Matomela Trust weekend MAIN through roads in Greytown will be closed this weekend as the annual Matomela family get-together takes place at Lake Merthley and Greytown Town Hall. From 6am on Saturday 8 October until 10pm and again on Sunday from 6am to 4pm Bell and Pine, Bell and York and Pine-Maitland streets will be closed to traffic.
The invitation sent by the Isigungu SamaNxamalala Matomela Trust to its Heritage Day celebration on Saturday at Lake Merthley states “since 2009, the Zuma clan has been honoured by the good support and co-operation from the various municipalities as it prepares and commemorates the life and times of Inkosi uMstomela kaShisa, who was a contemporary of His Maj-
esty King Shaka kaSensangakhona, the founder of the Zulu nation. Inkosi Matomela, whose grave site is where the Greytown Hall today stands, was known for his bravery and his particularly cordial relationship with King Shaka.” The event is two pronged, not only to commemorate the life and times of the Inkosi, but also
In memory of Greytown’s first democratically elected mayor MEMBERS of the Ngubane family gathered last weekend for the unveiling of the tombstone of Alderman Titus Ngubane who died on 13 October, 201I. The Greytown Gazette announced his death stating: “Although short in stature he stood tall among his fellows as highlighted by the enormous number of tributes pouring in for the late Titus Ngubane at the age of 72.” As a popular teacher, Titus was renowned for changing the vandalised and run-down Dolo High School into one of the top schools in the district. Titus, a staunch member of the ANC, served as a councillor for many years and was involved in the amalgamation of Greytown and Enhlalakahle. He was appointed deputy-mayor in 1994 and the Greytown Mayor in 1996 after the first democratic elections. He filled this position with dignity earning the respect of all.
to fund raise for the Matomela Trust, which promotes education, heritage and culture. These celebrations over the past years have been attended by President Jacob Zuma, top government leaders, traditional leaders and members of the Matomela clan. It is reported that the annual gala dinner will be held in the town hall on Saturday evening.
Water update DESPITE the very welcome 72ml rain recorded in Greytown in September, drought conditions still remain. Greytonians are requested to continue their outstanding efforts in saving water and adjusting to the minimal flow in the mornings. Lake Merthley is 18.04% full. Still no update on the Craigieburn pipeline from Umzinyathi District Municipality, and the level of Craigieburn dam certainly does not indicate that it will be a major supply source of water to Greytown in the near future.

Gogo rapist get 10 years THREE years ago, on 17 May, 2013, 20year-old Sandile Malgas, after attending a traditional function in Mbuba broke into the house of a 68-year-old woman and raped her. Malgas, who was drunk at the time, broke the window of his victim’s bedroom to get into the house. In his drunken state he left behind the traditional weapons he had taken to the function when he fled the scene. Investigating Officer Sagren Moodley linked the suspect through the traditional weapons on statements from witnesses and the local induna. Malgas was identified, and his DNA was linked to the crime. On 29 September in the Greytown Regional Court, Malgas was found guilty and sentenced to 10 years.

Garden Club creates garden rooms RUDYARD Kipling once wrote: “Gardens are not made by singing ‘Oh how beautiful’, and sitting in the shade.” Much careful planning and thought goes into creating a garden that begs the visitor to explore its interest and beauty. “Creating Garden Rooms” is the topic to be presented landscaper extraordinaire, Michelle Bodley, at the Umvoti Garden Club meeting on Tuesday 12 October. This, the final meeting of the year, is to be hosted at Fairfield Estates near Seven Oaks, at the home and garden of Rupert and Sally-Jane Crowe. The meeting starts at 9am for 9.30am. Please bring chairs and wear suitable shoes for walking in the garden. Michelle is a hands-on gardener and landscaper with many years’ experi-
UMVOTI Youth In Business Forum hosted funding representations from various government agencies - the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda), Ithala Bank and Department of Economic Development (EDTEA) in a meeting on 16 Septemebr. These agencies advised young business owners about various ways and methods they can use and apply to get funding and business support. The forum intends to serve as a hub to connect lo-
ence of gardening in the harshly cold climate of Cedarville in East Griqualand. The latest copy of The Gardener magazine features the beautiful garden created by Michelle over the decades while she lived on the farm aptly named “Paradise”. This is indeed proof of the fascination and interest created by building a garden of many rooms. Following the presentation, tea and a selection of eats can be enjoyed on the lawns of Sally-Jane’s expansive garden. For members and guests wishing to gain a head-start with festive shopping, a number of stalls will be offering a variety of locally produced gifting ideas. Members are encouraged to bring guests to enjoy a social morning of gardening inspiration and gift shopping.

