‘Greytown Gazette’ apologies for leftout municipal advert THE Greytown Gazette records an apology to Umvoti Municipality for the non-publication of Notice number 3115 relating to a special council budget meeting which was due to be held on Friday 27 May at 2pm in the Council Chambers. The advertisement was proc-
essed by this office as usual, but unfortunately there was a mixup in the final production and the advertisement was left out. A written apology was sent to the municipality last Wednesday. The Greytown Gazette editor went to the meeting at 2pm.
There was one ANC councillor present. On questioning the Municipal Manager, Mr B. Xulu as to when the meeting would start he said probably 3pm, and that he was waiting for the Mayor, Speaker and a Councillor to return from a meeting at Umzinyathi and when they arrived the
meeting would start. The Greytown Gazette was subsequently informed that the IFP would not be attending the meeting because although it was called as a special budget meeting no budget documents had been provided with the agenda – the IFP submitted a letter of apology. The DA Councillor also apologised. However the meeting started after 3pm when the three arrived from Umzinyathi with the Speaker IFP Councillor M. Yengwa making up the quorum.

Dean Brown (incoming UAS president), Rens Van der Watt (entertainer), Greg Hull (outgoing UAS president) and his wife Jilly. THE 161st annual general meeting of the Umvoti Agricultural Society (UAS) was held on Friday 20 May at the Moth Hall. Outgoing president Greg Hull outlined achievements over the past year on behalf of farmers in the various portfolios - security, land issues, municipal rates, roads ,emerging farmers and community
upliftment, environmental matters, etc. He also touched on the importance of being a member of the local farmers’ association, and the significance of being a member of Kwanalu, which was doing an incredible job representing organised agriculture in KZN. The outgoing chairman referred to the great spirit in the area among local farmers, who are always ready
to help each other, no matter the situation. The AGM was followed by a dinner, at which Rens Van der Watt, sang and entertained members with his humorous dry sense of humour. It was an enjoyable evening with a good attendance from UAS members. Thanks to the Moths for the venue, Tranquilitea, Juan Pretorius for the meal and Field Security for providing security guards.

16Year Freedom flame in Greytown tomorrow MARKING 16 years of democratic local government the Freedom flame will be in Umvoti tomorrow, Thursday 2 June. The flame started its journey of travelling through the 61 KZN municipalities in Ugu District, which was chosen as the best performing district in KZN having recorded the most number of clean audits in its six local municipalities. Umzimyathi proceedings started on 31 May when the flame was officially handed to the district mayor, local mayors amakhosi and key stakeholders. Today, 1 June Umzinyathi dignitaries and guests visited four projects in the area and then will take part in the main event in the Mpumelelo stadium in Dundee with a series of addresses after the lighting of the flame. At 2 pm the flame will be formally handed over to Umvoti Municipality and transported to the Greytown
Police Station. On Thursday 2 June the flame and dignitaries will arrive at Greytown Council Chamber between 8.30am and 9am. From 9.30am guests will visit the following projects: Muden water, Ngome electrification, 497 housing, 497 electrification and Matimatolo housing project. The main meeting will take place at 12pm at Busane Stadium, Matimatolo, where a number of speeches will be given with the keynote address by Mr V.C. Xaba, MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development. At 2pm the flame will be handed over to Msinga Municipality. On Friday 3 June projects to be visited are Msinga bulk water and Msinga road construction followed by a meeting in the community hall, and then addresses. The flame then gets handed to Nquthu Munic-
ipality with a similar programme in the Mpulelelweni community hall. Finally the Umzinyathi dignitaries hand the flame to Amajuba District Municipality on Saturday 4 June at 2pm. It has been 21 years since the advent of democracy and 16 years into the operation of a new local government dispensation. It is also worth mentioning that local government has not only survived a fundamental restructuring over the past 16 years, it has also made great strides towards extending service delivery and development to marginalised communities. In 16 years, local government has emerged from being an institution that was subservient and illegitimate to an institution with democratically elected leadership, who have constitutional status and a developmental agenda.
As expectations of local government service delivery have risen, it has also become evident that the broader transformation of local government is by no means complete. Noticeable progress has been made in improving the lives of our communities since the establishment of local government. Our task, going forward, is to work tirelessly in addressing the triple challenge of poverty, unemployment and inequality. It is for this reason that as part of the celebrations of 16 years of democratic local government and beyond, we will be mobilising our communities behind the National Development Plan: Vision- 2030, as our collective response to the challenges faced by the communities. The 16 years of democratic local government celebrations will officially start with a launch in our district under the Umuziwabantu Lo-
cal Municipality-. Ugu District has been given the nod to host the launch because our district has recorded the most number of clean audits among its local municipalities in the latest conducted audit outcomes. This makes Ugu District the best performing district in KZN. The celebrations will showcase and highlight achievements of the democratic government over the past 16 years by carrying the "celebration flame" to the six local municipalities in the district. These celebrations will also seek to mobilise all communities, government departments and agencies, organised labour, business, civil society, the media, faith-based organisations and the academic fraternity in the realisation of 16 years of local democratic government development towards the attainment of the noble principle of "people shall govern".

