MudenGreytown road blockaded

Stolen cable and cable reels from a nearby construction camp were used as block the road.

Youngsters stroll away from this dangerous blockage on a corner.

A GROUP of unruly youngsters is said to be behind the blockage of the Muden-Greytown road from Thursday midday until Sunday, causing considerable problems to the increased number of vehicles travelling through for the Easter weekend. Muden SAPS, Greytown SAPS, Umvoti Municipality and RTI were

road. Road signs were dug out and used as part of the barricade. On Friday morning an Umvoti Municipality ITB cleared the road and the cable was untied, but by Friday night the barricades were back, including concrete pipes and steel structures. Some residents reported hearing

called in throughout the weekend to clear rocks, cables, trees, etc. A SAPS spokesman said no one had claimed responsibility or requested a meeting to discuss any problems. It was thought that a gang of youngsters were behind the blockade – some residents said however, it could have been in pro-

test against electricity not being switched on in some areas. Muden Police cleared the rocks on Thursday afternoon, but these were once again back in the evening in the vicinity of Muden clinic and Mbalane turn-off. The gang also raided a construction camp, stole reels of cable, which were used to barricade the

IEC warns, no address, no vote A WARNING has been issued by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) that voters could be excluded from the voter's roll if they fail to provide a full home address. This is a result of the recent judgment by the Electoral Court that for voting to be free and fair, voters need to have addresses and registration details.

The IEC, however, is looking into an appeal to the Constitutional Court to challenge this ruling which led to three by-elections being postponed this month. This issue was first raised by unsuccessful independent candidates in a by election in North West who challenged the results expressing concern that voters were being

brought in from other voting districts. Another voting registration weekend is to take place on the 9 and 10 April - the last opportunity to register and to check details before the voters roll closes. The current local government term expires on 18 May - the new elections have to be held not later than August.

shots on Thursday night and there were reports of vehicles being stoned. With tensions building on the political front with the upcoming local government elections it is hoped that action is taken by the authorities to find and penalise those responsible for the Easter weekend blockades.

A big thank you A BIG thank you to all the Greytown Gazette advertisers on meeting the ridiculously early deadline for this issue – you co-operation is really much appreciated. Its back to normal deadlines … for a few weeks until Freedom Day on Wednesday 27 April and Worker’s Day on Monday 2 May.

Project Thirst comes to Greytown and Kranskop

Greytown residents were delighted to receive water through Shoprite Checkers Project Thirst, food buckets from Tiger Brand and hygiene products from Gift of the Givers at Greytown Primary School last Tuesday.

Although for some of the the fivelitre bottles of water were almost too heavy to handle the little ones were determined to take a bottle home from Shoprite Checkers Project Thirst at Greytown Primary School. THOUSANDS of litres of water were donated to schools and communities in Greytown and Kranskop by Shoprite Checkers on World Water Day, 22 March as part of the group's Project Thirst. Gift of the Givers handed over hygiene products and Tiger Brand 2 200

food buckets to hundreds of appreciative community members young and old. Project Thirst was launched at the beginning of February by the KZN head office and since its inception has donated and delivered more than 222 536 litres of water

to the drought-stricken communities of Harding, Nongoma, Ixopo, Vryheid, Uthungulu and Ndwedwe. As part of National Water Week, 17-23 March, the Shoprite Group encourages customers to assist with drought-relief efforts through its #ActForChange Disaster Relief Fund. Since the beginning of March, consumers across South Africa have been able to make donations at any Shoprite or Checkers supermarket by adding increments of R5 to their purchases. The #ActForChange Disaster Relief Fund will initially be used to bring relief to communities affected by water shortages. The Shoprite Group has in recent weeks donated and transported more than 400 000 litres of water to various towns in the Free State, North West and KwaZuluNatal.

There was lots of excitement at Kranskop Primary School last week as community members benefitted from Shoprite Checkers Project Thirst as well as food parcels from Tiger Brand and hygiene parcels from Gift of the Givers.

Kranskop Primary pupils were only too happy to have their hands full with the donations handed out at Project Thirst.

Fall of a GIANT This magnificent old tree toppled over gracefully on Human Rights Day making sure no one was in the way and that it landed on the road and pavement rather than the other way around onto houses. Cooper Street residents said they were aware that something had happened but there was no loud bang. Rashnee Dheorajh, who lives close to where the tree grew, says she phoned 911 at 2.10pm to report it and was impressed that within 20 minutes Umvoti Municipality personnel were on the scene to clear the road.

Alert EMRS at two accidents TWO accidents were reported last week by Alert EMS personnel who attended, together with Kranskop police. On the afternoon of 17 March in the Wozi area, a water truck, travelling down the hill on the P15, landed on its side when the brakes failed and the driver lost control. The driver was entrapped and was extracted by Alert EMS in a serious condition while the passenger sustained minor

There was great excitement at Sisekelo High School at the end of the term when headmaster, Mr O.N. Khanyile, announced the Department of Education had approved that the school, previously known as Kranskop Secondary had been renamed Sisekelo High School. Pupils celebrated the new name and the end of term at an enjoyable braai.

