A number of reasons to celebrate Phone: 032 945 2903

This week ONLINE

MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime

We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

Wanted robbers caught ANDILE SITHOLE

T

WO men, suspected to be part of a group of armed robbers who have been terrorising residents locally and around Durban, were arrested in Trenance Park, Verulam on Monday 26 September. The two men, aged between 25 and 30, are linked to multiple cases of house robberies and hijacking that have been taking in Verulam, Pinetown, Cato Ridge and Malvern since January. According to Verulam SAPS the Crime Intelligence Unit received a tip-

off last week about two suspects enroute to Verulam to commit robbery in Inanda Road near Trenance Park. SAPS spokesperson in Verulam Captain Mark Prakasim told Weekly that the suspects were travelling on Inanda Road when policemen spotted them. “Our Vispol Task Team and Crime Prevention Unit members were sent to Inanda Road. They noticed a vehicle that matched the description of the suspects’ car. “There were two occupants in the vehicle. Police stopped the driver to

conduct search. The driver was found in possession of a N75 MM pistol and five rounds of ammunition. “The other suspect was also found in possession of Norico 9MM pistol and eight rounds of ammunition. Serial numbers for both firearms were filed off. According to the information received from Crime Intelligence Unit both suspects were part of an armed gang terrorising the community,” he said. The gang used to strike at night and hold up families at gunpoint demanding cash. “The suspects are linked to hijacking and house robberies around Durban,” said Prakasim. Both suspects appeared briefly at Verulam Magistrate’s Court and the matter was adjourned for further investigations. “It is a major breakthrough by our police working in partnership with Crime Intelligence Unit.” In a separate incident another two suspects were arrested in Trenance Park on 22 September. It alleged that the suspects are working with the gang committing house robberies and hijacking in Verulam. Prakasim said the police were patrolling on Inanda Road when they

Incompetent, but connected Despite Myeni’s dreadful record, she was retained as chairperson of the newly appointed SAA board as a “compromise”. The question that must be asked is who was the compromise with? It is no secret that Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, who is responsible for the political oversight of SAA, wanted Myeni gone from the time he was reappointed to his post. There was also tension between Myeni and the former Finance minister Nhlanhla Nene, which is believed to have been a contributing factor to his axing in December 2015. So who is it that was so determined to retain Myeni on the SAA board that there had to be a “compromise”? It is not only Myeni who enjoys special protection from an undeclared source.

Motsoeneng has turned the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) into his personal fiefdom. This is despite a report by the public protector and court judgments finding him unqualified for his position in management and guilty of maladministration for inflating his salary and that of other SABC executives. Like Myeni, Motsoeneng had a disastrous reign at the SABC, including rubbishing the credibility of the public broadcaster through his absurd editorial policies. He also used the resources of the SABC to finance a cult-like following and commissioned a choir to sing praise songs about him. This week, the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) in Bloemfontein rejected Motsoeneng’s bid to appeal against an earlier court ruling that found his appointment at chief operating officer should be set aside. This leaves Motsoeneng with no more legal options, as he clearly has no grounds to take the matter to the Constitutional Court. While both Myeni and Motsoeneng have been exposed as incompetent and unworthy of their positions, they

remain conceited, believing they are entitled to their high-flying jobs. Myeni arrived late for the finance committee meeting in Parliament this week, where she was supposed to account for the performance of the airline. She told the committee she had been unwell but it is clear that she also does not take parliamentary accountability seriously. In response to questions about the airline’s appalling financial results under her leadership and whether it would not be in the best interests of SAA for her to resign, Myeni was indifferent. “I did not appoint myself. It was a Cabinet decision,” she said. Motsoeneng has been equally cavalier after the SCA decision rendered his position invalid. Speaking at the funeral of Kwaito star Mandoza yesterday, Motsoeneng tastelessly used the platform to blow his own trumpet. “You cannot decide for my future, I will decide. “If I leave the SABC it will not be the first time. Hlaudi is stress-free,” Motsoeneng told mourners. In a dizzying ego trip, he went on to say: “For some of us, intelligence is in our blood.” It is not clear what the future holds for these two people and the other incompetents who contaminate the public service. Myeni is supposed to leave SAA after a year, but who knows whether her special political protection might result in an extended stay, or perhaps another highflying post she is unworthy of. Motsoeneng, for now, remains at the SABC as an “ordinary employee”, as if it is a PETRUS MOLELEKWA voluntary club that he can remain a member of. These two people MAKING YOUR HOME LOAN MY BUSINESS personify the state of If home finance leaves you feeling stressed and uncertain, perhaps it’s time to talk incompetence and to SA Home Loans. RANJENI MUNUSAMY

IF there are two people who epitomise the state of the public service, they are Dudu Myeni and Hlaudi Motsoeneng. Myeni, the chairperson of the South African Airways (SAA) board, is testament to the fact that political connections trump competence. Myeni has presided over a disastrous term at the national carrier, with interim financial statements presented at Parliament this week showing a loss of R5,6 billion. This is close to R1 billion more than the airline was expected to lose in the 2014/15 financial year.

