Umshwathi leaders condemn protestors’ rampage

The Umshwati Municipal building that was destroyed by Ward 2 protestors. DAMAGE estimated at R10 million, when a group of Umshwati Ward 2 residents went on the rampage, was loudly condemned by Umshwati and provincial officials last week. On Monday night Ward 2 protestors burnt the municipal offices in New Hanover and then moved to the Department of Transport

offices where they set fire to a water truck, bakkie and TLB tractor. The group then moved to the Department of Social Development where they destroyed three government vehicles. Sibusiso Mkhithi Umshwati Communications Manager, Sibusiso Mkhiti told the Greytown

Five life sentences for ‘monster’ rapist A TRADITIONAL healer, who used his status in the community to rape and abuse four teenagers, was sentenced to five life sentences plus 10 years, in the Pietermaritzburg High Court last week. Last October the Greytown Gazette reported that Sibusiso Siyabonga Ndawonde had been arrested on charges of multiple rape. The so-called nyanga from Msinga had, during July and August 2015, repeatedly raped four young males between the ages of 17 and 19 at his home. It was reported he had approached the families of these boys saying he had received a “prophecy” that they would be bewitched and become ill, but he could cure them if they went to live with him so he could treat them using traditional medicines. Ndawonde used the same approach to lure all four teens into his “trap’’. Three of the boys were from Msinga and one was from Kranskop and were taken in at different times during the two months. At the nyanga’s home he would talk the victims into entering his traditional practice room to be healed. Kept shut in this room each of the four were then raped continually with the nyanga telling them this was the only way in which they could heal and be cured of the bad omens he said they possessed. One of the boys managed to audio record the nyanga asking the victim to have sexual intercourse with him. Another victim, a 16year-old managed to escape back home and his mother opened a case at the Msinga police station. Greytown FCIS were alerted and went to the homestead where they found another two teens in the traditional healing room,

both of whom were physically and emotionally traumatised and intimidated, but who also identified Ndawonde as the rapist. Ndawonde was arrested at his homestead and bail was denied. A number of cases of rape were opened against him by the victims. The case was transferred from Greytown Regional Court to the Pietermaritzburg High Court for trial where last week the judge imposed five life sentences and 10

years’ on the “monster” rapist. Captain K. Budloo, the FCIS Unit Commander welcomed the sentence handed down to the accused, and thanked Constable Mavis Mbatha, Constable Sakhi Dumakude and Advocate Singh for the teamwork and commitment which had ensured that this “monster” rapist has been handed down a penalty he well deserved for the horrendous crimes he had committed.

ces were brought to the attention of municipal management, which responded to the organising committee. Following on management’s response, a spokesman for the organising committee said that committee members had distanced themselves from the burning and destruction carried out by the protestors. In addition, the organising committee members had committed themselves to working with management to resolve problems affecting the community peacefully without violence and destruction of property. Umshwathi Mayor, Siphindile Zondi-Mbhele condemned the violence stating: “No matter what kind of dissatisfaction the community members have we cannot tolerate the burning of government property – this is highly disturbing to progress and service delivery” . Five people were arrested by New Hanover SAPS and appeared in the New Hanover Magistrate’s Court on 8 and 12 September. They were refused bail as the police continue to investigate. The case has been remanded to 15 September when a bail application will be heard. The suspects have been transferred from New Hanover Police Station to New Prison in Pietermaritzburg.

Proving you are never too young to learn, these little maidens were learning the steps and listening to what the older maidens told them. A TOTAL of 530 maidens from Umvoti were among the thousands at this year's Umkhosi woMhlanga held at the Enyokeni Royal palace at Nongoma last weekend. The Royal Reed Dance festival is a dignified traditional ceremony and at the same time a vibrant festive occasion depicting the cultural heritage of the Zulu nation. It is estimated about 33 000 were present this year to appear before King Goodwill Zwelethini and it is considered an honour to take part with virginity being the most important requirement. In an address at a reed dance the previous weekend King Zwelethini, referring to the wanton and wasteful destruction of education-

al properties by students, said that his main concern were the parents who were not disciplining their children querying "why do parents leave everything to police and government when their children go wild?" He called on government to form a forum with the universities and students to discuss issues. The king also lashed out at the critics of virginity testing and the annual reed dance stating "they are hypocrites". King Zwelethini emphasised that the Reed Dance festival is an opportunity to educate and inform the youth about vital social issues including practicing sexual morals and behaviours that prevent teenage pregnancy and lower the risks of HIV/Aids.

FRIENDS of different languages were welcomed at the Deutscher Tag or German Day on Saturday, to celebrate the German language. This international Day of the German Language was started in 2001 by the Association of German Language to “create a language awareness and to use foreign words, especially English, to a minimum”. This year’s celebration at Hermannsburg included not only our school family, but also Deutsche Schule Durban, Domino Servite School and Wartburg-Kirchdorf School, whose pupils entertained visitors with song, dance and poetry. The Goethe Institute invited visitors to participate in the Autobahnspiel - an informative, interactive station-based game that provides impressions and facts about German-speaking countries, their cultures and their products. German cakes and baked goods were brought by the KwaSizabantu bakery, and visitors could enjoy one of their famous brezel with their tea and coffee. Thank you to all who helped to make this day a success, particularly Mrs Birgit Eggers and our school’s German Department for the organisation and the Grade 9 class, and Mrs “Koekoe” Olivier and Mrs Juanita Ortmann for the lunch. Cordwall Chronicles

Wartburg Kirchdorf School news SUNSHINE, learning and fun – all in one - this is what describes theh Wartburg Kirchdorf Grade R farm outing well. The children saw a wide range of farm animals as well as touching a number of them too. They had an educational

morning learning about the animals and having fun going on a train ride, foofie slide, slip and slide and more. A big thank you to Mr and Mrs Jonathan Dent and Mr and Mrs Dass for accommodating us on their farms. Mrs Sonja Jung and the pre primary class have lots of fun on the farm.

