Murderformoney

bail application protest

A few of the protestors from Matimatolo holding posters stating that bail must be granted in the murderformoney trial. THE bail applications by the five accused of murdering three people to claim their insurance will continue again in the Greytown Magistrate’s Court on Thursday as it was not finalised at the second hearing last Friday.

The bail hearings have been marked by a handful of protestors from Matimatolo holding placards claiming that bail must be granted that the five are innocent and “they know who the killers are”. The five are being charged

with murder and attempted murder following the death of Mzohuhle Zuma, who it is alleged, was drugged then run over by a vehicle as was the second victim Sonasokhe Mdlalose. The third victim survived two attempts to kill her and a fourth

was shot dead. The State claims that insurance policies had been taken out on the victims with the names of three of the female accused listed as beneficiaries and that some policies had been paid out.

Cellphone at crime scene leads to 15 year imprisonment ONE of two would-be armed robbers left his cellphone at the scene of the crime and this led to the prompt arrest of both the would be robbers. Greytown Regional Magistrate, Mr C.J. Masikane sentenced the two, Mjabulo Dlomo and Nkosinathi Majola to 15 years imprisonment on charges of attempted robbery; possession of firearm and possession of 5 rounds of ammunition - the pair pleaded not guilty to the charges. In handing down sentence on 29 November the magistrate stated that all three counts had been taken together for the purposes of sentencing. The charges relate to an incident two years ago on 17 July 2014 when the two accused were looking for a lift to Nseleni and Mr Kennth Msimanga offered to take them. However near St Cathryn’s both produced firearms, demanded money and the car. Mr Msimanga refused to stop the car. A struggle followed during which two shots were fired in the vehicle which then left the road and overturned. The two accused fled the scene. One of the accused left his cellphone in the car, which led to the arrest of the two. In sentencing the two, Magistrate Mr Masikane stressed the seriousness of the offences and the fact that neither of the accused showed any remorse in robbing a Good Samaritan who had kindly and freely offered them a lift in his month old new vehicle.

way to go. The Cragieburn pipeline now definitely qualifies as the “pipe dream” of 2016. Residents might recall that several months ago, at a special water meeting called by Umzinyathi and Umvoti, the municipal manager of the

Important Neighbourhood Watch meeting OVER the past few weeks there has been an increase in house break-ins throughout the town, but thanks to the recent formation of four Neighbourhood Watch groups in sections of the town, residents have become far more aware of security, the need to look out for suspicious activities, vehicles and individuals and to report these on WhatsApp and to their respective security company. This has meant the certain prevention of a number of crimi-

nal incidents. Neighbourhood Watch 4, covering the area from Shepstone Street and Louis Botha Avenue through to Durban Street (up to the corner of Durban and Thomas Handley), is to be formed at a meeting to be held on Thursday 9 December at 6pm in the Pannar lounge at Greytown Country Club. It is in the interest of all residents living in this section to attend this meeting - the other sections are operating well and efficiently.

WHAT’S ON THIS WEEK Let’s get boxing

‘No’ to violence against women and children THE Kranskop SAPS and Correctional Services are organising a “no violence against women and children” event in Kranskop on Friday 9 December at 9am at the Kranskop town hall. Other role players who will take part in this event include NGOs, the Departments of Social Development, Justice, Health, community leaders and

others. A march will be held starting from the hall through the town after which there is a full programme of activities and the public is invited to take part in this important joint event. For more information, contact Miss Samke Khoza (correctional officer) on 083 427 3958 or Sergeant Ndwandwe, Kranskop SAPS on 082 823 9005.

IMAGINE what it would like it on your first day at school or back to school and you did not have all the items other pupils had. Dulcie Jacobz is determined that pupils from Greytown Youth and Child Centre will have what they need. "Let's got boxing" is a project to collect lunch boxes and goodies, such as chips, sweets, etc., to go into them to donate to the youngsters. Dulcie is appealing to the generous Greytown community to donate these lunch boxes that will be given to the children when they return to school in the new year. Lunch boxes and goodies can be dropped off at 168 Voortrekker Street, NCT - Dulcie Brown Jacobsz (082 437 5195) or at Greytown Drug Store.