It was like I was their only client. It felt so good

Cape Comedy icon Marc Lottering has thrilled comedy audiences for years with his signature style of storytelling, enjoying widespread acclaim with his box office hit shows From the Cape Flats with Love, I Don’t Work on Sundays and most recently Hashtag Lottering. He has played the biggest stages in the country and toured internationally, enter taining audiences in London, Australia and Dubai. Equally accomplished is SA comedy leg

end, Mark Banks, winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Savanna Com ics’ Choice Awards last year. This is the man who has had South Africa “ripped” with his tellitlikeitis, in yourface brand of comedy, offering a unique, often sarcasticladen, perspective on current affairs and issues that really cause us bother. Also participating in the Carnival of Funny is Durban’s own Neville Pillay a firm favourite in KZN, this hilarious standup comedian, accomplished writer and actor (Attack of the Indi an Werewolf, ‘1 Million Reasons, Curry And Vice), and awardwin ning morning radio show host is practically a household name. Comedy goers can also look forward to the mirthladen antics of Kelvin Stoffels, Arnotte Payne, Khanyisa Bhunu (JHB), Masood Boomgaard, Gino Fernandez (CPT), Devin Gray (CPT), Jem Atkins and Neil Green, who will all feature over the weekend. Ballito friends conquer Kili >> “It is the climb. one thing to Waiting to greet us at Madecide to climb a chame gate were 33 porters and two cooks. Everything was mountain, it is quite weighed and recorded and then, off we set, ambling upanother to be on top of wards through a magnificent forA rt it,” Herbe est. Before long, the sun had set and we were in the dark, making our Simon I OWN a bright orange suitcase which was unmistakeable on the runway among the rest of our gear, as we taxied off on the last leg of our inbound journey to Kilimanjaro. We were finally on the way, but our luggage evidently, was not. Not the most auspicious of starts to an epic adventure. Earlier in the day, a delayed flight out of Johannesburg had started us off on the wrong foot and now 11 tired and stressed adventurers stared in disbelief at the receding suitcases. Precision Air, as it turns out, was anything but and what followed was like an episode of Faulty Towers. We arrived in Tanzania to intense heat and the promise of a majestic mountain in the distance. Then it dawned on us with a certain amount of trepidation that we were going to walk to the top of that awesome monolith. An aeroplane flew overhead and the realisation that we could reach out and almost touch it from the top of the mountain did little to settle our nerves. Waiting to greet us was Simon the driver. From his reaction to the news of our missing gear, we deduced that this was standard practice. An hour later we had checked into a hotel called “Springland”, an establishment not unlike The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. We soon met up with our head guide, Juma, a slight fellow with a rolling accent and a calm disposition. This was just as well as morale was low and we had seven near hysterical women wailing for their bags. The alternative plan was to hire equipment from the hotel and share what little toiletries we had between us, but old kit and very used sleeping bags was cold comfort compared to the top of the range gear we had all acquired for the trip… and we were not amused. Luckily the new day saw some of the men in our group heading back to the airport and they returned triumphant with the lost luggage. We were off – a few hours later than planned, but we were at last on the way to the start of

way towards the first night’s camp by torchlight and the sliver of a moon peeping through the forest canopy. Black Colobus monkeys rustled in the trees and we saw a little civet dart across the path in front of us. The mood was upbeat and the promise of a warm sleeping bag and hot meal spurred us on. Daybreak brought the realisation that we had walked 11km the day before, most of it in the dark and al-

long-drop ablutions is something not many will forget. Some conquered their fear of heights, but scaling up the Baranco Wall unaided – others settled into extreme camping for the first time, and more still found solace in nature and the unspoiled stark beauty that the mountain offered. Finally after days of winding our way upwards towards the sun, we assembled in Barfu - snow hut in Swahili – camp, an unremarkable strip of land 7km from the Summit. We were told to dress and get some sleep, not an easy feat at 3pm in the afternoon. The wind started howling and I leaped out of my sleeping bag to put on another layer of windproof gear. I looked like the Michelin man, four layers of clothing, two sets of gloves, a fleece hat and a thermal scarf. At 10pm they came to wake us, but believe me, none of us was really able to sleep. Your nerves are so unsettled that you could be forgiven for thinking that you are at the start of the 400m sprint at the Olympics with the world watching. The guides did the last check, made sure we were suited up correctly and that our glasses were clean, our noses did not run and we had our backpacks on the right way. They wiped our brows, dabbed our noses with tissues and tucked our shirts into our pants and away we went. We had a pecking order and had to shout out our numbers every now and again to ensure everyone was still okay. Juma took the lead and set the pace and Allen, another guide, brought up the rear. He carried our emergency oxygen and some coffee for halfway. Two lesser guides appeared from nowhere on summit day and brought up the flank. They both had head torches and would tap us on the shoulders every now and again to check our response and look into our eyes. The summit was 1,300m up over a distance of 7km. It took us 10 hours. You put one foot in front of the other and just keep going. The wind was howling, no one was talking. As you looked up to the top of the mountain you could see the hundreds of little headlamps from other groups of climbers ahead of you. Climbers passed us and sped upwards, only to be found sitting next to the trail a few meters higher, some in tears as you slowly passed them again…the mountain cannot be

