A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season. As we get ready to wind down and take a breath er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was. Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all. The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you. We’ve had an actionpacked year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns. Dear Readers, TODAY marks the end of another year for the Hillcrest Fever, and as the festivities kick off for this season, let us reflect on moments that touched our lives and the community this past year. 2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.). We had weather catastrophes and crime
continues to destroy some of our communities. However, the one thing that continues to stand undefeated is the spirit of the Upper Highway community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed. We have weathered all the storms that came our way and have demonstrated that we can be a community to be proud of - from our disabled horse rider achieving his goals to a local woman beating breast cancer and becoming an inspiration to others - our community stands together proud! We are confident that 2015 will be better than ever. We, at The Hillcrest Fever, have faced our

ISGRUNTLED community Ward 26 members in Cedarville burnt tyres in support of their ward councillor Siyabonga Mavuka as a candidate for the upcoming local government elections. The R56 road between Matatiele and Kokstad was also closed with burning tyres, and rocks were put on the road. Schools and shops were closed when the protest erupted in the early hours of Tuesday. The frustrations of community members started after a meeting collapsed at Mount Ayliff that was called by the ruling party to deal with community complaints who say the name of the councillor they elected does not appear on the list of councillors. Cedarville communities began the fight with the ruling party in November at a branch general meeting in town hall to elect councillors. Apparently the meeting did not continue after the community became angry when they heard that the names of the people elected were not the ones they chose. On Monday the ruling party appeals committee called community members together to listen to

their complaints. “Members of the appeals committee didn’t listen to us, instead they told us that our ward candidate is Thabiso Mohoto, who was not elected by communities. We want Mavuka to serve the next term. “Mavuka has changed our lives since he started as our ward councillor in 2011,” said Aphendulwa Klaas, a community member. Nondabula Sophie (57), one of the community said that Mavuka has had roads fixed for them. “We are going to fight for Mavuka to become our councillor.” Another villager said that Mavuka is also fighting for the area to get a clinic, electricity for other areas and water. Ruling party spokesperson in the Alfred Nzo District, Onke Diko, denied that names of candidates have been completed and asked the community not to be used by people who want to score on their political agendas. “There are no ward candidates at this stage. People were given the right to elect four names as candidates. A conference is to sit this weekend to select two from the four people elected by the people. The provincial conference is going to come up with a final name, who will go as a candidate. The ruling party is going to make sure that people vote for their favourite councillors.” Diko added that the leadership of the ruling party in Alfred Nzo District is to visit Cedarville community members to listen to their complaints and calm them. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Raphael Motloung said police will monitor Cedarville. No one has been arrested in connection with the protest.

South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy. It’s been a year since his death and many ques tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’. Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some times comes to the fore. SAPS warn people about remote jamming KOKSTAD police warn car owners to be vigilant when locking their car in the Kokstad CBD because many cases of remote jamming have been reported at the police station. SAPS spokesman Lieutenant Dumisani Ncongo said the perpetrators use remotes to open motor vehicles. “This kind of crime has increased in the CBD, which is worrying. The perpetrators are young and
walk around cars with remotes. “They act like innocent people, but as soon as drivers get out of their vehicle the perpetrators press their remote so that the car won’t be locked when the driver presses their remote.” Ncongo appeals to motorists to double check that their vehicle is locked after they press their remote. He said some of the hot spots include Nandos, next to FNB in the main street, Wimpy at Engen garage, Hope Street next to Checkout
and Chicken Licken. Police also warn people about ATM scams in the Koksad CBD. “Suspicious people at ATMs always want to assist people at the ATM and they quickly rob people or steal bank cards and withdraw money at another ATM. People must be careful, especially on pay days.” To fight crime people are advised to call Kokstad police on 039 797 1123 or 10111 immediately. - Supplied.

He went around the area asking people if they knew anything about the goats. “After 20 minutes I received a call from one the Marikana locals who they found the thieves with goat skins. I saw heads and the legs of my two goats. Another one was suffering from wounds to the head and stomach and I had to slaughter it because it was in so much pain. The fourth goat has not been found,” said Pakkies. Two youths were arrested by community members, the third one is still at large. The youths, aged 26 and 30, appeared in court on Tuesday on charges of stock theft. Their case was remanded until Tuesday 26 April and they remain in custody. AMANI Mbongwe (43) is pointing a finger at the Harry Gwala Municipality for not closing an open sewerage pipe next to his yard at Shayamoya in Kokstad where he has been living for four years. He told Fever that a contractor had worked on the pipe last year, but didn’t bother to close it when he left. “When the pipe gets blocked it bursts right near my door causing a terrible smell. My life is hell. I can’t eat properly and I have to keep my doors and windows closed all the time. “I have complained to the municipality many times, but instead of helping me officials tell me to fill in a com-
plaint form. They also promised to come and see for themselves, but no one has ever come. “Last week I decided not to fill in the form.” Mbongwe said he can’t use the outside tap because of the sewage. His neighbour, Noxolo Dumisa (39), has a one-year-old child and they are also affected. “I was shocked to see that the pipe has not been closed by the municipality. My child and other children in the township play next to the uncovered pipe and one day I had to rescue my child from there. “I don’t know if the municipality would fix the problem should we lose one of our children. This area is not healthy for us.”
Harry Gwala Municipality spokesperson Ndabezitha Tenza told Fever there are many issues that are contributing to the blocking of sewage pipes. He said some of the causes include negligence by the community who throw objects in the sewer lines in certain areas of Kokstad. “The municipality has an ongoing campaign which aims to sensitise people about dangers of throwing objects into pipe lines. “With regard to the Mbongwe and Dumisa problem, the municipality is going to send staff to attend to the problem. “We appeal to the people of Kokstad to report these things to our offices in Kokstad.”