Greytown Child Welfare fundraiser THERE will be lots of activities in the community hall this Saturday from 10am to 3pm as the Greytown Child Welfare fund-raising event takes place. There will be a variety of food on sale, garden produce, cakes, savoury items, and more. The main focus will be the sale of second-hand clothing and household items and equipment. Anyone who wants to donate clothing or other items they no longer

use, is asked to phone the welfare office on 033 413 3174 to make arrangements for the collection of goods. Greytown Child and Family Welfare does strong and positive community work throughout the year assisting those in need. It also runs the pre-school, Greycrèche, so the support of the community in donating goods and supporting the event will be greatly appreciated.

Whiskers and Wagtail jumble sale WATCH out for the balloons this Saturday at 220 Durban Street where a jumble sale will start at 9.30am at the Umvoti Animal Hospital.

This is to raise funds for the Whiskers and Wagtail project for assistance to animals in need. A wide range of items - secondhand clothing, books, household

equipment, etc., is on sale. Anyone who would like to donate items to this worthwhile project is asked to drop these off during the week.

Neglected disabled need a skills centre

Some of the disabled people who desperately need a skills centre.and electronic wheelchairs. “IT is very hard to wake up in the morning, have nothing to do all day - all you can do is wait for the dark so you can go back to bed again.” Imagine having to spend each and every day sitting in a wheelchair with no activities or stimulus. Sadly this is the lifestyle of many of the disabled people, living in the rural areas. Last month the SA National Taxi Association (Santaco) and Zimbambeleni Community Development Organisation from Muden visited Gujini, a rural underdeveloped community about

10kms from Muden. The village is in the Mhlangane area where there is a clinic and a school. They went to visit 42-year-old Bhekisile Mkhize who was born without arms and legs and lives in a house that is not at all geared to her needs. She has a wheelchair, but is in need of an electronic wheelchair for basic daily living requirements. In a visit to her home Santaco and Zimbambeleni personnel expressed their shock and dismay at her circumstances. Notwithstanding the fact that

Bhekisile does not have hands and legs, she does beadwork such as traditional necklace pieces, which brings in a small income. She lives a difficult life, and is in real need of assistance, more specifically an electronic wheelchair that she can operate herself without assistance. The two groups said after their visit they met many people with disabilities who ended up losing hope in terms of improving their lives for the better, because of the shortage of facilities such as schools for disabled peo-

ple, and user friendly facilities in their homes. Santaco and Zimbambeleni personnel later in the month took along the relevant state authorities. In that community alone there are 18-plus disabled people in need of assistance and a skills centre which would enable them to be taught various skills so they would something to occupy their time and be able to earn money. How to protect your home WHILE many homeowners install some kind of a security system, it is vital they be more watchful to guarantee they do not fall victim to burglars. Most home robberies happen while the house is unattended, or the homeowners are at work. It is therefore essential that homeowners execute proper security measures to help reduce the chances of becoming a victim to a home break-in or other risk factors, particularly if they are going away. Neighbourhood Watch recommends the following tips for homeowners to ensure that their belongings are secure against thefts and other insurance risk factors: • Keep alarm system updates

and in working order. An inactive alarm system feature as one of the main reasons why criminals are able to enter a home undetected. It is essential that homeowners test their alarm system regularly by activating it and checking if the batteries work if the power goes off. • It is absolutely imperative that alarm systems are initiated whenever going out, or going to bed. Ensure burglar gates are locked. Homeowners should install burglar bars on their windows to guarantee that thieves are not able to enter the house through any of them. • Whenever homeowners go out they must make sure that all