Scenery started to change and eventual ly you could be forgiven for thinking you were on the moon. though we felt strong, you could feel the stress on the legs and little aches and pains appeared from nowhere. The next stage of the journey was up towards Shiva camp and it soon became evident that some were going to feel the altitude more than others. Already some in the group felt nauseous and others had headaches so bad they were in tears. We walked each day until we could go no more, stopping only to have a drink of water before pressing on. When we did rest for a long time, we could be reassured that we were still very far from camp. Our guides would assure us that we were always just “10 minutes” from our next stop – which meant anything from 15 and 160 minutes. I think if they had really told us the truth, some of us would have just sat down and refused to go any further. Each day brought new challenges, the higher we went the thinner the air got and the worse the headaches. Scenery started to change and eventually you could be forgiven for thinking you were on the moon. The nights were freezing and a trip to the dreaded

rushed, you have to do it “pole pole” (slowly slowly). Eventually the stars gave way to daybreak, a thin sliver of burnt orange light announced the arrival of the new day as we stepped up to Stella point at the top of the mountain. By now we were exhausted. Already the place was choked with the walking wounded - groups that had summited ahead of you and were now starting to make their way down. People were crying from pain and relief, others were being dragged off the mountain, disorientated, exhausted, some with broken limbs, some bleeding from the mouth. Guides and porters have their hands full trying to steady the ship and get everyone down as soon as possible. But ahead of us was yet another challenge. Stella Point is only the top of the mountain, not the highest point, and we set off on one of the longest journeys of my life for the final victory. This was where you separate the men from the boys. Those last 200meters is what Kilimanjaro is made

of. Finally, after what seemed like hours of torture, we reached Uhuru. It is here you break down and cry, from relief and gratitude and the realisation that you are one of the very few people on this earth who will ever have the privilege of stepping up to such greatness. I don’t think this escaped any of us and to say we all made it… together… has brought a new bond to remarkable friends now bound by the journey forever. - By Natasha Barnes

Acupuncture treatment for cervical spondylosis What is cervical spondylosis? Cervical spondylosis is a disorder caused by abnormal wear on the cartilage and bones of the neck with degeneration and mineral deposits in the cushions between the vertebrae. The bones of the neck are called cervical vertebrae. The cushions between the vertebrae are called cervical disks. The abnormal wear on the cartilage and bones of the neck can gradually compress one or more of the nerve roots. When the nerve roots are compressed, pain in the neck and arm, weakness and changes in sensation will occur. In advanced cases of cervical spondylosis, the spinal cord may be become compressed. If the spinal cord becomes compressed, the pain, weakness and changes in sensation will also occur in the legs. Cervical spondylosis is also called cervical osteoarthritis. What causes cervical spondylosis?

Cervical spondylosis is caused by chronic degeneration of the cervical spine, the cushions between the neck vertebrae and joints between the bones of the cervical spine. A previous neck injury can predispose a person to cervical spondylosis. What are the symptoms of cervical spondylosis? Can cervical spondylosis be treated? Yes it can be treated. Treatment is aimed at treating the root cause and relieving pain and preventing permanent spinal cord and nerve root injury.

With the increase in the number of professionals who sit for hours doing desk work or in front of the computer and call centre jobs sitting in one posture, the number of people suffering with cervical spondylosis is on the rise. HE Tongaat Anti Drug Forum hosted a presentation and prize giving ceremony at the Gandhi’s Hill Temple Hall recently. All primary and secondary schools were invited to participate in various categories including presentation of speeches, poster competitions and drama for primary and secondary schools. Jacky Chetty, retired principal who was the convenor of the judges, was full of praise at the standard of the competition. He complimented pupils for the effort that they put in preparing their items. The forum was also commended for the programme which highlighted the dangers of drug abuse and drug addiction. The manner by which all role players including pupils, parents, teachers and other social partners who are being brought under one programme at a single event was exemplary and noteworthy. All schools are urged to include the forum’s programme in their annual year plan and calendar and have regular drug awareness programmes at their schools.

