Two murder suspects arrested TWO men were arrested and four unlicensed firearms recovered by Kranskop SAPS acting on information received from Durban about a murder in which firearms had been used. According to the source in Durban the suspects were from the Kranskop area and it is believed they fled back to their home. SAPS members and the Kranskop station commander went to Oshikishini, where the suspect was found at his residence. On searching the suspect’s vehicle and premises an unlicensed 9 mm Parabellum, with the number filed off, was found in the suspect’s possession together with nine rounds of live ammunition. A licensed .303, found in his vehicle, was also removed for further investigation. Also in the suspect’s car a further 30 rounds of illegal .38 special rounds were recovered. After an intense search of neighbouring houses, a second suspect was taken into custody and a homemade shotgun and 12-bore shotgun was recovered. Kranskop police chief Lieutenant-Colonel Minnaar told the Greytown Gazette she was extremely proud of the professional way in which her members had responded to the information received and the dedication and determination they had showed to preserve and recover the unlicensed firearms and illegal ammunition Hopefully, due to the quick response and seizures of the firearms and ammunition and the two arrests by the Kranskop SAPS, the killing of community members in Oshikishini will come to an end and peace will, once again, be restored.

Umvoti mayor to be elected next Tuesday AS reported in last week’s Greytown Gazette, the ANC retained Umvoti Municipality obtaining 53.66% of the ward, PR and district municipality votes with the IFP on 40,53%. In real numbers ANC received 59 622 and the IFP 45 030 votes. The DA had a total of 4 034, the EFF 1 543, African Mantungwa community 438 and the three Independents got 446 votes. With 65% of the registered voters casting their votes the ANC has 10 councillors in the 14 wards and the IFP four ward councillors. However, taking the PR formula into account the IFP has seven PR councillors, the ANC five and the DA once again has one PR councillor. The number of councillors have been increased from the 2011 elections from 21 to 27 with three extra wards making up the 14. In terms of the Local Government Municipal Structures Act the first council meeting of a newly elected council has to take place within 14 days of election results. The Umvoti Council meeting will therefore be held next Tues-

day 23 August at 10am in the town hall, at which the Umvoti Mayor, Speaker and Executive Committee will be elected. Voters also made their mark for the Umzinyathi District Municipality and these councillors will also be elected at next Tuesday’s meeting. The ANC received 19 712 votes and the IFP 15 093. Msinga and Nquthu form part of the district municipality and both areas were won by the IFP. Endumeni is “hung” and have elected their mayors and representatives. The public is invited to attend this meeting, and as can be seen from the official notice of the meeting on page 3, parking around the town hall in Pine and Bell streets will be closed to the public prior and for the duration of the meeting. In addition the public is warned that no weapons, no political regalia or weapons of any kind are permitted. The outcome of the elected officials is being awaited with considerable interest. The district council meets after the four member councils. At the time of going to press

the parties had not officially notified IEC of their PR councillors. The lists, as published in the Greytown Gazette on 6 July, can

be amended by the political parties. Names of the PR councillors will be published in next week’s issue.

EVERY parent knows how their toddler loves to pick up things and put it straight into their mouth. However, ruthless criminals, who laced pieces of sausage and threw them over the fence into an Acacia Street garden, could face murder charges instead of lesser charges for housebreaking. The Greytown Gazette reported recently that two dogs had being poisoned in the area, followed by a burglary, which appears to be the modus operandi of these criminals. Fortunately, these doctored sausages were spotted and picked up by a resident. This is an appeal to everyone - be alert about this criminal tactic. If any doctored meat is found please remove it

Return dignity to girls and women THROUGHOUT South Africa, over the past few years, a number of groups have been formed to assist the estimated two million or so girls, between the age 12 and 18, who miss many days of school each year because they cannot afford sanitary towels Research studies have shown that girls who cannot afford pads or tampons miss approximately five days of school a month. Living below the poverty line they have to resort to using old cloths, rags, newspapers, leaves, bark and grass, which can do irreparable harm not only physically, but psychologically and emotionally. “Dignity Dreams”, one of several NGOs, outlines the problem in its goals.

Every girl in South Africa deserves access to safe and hygienic sanitary products. Our goal is to help girls and/or women reclaim the dignity that poverty denies them and will enable girls to make a lasting positive impact on the communities they live in, and society as a whole. They will complete high school, will be less likely to get HIV/ Aids or fall pregnant before the age of 18 and will likely earn higher wages, etc. As a major solution to this problem, enterprising entrepreneurs have developed reusable sanitary pads that which can be washed and reused for up to five years. These pads are environmentally friendly and are being made in a number of centres throughout the country.