entries, windows and burglar gates are shut and locked. • Change your schedule. It is a good idea to change your exit and return schedules. The use of automatic gate entrances will also guarantee that homeowners do not have to leave the safety of their vehicle in order to access the premises. When leaving the home, or getting out of the vehicle, it is important to wait until the gate is completely closed and you know that it is safe to exit. • Don’t ignore your barking dog or dogs. if you have a dog it is imperative that you take note and action when they bark endlessly, or behave in a strange way. Pets, for the most part, respond differently around new

individuals they do not trust. Therefore, it is important that homeowners always check why the dog is barking, as this could be that they are attempting to alarm you to possible criminal activity. • Get to know your neighbour. The best home security comes from neighbours who look out for one another. Make it a point to meet them so you can ask them to keep an eye on things while you're away, even it is for a few hours. Exchange your contact numbers. • Get involved with your Neighbourhood Watch because it is not only about keeping your possessions safe, but your family as well.

Mob seriously beat suspected thief FOR the past two weeks social media has been buzzing with reports of babies or toddlers being kidnapped. In Greytown rumours were circulating on a daily basis of a baby being snatched at each of the town's supermarkets as well in the outlying rural areas. These rumours reached crisis point early last Friday afternoon when a man allegedly tried to rob a woman in a Durban Street store - the woman did have a young child with her. Because of this someone started shouting that the thief was trying to kidnap the youngster. Members of the crowd grabbed the man and started to beat him up so severely that he had to be hospitalised. Because of the intensity of the crowd, the store closed its doors until the people had calmed down. There was a large police presence as well as local security personnel. Two urgent appeals have been made by the police and security firms to stop spreading rumours - there was one case of kidnapping in Durban several weeks ago. Police sources say no such cases have been reported in Umvoti. The second appeal is to members of the public not to take the law into their own hands as was done on Friday, but allow the police and security firms to handle and control the situation.

Hermannsburg Happenings THE Children-Helping-Children is our primary school outreach programme, where we support the children from the Umvoti Aids Centre by giving them gifts three times a year. The aim of this programme is to develop awareness and to encourage the children to give to those less fortunate than ourselves. With the teachers facilitating this endeavour, the children are encouraged to buy something with their pocket money or to do chores at home to earn the money so that in this way the children themselves are giving to other children. This year the children have enjoyed collecting stationery, canned food, toothpaste and tooth brushes, and we hope these gifts from the children brought smiles to other children who are not as privileged. Our primary school “Class of 2016” - the Grade 7 pupils - donated a hexagon plastic recycled table-cum-bench to our primary school for the other pupils to enjoy in the years to come. We are very grateful for this lovely gift, and are looking forward to many break times sitting at this bench, enjoying the

shade of the trees and the view over our school dam. Thank you so much, Grade 7s of 2016. The primary school and Little Oaks Kindergarten have also been collecting milk bottles and any HDPE 2 plastic items. Once we have collected 450kg of this type of plastic, the school will receive a two-seater bench made of sturdy recycled plastic. Families, neighbours and friends have been roped in by our pupils, and the teachers kept tabs on which pupil collected the most bottles in each grade, with prizes for the three pupils who collected the most each month. We have made a huge difference in our environment as we are an eco school, and a big thank you goes to every pupil, parent, grandparent and friend of the school who contributed. We will carry on with this as there are now some high school pupils who have taken it upon themselves to continue with this project. Last week we held our awards ceremonies as the school year reached its conclusion. Watch this space next week for news about the ceremonies.

