This week east griqualand ONLINE EDITORIAL COMMENT

A number of reasons to celebrate extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime

continues to destroy some of our communities. However, the one thing that continues to stand undefeated is the spirit of the Upper Highway community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

T has been almost three months since Zingisa Phophoyi (19) was buried in Kokstad, and according to reports, her mother Nomnikelo Phophoyi remains inconsolable. She wants to know from her daughter’s murderer, Lungisa Jaca, why he murdered her. Jaca was arrested and sentenced to 15 years on 13 September after confessing to the murder in court. Zingisa was in matric at Carl Malcomess High School, and was found dead in a field outside Shayamoya on 28 August. Her body had bruises on her face, four stab wounds in

her chest and she had been strangled. Nomnikelo spoke to Fever for the first time since losing her daughter. She said her daughter fell preg-

She said she wants the case to start afresh in order for her to get to the truth and feels that the 15year sentence is not enough. She recently applied for fostercare grant for her grandchild and was told by social workers to get the details of the father. When she tried to get details about Jaca from the police she discovered he had lied about his name Jaca, when in fact his surname is Mbelwana. “What worries me is that he has two surnames and I suspect he is hiding something. “My family wants the case to start from the begin PHOTOS: SIPHELELE NKETO ning so

Initiation season begins SIPHELELE NKETO Siphelele@media24.com INITIATION season started on a high note after a traditional ceremony was held in Kokstad for young boys getting them ready for their traditional passage to manhood. Last Saturday scores of young boys celebrated by singing traditional songs and carrying sticks preparing to go to the bush as the December holidays are mostly used as initiation season in Kokstad. At the traditional ceremony - umgubho - cows were slaughtered as the traditional practice of sending boys to the bush. The Coloured community also attended in support of their boys who have chosen this traditional way of a passage to manhood. An initiation committee, known as Indlondlo, was established many years ago to strictly control initiation schools in Kokstad and boys are screened for high blood pressure, diabetes and other diseases before they go to bush. Indlondlo chairperson Benny Khobo said their initiation school welcomes the boys. “We are going to meet stakeholders, including Department of Co-operate Governance and Traditional Affairs regarding next year’s celebration of welcoming initiates from the bush.” More than 200 initiates graduated last year under the Indlondlo Initiation School.

Prosecutor charged with corruption A

40-YEAR-OLD Ixopo Magistrate’s Court Public Prosecutor was arrested and charged with corruption on Monday. Hawks members of the Serious Corruption Investigations Unit received information that the prosecutor had demanded money from a complainant asking that the PP not charge him with stock theft. “An undercover operation was conducted and he was

caught red handed while accepting money. He was immediately arrested on the court premises,” said Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo from the Hawks. The PP appeared in Durban Specialised Commercial Court on Tuesday and was granted R1 000 bail. The case was adjourned to 20 January, 2017. In another incident Durban Commercial Crime members arrested a 33-year-old senior

Home Affairs official for fraud. The official was suspected of helping a foreign national obtain a fraudulent South African passport. He was arrested with his partner in crime, who both appeared in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court on Wednesday. They were granted R1 500 bail each. The case was postponed to 20 January, 2017. - Supplied.

Awaiting trial prisoners escape POLICE are searching for nine awaiting trial prisoners who escaped from Maluti SAPS holding cells on 17 November. It is suspected that they cut two inner cell doors and a security gate and climbed onto the roof using blankets as ladders. They then cut open the roof grill and escaped. The prisoners were in custody for murder, rape, housebreakings and theft. Police spokesperson Captain Raphael Motloung asked people not to apprehend the prisoners because they are dangerous, they must immediately inform the SAPS. “These prisoners are dangerous,” said Motloung. - Supplied.

