Lake Merthley update THE level of Lake Merthley is increasing ever so slowly - on Monday it was 28.15% full. According to the weather forecasts, which hopefully are wrong, minimal rainfall is forecast for the next week. Following Monday's searing, scorching 37°C pessimists are also forecasting that February will score even higher temperatures.
Brief Ward 10 protest ABOUT 200 Ward 10 members blockaded the road on the outskirts of Greytown, between Sasko and Mascor from 4.30am on Monday allegedly protesting against members appointed to a ward committee. Umvoti Municipality personnel and Greytown SAPS were promptly on the scene and the road was cleared by 6am.

Killer road claims yet another victim OVER the years the Greytown/ New Hanover/Pietermaritzburg road has become known as the “killer” road as so many people have been injured and killed travelling along it. It is dangerous – the standard of driving at most times is appalling – drivers ignore barrier lines, overtake on blind corners and speed, etc. The daily death toll on South African roads is frightening and even more so during holidays, and with the festive season looming sadly the carnage will escalate. Regular travellers on the R33 report that there are an increasing number of drivers who selfishly and irresponsibly defy the rules of the road with impunity flagrantly flaunting the rules of the road and safety. A prime example of this attitude took place last Wednesday 23 November at approximately 4.30pm. A Greytown driver told the Greytown Gazette: “It was with utter incredulity and disbelief that I witnessed the driver of a
Three people were injured and two vehicles wrecked through the selfish and irresponsible behaviour of a driver who did not even stop. white NUR registration panel van overtake a pick-up truck towing a trailer on a solid white line, on a blind corner approximately five kilometres on the Pietermaritzburg side of New Hanover. “At the sudden appearance of an oncoming car the offending driver swerved in front of the vehicle he was illegally overtaking, hitting the front of it as he pushed ahead to avoid the approaching car. The glancing impact caused the driver of the pick-up to lose control of his vehicle while the driver of the oncoming car slowed down and
pulled over in an attempt to avoid the now crazily swerving pick-up and trailer as the hapless driver fought desperately to regain control.” Within seconds, as the NUR registered vehicle disappeared in the distance, the two vehicles collided, the impact causing the pick-up and trailer to overturn and car to be flung far onto the verge. All three individuals involved were injured with the driver of the car being taken to hospital and the other driver and passenger treated on the scene. The offending driver, whose
selfish actions and complete disregard for the safety of other road users caused this accident, casually continued on his way, totally uncaring about the trauma, injury and damage suffered by innocent road users because of his irresponsible and selfish behaviour. The tragic injustice of this situation is that the driver who caused the accident deliberately avoided the consequences of his or her action and will not be held accountable. Therefore, it is inevitable that this driver will continue driving in this inconsiderate and potentially lethal manner. Earlier on Wednesday a man lost his life when the truck he was driving rolled off the R33 near New Hanover. It is believed he lost control of the vehicle. ER24 paramedics, and fire services found the truck lying on its side against a fence and discovered the body of a man inside the cab. Rescue services had to use specialised equipment to free the body.

UFPA 2016 fire season UMVOTI Fire Protection Services (UFPA) held its end-of-fire-season braai on Friday evening, 18 November at the Cavern in Seven Oaks. There was a good turnout of members to enjoy this evening, and no doubt to “celebrate” the mild fire season that was experienced in the area, despite the prediction that because of the drought conditions it would be a very busy and long fire season. During the latter half of July the district received most welcome rains, which certainly improved the fire situation. From September small amounts of rainfall started to be recorded and the rainfall was more frequent. A total of 87 fire incidents were reported during this fire season, slightly more than the 2015 season of 76, however, the total area burnt was greatly reduced - 539ha compared to 834ha in 2015. It is pleasing to note that there
were no major incidents. There are a number of factors that have contributed to this reduction and the public must be complimented on their efforts shown towards fire awareness. At Friday’s function a presentation was made to Dave Carroll for his contribution to G911 for the past 20 years. He received a cheque of donations collected by the community, which was presented by Ian Hill from the G911 board. Rolf Königkrämer also presented a gift to Dave Carroll from the UAS and UFPA committees for his valuable contribution to these two associations over the years as the G911 representative. The fun part of the evening was once again the end-of-fire- season braai awards with cleverly thought-out prizes, presented by Murray Mason as follows: “Colour Blindness Awards” – Pierre Le Roux and Martin Eggers.
“Origin Water Award” (floating trophy) – Ian Hill. “Wakey Wakey Award” - Andy Mason. “Driving Skills Award” - Ed Hayter. “Broken Telephone Award” – Derrick Clegg and Dieter Meyer “The Tortoise and the Hare award” – Rolf Königkrämer. Lathaniel Reynolds “Lay Preacher of the Year Award” – Shaun Henderson. “Radio Call since 1997” – Dave Carroll and “Shining Light” - Bridget Holmes.
Award winners with Murray Mason.
Ian Hill, on behalf of the G911 board, presents a cheque to Dave Carroll in appreciation of his committed services to the community in his 20year association with G911.
Rolf Koningkramer presents a gift to Dave Carroll on behalf of the Umvoti Agricultural Society and UFPA in appreciation of his services.