According to chairperson Dumi Mdluli, the meeting also served as a platform to reintroduce the Youth In Business Forum structure to the public and to clarify the key objectives. Umvoti Mayor, Thami Ngubane, a keynote speaker said the main focus of government is on business transformation and the economic empowerment of young people, who constitute approximately 70% of unemployed

Bullying, a big no no AN increase in the number and severity of bullying incidents in South African schools calls for urgent and sustained intervention, an education expert at the Independent Institute of Education, Dr Gillian Mooney, has warned. “These cases making it into the media represent only a fraction of the mistreatment many children go through. But the devastating consequences of bullying are leaving a lasting mark on the lives of countless youngsters, and the problem will continue growing unless an effective strategy is developed and consistently enforced.” Although national and provincial education departments have policies and procedures in place more needs to be done to consistently support and educate pupils, parents and schools to ensure the safety and well being of everyone on the school grounds, she says. Bullying is centrally about trying to gain power, says Mooney, which means that a rise in bullying can be expected in societies where citizens feel disempowered. It has a ripple effect whereby the bully, victim and the bystander are affected. It is important that high-profile and easily accessible structures and processes are put in place to help schools deal with bullying, as teachers often feel their hands are tied and victims of bullying feel they have no voice. Additionally, bullies themselves should receive adequate support and counselling. Misconceptions about bullying. • False: adults should stay out of it when children re bullied. Adults must become involved. Teachers can monitor bullies to deter bullying behaviour.;p rincipals can discipline. . • False: boys are the most likely

victims. Both boys and girls are susceptible to bullying, although perhaps in different ways. Boys and girls are the targets of physical bullying, irls are more likely to experience relational, sexual and cyberbullying. • False: children should just toughen up. This myth is a hangover from ideas like “boys will be boys” and that children will “work it out”. Bullying can cause real harm and should not be ignored. • False: bystanders should stay out of it when they witness bullying. Evidence suggests that bystanders are also affected by witnessing bullying. Observers give bullies the audiences they crave, and legitimacy if they do not sanction the behaviour. Children can be taught to reduce bullying by noticing, reporting and intervening. • False: it’s easy to spot a bullied child. Children do not report everything that happens in their lives to their parents. Adults need to find ways to make reporting bullying easier for children, and to follow up effectively when they do.
SINCE January there has been an eye-catching new logo in the dairy section of local supermarkets. It’s the spring fresh green Moo2u label on 2 litre bottles of milk. Moo2u is a family dairy and processing plant situated just 15kms outside Greytown with strong local connections, owned by Mike van den Berg and Graeme Jarvie, with the processing plant run by Colin and Jenny Armstrong. With the focus on delivering products - milk, maas, cream and butter at present - to a market within a 150km radius, the products are guaranteed to be the freshest. Moo2u currently runs a herd of about 700 milk cows that are mainly pasture-fed and spend their days roaming freely on open grasslands. Raw milk from grass-fed cows is known to produce many beneficial micro-orga-
Community Watch tips on crime prevention ONE of the main objectives of the recently established Community Watch in Greytown is to create an awareness about what action can be taken to prevent crime through the involvement of residents, in co-operaiton with security firms, police and neighbours. There has been a very positive response all round following a spate of thefts and break-ins throughout the town. To ensure that as many as possible are informed about to what to do and what precautions to take Community Watch held a meeting last Thursday for domestic employees, who are often left in charge while their employers are at work or away. The meeting was rated as very informative and successful by the 70-plus who attended. At the meeting Community Watch personnel issued the following security advice: • Don’t leave keys in gate or lock. • Keep security gates locked at all times. • Employees must check with their employers first if a deliver, survey, unknown person arrives unexpectedly. • Before going outside to hang up washing or to garden, etc., check no one is lurking in the yard or on the pavement. • Always leave internal keys on the inside of the door so if an intruder tries to beak in you have time to lock yourself in. • If keys are lost or misplaced employees should inform employers so that locks can be changed if necessary.
DA councillor appointed IEC have announced that Rajan (Felix) Maharaj has been elected the DA PR Councillor on Umvoti Municipal Council. He replaces Prithi Roopai and is the only DA representative on the Council.
• When answering the phone, say your employer is not available - do not say they are not at home. • When walking to and from a taxi or bus - try to walk in a group rather than alone. • Employees should not tell anyone (even family) where or what valuables are in the home. • Make sure your security company's contact numbers and that of the local police are on your phone. If someone does break in to the house: • Know who to call, how to report the break-in and detailed address, also employer's contact details and who else to call in an emergency. • Make sure there is a list of emergency numbers easily available and that these numbers are on your phone. The next Community Watch meeting will take place at the Moth Hall on Thursday 11 September at 6.30pm.

