This week east griqualand ONLINE EDITORIAL COMMENT

A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. To those people who are continuously going the

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto ries. This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses sion coverage because you never know what to ex pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the byelections and once again, hoping for positive change. We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world. The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking skyline together with a host of won derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa. After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world. South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). Matatiele changes lives mayor SIPHELELE NKETO Siphelele@media24.com MATATIELE Local Municipal Mayor Momelezi Mbedla told more than 1 000 community members that the municipality has changed many lives. Mbedla tabled his State of the Municipality Address recently at Sandfontein village outside Cedarville, and during his address he acknowledged that there are electricity challenges that locals are facing. He said during the past five years the municipality has spent millions of rand on building new access roads, bridges, surface roads, community halls and has electrified many areas, but said some villages have no electric-

ity, although residents have had solar systems temporarily installed. “There are nine wards that have no electricity in Matatiele. The municipality has worked with Eskom to electrify 400 houses in Harry Gwala Park Extention and other rural villages. “We built 300 houses at Caba-Mdeni village, 500 in Mvenyane, 898 in Mehloaneng and 700 houses were built for destitute people. “Through the provincial Department of Human Settlements we have built houses in Nyaniso, Chibini, Phifane, Mahereng and other villages.” He said the expanded public works programe has created many job opportunities for young people and women. “The municipality has assisted projects that are owned by women. “The Kuyasa poultry project in Ward 20 has received funds from the municipality.” Mbedla mentioned that poverty is going to be the thing of the past through the intervention of the social development department and special programes unit. He said R12 million has helped 75 projects through poverty alleviation programmes.

Split over ruling party candidates >> Unhappy ANC branch members to stand as independant candidates SIPHELELE NKETO Siphelele@media24.com

I

NSTEAD of staying with the ruling party or joining opposition parties, six unhappy branch members in Kokstad have decided to stand as independent candidates in the upcoming local government elections. There are two more branch members - in Ward 6 in Pakkies and Ward 8 in Zibeleni Township - who are also standing as independent candidates. Chairperson of the dissatisfied Kokstad branches, Sihle Mbabala, accused ruling party leaders of killing the ANC by not resolving candidates’ problems. He said moving away from the ANC was not an easy decision, but pressure within the party forced them to do so. Recently Mbabala and Mziwamadoda Sogayise, both ANC members, led a march of more than 1 000 community members to deliver a memorandum to the Greater Kokstad Municipality. The march turned violent where shops were vandalised and looted. More than 50 people were arrested for public violence and malicious damage to property. Mbabala and Sogayise blamed the ruling party for not attending to complaints within the unhappy branches

about the election of ward candidates during branch general meetings. “We sent complaints to Harry Gwala regional leadership and the province, but no one attended to us. Our main complaint was that the election of candidates were done illegally, and without the interest of branch members. Regional leaders imposed on members who to elect during branch general meeting. “We even spent our money on travel from Kokstad to provincial offices to pose our complaints,” said Mbabala who confirmed he is going to stand as an independent candidate at Shayamoya. Pakkies community members in Ward 8 recently threatened to close schools and roads if their ward councillor, Tshibi Mhlakoana’s name didn’t appear on the list of candidates. Mbabala confirmed to Fever that the Pakkies community indicated to him that they are going to support independent candidates because the ruling party has failed them. He said joining opposition parties will not help them as political parties are led by hungry people who don’t care about other people. Kokstad opposition party members - United Democratic Movement, Congress of the People and Azapo have guaranteed to vote for inde-

pendent candidates to fight ANC, this according to Mbabala. “ANC is not the same compared to the period when it was led by Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, Walter Sisulu and other leaders. Today ANC does not serve the purpose of Mandela, people are feeding their stomachs,” said Sogayise. He blames the ANC general secretary, Gwede Mantatsh,e for not fixing the split in the party. “I asked Mantashe to come and solve the problems that have escalated after branch general meetings in Kokstad. He said people can’t march for branch general meeting outcomes.” Regional Harry Gwala ANC chairperson, Zamo Nxumalo, said the party is worried about ANC members who have left the party to stand as independent candidates. He said the ANC is not going to be defeated by people who were born before the ANC. “The ANC has 104 years behind it, so it is not going to lose. “Independent candidates have confirmed to Fever that registration processing with the Independent Electoral Commission is complete. Legal fees have been paid and by next week the faces of contestants will be plugged so that people will know us. We are not scared of the ruling party,” said Mbabala.

Clinic flooded with dirty water Old lady killed for money gether when the suspects demanded money. No arrests have been made and police appeal to anyone to come forward with information. Recently Fever published a story about Maduduma Pakkies (77), who was strangled to death and her body put into a trunk. An 18-year-old youth of Shenxa village in Matatiele was arrested on Friday by Afsondering police for allegedly killing Pakkies. Motloung said the youth appeared in Maluti Magistrate’s Court on Friday, but the case was postponed for bail application. - Supplied.

