Brutal farm murder teens appear in court TWO teenagers appeared in the Greytown Magistrate’s Court Monday on charges relating to the murder of Sarel Theron at his home on Mistley Estate Seven Oaks last Sunday night, 3 July. Theron, who was Mondi Midands Safety Facilitator, was found badly beaten, stabbed and strangled last Tuesday morning by a colleague who had become concerned when he had not reported for work on the Monday. It is alleged that at least three attackers were involved – a laptop, cellphone and other items had been stolen. The attackers had attempted to force the safe out of a wall by using one of two vehicles there to ram the safe loose, but were unsuc-
cessful. In a joint operation launched by Field Security and Greytown SAPS members - Sergeant Mkhebela, Constable Mkhize Warrant Officer Mlambo and Nkosinathi Zuma, two of the

Multimillionrand boost for Msinga
THOSE boxes, plastic trays, odd bits of cutlery, and so on, it is amazing how they pile up and then you ask what to do with them all. The answer “don’t dump, donate”. Its amazing how so-called junk can be used in so many positive forms Many people chuck out useful items, or do not know what to do with things they no longer use - but there is always a use for everything, maybe not in your home, but in the next home. Dulcie Jacobz has set up a distribution system for a range of projects in Greytown. Items required include clothing, linen, pillows, blankets, curtains, kitchen items, crockery, cutlery, plastic ware, second-hand clothing, shoes, toys, books, sports items, puzzles, empty ice cream containers etc., as well as toiletries, soap, toilet soap, toothpaste, tooth brushes, old handbags, tog bags and so on. If you have items, which you do not know if they are suitable, phone Dulcie for information, and also for delivery details. Projects that will benefit from this initiative include Arcadia, Letcee, Greytown Child and Youth Centre, Khayalami, rape victims, uBuhle Bomvoti Special School and Umvoti Aids Centre. This is a “one-man project”, items come in slowly, and parcels handed over may be small, but every little bit helps. If you can help in any way, contact Dulcie on 082 437 5195 after hours to arrange dropoff or collection points.

PLANS for two major bridges and a main road upgrade to link Weenen and Tugela Ferry were announced by KZN MEC for Transport, Mxolisius Kaunda, last Tuesday. Cost of this boost for the area is R905 million. The new infrastructures will enable Msinga communities to easily reach important amenities such as clinics, schools, public transport facilities and shopping facilities once completed. A state-of-the-art double-carriage weigh bridge (R97 million) will replace the one-at-a-time steel bridge which is now a heritage site. The old bridge will become a pedestrian crossing. Traffic will also improve because of upgrades to tar of the intersecting main roads P6 and P280, connecting uMsinga to Greytown, Dundee, Ladysmith and Pietermaritzburg as well as the national N3 route. Kaunda, accompanied by uMzinyathi District mayor, Cllr Linda Ngubane, launched the con-
struction of eMahlaba Bridge, which will cost an estimated R13 million. This bridge was requested by the community in 2012 when eight members of a community crime-fighting organisation (IsiKebhe) were ambushed while searching for their stolen livestock. In all the three projects, more than 1 019 job opportunities will be created for the locals, mainly woman and the youth. Addressing the people of Greater uMsinga, Kaunda said: “The investment of R905 million in three projects will improve the economy of this district, which will also receive an additional R311 million in the 2016/17 financial year. The construction of Tugela Bridge will open up access and economic trade between uMzinyathi District and other strategic key points in the province. Young people and women will benefit in skills training and job opportunities through these infrastructure projects.”

District champions in musical poetry (from left) Nosihle Mthembu, Noxolo Ximba, Andiswa Buthelezi, Sanelisiwe Ximba and Ziyanda Mkhize (not in the photo). Congratulations to Indlovana Primary Musical Poetry group on being district champions following their win in Dundee recently. Their poem, Akucwasi ukucwasa, which means discrimination does not discriminate, was well received by the audience who kept clapping and dancing along as it was recited. The school’s language festival convenor Mr HW Xulu said they had
to sit down with pupils and evaluate their performance at circuit level. This resulted in changing the performance completely. “This victory is due to pupils’ dedication and the guidance that Mr SB Mthembu and other teachers afforded the group.” He said it will be the first time Indlovana represent the district in the provincial language festival competition to be held in Durban on 17 August.
TOTALLY committed to helping the community Greytown’s water monitor Mzamo Lembethe has been appointed by AB Projects to assist Greytown residents at the street Jojo tanks. Mzamo will check the tanks daily and will also chat to users about the water supply problems faced and the importance of allowing residents in need of water to have access to the tanks in their area. Mzamo has an impressive record of voluntary work in communities in Matimatolo, where he grew up, and other areas. His abilities have been recognised by Cogta, among other organisations, since he matriculated at Elsie Mtshali. Mzamo has a number of social development courses to his credit and was previously involved in various aspects of social work and security. Greytown water committee member Brian Walker has spent several days training Mzamo on the Jojo tanks’ usage to ensure they are kept filled, that there is no vandalisation and all concerned get their fair share of water. Mzamo is a firm believer in the importance of educating and communicating the reasons behind the need to save water, and told the Greytown Gazette that he regards this opportunity to serve as a water monitor as a calling more than a job, to be able to assist people.