New Hanover Prep news ON Friday, 20 May New Hanover Prep hosted an inter-schools crosscountry meeting. It was a wonderful afternoon with 14 schools and
over 420 runners participating. The runners enjoyed the route through the school grounds and surrounding sugar-cane fields.
NHP crosscountry runner, Daniel Uys sets the pace in the U9 event.
Junior Jottings THE U10 hockey girls travelled to Wartburg School to play in a match. They tried hard and played well. They managed to beat them and were happy as a result. The girls played Wartburg U11 A and B. They drew 0-0 against the A team and won 2-0 against the B team. The U9 rugby boys travelled to Cowan House on 25 May. The boys played a wonderful game of rugby. They beat the Cowan House B side 35-5. Man of the
match was Minenhle Phungula scoring four tries. Thubalihle Njoko also had the opportunity to play for Cowan House, who were a player short. On Saturday 28 May the Greytown Junior U13 side played against Drakensview. Greytown scored first but, unfortunately, could not maintain the lead. Drakensview scored twice and converted. A late try by Nkazimulo Mzolo brought the final score to 17-19 in Drakensview's favour.

Window on Wembley IT was an honour for the Wembley College rugby boys to have a Sharks rugby player assist in a special practice session on Tuesday 24 May. Sipho Mkhize is a young man who played his first rugby game in a Wembley rugby Jersey at age 11 when he helped out the Wembley U13 rugby team. Ever since then his dream was to one day become a professional rugby player. Sipho attended Greytown High School from 2008 to 2012 where he represented the first rugby team from 2011 to 2012. After matriculating he moved down to Durban to join the Sharks Rugby Academy. Since then he has worked his way through the ranks playing for the Sharks U19 Currie Cup team in 2013 and 2014. In 2015 he represented the Sharks at U21 level. His breakthrough came this year when he was selected for the Sharks XV team at left wing and was recently drawn into the Super Rugby squad. This young man is truly an inspiration to all of us and we look forward to watching him play exciting running rugby for the Sharks in years to come. It was a fun outing with the whole junior primary phase hopping on buses after short break to go to the Greytown High School hall to see the "Olympics" puppet show. It was a roaring success. There were water polo and synchronised swimming teams who were made up of audience participants. We saw the most beautiful puppets doing gymnastics and dancing to music straight from Brazil. We also had flag bearers and cheerleaders. It is safe to say that this puppet show was a big highlight of our week, we can't wait to see if the real Olympics in Brazil is just as exciting as this show was. Our Book Week began with a visit from Books2U. There was a good selection of books and Sean from Hooked on Books sent an email to compliment Wembley
Sharks Rugby and Currie Cup player, Sipho Mkhize coaches Wembley College boys who aim to follow in his footsteps. on the children's great manners and their love for books and reading. On a cold Friday morning, Wembley, St Davids and Hermannsburg packed the Aloe Hall to watch another successful Hooked on Books show. The three talented actors gave us snippets of five story books and one anthology. As usual, there was plenty of audience participation which the children really loved. This is a highlight of Book Week and our school calendar. The junior primary children have responded well to the Squirt initiative. We have had regular silent reading at

school during Book Week and it is hoped that this will foster a love of reading that will remain with them for many years. What a colourful collection of characters arrived at school on Wednesday for our JP Book Character Day. The Aloe Hall was filled with many enthusiastic boys and girls, some almost unrecognisable, dressed up as “Cat in the Hat”, “Goldilocks”, one of the Snooze Brothers and many others. Thank you to the parents for their creative input. The children had a funfilled Book Character Day which marked the end of another successful Book Week.

Hermannsburg Little Oaks’ Oracle LAST Thursday, the Little Oaks visited Wally Gevers on his farm. Although they had already been taught a bit about farm animals and why we need them, it was quite another experience to see them live. When the Little Oaks got off the bus, some grimaced at the smell of wholesome country air, but everyone soon got used to all of it, splitting up into two groups and heading off to see all the farm animals. They saw mommy pigs with their piglets, bulls, cows and
calves, cats, dogs and even some chickens laying eggs - and were sad when they all had to board the bus again. Everyone would have loved to have stayed longer - the visit to the farm was loads of fun and the Little Oaks learnt a lot. A big thank you to Uncle Wally and especially to Uncle Leon, for showing us around and for answering our questions. The Little Oaks visit cows at Uncle Wally’s farm.
Hermannsburg Happenings Our Grade 10 pupils about to depart for Germany, wearing sponsored jackets, which will keep them warm during their trip.
Sagel Govender cuddles the most recent arrival at Kammaland Peanut the guinea pig. Children learn how to feed the animals and play with them.
THE Grade 10 group arrived safely in Reutlingen on the return leg of the Germany exchange programme, and have enjoyed a long weekend with their host families. In the course of the four weeks they will be in Germany, our pupils will be immersed in the German culture and language, and will visit many historic sites, universities, cultural events and spend time going to lessons in our partner school, Bildungszentrum-Nord (BZN). We wish them loads of fun
as they learn about themselves and another country. In hockey news, our combined U14 and U16 girls’ side won their match 2-1 last week against Epworth. The U13 girls played in Eston, winning two and drawing four games - Claremont (0-0), St John’s (0-0), Wykeham (0-0), Ixopo (0-0), Wykeham (2-0) and St John’s (1-0). Rachel scored all three goals, and the team is becoming a force to be reckoned with. Our rugby boys enjoyed a spit

Thanks to Mr and Mrs Karl Ortmann for sponsoring the meat and Mr Ruben Surendorff for preparing it. We were also glad that the players from Hermannsburg Combined School could join in they have been training and playing Sevens rugby with our players as they get to know the game as part of our sports development programme.
In other sporting news, we are proud to announce that Brittany Uys, one of the athletes in the elite group of young athletes placed at various schools in KZN, who is being trained at Hermannsburg for high jump by Mr Martin Marx, has been included in the South African squad for the All African Championships which will be held in Durban from 22 June to 26 June. This is part of a long-term development programme to attract top athletes and coaches to our school.