Winning combination GJS and Aheers CONGRATULATIONS to Greytown Junior School whose enthusiastic pupils and management came tops in the recent drought initiative to purchase Hippo rollers for rural areas. 17 November, marked the highly successful culmination of the partnership between Greytown Junior School and Aheers. At this official handover of four Hippo rollers to Gift of the Givers, VIP guest was Naresh Aheer, and GJS principal Mr Nel and Tracy Adkins, representative for the head office of drought relief and disaster management in Pietermaritzburg. The three performed a short play outlining and emphasising the importance of saving water to prevent drought disasters. Lucky draws were held in recognition of the fantastic input of pupils and staff in the creative art exhibition held at the store.
The three main role players in the team provided the necessary “magic” for lucky draws by concealing their faces behind green boards while pupils of each grade, voted for who they thought would bring them the most luck in the draw. Mr Nel was guilty of peeping when his eyes should have been closed. The pupils were quick to report his cheating by loud clapping. Great fun was had by all. At the end of the function, the proud team handed over a total of four Hippo rollers for distribution by Gift of Givers to those in need in the rural areas. The winning combination of Aheers and Greytown Junior School resulted in the partnership being the overall winning combination of the drought drive This committed team even beat schools in the Pietermaritzburg area.
The winning Greytown Junior School team with principal Mr Nel, Tracy Adkins of the drought relief initiative and Naresh Aheer and two of the four Hippo rollers donated through the fund raising of GJS and Aheers. The rollers will make life a lot easier, especially for the elderly, who have to walk vast distances to fetch water.

16 Days of Activism THE 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children is an international campaign that takes place every year from 25 November to 10 December. The campaign aims to create an increasing awareness of the negative impact of violence on women and children. South African statistics are frightening – it is estimated that one out of every six women is regularly assaulted by her partner and in at least 46% of cases, the men involved also abuse the children living with the woman. A recent national survey by Optimus Study on child sexual abuse and maltreatment found that one in every three youngsters had experienced some sort of sexual abuse by the age of 17 and there are many unreported cases. South Africa adopted the campaign in 1998 as one of the intervention strategies towards creating a society free of violence. The campaign continues to raise awareness among South Africans about the negative impact of violence against women and children on all members of the community. Violence takes many forms - physical,
emotional and poverty with accompanying starvation, humiliation and degradation. Poverty, inequality and unemployment are conditions under which violence thrives. Children who have grown up in an abusive family atmosphere are more likely to perpetuate and even experience more violence themselves in adulthood., During the campaign wear a white ribbon as a symbol of peace and the commitment never to commit or condone violence. Participate in 16 Days of Activism activities, volunteer in support of non-governmental organisations and community groups who support abused women and children. Many organisations that help abuse victims and survivors need assistance from the public. Encourage silent female victims to challenge abuse and report child abuse -many women are unaware of their rights while many ofear further violence if they report the abuse. Speak out, not only during the 16 days, but for the 365 days of each year against violence and abuse against anyone – women, men and children.

Hermannsburg Little Oaks’ Oracle GRADUATION and the ABC Schützenfest are two established Hermannsburg traditions for the Little Oaks and Grade 1s and this year 20 Little Oaks graduated and said goodbye to the other Kindergarten pupils with a dramatisation of the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty, which they rounded off with rendition of the song of Sleeping Beauty from the German play. A slideshow, with a commentary from Ms Micayla Reineke and Ms Annette Gathmann, showed off all the great moments of this year’s experiences in the Kindergarten. Our Little Oaks looked smart
and proud in their graduation gowns as they were handed their graduation certificates, after which they were welcomed with the poem Opposite day by Ken Nesbitt, performed by the Grade 1 pupils. We wish our Little Oaks all the best as they go forward into Grade 1, and express a special word of thanks to Mrs Uta Malzahn, who so ably leads the Little Oaks Kindergarten. Our graduating Grade R pupils with their teacher, and head of the Little Oaks’ Kindergarten, Uta Malzahn.