Window on Wembley ON Thursday 24 November the JP Phase celebrated the "Moving On" of our Grade R and Grade 3 children. The Aloe Hall was filled with proud parents, many with a tear in their eye as they commemorated the end of this stage of their children's school career. We are so proud of the Grade 3s and wish them well on their next journey. Along with this, we would like to officially welcome the Grade Rs to "big school". The excitement was palpable on Friday 25 November. It was show time for the pre-school. After weeks of rehearsing it was finally time for the concert. Dancing sheep, rapping Humpty Dumpties, reindeer doing the "Reindeer Pokey" and blind mice dancing to Sunshine in my Pocket

entertained the appreciative audience. The Grade RR girls had everyone in awe with their "star" dance. It was a happy concert and parents, as well as teachers, were very proud of the children's acting abilities. Thank you to all the parents who supported it. A huge thank you to Mrs Renate Hiestermann, who put in so many extra hours to write our concert script, and to help our children with the singing. We bid a very sad farewell to Miss Amy Woolahan, who will be leaving us at the end of the year. Miss Woolahan joined us at the beginning of 2014 in the English department. Her cheerful nature was a welcome addition to the staff. She has served with enthusiasm wherever she has been planted and we are extremely grateful to her for her input.

Grade R graduation and Grade 3 farewell. This year she has been our Grade 5 teacher and we know that her heart is with high school pupils so we will let her go to the “bright lights” to find new adventures. Good luck and we will miss you. It is also with sad hearts that we say goodbye to Miss Monique van

de Merwe. She has been an integral part of the Foundation Phase for the past four years. We have grown dependent on her capable skills during her “learnership” with us. Studying to become a senior primary-trained teacher did not hin-

der her in any way as she become well loved across the board. Fortunately, she will not be far away next year, as she is heading to the SP Phase. We wish her well in her new adventures and hope she pops in regularly for visits.

poachers and the policemen all designed their own costumes very effectively. The stage props were minimalist - a rock, aloes, tree aloes and a magical fire made from fairy lights. Pupils not only learnt about characterisation, movement, and voice during their weekly drama lessons, they also learnt about how

the African elephant is endangered due to illegal ivory trade. There are fewer than 400 000 African elephants left and one is lost every 15 minutes to ivory poaching. Experts have indicated that this majestic animal will be extinct by 2030 if we don't do something about it. - Louise Yeadon.

Helping to save elephants THE final Grade 7 prize giving at St David's took on a new dimension this year. The theatrical piece was an adaptation of Alexandra McCall Smith's novel, Akimbo. Akimbo is a game ranger's son who grows up in a game reserve. On one of his many adventures, he goes with his father and a ranger to try and track down poachers,

who are trying to kill a bull elephant for his tusks. The climax of the piece is when Akimbo stands between the bull elephant and the poachers, warning the elephant of the poachers' presence. Too scared to shoot the boy, the poachers are found and arrested by the rangers.

The Grade 7 class did a wonderful job of taking on the different roles in the play. The elephants were designed and made out of cardboard boxes and grey blankets. They slowly trudged across the stage, lifting up their trunks to sniff the air occasionally. Akimbo, his father, the ranger,

From the Foothills HISTORY was made at Greytown Primary School on 26 November when the school’s first Grade R graduation took place. The graduation celebration was a heartwarming function as Grade R pupils entertained parents with renditions of poetry and song. The function was well attended by parents and well-wishers. On 30 November Greytown Primary School held a successful awards evening at Greytown Town Hall. The school choir, led by Mrs Z.L. Myaka, entertained the audience throughout the evening. The annual report highlighting the achievements of the school was presented by the principal, Mr. J.

Moonsamy. Besides an exceptionally successful academic year, extra and co-curricular achievements of the pupils were also recognised. Pupils participated in the Astro Quiz, Spelling Bee, language competition and athletics both at district and provincial levels, bringing many accolades to the school. The chairperson of the School Governing Body, Mr B Madonsela in his address indicated that the parents were extremely happy that pupils were holistically developed at Greytown Primary School. The keynote speaker was the Chief Education Specialist Miss

Reader’s write Khayalami Christmas fund Sir, THE presents have been beautifully wrapped by Santa’s little helper, Deante Swart. All the gifts are now ready to be given to children at Khayalami Orphanage. I would like to thank every person who contributed towards this worthy cause. Generosity is the most admirable human quality. This year there was some money left over once all the presents had been brought.