state-of-the-art rotary system, which immediately detects any problem that might affect the milk quality. Window on Wembley AN exciting treat was in store for our SP pupils when our town's mayor, Councillor T. G. Ngubane, visited the school on Wednesday, 21 September. After the Grade 4’s historical and cultural tour of Greytown, he promised to visit us with some cake to celebrate his birthday (on 15 September he turned 32). Not only did he deliver on his promise, he also had a couple of extra surprises in store for us. We had the honour of meeting His Royal Highness, Prince Zulu and the American hip-hop artist and songwriter, Mr Africa Bambaataa. In an interview for an American documentary, Grade 4 pupil, Yastil Aheer, enlightened the camera crew with his knowledge about Nkosi Bhambatha from his social science project. This also coincided with celebrating our diverse and unique heritage as South Africans. Thanks must be given to the Mayor and his team for arranging this event and for supplying us with cake and juice. The Grade 6 class went to the Hills's farm
Greytown Gazette at Springkloof, which was an informative and enjoyable outing and we learnt so much about forestry, the products and marketing. Thank you to Mr and Mrs Hill for sharing their knowledge and time with us. Thank you, Mrs Martens, for helping with transport and giving up your time. On 16 September the Form 1 class set off for Hilton College. We had booked for two shows, Bones of Memory and Yinirespect. Both shows were interactive and enjoyable to watch. Our pupils learnt valuable information about our country's historical figures and what it means to respect yourself and others. On Tuesday 20 September the Grade 5 class were treated to an exciting outing to the Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg. This was a new experience for most of the pupils and great interest was shown for the art and some of the more liberal art posed interesting questions. After our gallery visit we hit the road again and headed for Butterflies for Africa where we watched a short, informative film about the life-cycle of a butterfly and their reasons for colouring, etc., and then proceeded to the butterfly house. The beautifully coloured butterflies and small spiky hedgehogs enthralled pupils. Greytown Mayor, Councillor T.G Ngubane and pupils at Wembley College.

Hermannsburg Happenings
Ntandoyenkosi Mpungose, Millisoa Mavie, Thuraiya Yusouff, Nondumiso Dlamini, Lihle Nyirenda and Sinqobile Mngoma dress up for the speech and drama festival at Hermannsburg before the holidays. THE fourth term is under way and we are glad to have all our pupils and teachers back for the last stretch before the Christmas holiday. The Grade 11 class started the term with a leadership camp at Spirit of Adventure, where they faced personal and group challenges during the activity-filled three days, focusing on “action-centred leadership”.
The Grade 12s are busy with their final preparations for the national senior certificate examinations, which start in two weeks’ time, while the rest of the school continues with the work for the year and the internal examinations in November. Our speech and drama festival, held towards the end of last term, saw a pleas-
ing number of high school and primary-school pupils participating. Many of them presented items they had chosen and rehearsed, with a little guidance from their teachers. Thanks to the two adjudicators, Pam Couperthwaite and Dorette Kliem (both retired teachers), who have many years of drama teaching behind them, for presiding over the day’s proceedings. They were duly impressed by the high standard of work presented by pupils and the wide variety of genres that was presented - recitations ranging from prose, poetry, song and dance to little skits. The end results were outstanding, with many pupils achieving excellent results a lot of A+ ratings were awarded. Coming up this weekend is the family fun day, which includes a sponsored walk and other activities for the family, promising to be good, wholesome exercise and fun for young and old(er). We look forward to more good sporting, music and academic results throughout the term, as we approach the end of our 160th Jubilee year.

