Maskandi artist releases new album >> Artist aims to heal, teach and fight socials ills using music

ASKANDI artist Mthandeni Sibusiso Manqele, known as Igcokama Elisha released his new 16-track album, Amagolide, last week and will be touring KZN, Gauteng and other provinces to promote it. Elisha worked with maskandi artist, Jaiva Zimnike, on the album, which is his sixth studio album since he began his solo career in 2013. “My albums since 2014 have been selling over gold status, which is very impressive especially since I am an independent artist signed to my own record label, Igcokama Records. “This album will also be well received by many, including those from our neighbouring countries, the same way they enjoyed my Xenophobia album.” “Xenophobia was recorded to help stop the 2015 xenophobic attacks in Durban and parts of South Africa. The song preached the message of peace and unity and King Goodwill Zweli-

thini gave it his blessings as well.” The 28-year-old KwaZulu-Natal-born and bred hit-maker from Mtubatuba, promises that the album does not focus on fights within the maskandi industry, rather it looks into growing his career as an artist, songwriter, delivering the best music to maskandi music lovers and contributing to the growth of this genre. “I’m an entertainer, I believe that I was born to heal, teach and fight social ills with my music and it’s exactly what I’m doing. “In this

new album I continue to bring innovation in the genre that speaks to the new generation with a sound that is inspired by what the youth in South Africa like. Young people, especially hip-hop music lovers will enjoy this al-

bum.” Igcokama Elisha said he is already rehearsing his new stage performance to go with this new album. “I promise my fans and promoters a hot, entertaining performance.” For more information, contact Vusi Leeuw on 084 824 0848 or emailvusileeu w@gmail.co m - Supplied.

>> Thrilling production comes to Durban

D

IRECTOR and playwright Duma Ndlovu’s celebrated play, The Game, has been included in The Playhouse Company’s festive season programme, and runs at the Playhouse Loft Theatre from 15 to 24 December. Some of the top SA actors to star in the production include Sindi Dlathu, Dawn King, Nqobile Ndlovu, Nomasonto Dlamini, Sheila Khumalo, Buhle Samuels, Lungile Mkhize and Vuyiseka Cawe. The Game is set in a fictitious women’s prison in Middelburg just before South Africa’s first democratic elections. The prisoners are told that one of them will be released to mark the occasion. The catch is that the prisoners must decide who is to be released. This sets the cat among the pigeons and what follows is a gritty telling of each prisoner’s personal story. Ndlovu is a Soweto-born director, producer, journalist and playwright well known for Bergville Stories, The Game, The Ritual and The Journey. He is the creator of Muvhango and Uzalo, two of SA television’s most popular television series. Award-winning actress and singer Dlathu is best known for her television roles as Nomfundo in Soul City and Thandaza in Muvhango.

She began her professional life understudying the lead role in Sarafina at the age of 14, and has performed with Billy Ocean, Randy Crawford and Abigail Kubheka. Durban-born King is best known for her starring role as Lindiwe Xulu, the wife of self-made gangster Muzi Xulu, in the SABC1 telenovela Uzalo. Khumalo is also a Durban actress, singer, playwright and songwriter who has worked in the entertainment industry since the early 1970s, working with the likes of Steve Kekana, Sophie Mgcina and Joyce Thabe. Mkhize is best known for her role in the soapie Uzalo. Cawe is popular for her roles in The Gift, Rhythm City and Rockville. Dlamini comes from Newcastle, and has been seen at the Playhouse in K-Cap’s Zion, the Grahamstown Arts Festival and at the Johannesburg Market Theatre. Samuels is a South African television personality and actress, best known for her portrayal of the villainous Matshidiso Mofokeng in Muvhango. - Supplied.