THE festive season is ahead and people with sinister intentions are targeting Sassa beneficiaries with the intention of cheating them through all sorts of scams. Social grant beneficiaries have been inundated with text messages urging them to obtain new cards, which are green in colour before January, 2017. Sassa never communicates with beneficiaries via SMS and beneficiaries are warned not to respond to any SMS these imposters send to them. Sassa advises all beneficiaries not to fall for this scam because there are no new Sassa cards and it is not true that beneficiaries should get these cards before 1 January, 2017. Beneficiaries should be on the lookout for people requesting their personal and card details pretending to be from Sassa. “Sassa said it conducts businesses from its own offices and beneficiaries should not accept invitations to any other office. “The other thing that beneficiaries should be aware of is that the Sassa card is not green in colour. The only valid Sassa card has the colours of the South African flag and it will never be replaced by a card that is green in colour,” said Sassa national spokesperson, Kgomoco Diseko. The danger of responding to these scams is that beneficiaries could be stripped of their cash or unusual deductions, which they never authorised, would come off their grants. Beneficiaries must not give their personal details or card details to strangers because this can lead to identity theft. “Once a criminal syndicate has your personal details, they can commit fraud using your name,” said Diseko. Beneficiaries should ignore the SMS message and if unsure, they should call Sassa on 0800 60 10 11. - Supplied.

Three suspects were arrested after being found in possession of dagga worth about R1 000 on the black market. “A 35-year-old man was arrested for assaulting a man in Matatiele,” said Motloung. - Supplied.

There is a big one in Barclay Street between Main and Hope streets, which is a huge concern, even though the streets were recently “upgraded” by the Greater Kok-

Public Relations Officer of Kokstad Chamber of Commerce Margi Fleming said the chamber has requested a schedule of planned maintenance and upgrades of all roads in Kokstad. “Potholes in Kokstad are shocking and are causing considerable damage to vehicles. “The municipality is requested to maintain roads.” In the Fever, 28 October issue, an article was published about faded road markings in the CBD and a con-

A COMMUNITY meeting organised by Greater Kokstad Municipality was under tight protection by members of Public Order Police and private security guards in and around JJ Mhlongo Hall in Horseshoe last Thursday. The meeting was held to present an IDP and the election of ward committee members. It was the second one to be held after elections in August. The first meeting was disrupted by community members claiming that it had not been organised properly. GKM speaker, Zolani Mhlongo, ward councillor Nonyamezelo Lusawana, councillors and senior municipality officials attended this second meeting. A community member Eric Nkamba demanded answers from speaker Mhlongo about a letter that was sent to the municipality on 28 September. Suspended workers allegedly on full pay SIPHELELE NKETO Siphelele@media24.com ABOUT 53 Matatiele Local Municipality workers are unsure about their future since being suspended in July for participating in a strike in April over protective work clothing. Some road-maintenance workers claim they had to work without gloves, helmets, overalls and masks and had asked the municipality on many occasions to provide them with these items, but unsuccessfully. At a disciplinary hearing attended by their union representatives and the municipality’s legal teams last week nothing was said about their future. At the hearing workers wanted their charge sheet to be written in their mother tongue so they could understand the charges against them. The hearing was cancelled and rescheduled for January 2017. Members of South African Municipal Workers Union from Mhlontlo, Umzimvubu, Nyandeni and KSD Municipality picketed outside the hearing in solidarity with the suspended workers. The workers say they have been asking the municipality for protective wear for four years. Fever discovered that the suspended workers allegedly remain on full pay. Municipal spokeswoman, Olwethu Gwanya said the municipality cannot employ new workers because the case against them is unresolved. “There are workers who are doing extra duties covering for the suspended workers.”

Hiking club members awarded MEMBERS of the Mqatsheni Hiking and Environmental Solutions Club received certificates from the Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Municipality and Heritage KwaZuluNatal recently. The group participated in the rock art site and hiking guide programme. The programme was to capacitate youth in tourism and teach them how to protect the Southern Drakensberg rock art sites and prevent them from being vandalised.

