Dalton woman gets 10 years for child rape A 30-YEAR-OLD woman, found guilty of raping a teenage boy in Dalton, was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court last week. The magistrate also ruled that her name be entered into the register for sex offenders and that she not be allowed to work with children. In May 2013 the woman, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the boy, who is her neighbour, left her cellphone at the boy’s house to charge as she did not have electricity at her house. When the teen returned the cell to her she said he had to have sexual intercourse with her. When he refused she threatened to beat him if he did not comply. She removed her clothing and demanded he do the same, and
then raped him, after which she told him to get dressed and leave by the back door. At his home the youngster told his grandmother what had happened and the police were notified. In her defence it was stated she was a single mother and had been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the rape and this had impaired her judgment. However, the state prosecutor submitted that as a mother she should have known better and had shown no remorse for her actions. The 10-year sentence was welcomed by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Molpone Noko, who stated: “This serves as a warning to like-minded individuals that rape is a serious offence committed by both men and women, and the punishment is equally serious.”
of honour and a general salute. The scroll identifying the Freedom of Entry into Greytown will be presented to the officers commanding Air Force Base Durban and 15
Squadron. The acceptance and granting of the freedom will be followed by a march past by the Guard of Honour Air Force Base, 15 Squadron and the UMR, which will include mounted and mechanised columns, and a fly past. In acknowledgment of UMR’s historical links with the district (established here in 1893), it was first granted the Freedom of Entry into Greytown as a main feature of Greytown’s 100th birthday celebrations in 1954. The scroll stated: “We
confer upon you the right, privilege, honour and distinction of marching through the streets of Greytown on all ceremonial and other occasions with bayonets fixed, drums beating and colours flying.” A reminder to all that Umvoti Municipality is closing streets as follows from 6am on Saturday to 6am Sunday: Bell Street from town offices to post office, Pine to Okes streets, Okes to Cathcart and Cathcart Street through to Bell Street.

Gardens a hidden treasure trove WHEN looking at a garden most people are impressed by bright flowers and stately trees, but never look beyond to observe and appreciate the wonders that lie in hidden recesses or aloft. In an inspiring presentation to a well-attended meeting of Umvoti Garden Club members and guests last Tuesday, local butterfly and moth expert, Kevin Cockburn, encouraged gardeners to “view gardens with new eyes” to become aware of the abundance of fascinating and beautiful creatures that share our gardens. The subject of butterflies and moths is intriguing with the enchanting metamorphosis from vo-
raciously feeding, spiny larva to beautiful, airborne, winged adult appearing almost magical. Kevin’s passion for his subject, combined with his artistic bent and patient hours spent photographing butterflies and moths through their entire life cycle, provided a visual feast to support his vast knowledge of these interesting creatures. The extensive subject of lepidoptera is such that some people spend a lifetime studying these creatures, their habits and their specific needs for survival. However, in the limited time available for his presentation, Kevin managed to open a window into this fascinating world, offering a
tantalising view of a far greater subject. He encouraged all who attended the meeting to become more aware of the various butterflies and moths, to encourage their presence by providing suitable food plants and avoid the use of toxic insecticides. With the approach of winter the garden chores of planting, mowing and weeding slow down giving gardeners time to reflect and plan for the new season. Why not spend time planning the inclusion of specific butterfly larval host plants or adult food plants into your spring planting programme. - J. Cowie.

Mondi WESSA interschool regional enviro quiz

Trees in Pied Piper garb FEATURING a spectrum of autumnal colours this avenue of liquid amber trees in High Street provides an eye-catching sight at this time of the year. The photograph was taken by Bryan Paul on a sunny morning last week. The avenue was planted by Mike and Trish Barrow in 1989. The poem, written by Greytown’s poet laureate, the late Sean O’Kelly, has an interesting background. It appeared in the annual financial report of a company named
Bruynzeel Plywoods (a large timber growing and processing company) in the seventies and was said to be the first time a poem had been specifically written for such use for a company quoted on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. “Trees in Pied Piper garb Of reds and golds Lead children's hearts a-dancing Through the short'ning days. And, in sad Autumn's hazy mornings,

THIS year the regional contest was hosted by Hermannsburg School with seven teams from four schools taking part. The contestants were fairly evenly matched, with the top three scores very close, right up to the last round of the quiz. The Hermannsburg B team finally outplayed the Hermannsburg A team and the final result was Hermannsburg B team in top place, closely followed by Domino Servite and Hermannsburg's A team in third place. Contestants impressed with their vast pool of knowledge. Quiz master, Kevin Cockburn, deserves special mention for always presenting the contestants with challenging questions and explanations. Cliff Walton is the regional WESSA representative and main organiser of the quiz and Nick Klapprott, Greytown's Honorary Officer's chairman, acted as the official time keeper. Mondi representatives were Moon Chetty and Barnabas Vroegop and once again Mondi sponsored beautiful book prizes and refreshments. In addition the winning team received the floating Wizzard Worms trophy . The winners are looking forward to taking part in the national finals to be held in Pietermaritzburg after the July school holidays.