New Hanover Prep School news Cordwall Grade 3 pupils enjoyed ‘Show and Tell’. ABOVE: Snele Zondi makes a fruit salad.

IT is important for our children to be reminded of the importance of trees and to be environmentally aware. As an International EcoSchool, New Hanover Prep believes in encouraging our children to be mindful of their environment. During International Arbor Week, the children at New Hano-

ver Prep collected indigenous tree seeds from around the school grounds and planted them in seed trays. The children learnt about the trees they were planting, as well as how to grow trees from seed. There was much excitement when after just a few days, there were already a number of seedlings emerging.

Hermannsburg Little Oaks’ Oracle

Ready to present ‘Annette and her Teddy Bear’ (from left) Uta Malzahn, Ilse Ortmann, Micayla Reineke, Annette Gathmann and Thembani Mzila.

ON Friday, the Little Oaks welcomed their grandparents to the Kindergarten, where they looked at their grandchildren’s portfolios while enjoying tea, coffee and treats, served by the Kindergarten teachers, volunteer workers and parents. Thereafter oupa and ouma participated in a hands-on activity with their grandchildren - they had to colour, cut and construct puppets, which promoted learning and animated conversations. The great highlight of the day was the drama, Annette and her Teddy Bear, a play presented by the teachers and volunteer workers. At the end of the morning, each Kindergarten grandparent took home a special oven-glove created by their grandchild to remember the wonderful day together.

St Cathryn’s news THIS past weekend the Farmers’ Agri-Care Monthly Mug was played and in the field were some engineers … and while most engineers would concentrate on their golf game, these however, spoke about Kw hours, Psi, RPM per electric motors and flow rates … and these discussions had a serious effect on the overall results on the day. Also in the field was farmer Brown and after a count-out farmer Brown walked off with the Mug. The Westbrook mayor, technician Zane and the Cake Baker were some of the other players and with a late cancellation of a golfer, the field set off in misty cold conditions. 1st: Dieter Meyer nett 69 oco 2nd: Lawrence Savage 3rd: Marius Muller nett 70 4th: Luyanda Daniels nett 71 5th: Badger Aherin nett 73 Captain’s putter: Zane Padoa Nearest to pin 2/11th: Zane Padoa

International Childhood Cancer Awareness Month SEPTEMBER is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, when globally, countries honour and remember children and families affected by this disease, and rally awareness on the early warning signs of childhood cancer. Choc Childhood Cancer Foundation SA encourages South Africans to “Go for Gold” by purchasing the gold ribbon from the online Choc store or nearest Choc offices. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine the types of cancers that develop in children are often different from those in adults. Childhood cancers are often the result of DNA changes in cells and unlike many cancers in adults, childhood cancers are not strongly linked to lifestyle or environmental risk factors, therefore no preventative measure can be taken. Early detection creates a better chance of survival. Recent estimates by the International Agency for Research on cancer show that the global occurrence of childhood cancer is higher than previously assessed. Worldwide, approximately 215 000 cancers are diagnosed a year in those younger than 15 and about 85 000 cancers in those aged

15 to 19. This means globally, 300 000 parents across all ages, ethnic groups and socioeconomic conditions will be hearing the words “your child has cancer”. Many childhood cancers have much higher survival rates when diagnosed early. Unfortunately, signs are sometimes overlooked or misdiagnosed because early symptoms are mistakenly attributed to more common injuries or illnesses such as constant headaches, mumps, new squint and more as stipulated in the early warning signs of childhood

cancer. Leaflets detailing these early warning signs are also available from Choc as part of the organisation’s awareness programme, which includes training health care workers, traditional healers, and communities in detecting these vital early warning signs. Support Childhood Cancer Month – “go gold”, because the future of our precious children is not to be compromised. For more information about Choc, contact Durban office on 084 488 8026 or email dbn@choc. org.za

they are of the students for their dedication, discipline and hard work. The association thanks the following sponsors for their assistance in making it possible for an event such as this to be held in Greytown and the local support to the local club - Linkseed, Mascor, Mr Chiazzari, Hoosen Butchery, Kharodias Wholesaler and Field Security.

We also thank the Greytown Welfare for the sponsorship of the community hall as well as Senei Mzwandile Goba and Senei Mzikayise Sithole for coming from Pietermaritzburg to test the students. Umvoti Kyokushin-Kai Karate association will be hosting the school championships at the new Enhlalakahle hall on 24 September. Such was the wild ride that led to the founding of Nike, arguably the most recognisable and respected sporting brand in the world today. Fortunately, this long-awaited memoir is everything we hoped it would be – a more human and less corporate tale about a group of passionate runners who stopped at nothing to revolutionise the shoes people ran in, the surface they ran on, and the perception they had of themselves while running, a pastime once seen as solely for Olympians in training. Informative, engaging and often humorous, Shoe Dog is a worthy addition to every story about a group of ordinaries who came together to build something larger than themselves. Omar Sayed.
