Spring has sprung

Water update

For many years Greytown Junior School has celebrated the arrival of spring by delivering spring flowers and pot plants to businesses, seniors and many others throughout the town not only to welcome the new season, but also to thank the community for its support.

Enough is enough community fights crime together ”ENOUGH is enough" was the message coming over loud and clear from residents of Acacia and Azalea streets and surrounds following the poisoning of pet dogs and armed robberies in the area and the noise and alcohol abuse in the open area by nonresidents who park there for hours at night. Three months ago, armed robbers, broke into a Acacia Street house, tied up the owners, grabbing jewellery, cash, cellphones, etc. They had poisoned three dogs in the houses adjacent to the one they attacked. Last Tuesday, using the same modus operandi, robbers struck again, poisoning three dogs, breaking into a house, after unsuccessfully trying to break into two other houses, grabbing what they could and fleeing. A community meeting was initiated by Field Security chief on Wednesday afternoon at Acacia Park. Umvoti Mayor Councillor Thami Ngubane and Speaker Wilson Khoza, who is the councillor for Ward 9, attended, as well as SAPS members, security personnel, Community Policing Forum representatives and the majority of residents in the area. Residents outlined their many problems in regard to security in the area and the abuse of the park to the extent that children could no longer be allowed to play there. The mayor and speaker listened to the problems as outlined and said they would immediately investigate what positive actions could be implemented by the municipality to make the area safe for all. It was agreed that there would be a report-back meeting the next day. At a get-together called by the mayor on Thursday morning with HODs, municipal officials, the speaker, police and security personnel a plan of action was drawn up. That morning a municipal grader was sent to clear the area behind Acacia Street

which had enabled criminals to access the houses, and residents said they were very pleased at this prompt response by the municipality. It is planned that the “road” cleared by the grader will be used as a residents-only access road and that street lights will be installed to make the area more secure. The mayor and his team did an on-site inspection and it was recommended that more floodlights be put up, in addition to the three already there. These have been ordered from Pretoria and are expected to be in-

stalled this week. Other security measures include an undertaking from the local SAPS to have more frequent vehicle patrols. The community again got together on the Thursday afternoon for a report-back meeting and were very appreciative of the prompt action put into operation by the mayor through the municipality. At this meeting it was also agreed to form a “neighbourhood watch” so they could work together to ensure a safe and secure life for all.

ALTHOUGH spring is here the much-awaited spring rains are still to come - here's hoping… Lake Merthley now stands at 15.69% full. The Greytown Gazette requested an update from Umzinyathi Municipality following the statement at the public meeting in July by Umzinyathi Municipal Manager and Umvoti that three Craigieburn pipeline contractors would be fired and replaced in the hope that the pipeline would be up and running by the end of the year. In reply the Umzinyathi spokesperson said new contractors had not been appointed, but "the municipality is in the process of appointing". There has no been response to the Greytown Gazette's request for a timeline. It is vital for all Umvoti residents to continue their positive response to saving water. The latest report from the SA Weather Bureau predicts that La Niña will be weaker than expected and the rains would come much later in the year.

Seven Oaks plane crash, 76 years ago LAST week the Greytown Gazette received an email from a Mr A. Doyle in London querying whether it was possible to check on a plane crash which occurred in Seven Oaks in August 1940 in which three men were killed. According to him two airmen, Squadron Leader Dunlop and Flight Lieutenant James who had been based in what was

then Southern Rhodesia had belonged to the Empire Air Training scheme – the third was a Captain Adams, an army officer of the West African regiment. This interesting, and probably now not well known bit of Umvoti history was reported upon in the Greytown Gazette of Friday 29 August, 1940 as follows: “The three occupants of a mil-

itary aeroplane were killed instantly when it crashed into a wattle plantation owned by Mr C.J.J. Crowe a few miles from Seven Oaks between 8.30am and 9am on Wednesday morning.” There was a heavy low lying mist at the time and from about 8.30am residents heard a plane flying low and circling for some

September birth flower

Asters come in a variety of colours including red, white, orange and various shades of pink and purple. SEPTEMBER’S birth flower, asters, come in a variety of colours including red, white, orange and various shades of pink and purple.

Ancient Greeks named the aster after the Greek word (astér), meaning star. A popular myth attributes the origin of the aster to the

Greek god Virgo who was saddened by the lack of stars in the sky - upset, Virgo began to cry. As she cried lovely aster flowers began to grow on each spot where her tears landed. During the Victorian era, asters became very popular. Victorians were fascinated by floriography - the language of flowers - and would use the colour, type and arrangement of various flowers to send secret coded messages to one another. Asters conveyed feelings of love, devotion and daintiness and are associated with the qualities of faith, wisdom and valour. At one time, it was believed that burning asters would provide protection against snakes.

Martens and Sharp reported that the sound of the engine stopped for a moment and a few seconds later a terrific crash was heard. Both these gentlemen “dashed in the direction of the sound and discovered the machine in a plantation”. The plane had crashed through the trees em-

bedding the engine in the grounds and was ”smashed to matchwood”. Plane parts and personal belongings were scattered over a wide area. The three are buried in the Pioneer Cemetry in Harare. Evidently during World War II a total of 182 pilots belonging to the Empire Air School were killed. According to Rupert Crowe, Seven Oaks, the Zulu name for the farm where the crash occurred was Banoyi (aeroplane).

THE Greytown Child and Youth Care Centre’s popular fund-raiser, the Farmers’ Market, takes place this Saturday at the Beehive from 9am to 2pm. On sale will be meat,

cheese, vegetables, plants, home baking, jams and handcrafts, etc. Stalls cost R100, for more information or to book a stall, contact Sue on 072 827 2483.

