Freedom flame in Umvoti FOLLOWING the lighting of the Freedom flame in Greytown on Thursday 1 June to mark the 16 years since the election of Umvoti’s first democratic council, an official group of dignitaries, including former MEC for Agriculture, Mr Cyril Xaba and Umvoti and Umzinyathi mayors moved to the main event at Busane stadium in Matimatolo. Addressing the crowd at the function Xaba referred to the government’s back-to-basics campaign to ensure that all municipalities provide the core services of clean drinking water, sanitation, electricity, shelter, waste removal and roads for communities. He said he was happy to report that Umvoti Municipality was on track in providing basic and other municipal services. He was impressed that council fast-tracked electricity projects by using internal funds to bridge-finance while waiting for grant funding, so Muden Woolstone and Ngo-

me, now have electricity. The more than R48 million Matimatolo housing project provided shelter to 600 beneficiaries. He was impressed by the 10 high masts installed at the cost of R5 million to combat the high crime rate in Eshane. Another impressive project was the cleaning up of the waste transfer station above Longhomes, Enhlalakahle. At the end of the function the celebration flame was handed to the Msinga Police Station Commander to be lit by the Msinga mayor the following day. The flame will be lit in all 61 KZN municipalities to mark 16 years of democratic local government. Two police officers found guilty of murder TWO SAPS officers from Kranskop police station were convicted of murder by Regional Court Magistrate, Mr Ngobese, in the Greytown Regional Court on 30 May. Nhlanhla Nxumalo (33) Lindekosi Sabela (35) were found guilty of shooting 28-year-old Thokozani Mchunu on 10 September, 2011. It was proved by the State that both accused had used their positions as police officers to carry

out the killing. Public Prosecutor Mrs Premie Naidoo submitted that on the night in question, acting on information received, both accused had tracked down Mchunu in the Ngome area where he was with his girlfriend. Using their State-issued firearms, the accused had shot Mchunu four times - Nxumalo with a R5 rifle and Sabela with a 9mm pistol. It was clear from the evidence

that both were off duty on the night in question and had tried to cover themselves by booking in for duty only after the shooting. They also claimed they had acted in self-defence. However, the State proved that although the deceased was armed at the time, his firearm was not ready to fire and that no shots had been fired from his firearm. Prosecutor Naidoo relied on

the AVL tracking report of the State vehicle used by the accused at the time, medical evidence, cellphone records and various occurrence book entries to prove the cover-up by both accused and that they had gone to Ngome with the sole intention of killing Mchunu. The case has been adjourned to 19 July for sentencing. Nxumalo is also standing trial in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on further charges of murder.

Greytown’s ‘Kasi 2 Kasi Tour’ AN exciting opportunity for musicians and artists throughout Umvoti is happening thanks to two enterprising Eshane residents who will be spending their June University holidays promoting local talent. Sanele E. Qhawe Sithole, a DUT management science graduate studying for a diploma, is a wellknown poetry-in-rhythm performer. He composed his own mix tape that has sold well. His poems are broadcast weekly and he has had made many appearances performing his poetry in KZN. He also runs an NPO company called The Youth Seed. Sanele “Venomous Viper” Mzolo, a DUT human resources graduate, is a well-known rapper who has performed on many stages and on radio and both feature on social network. The Kasi 2 Kasi tour has been organised with the aim of providing a platform for young and de-

veloping artist throughout Umvoti and give them coverage at various shows and on social media. The tour starts in Eshane on Friday 24 June in the workshop hall. Tour dates: Thursday 30 June at Matimatolo Hall.

Past mayor on ‘budget’ meeting Sir, THE Umvoti Municipality was to hold the annual budget meeting for 2016/17 financial year. The meeting was scheduled to take place on Friday 27 May at 2pm, but rumour has it that it only started around 3pm and whether the “standing orders” were followed is another matter of concern. The issue at hand is that our ratepayers and the public need to know the areas of concern in the budget as the burden will fall on their shoulders. There is a huge salary bill, which means a big slice of the budget goes

to pay salaries. The IFP has warned officials and council about the employment of staff without scientific and need assessments done by the municipality. In 2011 the new council had around 200 staff, including contract or casual seasonal workers. In 2016 the municipality has around 500 permanent staff, excluding contract or seasonal employees. There are important issues that have been outstanding in regard to Cogta MEC, Dube Mchunu's recommendations on forensic investi-

gations on senior officials. Nothing has been done to implement the recommendations. Secondly, the cases on the theft of municipal assets and the looting of property have not been finalised. The issue of the procurement of the plant and equipment (R23 million's worth) and the resolution to investigate this by the Hawks and other agencies has not been finalised. In addition there is the query about the mayor's security guards, the terms of reference for the contract and what the value of that contract to date is, as well as the

Pretty Things for Little Things campaign

which includes articles made from materials such as wood, tin or wire. Submissions open from 1 June and close on 31 August. Although the campaign is open to everyone, only senior citizens 60 years or older are eligible for prizes. Items can be entered at any Shoprite or Checkers store or at any of the Age-in-Action regional offices. Three winners per category will be selected in each province. The provincial winners each receive vouchers to the value of R2 000, R1 500 and R1 000 for first, second and third places, respectively. National winners receive vouchers to the value of R5 000, R3 000 and R2 000 for the top three positions, respectively. The campaign is a practical demonstration of how a retailer as large as Shoprite can join forces with an often forgotten, but important part of society – senior citizens – to bring joy to thousands of children across the country. For more information on how you can make a difference, visit www.age-in-action.co.za

PRETTY Things for Little Things is a two-prong campaign encouraging the creative talents of, in particular, senior citizens, with the resulting goods being given to children in disadvantaged communities. Founded in 2003, the Shoprite group, in conjunction with Age-inAction is once again sponsoring the Pretty Things for Little Things campaign with the guiding principle that all children are deserving of things that can help give them a happier and more fulfilling life. Run as a national competition with generous prizes, entrants are challenged to use talents to make items from any material, as long as they are practical, durable and safe. There are four categories - soft toys, blankets, clothing or other,

Mascor wins again congratulations

KZN Mina Cup champion

Zinhle Mhlongo.