‘Greytown Gazette’ would like to promote, through an existing organisation in Umvoti, the establishment of a basic supply of reusable sanitary pads for use in the many rural schools in the district Compared to a being used on a long-term basis to non-re-usuable pads the re-usable ones are more economical. The Greytown Gazette would like to promote, through an existing organisation in Umvoti, the establishment of a basic supply of reusable sanitary pads for use in the many rural schools in the district.

Anyone interested is requested to contact the Greytown Gazette. For the time being a community aware group of youth are undertaking a related project as follows: Young Lives Do Matter is a nonprofit organisation in Greytown, with the purpose of improving the lives of children and the youth by contributing to their basic needs.

Something phishy? Don’t take the bait DESPITE non-stop warnings in the media and reports of people being conned, there are some who still fall for one of the many spams that appear on computers and cellphones. Instead of simply deleting, the spams are opened, so the best thing to do and remember is to just press “delete”. Hendus Venter, African Bank chief information officer, explains that phishing is when criminals, pretending to be a trustworthy entity, use a form of electronic communication, either SMS or email, to

try to extract sensitive information from you. This information can include user names, passwords, credit card details and sometimes, indirectly, money. Being able to identify a phishing scam is helpful so here are four things you can look out: • Generic greeting. Phishing emails are usually sent in large batches. To save time, internet criminals use generic names like First Generic Bank Customer so they don't have to type recipients' names out and send emails one by

one. If you don't see your name, be suspicious. • Forged link. Even if a link has a name you recognise somewhere in it, this doesn't mean it links to the real organisation. Roll your mouse over the link and see if it matches what appears in the email. If there is a discrepancy, don't click on the link. Remember websites where it is safe to enter personal information begin with https - the “s” stands for secure. If you don't see https do not proceed. You should also always question

the sender, but be careful because hackers can spoof a sender's email address to make the mail look like it comes from someone you know. Some common phishing emails include “you have voice mail, payment and/or invoice notifications, shipment notifications, and flight or hotel booking confirmations. • Requests personal information. The point of sending phishing emails is to trick you into providing personal information. If you receive an email requesting your personal information, it is probably a

phishing attempt. It will ask you to click on a link, open an attachment or provide details of some kind. • Sense of urgency. Internet criminals want you to provide your personal information “now”. They do this by making you think something has happened that requires you to act fast. The faster they get your information, the faster they can move on to another victim. If the message triggers an emotional reaction such as curiosity or fear, or tries to pressurise you there's a good chance it's a fake.

Wembley pre school Olympians display their country flags during the mini Olympics flag procession.

ON Friday 5 August the preschool got ready for a day of excitement, as we had our own mini Olympics. The athletes started this off with a flag procession, showing the beautiful flags they had made with their parents. From there we went to different stations where we started with sprints, followed by long jump, shot put and long distance running. The focus was on participation, sportsmanship and enjoyment. The pre-schoolers surprised us with their talent and they each received a medal and ice lolly before leaving for their well-deserved mid-term break. On 3 August all eligible South African voters, meaning if you are 18 years or older, made their mark in local government elections. What a privilege to be a part of something so important. But what if you were not yet 18? What if you were only in Grade 1? Would you have to wait about 12 years before you could be part of the hype? Not at Wembley College - we in Grade 1 spent the

morning learning about the process of voting, the rules and the importance of elections. We created our special ID documents and registered to vote. Our teachers created an environment similar to that of the voting stations in town. We received our voting ballots and could vote for our favourite Greytown restaurant. We each cast our vote in secret and the votes were tallied what fun. On 29 July a number of our high-school girls attended the first round of U14-U19 soccer trials at Carter High School in Pietermaritzburg. Congratulations to Phumelele Mtshali, who was selected as goalkeeper for the final round of trials on 6 August. Sarah Barber attended the KZN Inland Girls’ U19 cricket trials held on 6 August. We are proud to announce that she has been invited to attend the KZN senior women’s and girls’ U19 training camp, taking place from 13-14 August at the Pietermaritzburg Oval.