Grade 5 pupils celebrate Christmas Grade 5 pupils at Cebolesizwe School (Thorntree) in Muden celebrated Christmas on 18 November with music and lunch.
Indlovana news PRIZE-GIVING was a great success last Thursday as the school proudly celebrated 21 years since its establishment. Principal Mrs Mngadi said this year had been one of the most fruitful. Teachers and pupils worked tirelessly to earn good results academically and in extracurricular activities. She congratulated all the top achievers. Among the pupils who achieved the most awards were Mntungwa Msizi from Grade 5 who got three, Malevu Qiniso from Grade 4 got four, Myaka Simnikiwe from Grade 6 got three and Gwala Lungiswa from Grade 7 received four. Former principal of the school, Mr M.P. Ndlovu, was the guest speaker and told the history of the school. He said the suc-
cess of the school was due to the first SGB and teaching staff who laid a solid foundation, and sought a trend that had been followed to this far. “Many teachers have left this school for greener pastures, but each new teacher fits well in the establishment.” He concluded by acknowledging the academics that have been produced, highlighting Khulekani Khumalo who has achieved a lot from a faculty of law and is currently doing his PHD degree at UKZN. On behalf of the school Mr N.I. Ngubane thanked businesses who partnered with the school this year. These included CWP Security, Plennegy, Umvoti Municipality (Ngcebo Maphanga and Khaya Goge), Tovem Church, Land Bank, Min Cash, Aheers, Muden Agricultural Coop and Mbanjwa Catering. Elen’s Team and Ms Madlala were thanked for the prayer sermons they provide weekly. - H.W. Xulu.

Two Wembley ‘millennial’ achievers IN American society, the teenage generation and 20- something's are called “Millennials”. William Strauss and Neil Howe coined this phrase and weren't sure if the term would stick. This term has gained popularity. This is what we can expect from a Millennial according to Strauss and Howe's theory on labelling each generation according to their common traits. Older generations will call them overconfident, self-involved, narcissistic and technology obsessed. Millennials will read blogs instead of newspapers. This is the “me” generation, who socialise every hour sending an average of 88 texts a day, living under the constant influence of their friends and are deeply anxious about missing out on something better. They use acronyms to describe things: FOMO is the "Fear Of Missing Out" and YOLO is "You Only Live Once". Conversations don't happen face to face, they converse through screens - snapchat, Facebook, instagram. Millennials don't respect authority, but they don't rebel against authority either. However, self-obsessed Millennials will change our world. They are about "think, think, think". They are positive and accepting of difference in people. Their desire is to find new and better ways of doing things. They are pragmatic idealists, who think rather than dream. Wembley College has two Millennials who know how to think. Georgia Brown and Ross Goble both achieved top Cambridge results in South Africa. Georgia achieved the highest mark in ICT (information communication studies) 93% and Ross achieved the top physical science mark (combination of physical science and chemistry) 95%. We are convinced they are the Millinnials, who are going to change our world for the better. How they react to the challenges facing this geneneration will determine their success. Our clever Millennials need to make sure they unplug from technology and climb the mountains so they really see the world. - Louise Yeadon.

Hermannsburg Happenings BINOCULARS, check-list, field guide, sun block, hats - a number of our pupils and teachers braved an early start on Saturday to catch the proverbial early bird as they participated in the Birding Big Day, going far afield to identify as many species of our feathered friends as possible. After spotting a multitude of birds, they came back happy, but tired having done their bit to contribute to the annual census of bird species. Also on Saturday, the Grade R graduates were welcomed as prospective Grade 1 pupils for 2017 at the ABC Schützenfest, with a welcome message from Mrs Sonja Ter-

ry, HOD of the primary school, and a short presentation by this year’s Grade 1s. On Sunday, our school family enjoyed the celebration of the first Sunday in Advent in the Hermannsburg church hall. Our pupils - and old pupils - led the scripture readings while our choirs (school choir, Viva Voce girls’ Choir and the Bro-ties Boys’ Choir) as well as our school’s recorder ensemble complemented the congregation’s brass band at the service. Thank you to all who contributed to make it a special occasion, and for the treats afterwards with the tea and coffee.

Congratulations to Amy Francis who passed her singing exam with merit. She has a promising singing career in front of her.
ON Saturday 19 November, Wembley College hosted the annual fun Colour Run fund-raiser. The event was a great success with 272 participants enjoying a colourful, fun-filled morning of exercise, 42 more than last year. Participants were able to choose between a two kilometre and five kilometre route, both of which boasted spectacular views of the surrounding farmland, not to mention the wild life that runs around in the forest. If you kept your eyes open, you may have seen reedbuck, duiker, hares, vervet monkeys as well as an abundant variety of bird life. This event raised money, which will go towards the hockey tours
next year that will take place at St Dominic’s Academy in Newcastle. Thank you to the members of the Wembley family and others who supported this fund-raiser. Congratulations to Wembley College for winning the Books 2 You Carnival Reading competition. Wembley received a wonderful prize of R2 000 worth of books for the library. A big thank you to Books 2 You. Simply Cricket will be hosting a cricket clinic at Wembley College on 5 and 6 December from 9am to 4pm on the 5 December and 9am to 12pm on 6 December.