Congratulations to Mascor on its outstanding achievements at the Royal Show this year in winning the Best Big Agricultural Equipment stand trophy for the fifth year running, and a gold medal. This striking display also won the Best Outdoor Stand 2016 for the first, but certainly not the last time.

Greytown water update THE level of Lake Merthley on Monday was 13.10%, and no rain predicted The Greytown Gazette, for the past three weeks, has requested information from Umvoti’s water service providers, Umzinyathi District Municipality, as well as the Department of Water Affairs about the status of the Craigieburn pipeline, however, there has been absolutely no comment or acknowledgement from them, apart

from the weekly report on the level of the lake. More than a month ago it was reported that the Craigieburn pipeline was becoming a “pipe dream” – there has been no official comment since then. The Greytown Gazette pointed out that Umvoti residents are doing their best to save water and it is in their interest to be kept informed of what is happening. Constant reports from outly-

ing areas are being received – residents being made to pay for water from tankers, borehole problems, undrinkable water, in Enahlalakhale five Jojos were “stabbed”, but have been sealed by the municipality and in Greytown one Jojo has been stolen. This is an appeal to someone out there to please inform Umvoti residents as to what plans have been made to cope with the worsening situation.

Hermannsburg Little Oaks’ Oracle “WHAT I want to be when I grow up” is an exciting theme, and is the current topic in the Kindergarten. With lots of career-related materials like dramatic play outfits, posters, books, puzzles, creative activities and games, the Little Oaks

were exposed to many different careers over the past week. They learnt about community helpers and the jobs of other professionals. Exposing children to a variety of careers at an early age can play a major role in the

direction a child’s life takes - it was very interesting to hear what the Little Oaks knew about their mom’s and dad’s careers. They shared among each other what their dream job might be one day, and there was a big variety - from fire fighter, nurse, builder and shopkeeper to policeman and farmer. So it will be interesting to see what the future holds for our Little Oaks - everything is possible. ‘When I grow up I would like to be’ … Lathitha Mbatha, Mihla Mzila, Anya du Toit, Keryn du Preez and Wynina Jansen van Vuuren.

Hermannsburg Happenings OVER the course of the past week, the Grade 10 pupils in Germany quickly adapted to the efficient public transport, which runs on time and waits for no one. They took a guided tour of the old city of Reutlingen, which dates back as far as the 11th century, before visiting the university city of Tübingen and then moving on to Metzingen where they visited the “Sieben Keltern” - a world heritage site, untouched by the bombing during World War 2, which includes a wine-pressing museum and the city library, as well as being an active marketplace. They are looking forward to the remaining two weeks of their sojourn.

Phumzile Mabaso with auctioneer Grant Goble after a successful R10 000 bid for the revamped braai drum. ON Thursday night 26 May, our Cubbies Preschool had their annual cheese and wine fund-raiser, which this year, wascombined with a fashion show. The children had to dress up as a book character and “strut their stuff” on a ramp. They were extremely confident and delighted the audience with their cute moves. They were then entertained by the matrics while their parents socialised with friends. The highlight of the evening was the auctioning of the braai. Bidding was fierce and we were overwhelmed with the generosity of the parents. The successful bid was R10 000. Phumzile and Desmond Mabaso are the proud owners of the beautifully revamped, “upcycled” drum. We would also like to thank Mr Grant Goble for being our auctioneer. On behalf of Wembley College we would like to thank the parents for a most enjoyable and successful evening. Our Book Week started off with a bang as we had the opportunity to explore books in the cultural centre with Books2U. After this the exciting Hooked on Books team made books come alive in front of eyes. We explored new cultures and countries with a young Ethiopian boy who travelled with his grandfather to Addis Ababa. Super heroes visited our phase and showed us what things are like in Superhero School. Fun was had by everyone and it was, as always, a most enjoyable morning where lovers of books could relish in the wonder of new worlds. We are very proud of the effort that went into the preparation of the book character orals. This effort ranged from the content of their orals to their outfits. The following pupils received certificates for their outstanding presentations - Tyler Diedrick, Nicola Herbst, Sinakho Madela, Yethaba Mchunu, Kelly Cotterrell, Sebastian Kruger, Bridget Dede, Leah Tedder and Amoré van Rooyen. The Grade 2 rugby boys have had an absolutely stellar season and end it off unbeaten. Well done boys for your hard work and determination throughout the season. It has been well rewarded. A big thank you to Mr Fergus Buchan (Uncle Ferg) for his influential coaching. On Friday 27 May Wembley sent the U10, U11 and U13 hockey girls and U11, U13 and U15 rugby boys to battle it out against Felixton on their home turf. All the teams did their best and an enjoyable afternoon was had by all. Once the day’s sport had come to a close, our players either went to their host families or to their accommodation with their parents. On Saturday 28 May all the hockey fixtures were played by the U10, U11, U13, U16 and Open boys’ hockey and the U10, U11, U13, U16 and Open girls’ hockey. The final two games, open girls’ and boys’ hockey, were kept for the end. After all the scores were tallied up, Felixton won the trophy 8-3.