Anti frackers … a must see film in Greytown fracking, the film is a visual back-up to their views. To anyone still not convinced, the film is an absolutely essential to actually see the negative impacts of fracking on the environment and life. Award-winning director Jeffrey Barbee will be present and will answer any questions. Apart from filming, his freelance work has been published in leading media throughout the world. Producer Mira Dutschke is an award-winning film producer working on social and environmental filmmaking, investigating how human rights can inform environmental laws and policies, and using the media as an advocacy tool. A reminder to all interested that the deadline for comment on the scoping report on environmental authorisation produced by Rhino Gas and Oil and SLR Consultants is 11 April. All libraries in the area have a copy of the report which can also be downloaded on ftp:slrconsulting.co.za Communication is vital for survival. Obviously the different governmental departments do not talk to each other. There are several times a day appeals on and in the media by members of the national and provincial cabinets to save every drop of water and how precious it is in view of the critical drought situation in many parts of the country. On the other hand the government is being asked to approved fracking - in fact, it has granted licences for a process that will not only use hundreds of thousands litres of water per hole drilled, but will also pollute existing ground water. The bottom line - which is more essential - the claims that water is life or the claims that cheap gas processing will miraculously be the answer to the country's energy future and unemployment?

THE international award-winning film, The High Cost of Cheap Gas is to be shown in Greytown on Tuesday 12 April at 2.30pm in the Greytown Town Hall and is an absolute must for the many who have already shown that the only response to fracking is a total “no”. This project uncovers how the oil and gas industry is quietly invading one of the most pristine places on the planet. Reserves and national wildlife parks are not safe from these developments, which threaten the existence of Africa's last remaining traditional people and wildlife. In this film the voices of the scientists, experts and people are heard opposing the unabated oil and gas development in the U.S. to ensure it does not come to southern Africa so that the region's natural wealth may be protected for generations to come by the best scientific data available. Deep in the Kalahari Desert the production team filmed secret hydraulic fracturing (fracking) operations across the migration routes of Africa's largest single elephant population - 44 000 elephants pass between Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe and Chobe National Park in Botswana. The migration route is a tenuous and delicate string of sweet-water pans in the dry desert. There is evidence and undercover interviews of newly fracked gas wells already endangering these ancient elephant routes. The Karoo Shale Basin extends across the Karoo desert in South Africa - a delicate ecosystem home to myriad endemic and endangered plant species. While exploration has started in Botswana, South Africa still has a narrow window of opportunity to prevent potentially serious harm to its environment. For those already against

injuries. On the following day, 18 March, in the morning, a bakkie with three people in it, crashed into the back of a moving truck on the R74 towards Kranskop. The impact of the crash entrapped one of the passengers from his knees down and Alert EMS, EMRS and Greytown Fire Department extracted him. Two were taken to Greytown Hospital.

Hermannsburg Little Oaks’ Oracle DID you know that the Easter bunny (der Osterhase) originated in Germany? According to legend, the Easter bunny, also called the “Easter hare” or “spring bunny”, brought baskets filled with coloured eggs, chocolate and sweets to the homes of children on Easter Sunday. There he either put the baskets in a designated place or hid them somewhere in the house or garden for the children to find. Another German tradition is to paint chicken eggs after blowing out the contents

into a bowl through pinholes at either end of the egg. The beautifully decorated hollow eggs are then hung from shrubs and trees in the garden during the Easter period. The Little Oaks had their traditional Easter egg hunt before the start of the Easter holidays, with Easter baskets they had made themselves. They had loads of fun finding the Easter eggs hidden in our school grounds. Happy Easter to you all, may you find renewed hope, health, love and the spirit of God.

Hermannsburg Happenings TOWARDS the end of the first term, a number of our pupils participated in various academic olympiads. We await the results of the annual English Olympiad, but can report that 11 of our pupils are through to the second round of the Zulu Olympiad, with Nongcebo Mene (92%), Sinqobile Mbambo (92%) and Nondumiso Dlamini (90%) being our top achievers in the first round. Hugh Bouwer (85%) and Michelle van Rooyen (83%) participated in the German Olympiad, with Hugh being given the opportunity (along with 10 others from South Africa) to travel to Berlin, Germany, later this year to meet with other groups of top achievers from around the world. A number of our pupils also made it through to the second round of the Amesa Maths challenge and we will report on their progress as news becomes available. We look forward to a bumper second term, the highlight of which will be our annual Schulfest (school fête), at which we will celebrate 160 years of Hermannsburg this year. On Friday, 13 May we will welcome old pupils and friends of the school to an afternoon programme of music and a bonfire and braai in the evening before hosting the Spar regional hockey tournament, high school and primary school hockey and sevens rugby on Saturday, 14 May, when we will also have the usual craft market, kiddie games and meat sales as well as lots of treats for young and old(er). The celebrations will end with a church service on the Sunday before we bid our