Is Umvoti running short of refuse? Sir, AM totally confused and hope that you, municipal officials or one of your readers, can assist me. Like most Greytonians I was hand-delivered a municipal document a couple of weeks ago titled "Application for refuse collection”. But the first page is headed NB: all applications for refuse supply must be accompanied by compulsory documents including certified copy of will and/ trust deed, original ID, and so on. Does this mean that Umvoti Municipality is running short of refuse and is looking

for a supply? Then on pages 2 and 3 "Refuse, supply application form”, but suddenly it is all about an agreement in respect of the supply of electricity. Here again information required is listed including proof if married by antenuptial contract, what your spouse does, the number of children, vehicle make, etc., etc. Page 4 is an acknowledgment of "indebtedness" refuse. This requires agreement to settle 50% of monies tendered for the purchase of refuse will be used to settle the arrears and 50% of the amount will be provided me refuse." (Can anyone explain exactly what this means.)

Confusion continues to flourish - point 4 of this acknowledgment threatens that if there is an outstanding amount "I will not be able to purchase any electricity", but point 5 informs me that if the current account is not paid monthly "I will not be able to purchase refuse." Please could the new council institute a monitoring system to ensure that documents that are sent out in the name of the municipality make sense. And can the council explain to the recipients of this document why Umvoti Municipality now needs a supply of refuse. Thank you. Totally confused citizen

ence was spoilt for choice with a variety of soups such as sweet potato and apple, cream of tomato, potato and leak and butternut. These were accompanied by rolls and red wine. The selling of the soup and rolls brought in funds for our school’s library. This year Wembley is keeping up with the theme of recycling and keeping our Earth clean. This theme trickled down into our evening’s décor, with our rustic table settings and brown and green colour scheme. There were also the trees from the SP play that were used to brighten the stage. Along with the various acts, the night would never have been such a success if it wasn’t for Mrs Swart who helped with the décor and Mrs Van Rooyen and Ms Woolahan who helped with the selection

of the programme. A big thank you to Mrs Schneider and Mrs Yeadon for organising the wonderful soup, wine and rolls. Without all of your input and ideas the Culture Commotion would not have made such an impact. We want to express our sincere gratitude to Mr Kevin Diedrick for not only fixing, but rebuilding many of the chess pieces. They were purchased more than 15 years ago and were in dire need of a good revamp. Mr Diedrick supplied all the labour and materials, free of charge. They are now in stronger and better shape than when purchased. Thank you. Thank you to Mr Dieter Meyer and the PA committee for an excellent golf day that took place on Saturday 27 August at the country club. Thank you to the sponsors and golfers who supported this event - we really appreciate it.

Appreciative Wembley chess players collected the outdoor chess pieces, which had been refurbished by Kevin Diedrick for the school.

Hermannsburg Little Oaks’ Oracle SPRING is in the air. Taking a walk around our beautiful school campus and looking for signs of spring was a very exciting exercise for some of our Little Oaks last week, who realised how amazing nature is as they discovered buds and blossoms on trees and bushes or saw bees and birds flying from flower to flower. At the same time another group made beautiful butterflies and learnt all about static electricity - the buildup of an electrical charge on the surface of an object, called static, because the charges remain in one place for a while rather than moving or flowing to another place. Our Little Oaks rubbed balloons on their hair so the butterflies would stick to the balloons - cool.

Little Oaks Andrea Townsend, Akira Chetty and Mikeala Königkrämer investigate the wonderful world of flowers on the Hermannsburg campus.

New Hanover Prep School news SCHOOL trips are a powerful and positive teaching tool that helps to enhance the social, personal and emotional development of pupils at New Hanover Prep School. Extra stimulation in new environments can be particularly beneficial and can help teach life skills and improve independence. Grade 3 pupils learnt a great deal about animals at Tala Game Reserve during their game drive, including giraffe, rhino, zebra, antelope, wildebeest and hippos.

They also studied a variety of insects and went on an insect hunt. They enjoyed a nature treasure hunt around the reserve discovering interesting information about feathers, quills, snake skin, skulls, snail shells and other interesting items. School trips certainly provide unique opportunities for kinaesthetic learning i.e. learning by doing. Hands-on learning activities outside the classroom lead to better achievement, standards, motivation and behaviour.

Junior Jottings SPRING has sprung once again at Greytown Junior School. It is a much anticipated and much appreciated tradition that in the first week of September every year spring is celebrated with beautiful spring flowers. The pot plants are delivered to businesses, senior citizens, the library and many others throughout the town, not only as a welcome to spring, but as a thank you to all those who support the school.

7 September 2016 This year the Grade 5e class with teacher Mr W. Aziz organised a spring day display and explained the importance of plants and animals in our lives. A special thank you to Mrs Sheryl Beckett and staff at RTS Greytown and to Mr Meloshan Moodley for their contribution. On Saturday 3 September athletics team travelled to Deutsche Schule Hermannsburg to participate in the annual Umvoti Athletics meeting, in which four school participated with athletes from seven to 13 taking part. The level of competition and

good sportsmanship ensured a day that was enjoyed by all. A number of our athletes did exceptionally well, receiving first and second places and a few records were also broken. Nthando Makhaye received the victor ludorum and the winning house was Greytown Junior School with 365 points. Greytown Junior School thank Deutsche Schule Hermannsburg for organising such a wonderful meeting and also to our athletes for doing so well. - Mr A. Stanczyk.

St David’s Doings

The Grade 3 pupils return from their game drive around Tala Game Reserve.

ST David’s were undefeated at Wembley College last Tuesday. Owethu Ngubo scored the only goal in the U11 game. St David’s won the Open game 2-1 with Nkosinathi Ngubane and Owethu Ngubo finding the net. A big thank you to Mr Fisher for organising the games, fetching the boys and providing the treats.