NOSIPHO MKHIZE nosipho.mkhize@media24.com ETHEKWINI Echo spoke to Karen Smith about the history behind the Offshore Sailing Academy. EE: When was the Offshore Sailing Academy established? KS: Offshore Sailing Academy was established in 1979 by Chris and Libby Bonnet with a table, chair and banner at an expo at the old Durban terminal, and things grew from there. PF: What does the academy do and what does it offer? KS: The academy has been teaching people to sail for over 35 years. We offer a range of courses to allow newcomers to experience sailing for the first time, gain confidence on the water, and ultimately achieve their SAS Day Skipper ticket. This allows

the person to skipper a recreational vessel, sail and power, inland and offshore, between sunrise and sunset. We also train active sailors to build knowledge and experience and advance to their next sailing qualification. EE: What is sailing all about? KS: Sailing is the ultimate adrenalin rush. With the sun on your face, the wind in your hair and skimming over the water on the deck of a beautiful sail boat, you are relaxed, at peace and having fun! EE: What requirements are needed to enroll at the academy PF: Anyone can sail. As long as you can swim and learn, you can master the basics of sailing. Sailing is also a lifelong hobby with youngsters starting at the age of five, through to 80, competing in yacht racing in international waters … a lifelong passion when the bug bites.

DDING to the festivities of the magnificent milestone in its 125th anniversary year, the Point Yacht Club is delighted to announce the return of the Mauritius to Durban race. This will be the seventh edition of the challenging race that is due to start in Mauritius on Saturday 17 June, 2017. The last time this trade wind race was held was in 2005 where Cape Town’s Warrior took both the line and handicap honours. The first time the 1 690 nautical mile event was held was in 1985 and 32 years later, the race returns. I plan to be the first boat to enter.” Organiser for the event, Richard Crockett said: “It is a nice trade wind race where the guys can get in some good fast sailing. It is tactically a tough race where the navigators will have a big role to play. The three big challenges of the crossing will show the knowledge and mettle of the guys

guiding them home. “The first key is how far will they leave Reunion Island to starboard and get away from the island’s wind shadow. The next is rounding the southern tip of Madagascar. And the third big one is the notorious Agulhas current. “We have had some keen interest; both locally and internationally encouraging us to resurrect the race and leading up to the announcement a couple of boats from Mauritius and Reunion have said they would love to participate. “If we get a fleet of 15 boats, I think we can be proud. It is an auspicious year for the club, and I think this is a completely fitting way to celebrate. If there are insufficient entries by 15 February, the event will be rolled over to the same time the following year in 2018,” said Crockett. No stranger to hard-core sailing, Millar, who was the skipper of the 2005 Durban entry in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race said: “We have a number of significant events planned in our big year and I think this long haul race rounds off the festivities nicely. Being a yacht club, it makes sense to have a significant yacht race to include in the diary. June is a fantastic month to do the passage and it is just after the other blue water race we are organising, the Vasco da Gama in April. So let’s go sailing.” In their 125th anniversary year, the Point Yacht Club announces the return of the Mauritius to Durban race that will take place in June 2017. hannesburg EE: Tell me a bit about your family. RH: I’m an only child raised by my mother, with the help of my fashionable grandmother. I’m one of 15 grandchildren. I come from a very complex family, who love church and food. EE: What drove you to becoming a designer? RH: My peculiar and meticulous eye for fashion and mainly because some fashion styles are not available to everyone and are not made for every size. I have a passion for looking good, because looking good makes me feel good. EE: Tell me about Rebel of Zion. RH: Rebel of Zion is a brand formed by a group of young individuals with the same passion for style that is fashionable, trendy and classy. We produce limited lines, suitable for everyday use and exclusivity. For years, we have been a male fashion brand. We saw the opportunity to grow our brand by adding a female member, which is where I come in to launch a first Roz female line of clothing. Our brand caters for the working class, from the age of 25 up and focuses on casual and formal wear. Whatever your needs are, we cater for them. EE: Who inspires you? RH: Kanye West. EE: Describe yourself in one word. RH: Rebel. EE: What message do you have for youth? RH: Stay in school and stay true to who you are. Never do things to impress others because not everyone values you as you may think. Never give up your dream and never ever try taking short cuts to get to your dream.