SIPHELELE NKETO Siphelele@media24.com THE municipal workers strike has badly affected a public Matatiele clinic, the grounds of which became flooded

with dirty water and sewage. South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) members in Alfred Nzo District municipality have been on an unprotected strike since last month according to the municipal spokesman Lubabalo Majenge. Majenge said services like water and sanitation have been severely affected by the strike. Clinic staff and patients were shocked to see smelly water in and around buildings on Monday. They put bricks in the water to walk on, others wore gumboots to get inside the clinic. The general manager of health programmes for the De-

partment of Health in Alfred Nzo, Lizo Ngxata said the problem will be attended to. “I spoke to municipal officials about fixing the problem so that peopple can get quality service. Operations are normal at the clinic.” The district municipality apologised for the inconvenience caused as a result of the action. “The municipality is doing its best to get workers to return to work and to bring the situation back to normal. Service providers are on standby to assist hospitals and clinics with water services. “The problem at the clinic is going to be attended to,” said Majenge.

TWO unknown suspects demanded money from an 84-year-old woman of Gobizizwe village in Matatiele last Friday. The woman and a 60-year-old friend were returning home from a tavern at around 11pm. When the woman said she had no money, the suspects shot and killed her. “The 84-year-old woman was killed and the 60-year-old man was injured, and transferred to hospital,” said SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Raphael Motloung. Allegedly the suspects also killed two men and critically injured another two at Mengini village on the same night. The victims were drinking to-

ENERAL ANC secretary Gwede Mantashe has called for unity and peace among the party members ahead of local government elections. Mantashe met with more than 500 branch members at Ward 25 in Rawuwe village outside Matatiele last Friday. Members requested Mantashe to restore harmony in the branch and

blame regional leaders and councillors for causing division. Mahlomowa Mzinyathi said: “We are divided in this ward. Provincial and other national members have tried to unite the area, but there is no change. We don’t greet each other as members of the same party.” Other branch members told Mantashe that some members have low interest in the party because councillors undermine people. Mantashe said members should focus on campaigns for the upcoming lo-

cal government elections. He admitted that the election of ward candidates has caused cracks in the party. “I am here to bring peace, not to take sides. The unhappy members about elected candidates must accept the results and campaign for the party to win elections. If your candidate is not elected, you must accept and support the appointed one. Let us be a family, not enemies.” He distanced himself from accusations made by some party members that he interfered during the election of ward candidates. He said the selection process of candidates has nothing to do with him and he can’t doing anything about who should be elected in wards. “I have big power in the party even in government. I am also responsible to protect the party. If President Jacob Zuma has sinned my duty is to make sure he is protected. People talk about Nkandla and the president. I have never visited Nkandla, but my duty is to tell the public that the president has apologised.” He called on branch executive leadership to meet and organise door-todoor campaigns. On Saturday he met with Cedarville branch members in a community hall. They voiced their dissatisfaction about election candidates two months ago. A large number of community members in the area vow to support South African Communist Party in the local government elections.

RAMADAN is the month of love, mercy and blessings and is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad according to Islamic belief. Islam is a religion of peace and is the fastest growing religion in the world. In the United States more than seven percent of the population are Muslim. People such as Muhammad Ali and Malcom X embraced Islam. In Kokstad the Dawah Centre, whose director is poet Sheik Phiri, hands out clothing to the needy during this month. Currently, there are stories about terrorism in South Africa, which has come from U.S. media sources, however, these rumours are not true because Muslims are communitybased. Organisations such as Gift of the Givers in Pietermaritzburg work with the government to alleviate poverty, among other community issues it is involved with. amaHlubi nation contests kingship SIPHELELE NKETO Siphelele@media24.com THE amaHlubi nation is to contest in court its “kingship” to be recognised like other kings in the country after it was disbanded by Nhlapho Commission years ago. The commission was appointed by former president Thabo Mbeki to resolve disputes on chieftaincy and after recommendations of legitimate kingships in the country amaHlubi lost their status. Last Saturday amaHlubi king Langalibalele Radebe II was in Kokstad to prepare for the Supreme Court of Appeal battle next month. Chiefs across the country belonging to the nation attended the meeting to seek a way forward before the