Thank you to Dave Carroll Sir, LET me through the medium of your paper express our sincere gratitude to Dave Carroll for what he did, what he meant and what he still means to our community. Dave was very involved in the leadership of the Umvoti Commandos and when the commandos were disbanded, our “security” was left in a void and violent attacks and crime were at a starting point. Dave saw fit to manage and found 911 and partially fill this gap. What a tremendous organisation he subsequently helped to grow and mould. Dave ran 911 purely from donations, being at the time, one of the biggest contributors, himself. His organisation was there for everyone whether they donated towards it or not. He has been influential in various projects requested by community members. A little while ago he was instrumental in motivating for speed restrictions to
be put up on the R74 through Welgegund, making it safer for motorists, but more importantly, pedestrians. During farm attacks in our area of which we certainly had enough, Dave was always in attendance. I personally experienced his help often. The personal “Dave Carroll” touch, to unselfishly serve the whole community, will no longer be there and will be sorely missed. Using the words of Thomas Jefferson about a colleague, Dave at 911 “will be succeeded, but will never be replaced”. We salute you Dave, your unselfish ways and commitment to the greater good of us all. You are certainly a pillar and philanthropist and may we all strive to commit ourselves to our fellow community members in a manner as you have done over the years. With thanks. Abie Surendorff and family.

Impatiens a lovely rich hues of reds and oranges for ‘hot’ beds. IMPATIENS, known to many as “Busy Lizzies”, are a great addition to any summer garden, offering a mass of blooms for a long period. There are lovely rich hues of reds and oranges for “hot” beds, gentle pastels to relax the eye and a pure white hybrid to add a sense of coolness on those hot summer’s days. Impatiens will perform beautifully all summer, once established, discerning gardeners the world over have found them among the most carefree annuals in the garden. Impatiens prefer growing in a lightly or partially shaded position, but they will tolerate periods of full sun during the day - they do very well in morning sun positions. Impatiens can be used extensively around patios and pool areas, along driveways and at entrances, in shady beds under trees or in borders shaded by wall, in-between shrubs and ground covers.
Window boxes, containers and hanging baskets also make excellent homes. Like all seedlings, regular watering during the first two to three weeks is necessary. After the plants have established themselves, it is better to water thoroughly, less frequently. Remember that when it rains, plants under trees do not always get the benefit of the water because the trees act like an umbrella. Impatiens grown in sunnier positions will need more frequent watering. Impatiens are “carefree” plants and deadheading is not necessary. Occasionally, in heavy shade or where the plants have been over-watered or overfed they can become “leggy”. Pinching back will encourage branching, a better bush shape and more flowers. For more information, go to www.lifeisagarden.co.za - The Bedding Plant Growers Association.
October birthstones OCTOBER birthstones, opal and tourmaline, exhibit a vibrant spectrum of colours, and are in high demand for their unique hue combinations and crystal structures. The opal was a symbol of and hope to the ancient Romans. Others believed the opal had fallen from the heavens when lightning struck the Earth. According to legend, the gem was believed to make its wearer invisible and was a popular talisman of spies and thieves. The stone has a unique property in changing colour, which was believed to indicate the health and mental state of the wearer. It is associated with purity, innocence, hope and faith. The opal has healing properties and is believed to be effective in curing eye infections, enhancing one’s creativity, calming nerves and strengthening memory. Tourmalines are a relatively recent discovery and so lack an interesting background, lore, myths and legend. This gemstone, however, is known as the “peace stone” and is said to dispel anger, fear, jealousy and aggressiveness keeping the wearer calm and tranquil. It is said to have more psychological effects than physical effects and helps one retain calm when under pressure, battle negative emotions like anger, jealousy and promote peace and tranquility. When warmed or rubbed, this stone at-