This money will be given to the 11 house mothers and two gardeners who work at Khayalami, ensuring that the children and grounds are looked after throughout the year. Thank you for opening your hearts and donating towards the Khayalami Christmas fund. I hope you and your families have a joyful Christmas and peaceful New Year. Louise and Michael Yeadon

Wembley College head explains Sir, ON Monday 28 November, Wembley College staged their annual carol service. At the end there was a fireworks display that had been sponsored. We had advertised the fireworks on all of our posters and in all of our newsletters. Prior to staging it, we had consulted the Pietermarizburg SAPS for the licence. We had the fireworks display in the furthermost corner of our property in respect to the town. It kicked off our 20- year anniversary celebrations and lent a certain carnival atmosphere to our end-of-year celebrations. It was incredibly spectacular and the entire show lasted eight-and-a-half minutes. For many it was seen as a reward for hard work that had been put in during

the year by both the pupils and teachers. The pleasure and wonder on the faces of the children and adults of our school was something special to behold. It has come to our attention that some members of the community were very upset about their pets and we do apologise to them. It had never been our intention to upset or harm anyone or their pets. We continue to try and give the best service to the Greytown community and are committed to the future and wellbeing of the town. We would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone in the Umvoti district a blessed Christmas and a prosperous new year. Dederick Swart Wembley College Principal

From the Courts ON Sunday 4t December the Greytown Tennis Club hosted their annual Roley Hill Men’s doubles tennis tournament. The tournament has become a firm favourite for out of town players, who made up the majority of the field, with local players having to raise their games to compete with the influx of strong players. The overall standard of tennis was very high and made for some exciting viewing for spectators. The A Division was an extremely close affair with Gareth and Brett Arnold finally pipping Derek Brown and Clint Cotton at the post to take the trophy.

Book briefs The Magic of Public Speaking - A Complete System to become a World Class Speaker Author: Andrii Sedniev The older I get, the more I realise that any skill is attainable with practice and the right teacher. Public speaking is no exception. Though it’s more terrifying for some than death (look it up), many have proven that it can be mastered with time and effort. In this short yet invaluable read, Sedniev studies hundreds of public speakers, from politicians to stand-up comedians, and reveals the common traits among them in a quickly-digestible and entertaining format. Learn why some passages look good on paper yet don’t translate well when read in front of an audience. Understand the power of storytelling and the numerous ways you can convey emotions, and know how to have your audience on the edge of their seats instead of wondering when you’re going to be charitable enough to get to the point. Even if you don’t plan on taking up public speaking as a career, this is a helpful tool to elevate you from a cringe-worthy conundrum to an overnight average, ensuring that you are swiftly forgotten at the next family wedding instead of being remembered for all the wrong reasons. Author: Blake Crouch In Dark Matter, Crouch (author of The Wayward Pines trilogy) takes cutting-edge science and wields it into a warm and thought-provoking story. There’s a reason why many are calling it the best science-fiction novel since Andy Weir’s 2011 breakout hit The Martian. If that’s enough to make you want to read it, turn away from the next paragraph. The book reads better if you have no idea what you’re getting yourself into. For those who need a little more motivation: What if you created a device that could introduce you to every possible version of yourself on an infinite number of worlds? Who would you be today if you had made different choices? Does happiness come from success, relationships, or a mixture of both? And, what if the only thing standing between you and your perfect life was murdering a copy of yourself? With his latest effort Crouch has made the shortlist of authors I’ll be keeping a close eye on. Yes, the book suffers from a pet peeve of mine found in many thrillers ("we need to get from A to B before giving you more of the plot"), but there's more going on here than your average mystery. If you have nothing else to read this month, this one is worth a look. - Omar Sayed.
