energy as the franchise prepares for the 2016/17 domestic cricket season. Pietersen has again signed a fivematch deal that will see him represent the KZN franchise in the second half of the round robin stage and will also turn out for the Dolphins in the playoff and final should the team progress to the knockout phase of the competition. “I’m as excited as anything to have signed with the Dolphins again,” explains Pietersen. “I had such a wonderful season with them last season and I really enjoyed the team, the camaraderie and the competition so it was a very easy decision to sign again for this season’s T20 competition. “It will be great to getting back onto

the cricket field again and I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone in Durban again as well. “Here’s to a successful campaign!” he adds. While disappointed to see Sunfoil Dolphins CEO, Pete de Wet’s time in charge of the KZN franchise draw to a close shortly, Pietersen is relishing the opportunity of working with newly appointed head coach, Grant Morgan again. “It has been an absolute pleasure to deal with Pete (de Wet) – I’m sorry to see him leave the Dolphins, but I’m really excited to work with Grant Morgan who I know very well,” says Pietersen. “I was privileged enough to spend some time with Kevin during my time at Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL back in 2009,” explains Morgan. “He was captain of that side and made an indelible impact on all the players, especially the youngsters.”

“Its great to have Kevin coming back and playing for the Dolphins again this season. He is a world class player in all formats of the game and in T20 he is no doubt one of the best there has ever been.” While Pietersen’s mentoring role was again evident during his time with the Dolphins last season, taking players such as Andile Phehlukwayo under his wing and guiding the exciting all-rounder, it was his effort with the bat that left the most telling impression. The former Maritzburg College pupil and KZN age group player blasted 401 runs in just seven innings – including two hundreds and two fifties at an average of 80.20 and a strike of 172.84 – that ignited the competition as a whole and played a key role in seeing the Dolphins reach the final. Outgoing CEO, De Wet is another thrilled by Pietersen’s return and be-

lieves his inclusion in the squad’s T20 plans will yield positive results for the franchise. “I’m extremely pleased we’ve been able to sign Kevin to the Sunfoil Dolphins again for this season’s RAM Slam T20 Challenge,” says De Wet. “He added immense value to our franchise last year and having a guy like him around can only do wonders for the Dolphins again this time around.” “I would like to wish the squad all the best of luck and hope that they will continue to put in the hard yards in the next couple of weeks and months leading up to the season. “I have no doubt that they will bring success to Dolphins franchise in the PHOTO: SUPPLIED very near future,” says De Wet.