“We also trained the youth on how to guide visitors who hike along the site that is more than 1 000 years old. This training also forms part of job creation and encourages entrepreneurship through tourism,” said Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Municipality Communications Officer, Sikhumbuzo Sethuntsa. In January, 2017 the Mqatsheni Hiking and Environmental Solutions Club will host an event where visitors will be shown the beauty of the rock art site. Dignitaries at the handover of certificates included Dugle Smith, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Municipality Local Economic Development manager, Andile Zwezwe, tourism officer, Sikhumbuzo Mlibeni, Mqatsheni Youth Hiking chairman and Selest Rossouw, Heritage KZN senior rock art officer. - Supplied.

Kokstad recording studio to open SIPHELELE NKETO Siphelele@media24.com BUSINESSMAN Lundi Mtatambi in tends opening a recording studio, enabling artists to release quality music that easily marketable in Kok stad by February. The recording studio is registered un der the LPM Music label and artists will be managed by the Burgundi Media Group. “My aim is to ensure that artists pro duce quality songs without having to go to Durban or Johannesburg to record.

“The studio will also help artists ar range bookings, gigs, and with branding and marketing,” said Mtatambi. Artists who have already signed to the studio include KSDK, Vama, Gama beats, LGL, Socik Soul and TDoz. KSDK manager Khaya Mkatu will manage artists, under Burgundi Media, when the studio opens next year. “Local artists are now using a home studio in Bongweni Township for record ings, which is not good enough to pro duce quality songs. Now artists will no longer have to travel far and pay lots of money to record songs.”

Grade RR pupils graduate SIPHELELE NKETO Siphelele@media24.com ABOUT 95 Grade RR children from four pre-schools - Luncedo, Khanyiselani, Lwazi and Zamkele graduated at Thuntulwana Hall in Bhongweni last Friday. The graduation ceremony was attended by parents, teachers and officials from Department of Social Development. A total of 46 pre-schools in Kokstad are governed by Greater Kokstad Forum. Chairperson of the forum,

Thandi Ntozakhe told parents to buy uniforms for their children as they are going to Grade R next year. “Our pre-schools only accommodate four-year-old children in Grade RR and when they reach five they go to Grade R. Children are taught how to write, identify colours and numbers. “Next year we need parents to accompany their children when going to school to make sure they are safe.” Ntozakhe thanked parents for working with the forum and wished everyone happy new year.

placed orders for them. “I make wedding dresses, gowns, traditional clothes and suits for men. Nurses, doctors, municipal employees and new brides are my clients and I want to get more.” She encouraged young people to take fashion design up as a career. “The country needs more designers who will come up with new ideas. I am planning to open a fashion design school at Underberg so that the youth won’t have to go far for fashion design courses.” She completed a fashion design diploma at the Jabu Academy of Fashion Design in Durban last year. MEC for Sport, Arts, Recreation and Culture Bongi Sithole-Moloi was impressed with her designs and encouraged people to promote fashion in the area.

LEASURE was the order of the day at the Harry Gwala Summer Cup 2016 at Kilimon Racecourse in Underberg recently. The traditional race was started in the area by men and boys many years ago for entertainment, but government took over in 2005 and upgraded it, making a new race track, adding ablution blocks and a permanent water supply. Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Municipality Mayor Ngeneleni Mncwabe said horse racing is a popular sport in the area that contributes to the local economy. KZN MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation Bongi Sithole-Moloi called on young people to adopt a healthy lifestyle by participating in recreational sporting activities. “People must eat healthy food and avoid alcohol and substance abuse. The Harry Gwala Summer Cup contributes towards economic develop-

ment and I want the event to get bigger to benefit traders.” At the event winning jockeys were presented with trophies and money. Jockey Plaza Mtshali from Uthukela District Municipality was awarded by Sithole-Moloi with a trophy after him and his horse, Sigwebosentambo, won the first race. The youngest jockey, Luphindile Nkosana (16), from Kokstad, also received a trophy after winning the second race. Underberg fashion designers showcased their items at the event and added a touch of glamour.