Spar hockey festival CONTINUING their dominance in the Spar KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge, Wartburg Kirchdorf, for the fourth time, cleaned up at this year’s Umvoti, uThukela and Umzinyathi Regional at Deutsche Schule Hermannsburg on Saturday, May 14. Led by star player Captain Elke Engelbrecht, the in-form team scored an impressive 18 goals from six games. They met Ladysmith Hih School in the finals after a round robin tournament. The score was 0-0 at half time with both teams maintaining a 50% possession. After a quick change over, Wartburg’s Erin Jarvie was camped out on the left upright and with a quick reac-
tion knocked the ball in to score the team’s first goal. Wartburg cemented their win when Vanessa Mkhize bagged the team’s second goal resulting in their 2-0 victory. “It was great to have been at Hermannsburg again for this regional, especially as they celebrate their 160 anniversary, as the oldest private school in KZN,” said Les Galloway, tournament director.. The Most Promising Umpire was Walter Moore representing Ladysmith High School. Results: 1 Wartburg Kirchdorf, 2 Ladysmith, 3 Greytown, 4 Wembley College, 5 Deutsche Schule Hermannsburg, 6 Estcourt.

THEY came in droves, and they weren’t disappointed - old pupils, friends and members of the school family descended on Hermannsburg to celebrate 160 years of excellence in education. On Friday over 200 guests were delighted by the school choirs, intrigued by the guided tour of the campus and spent time catching up with old friends around the fondly-remembered bonfires at the Esssaal while braaiing on the many grids provided and enjoying traditional Hermannsburg Klitsch. Two high school reunions were held over the weekend, organised by the classes of 1966 and 2006 to coincide with Schulfest. On Saturday the festivities continued, with the Spar KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge taking centre field and the 7s rugby, U16

Hermannsburg Little Oaks’ Oracle SCHULFEST 2016 was the best. What fun the Little Oaks had. Lots of games were ready for them to celebrate 160 years of HMB School. Tractor rides, jumping on the jumping castles and a lantern procession at the end of the day made this year's Schulfest unforgettable for them. But they also know that they have to give a big thank you to their parents, teachers and to all our HMB friends for organising, donating, working and supporting us on that day. Without your hard work we could not have had such a wonderful and fabulous day.

Window on Wembley WE are proud to announce that Ashleigh Mason, who represented the U16 Umzinyathi hockey team as captain at the interprovincial tournament, has been selected for the U16 KZN Country and Districts team. We wish her all the best as she attends various practices, training camps and a tour to Potchefstroom from 11 to 15 June Well done to the following pupils for making the U12 and U13 Umzinyathi hockey team: U12 girls: Thando Khumalo, Kayla McCabeandEmma Martens. U12 boys: Tim Gorzellok. U13 girls: Mayenzi Maphanga, Kristen Steyn, Leah Tedder, Sarah Barber, Amoré van Rooyen, Keren Chiazzari and Bridget Dede (nontravelling reserve). U13 boys: Nkosi Dlamini, JJ Van Zuydam and Jack Yeadon. They will represent Umzinyathi at the interdistrict tournament on 14 and 15 May. On Thursday 5 May, Grade 3
pupils travelled to the African Birds of Prey Sanctuary at Ashburton. We started off with a tour of the more than 40 birds’ cages, a firm favourite is always Hoot Hollow, which houses more than nine species of owl. Shannon, our guide, explained how fortunate we are in South Africa because we have an abundance of birds of prey (more than in both the Americas). There are in fact 83 different kinds of raptors in southern Africa. Once we finished our tour and our snack, we were privileged to watch five different birds give us an aerial show that illustrated the feeding habits of eagles, kites, sparrow hawks and two different kinds of owls. This sanctuary is short of funds and we would encourage anyone who is looking for a pleasant family excursion, just outside Pietermaritzburg, to consider visiting it. Our thanks to Mrs Delia Dreyer, who accompanied us and helped
with the transport of the children. Grade 1 Mini Rugby at St Charles’s Rugby Festival vs Merchiston 1 drew, vs Scottsville won, vs St Charles won.