tracts ash, bits of paper and lint. This happens since the gem is charged with static electricity when rubbed. The tourmaline is accorded a place of honour in its part in the studies and experiments with electricity conducted by Benjamin Franklin. The word “opal” is derived from the Roman term Opalus. Some believe the word was derived from Ops, wife of Saturn, the Goddess of fertility. Other references indicate the term was derived from the Sanskrit word Upala, meaning “valuable stone”. The word “tourmaline” is believed to have been derived from the Singhalese word Toramalli’, meaning “something out of the Earth”. The Sri Lankan term is applied to all green, brown or yellow stones.

Welcome helping hand at Sisekelo School IT was a big and welcome surprise for teachers and pupils at Sisekelo High School when Ndumiso Mncewabe (project manager) Nzamo Ntuli (Kranskop Clinic) and Thandiuwe Mncube (community development practitioner) came to the school to assist the female pupils with sanitary pads. The school, and in particular the girls, were most appreciated. Following the change of the school name to Sisekelo High School from Dingley Dell, the public expressed confusion. So it was decided by school personnel that it
would be of assistance to the public to erect a board with the school name and directions as it is not easy to find being close to the Ithuba
Trust compounds. Travelling from Greytown the board is on the left-hand side, opposite Kranskop Eskom.
Grade 10 pupils helped to erect the school’s new name board. Happy female pupils with their packs and Miss Z. Ngubane (teacher), Ndumi Mncwabe, Sister Z.P. Ntuli, Miss J.D. Dlomo (teacher) and P. Thandiwe Mncube.
October birth flower MARIGOLDS, one of the hardiest plants around, are the birth flower for October. Its intense yellow, gold or orange flower is said to be the symbol of passion and creativity. These flowers have been used for many purposes throughout history. In ancient times they were used for everything from healing ailments, dyeing fabric, creating cosmetics to seasoning food. In Medieval England, the flowers and leaves of the marigold, combined with ground eggshells, were added to heated ale and drunk as a treatment for the plague. Marigolds are natural insect repellents - the strong scent is said to keep aphids

Puppy love HAVING made the decision to bring puppy into your life, Greytown dog expert Benda Munitich advises this week on what to do when fetching your puppy A puppy is generally ready to leave its mother between six and eight weeks of age. • Find out what food the puppy has been accustomed to and ensure that it has had its first inoculation. • Take any records with you and ask the breeder to supply a little of the food it has been eating. • If you are on your own take a crate along to contain the puppy while travelling. Otherwise it can be held
Page 11
on someone's lap. • From the time the puppy arrives at your home it must start learning. • Be familiar with how a dog thinks. He is now part of a pack - there are top dogs, middle dogs, and bottom dogs. you are the pack leader in the puppy's eyes. • You must behave as the pack leader. The puppy will not just pick up your rules. As with a child he needs to learn from infancy. • You are the leader. First decide what your rules are and make sure that everybody else who has anything to do with the puppy also knows what your rules are.
• These rules must then be communicated to the puppy. • If you do this successfully you will have a happy member of your family pack and you will be established as the pack leader. • Obviously the puppy will not regard your four or five-year-old as the pack leader, but the child will have some control over him, especially if the rules are made clear. • The puppy wants and needs a leader as dogs are, by and large, dependant creatures. • Teaching good habits from the time he gets home is the start of teaching him to be a good citizen.

A SUCCESSFUL and unexpected addition to the popular Firebreak Five fun run trails was the response from runners to the request to donate old running shoes. At the prize giving last month Andy Mason and Hilary Bruss handed over a number of pairs to race winner Kwenza Ngubane, who has introduced a number youngsters in a rural area to trail running, assisting and inspiring them to take up the sport.