25 July court date. In his speech Radebe called for unity among the chiefs to win this battle. He said amaHlubi are to be found in KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape, Western Cape and Khayakhulu village in North West. The amaHlubi national working committee co-ordinator, Chief Jobe Radebe said amaHlubi chiefs are oppressed in the country. “AmaHlubis are not progressing in terms of developing their areas. “Our children and chiefs should know their king. In this country no one counts us when kings are mentioned.” A portion of land in some parts of South Africa is under claim by the nation. The nation also called for

the Hlubi language to be added to the 11 official languages. Sonwabo Dingazwe, who is fasttracking the process of Hlubi language, said he and other Hlubis established a NPO in 2012 working with linguistic university professors. “We are visiting areas where people speaks isiHlubi and do sound recordings for university professors. “We are in the process of getting a license from Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) for the isiHlubi community radio station.” Other chiefs at the meeting said PHOTO: SIPHELELE NKETO they hope the court rules in their Escorted by traditional leaders and chiefs (front left), King Langalibalele favour so they can plan traditional Radebe II. celebrations for the GREATER amaHlubi.  MUNICIPALITY

GKM VIEWPOINT

GREETINGS to the people of Kokstad. Mayoral Games in progress Wednesday was the official start of the Mayoral Games at Riverview Stadium, will run until 16 June. The sporting codes are soccer, netball, volleyball and basketball. To make these games competitive and attract maximum participation, we have introduced a number of prizes

to be won. I urge the people of Kokstad to come out in numbers to participate and support these young athletes when they display their talent. Youth Day celebration As the municipality we know that a society, which does not cater for its youth, is doomed to fail. To ensure that our young men and women are empowered we have put in place infrastructure that will enable them to take a leading role in their development. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of 16 June we will officially open the Bhongweni Youth Centre, the town hall and Extension 7 hall. These facilities will assist young people when developing various aspects of their lives. The safety and well-being of these facilities are in your hands. Sad loss of Urban de Kok It is with profound sadness that we inform you about the death of our former colleague, Urban de Kok. He was part of GKM team for many years before resigning to pursue a career in

sport. He worked as the coach of various soccer teams including Maritzburg United. May his soul find eternal peace and his family and friends find strength and fortitude to bear such a tragedy. De Kok may be gone but his ideas will live on to inspire generations to come. He will be buried on 11 June in Kokstad. The service will be held at Kokstad Catholic Church and it will start at 10am. Electricity theft Electricity theft is costing Kokstad thousands of rands per year. Residents are urged to prevent and not to participate in any form of activity related to electricity theft. Electricity theft causes the overload of the network which finally leads to power cuts (load shedding). Illegal connections and exposed wires can cause serious injuries and even death. Any resident who participates in any form of electricity theft will face harsh punishment as per the newly adopted municipal by-laws.

Young people, take charge

As a municipality, through stakeholder engagements, we realised that our communities experience challenges about profiling and popularising tourism interest in our villages. We know that the elevation of strategic tourism corners have economic spin-offs for the community, so we embarked on a LED and Tourism Awareness Campaign throughout all villages of Umzimkhulu to ensure that communities embrace their touristic spots. Environmental Affairs Awareness Campaign We have further educated our communities about the importance of being environmental friendly and conscious about the environment, and have partnered with Harry Gwala District Environmental Affairs office for an event to be held at MaWusheni Village. use these opportunities will lead us being labelled as the wrong people who were given the keys. For us to reach our full potential we need to grab the bull by the horns and en sure that youth development becomes the business of everyone in government, business, society and communities. Our achievements should be meas ured by our level of skills development and socioeconomic empowerment. They should not be measured by the level of crime, HIV/Aids, drugs and substance abuse. The Freedom Charter declares: “The doors of learning shall be open and educa tion accessible.” Therefore we need to make an effort to learn because it is through learning that we can claim our rightful place in society as skilled, pros perous and proud people. Our freedom will be meaningless if we avoid opportunities presented to us. Let us dedicate our efforts to give impetus to a struggle that is about to go silent. Zolani Siqwayi, Kokstad

The women’s handover day was held to encourage the women of Kwa Sani to stand up and take charge of their future. They were also told that employment creation cannot be left in the hands of government, rather we can also be creators of jobs and fight poverty. A woman by the name of Toffee Molefe from Ridge asked Kwa Sani Municipality to help her with fencing material because she had started a farming business in Ridge, Ward 1. The handover was done by mayor Cllr M.B. Banda, who said “women can play a pivotal role in moving this country forward and if you teach a woman you educate a nation”. The aim of this handover was to show our support for our community and to prove to other women that they can do things for themselves and not

to depend on men. It also demonstrates that government is working for the people, and Kwa Sani Municipality is a leader in development. Social development, the Department of Health, the Consumer and Liquor Authority, Khuphuka NGO attended the event. These stakeholders played an important role on the day, especially the Department of Health, which hosted a presentation by a dietician. Community members were participants on the day, and as Kwa Sani Municipality we will continue to be a beacon of hope for our people and ensure their development. On 3 June we hosted a small-business workshop, the aim of which was to introduce new developments in terms of registering businesses, etc., and teach our business people how to improve ways in which they can maximise every opportunity. Until we meet again, stay blessed.