What’s flowering in April HELICHRYSUM oligopappum, classified vulnerable, is a perennial herb found in Noodsberg, Mooi River, Karkloof and Mariondale. Growing in poor or stony grasslands, Helichrysum oligopappum populations are declining as a direct result of habitat transformation. Forest plantations, agricultural development, human settlements and invasive plants are the major threats to this species, which will continue declining as its natural habitats deteriorate. The plant grows in bunches with vegetative branches that are dwarfed and massed on the crown. The leaves are in a rosette and the flowering stems are several and silky-silvery are similar but much shorter and decreasing rapidly in size upwards. Flower heads are clustered and the bases of the individual heads which have silky-woolly hairs. The flowers are not radiating, the outer tips are reddish-brown and the inner tips bright canary yellow. Flowers are 10−13, yellow in colour and are known to flower from February. Visit www.sanbi.org for more information about the South African National Biodiversity Institute.

Chain of helping one another Sir, HELPING people is a blessing, that feeling of fulfillment knowing you have made a difference to someone's life. Imagine the endless possibilities you can create for someone or they can create for you with goodness coming full circle. The chain of helping is very

simple. It comes with many rewards and shows that every human has God in them. The five steps: Step 1: Help a person in need. Step 2: When you have finished helping the person let them know how special they are, what you value in them.

Step 3: When the person says thank you, say, "instead of thanking me, you should help at least three people and they in turn should help another three, and so on with thousands being helped as the chain is repeated. Step 4: When the chain starts

you are most likely to be helped. Step 5: Watch the world become joyful again. No matter what religion you are, pray to God to give gratitude and ask for guidance in this wonderful journey. Luselan Naiker

Just three ingredients GRILLED CHICKEN BREASTS Serves: 2 Ingredients: • ½ cup soy sauce • fresh ginger, peeled and minced • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts • sesame seeds, optional, for garnish Method: • In a small bowl, add soy sauce and ginger and whisk to combine. Set aside ½ the marinade in a small bowl (cover until ready to use). • Marinate chicken in ½ the marinade for 30 minutes to one hour in a large ziplock bag and roll the sides down. Put the bag in a large bowl ,add the chicken, and pour the marinade over the chicken breasts. Then seal the bag and make sure the chicken is covered all round by the marinadethe chicken. • Pre-heat grill. Grill chicken, brushing with reserved marinade occasionally, until cooked through, about 6-8 minutes per side, depending on grill type and heat level. • Serve with rice and vegetable of choice and sprinkle with sesame seeds, if using. PRETZEL COATED HONEY MUSTARD CHICKEN 4 servings Ingredients: 2 kg boneless skinless chicken breasts 1 1/3 cups honey mustard pretzels 1/2 cup honey mustard dressing (1/2 tsp sea salt and coarse black peppercorns Cooking spray to grease Method: • On cutting board lay out chicken tenders and lightly season with salt and pepper. Transfer to large bowl, then pour over with honey mustard dressing. Cover and allow to marinate in refrigerator for at least 1 hour. • When ready to cook, fit wire rack to a baking sheet and grease with cooking spray. Next, pulse pretzels in food processor until they resemble breadcrumbs,

scraping the sides with a spatula as needed. Spread out pretzel crumbs onto large plate, then set aside. • One chicken tender at a time, shake off excess dressing, then coat in pretzel crumbs before placing on greased wire rack. Bake at 350°C for 20 minutes, then broil for 2-3 minutes more until crispy. Immediately plate and serve, pairing with extra honey mustard dressing if desired. If you don't have a wire rack and/or one that fits into a baking sheet, make sure you turn the tenders half-way through cooking. Proud parents support the winners. CHILDREN from Little Angels Nursery and Pre-school took part in their annual fun walk on Thursday,

the 17 March. The winners were determined by the highest amount collected on

their sponsorship sheets. The winners were Nathaniel Gundani (first), Zoe Moodley (second) and Simthande Dladla (third). A further 10 children were rewarded for their concerted effort despite not making the top three positions. The children were awarded with books for effort as we understand the importance of reading in the lives of children. The staff of Little Angels express their gratitude to parents, care givers and everyone who assisted in any way for their continuous support and response in school activities. We look forward to an exciting and eventful 2016.

Shadow Column THE Greytown Gazette publishes a monthly Shadow Column at the end of each month to list events to come throughout the year. The main objective is to notify the public of what events are scheduled to take place, or about to, in order to avoid, as far as possible “double dating” - that is two events on the same day which could create problems not only for the organisers, but also for the public. An appeal therefore goes to schools, churches, NGOs, sports bodies, clubs, etc., to submit dates and event details to the Greytown Gazette for publication as soon as possible.