The Volvo XC90

Volvo is now semiautonomous T

HE Volvo XC90, which is the reigning WesBank / SAGMJ Car of the Year in South Africa, has been updated for 2017. Pilot Assist, fitted as standard for semi-autonomous driving, and PowerPulse diesel technology, for a lag-free diesel driving experience, are both now available in South Africa. Pilot Assist now standard on all models In accordance with the forthcoming Volvo S90, the XC90 now features the latest version of Volvo’s Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving technology as standard on all models. Able to take control of acceleration, braking and steering at speeds up to 130 km/h, the support system is designed to make the daily commute – or indeed a longer journey – more relaxing and enjoyable. The all-new XC90 pioneered the original Pilot Assist system which could be activated at speeds up to 50 km/h – making the typical South African traffic jam an absolute breeze and allowing the driver

to relax behind the wheel while enjoying the Swedish luxury and Scandinavian simplicity of Volvo’s flagship SUV. With the latest upgrade, a lead vehicle is no-longer required, and the XC90 is able to maintain safe semi-autonomous driving provided that lane markings are clearly visible on both sides of the vehicle, at speeds up to 130 km/h. Important to note is that Pilot Assist is an outright support system and has not been designed for the driver to remove their attention from the task of driving. Fully-autonomous Volvos, which will allow for complete hands-off and feet-off autonomous driving, will be available in the future – the first examples of which will be driven by real customers in Gothenburg, Sweden, as part of Volvo’s Drive Me programme, in 2017. The inclusion of Pilot Assist as standard means that all XC90 models now also come standard with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which uses radar to manage acceleration and braking in a more conven-

tional manner, without steering control. PowerPulse diesel technology eliminates turbo lag Introduced globally on the forthcoming Volvo S90 and now also available for 2017 in the XC90 D5 AWD is Volvo’s world-first PowerPulse technology. Geared to eliminate the effects of turbo lag, PowerPulse turns the Drive-E D5 diesel engine into a lag-free, smoother powerhouse. Volvo Cars is the only car maker using such technology in production vehicles. PowerPulse draws air from the air filter via a compressor into a pressurised two-litre tank. When required, the compressed air is fed by a valve into the exhaust manifold to instantly spool up the turbo. The tank automatically refills after each burst, and the compressed air remains on hand at all times to provide extra boost – on pull-away and during lowspeed driving. Naturally with such an upgrade, output has been increased and efficiency has been improved. Power has increased to 173 kW at 4 000 rpm (up from 165 kW) and torque is up by 10 Nm to 480 Nm between 1 750 and 2 250 rpm. Efficiency remains exceptional, with average fuel economy on We’re turning 2 but we’re going to spoil you!!! the combined cycle now 5.7-litres per 100 km (down from For the month of October, we’re giving out gifts 5.8) and carbon galore with new tyre purchases. emissions now even lower, at 149 g/km AND every purchase of 2 or more tyres will be (down from 152). entered into a lucky draw for a fabulous braai set! “These two new technological addiJust in time for summer! tions to the XC90 range will further Come in and take advantage of our everyday boost its value and driver enjoyment,” low prices and get a FREE suspension check! comments Volvo Car South Africa MD, We offer all premium and budget tyres, Greg Maruszewski. balancing, alignment and repairs. “Pilot Assist really makes those long highway drives far more enjoyable, especially when you find yourself in a traffic jam. Tongaat cricket team beats Chatsworth United TONGAAT Cricket Club clinched their first victory in their opening game of the 2016/2017 KZN Castle T20 series against Chatsworth United with a decisive win by 8 wickets on Sunday. Tongaat Cricket Club won the toss and elected to field. Anthony Pillay and Rishen Madhoe lead the bowling attack. Pillay (3211) demonstrated excellent bowling upfront as he rumbled Chat sworth’s top order claiming two quick wick ets. Tongaat then introduced their spinners, and this brought debutant Bradley Goun den and Priyesh Bachu into the attack.

Gounden, Tongaat’s ‘destroyer’, showed an excellent display of spin bowling finish ing with figures of 4410. Tongaat’s spin ners cleaned up Chatsworth’s middle and lower order with Bachu (3121). Joelin Nai du claimed the last wicket of his first deliv ery of the game (0.110) as Tongaat Cricket Club bowled out Chatsworth United for a dismal 56. Tongaat headed the run chase with openers Ushveer Mungal and Kavil Madhoe. Mungal (4) was caught out early in his innings, as Madhoe (15) showed and excel lent display of big hitting as he was caught

out by a stunning display of fielding and team work by Chatsworth United. This brought into the attack, Theoshan Naidoo (13*) and Dharmesh Suklall (20*) who to gether steadied the ship and took Tongaat to an empathic win over Chatsworth Unit ed. Bradley Gounden received the Danny Noharis Man of the Match token for his great performance on debut. Members of Tongaat Cricket Club are urging the community to get behind them and support the exciting games of cricket played by local talent. Supplied.