AY has been declared Africa Month and will be launched in Kokstad by the minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa at the Ovary grounds next Friday. The theme - We are Africa, There shall be Peace and Friendship - promotes African unity and regional integration. The theme is a declaration and celebratory statement of pride, which fosters inclusively, a call to action for individuals and groups from all backgrounds and walks of life to join the movement for change towards a peaceful and African continent. The programme will entail a keynote address by Mthethwa, the signing of the anti-racism pledge, panel discussions and a diverse cultural programme. Africa Month celebrates the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on 25 May,

Africa Month also acknowledges the progress that Africans have made on the continent to address collectively the challenges they face, such as armed conflict, climate change and poverty. In 2016 Africa Month focuses on women and youth development initiatives, marking the 60th year of the women’s march and the 40th anniversary of the youth uprisings in Soweto. Furthermore, the contribution, solidarity and sacrifices by various African states will be highlighted in a number of colloquia and seminars to be held at venues across the country.
The Department of Arts and Culture, media liaison manager, Teresa Magidela said that during Africa Month countries are encouraged to celebrate, among others, their traditions, beliefs and culture through creative expression such as music and performances, heritage, architecture, language, food and practices. not disappointed about the non-availability of Melvyn David, who was also expected to entertain, but due to family issues was unable to. Kok told Fever that inviting comedians to Kokstad was to bring joy to everyone, young and old, and encourage families to spend time together. “We want families to have fun without the need for alcohol or vulgar language.” Payne is not only a comedian, he is a motivator, actor, singer, instrumentalist and public speaker. He has performed with Eugene Khoza, Nick Ribnovitz, Trevor Noah and others at the Suncoast Casino and Sibaya. Stofels has been on stage with comedians Dusty Rich, Niel Green, Masod Boomgaard and many others. MAKHOSONKE Dlungula’s dream of training young boys in sport is going to die if he doesn’t get support. The 43-year-old Dlungula, known as “Rasta” said he has trained many soccer players, who are now playing in the Vodacom league. “I started training young boys in Kokstad in 1998. I have produced soccer players who now play for Kokstad Liverpool.”
The unemployed Rasta is plastering buildings at Ebongweni Township as a form of income and after he gets paid he buys soccer kits and balls for more than 100 young boys. “My boys also excel in school tournaments through my training. I always tell them to enjoy sport and to have role models,” said Rasta. Rasta is now training U13, U15 and U17 boys from the surrounding areas at the Riverview Stadium. We would like to congratulate and thank Kokstad Junior School for hosting such a tangible festival for our pupils. Well done to our U13 teams for a good performance on the day and we thank the Lord our heavenly Father because, “with God we can”. - Supplied.

ATATIELE’S Edward High was crowned the Southern KZN Regional champion for the second year in the Spar KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge which took place at St Patrick’s College on Saturday. The defending champs met two times regional winners, Creston College in the finals, winning the game 1-0. Scoring the winning shot, Zhanique Sissing was dutifully standing on the post during a rare short corner in the final, and nudged the ball across the line from a shot from Thatho Ntoba. “It was an amazing tournament with a wonderful spirit,” said an elated Jocelyn Duminy, King Edward’s captain. “Before the tournament we said that we would keep going no matter what, we just persisted and kept on trying especially in the finals, even though we were a bit stressed at the start of the game. We are delighted with our efforts and can’t wait until the finals in July.” Coached by Deidre Duminy, King Edward shone as a team, working cohesively together and sticking to the game plan set about for them by the enthusiastic coach. In the second semi-final, King Edward took on Southcity and with a clinical display, took the game 3-0. Proving a handful for the oppo-
sition, King Edward’s Sissing showed phenomenal skill with her constant commanding breaks down the right hand touchline, driving the game into
the oppositions circle and creating a number of opportunities. Earning herself the award of Most Promising Umpire, Kokstad’s Col-
lege’s Sharnelle Beeton was recognised for her outstanding umpiring during the course of the tournament. Beeton has been invited to further her skills at the grand finals in July. “It was a really good day of hockey for all the teams, and a fabulous festive atmosphere,” said Les Galloway, tournament director. “Congratulations to King Edward who managed to hold onto the title this year with some truly fine team work and tactical playing, they deserved to retain their title.” Rob Philipson managing director of
Spar KZN thanked St Patrick’s College for hosting the well-organised tournament. “It was super to see ten motivated teams, really putting their all into their games and showing wonderful camaraderie among themselves and between teams. Thanks must also go to the parents and supporters who took time out to encourage from the sidelines.” King Edward High School is the seventh team to secure their position at the grand finals held at St Mary’s in July,” said Philipson. - Supplied.