Wembley Senior Primary collect for charity "EVERY Drop Counts", the Wembley Senior Primary play was not only about saving water. Entry to the play was a bag of old clothes or toys. Linda Hyter from Letcee arrived on Thursday 11 August to collect the donations and Wembley pupils gave her a warm welcome and assisted her by carrying many plastic bags filled with clothes and toys to

her car. These generous donations will be divided between various communities in the Umvoti district - Matimatolo, Mbuba, Eshane and the barracks in Greytown. Letcee would like to thank everyone who made a contribution. To donate more items, drop them off at the Letcee office at 130 Voortrekker Street.

They learnt that women should be treated with respect, and that we should say “thank you” to our moms and grannies for keeping our homes clean and cozy, and for looking after them, their children. What is El Niño and La Niña EL Niño has been blamed for the current drought in South Africa, but what exactly is El Niño. According to the SA Weather Bureau El Niño is the warming of sea-surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean which influences atmospheric circulation, and consequently rainfall and temperature in specific areas around the world. El Niño is translated from Spanish as the “boy child”. Peruvian anchovy fishermen traditionally used the term - a reference to the Christ child - to describe the appearance of a warm ocean current off the South American coast around Christmas. Over the years the term El Niño has come to be reserved for the sequence of changes in the circulation across the Pacific Ocean and Indonesian archipelago when warming is particularly strong. Approximately 14 El Niño events affected the world between 1950 and 2003. Among them was the 1997/1998 event, by many measures the strongest thus far this century, although South Africa escaped the impact of it to some extent. La Niña, Spanish for “the girl”, is the

opposite of El Niño. “La Niña is the cooling of sea-surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean which influences atmospheric circulation, and consequently rainfall and temperature in specific areas around the world. SSTs in the equatorial Pacific become cooler than normal, giving rise to the term cold event.” What about Enso? There is a third term to take into account: “The changes in the Pacific Ocean are represented by the term El Niño an/or La Niña, while changes in the atmosphere are known as the Southern Oscillation. Because these two cannot be separated, the term Eenso is often used. Enso refers to both El Niño and La Niña.’ Here’s hoping La Niña is about to make her appearance not only in Umvoti, but throughout the country.

August birth flowers

In memory of

SOOKRAM RAMLUCKEN

15 Years have passed I only wanted you They say memories are golden, well maybe that is true. I never wanted memories, I only wanted you. A million times I needed you, a million times I cried. If love alone could have saved you, you never would have died. In life I loved you dearly, in death I love you still. In my heart you hold a place no one could ever fill. If tears could build a stairway and heartache make a lane, I’d walk the path to heaven and bring you back again. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same, but as God calls us one by one the chain will link again. Sadly missed by your wife, children and grandchildren.

AUGUST birth flowers are gladiolus and the poppy. The gladiolus, or “sword lily”, represents remembrance, calm, integrity, and infatuation. In floral history, gladiolus flowers have several different meanings. Because of their association with gladiators, they traditionally symbolise strength, sincerity and moral integrity. •Some parts of the gladiolus plant are poisonous if eaten by humans or animals. •Some species may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions when touched. • Gladiolus is also the official flower for 40year wedding anniversaries. The other August flower is the poppy. A red poppy signifies pleasure; A white poppy is given for consolation; and, A yellow poppy wishes wealth and success. The Remembrance poppy (red) is the common field poppy. It became identified with the battle zones of World War I, particularly the battle of Ypres in 1915 and Flanders Fields - John McCrae’s famous poem which immortalised this image: In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. The use of opium poppies goes back to Sumer – an ancient civilisation, which recorded their use in the form of images. Opium poppies are grown commercially in Britain for use in medical opiates such as morphine.

AUGUST interestingly has three birthstones – none of them very fashionable now – they are the peridot, sardonyx and spinel. Peridot is said to host magical powers and healing properties to protect against nightmares and to bring the wearer power, influence, and a successful year. It is associated with prosperity, peace and has the power to ward off evil. In Hawaii, peridot symbolises the tears of Pele, the goddess of fire and volcanoes. This gemstone comes in several colour variations ranging from yellowish green to brown, but most consumers are attracted to the bright lime greens and olive greens. Second birthstone is sardonyx, a form of onyx - recog-

nised by its layers of reddishbrown and white banding. It was popular with the ancient Greeks and Romans who carried into battle talismans of sardonyx engraved with images of heroes such as Mars or Hercules, believing that this would bring courage and victory. This gemstone is found throughout the world, Czechoslovakia, Brazil, Uruguay, Germany and the U.S. Spinel is often mistaken for gemstones as it tends to resemble either a ruby or sapphire. Vivid red is the most popular colour of spinel gemstones, followed by cobalt blue, bright pink and bright orange.