COUNCILLOR Paul Buss, who has represented the DA as a PR councillor for the past 10 years, issued a statement to the Greytown Gazette as follows: “I have withdrawn my candidature as a councillor in Umvoti for the 3 August 2016 local elections. The DA was informed of this decision on 22 June. Due to what I think are unattainable and unrealistic expectations of me by the DA, with the very limited active support I get from the community, I feel that it is time that I withdraw from politics.”

Top trail star CONGRATULATIONS to Rory Scheffer on fulfilling one of his dreams in great style. Rory took up trail running four years ago while at the University of Port Elizabeth. Having done exceptionally well on the South African scene, Rory set his sights on the international scene Taking part in the prestigious Kilian Classic in the French Pyrenees, he came third in a field of 350 made up mainly of professional athletes and top runners in Europe. Rory was just two minutes behind the winner. The top Salomon team leader, an Olympic tri-athlete came second, and Rory third. He said he had to push himself really hard to achieve this outstanding result. The trail took the runners up and down 45kms of rough mountain tracks, rocky trails and snow covered peaks. The race starts in the village of Font Remeu, known
Page 3
as the trail running mecca of Europe and features some of the world’s best trails. The philosophy of the famous Kilian Classic is that of the ultimate trail race for trail and nature lovers. There is also a slightly less challenging 25km trail the following day. A determined Rory covered his own costs and flew over a week before the race to acclimatise himself to the terrain and environment. Rory is also well known in the South African trail running world. He is the defending champion of the Giants Cup trail, which he has won two years in a row. This three-day trail starts at Sani Pass and finishes at Bushmans Neck. He has taken part in a number of trail events in the Cape and regularly finishes in the top three. Son of Amanda and Roger Scheffer (Roger heads Buffalo Security in Umvoti), Rory did his early schooling at Hermannsburg and Wartburg prior to completing his schooling in Port Elizabeth.

67 Minutes for Mandela MANDELA Day is celebrated on Monday 18 July - Nelson Mandela's birthday - and it was during his 90th birthday celebrations in London's Hyde Park that he said he would be honoured if such a day could serve to bring together people around the world to fight poverty as well as promote peace and reconciliation. The United Nations officially declared 18 July Nelson Mandela International Day in November 2009, recognising Mandela's "values and his dedication to the service of humanity" and acknowledging his contribution to the struggle for democracy internationally and the promotion of a culture of peace throughout the world. The international appeal is for people throughout the world to celebrate this day by carrying out actions based on the idea that every person has the power to change the world for the better. Mandela spent 67 years making the world a better place - people of the world are asked for 67 minutes on that day. Mandela's 67 years of service to humankind began in 1942 when he
started to campaign for the human rights of every South African. Well-known journalist Ferial Haffajee wrote in June 2013: "As we begin the long clamber up his shoulders to work out how we complete the long walk to freedom, Mandela has shown us how. It is ours to do, to serve, to give and to complete the work of freedom." Some words of wisdom from Madiba: “It always seems impossible until its done.” “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” “For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” “There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountaintop of
our desires.” “Money won't create success, the freedom to make it will.” “People respond in accordance to how you relate to them. If you approach them on the basis of violence, that's how they'll react. But if you say, 'We want peace, we want stability,' we can then do a lot of things that will contribute towards the progress of our society.”
Hermannsburg Hermannsburg Little Oaks’ Happenings Oracle A VISIT to the Hermannsburg library was an exciting experience for all our Little Oaks at the end of last term. The librarian, Mrs Risch, showed them around and explained about the different kinds of books one finds in a library - big, small, fat and thin books on all sorts of topics. They learnt how to turn the page of a book correctly, that their hands should be clean and that one is not allowed to eat or drink when looking at a book. The visit ended with Mrs Risch reading a story to the Little Oaks.

Karl Bartels (right) receives his Venter trailer from K. Olivier, having won the first of the two Germany Exchange Programme raffles. A WEEK of workshops and practicing brought over 120 choristers from all corners of our country together. The concert at the Lutheran church in Greytown on Saturday and the church service at Hermannsburg on Sunday were well worth attending as the annual Schützwoche (originally instituted in the 1960s to celebrate the famous 17th century German composer, Heinrich Schütz) came to its close this year. Our Grade 9 class raised funds for their trip to Germany next year by preparing the meals for the participants. Two raffles also made up part of this year’s drive to raise funds for
the Germany Exchange Programme, with tickets being sold during the run-up to the 160th Jubilee Schulfest. The first raffle was won by K. Bartels (Greytown), who took delivery of a new Venter trailer. The runner-up prize of two jackets, sponsored by Mascor, was won by D. Corbishley (Greytown). The second raffle, for a weekend away at Springbok Lodge, was won by S. Hechter (Greytown) and the R500 runner-up cash voucher went to P. Bunge (Pietermaritzburg). Thank you to our generous sponsors and to everybody who supported this fund-raising drive by buying tickets.

SPORT NEWS DLicence coaching course success ANOTHER successful D-Licence coaching course was held at Msinga Umzisho sports field from 26 to 30 June reports the organiser Mr M.J. Ngubane. Mr Ngubane is head coach, a qualified instructor, and Safa Umzinyathi deputy president and is part of the force driving football in the region. There were 21 participants from Zululand, eThekwini, Nquthu, Misinga, but Mr Ngubane said no one attended from Endudemi and Umvoti and there were no women participants.
